How do i know when my kittens are ready to eat real cat food?

Cathryn

They/re only about 4 weeks old. I do not know if the mother cat is feeding them or not because Im never around when shes feeding them. So how do I know it is time for the baby kittens to start feeding on real cat food? One already started sips a little water every now and then.

I think theyre about ready for wet food or dry food with some water added. Start setting it out for them and see if they eat it.

I would suggest letting the mama be the step on that, but make sure you give her the proper supplies. First, start with soft food eventually as the kittens become older you can start mixing in harder more adult foods. This is also a good way to change to a different brand. ( do this gradually and eventually they will be more used to it than their old cat food.)

Ive raised two litters of kittens in my life, so I know what Im talking about. Usually, baby kittens dont start to eat solid food until theyre around 2 months, so you should wait a while. But, when they turn about a month, they will regularly drink water. Your kitten that sips the water like you said is probably just experimenting, because water is easier to sip than hard cat food is to eat.

When my kittens where ready the mother cat started carrying pieces of cat food to her nest, they where around 5 weeks at the time so mum will try to let you know, but you will be able to tell if they seem hungry they will show this by moving about and seem restless after a feed due to being still hungry.

They may be just leave some food out

Let mama handle it. just dont take them away from the mother too early, she will ween them

Clay

Leave food and water in saucers next to moms food, she will teach them
