How can i stop my dog from eating cat food?

Carmel

I just moved in so there is no good high surface for me to put the cat food up on where the dog cant reach. Any suggestions? Does anyone know if cat food is harmful to dogs? fyi my dog is a chihuahua (4 lbs)

Aldo

I have a baby gate seperating my dog from the "Cat room" where their bowls and cat litter is placed. The dog can not jump over the gate but the cats can Eating cat food probably wont hurt your dog, though its best that he doesnt eat it all the time. Cats and dogs require different diets. Cats are pure carnivores, meaning they typically eat nothing but meat, while dogs are omnivorous, meaning that they eat some plant materials along with their meat. Cat diets are made primarily of meat and meat products, so in the long run they can be too rich for dogs and can cause digestive problems. They are also denser in calories than dog diets, so they can lead to obesity in dogs. Because of the additional fat and calories, cat food often tastes better to dogs than dog food does, so you may have to keep an eye on your dog to make sure he doesnt indulge in the kitty kibbles. By the way, while cat food is generally okay for dogs, dog diets lack essential nutrients that cats need to stay healthy, so cats cant live on dog food. Overall, its safest to feed your pets the kind of food formulated to be healthiest for their specific species.

Dont leave food down all the time. Feed them in separate rooms.

Cat food will cause your dog to become obese, and subsequently can cause pancreatitis and diabetes.

Georgia

Thats just nonsense - your cat can jump up high to get her food and your chi sure cant. Just put the food up somewhere.

Its not harmful to him, but it is not nutritionally balanced for him. It is also more expensive than dog food and will only end up making you pay more to get a fat dog. I put my cats food up on a cat tower so the dogs cannot reach it. While they do catch a stray piece that the cats drop down from time to time, it has worked well, even with puppies.

Put the cat food in a room that the dog cant get into

Kacy

Many with dogs and cats both feed cats on a certian counter or dresser. You can also place the cat food in the bathtub, your chi shouldnt be able to get over the edge.

Florene

No-cat food is NOT harmful to dogs. just put the cat food in a barrel, thats what i did. (in its bag!)

Put the cat food up on a box or anything high enough to keep the dog out of it. Or for now feed the cat 2-3 x daily and dont LET your dog go near it and then pick it up after 20 minutes. Get between the cat food and the dog and walk into the dog and make the dog back up. Make sure the dog knows YOU dont allow it to eat the cat food. Cat food is VERY bad for dogs. The smaller the dog the quicker it can cause harm. Feed small dogs 2-3x daily also. Im sure you can find a counter or a dresser...you can get a rubber place mat to put under the cats bowl. I got one at a pet store that has a small edge to keep the food on the mat.

Lenard

You mean, seriously, you cant figure this out on your own?

Ardis

You shouldn`t be allowing your animals to self feed ANYHOW! So this should be real easy! When you feed your cat, lock your dog in another room until the cat is finished.

Delmy

Dogs will eat anything so just give him something else or walk it for like 30mins get it tired cool it down and it will feel hungry feed it dog food

We keep our cat food on top of the toilet. We have 3 dogs and they cant get to it.
