Is it safe to feed my chickens canned fish cat food?
Ive heard that fish is a good source of protein for chickens to eat, and as I dont want to feed them other animals (meat and bone meal), I thought that cheap canned fish, like cat food, could be a good option from time to time. Does anyone know if this could be bad for them?
How do i keep ants from invading my kitchen trash or cat food bowl at night?

The saturated fat content is very high in the foods you mentioned, it wouldnt harm a dog for a week, perhaps give it the runs but other than that, it wouldnt harm a dog unless you gave it these foods for its entire (short) life. Just look at the mess evolution to eat for survival + sedentary lifestyles has done for so called civilized nations!

Not true if you ate pizza fried chicken etc for a week your blood pressure will be through the roof and so will the dogs and it will most surely alter the dogs behavior

Human food is really not that bad for dogs, if you ever read whats in dog food you will see that it contains the same things we humans eat, just stay away from spicey foods. my dogs wont eat tuna so cat food would not work for them, plus dogs eat more than cats.

Some human food...like mean juice, and meat is okay for dogs, but some dogs have stomache problems and cannot diguest the food...then they get sick...and vet bills..oh they are expensive.. I really think it depends on the breed of dog, some smaller doggies stomachs are a bit more delicate than the larger dogs, also I do believe it also depends on what one started feeding the dog at its early age, but most dogs can satisfactorily eat any type food and digest it, anything that can eat it`s own vomit should`nt have to ask for a menu at meal time lol.

I had a stray cat have babies in my car port. Shes been taking care of them very well. We feed her and another cat as well (thats all).. I was wondering when do we feed her kittens dry cat food? How do we keep them from going out of the property when they start walking around more? Were going to trap them and get them fixed when they are old enough.

The best thing to do is to feed Mom a high quality canned diet and that will entice the little ones and they will start eating with her. Dont mix water into dry food. The water takes up to much space and the kittens dont get enough nutrition when you do that. Feed a high quality canned only diet to the mom, who will then teach the kittens to eat. :o)Cats were never meant to eat dry food, also known as cereals or kibble. We, humans, make them eat it for convenience to us. It has nothing to do with them or their nutritional needs. Its completely species inappropriate. All small domestic cats descended from desert cats. In the wild, desert cats derive their entire liquid intake from their prey. They do not have a thirst mechanism because they dont need it when eating a species appropriate diet. They get all they need from what they eat. Additionally water was usually not available to them in their desert climate. So they do not often drink water. Regular ol house cats have descended from those same wild desert cats. So in a home environment, your kitty does not get the moisture it needs from dry food and it’s almost always in a constant state of dehydration. Cats are not taking in enough water to stave them off. Proper water intake through a species appropriate diet alone can prevent most of these conditions. Overall, wet is all around better for any cats diet, be it canned or Raw and they should never be fed dry cereal kibble if we wish to most closely match their wild nutritional and dietary needs. Kibble meets our needs… not our cats. I recommend varying the diet with a constant rotation of 2 to 4 different brands of canned foods that your cat enjoys. If you do this, and allow your cat the same assortment they would have in nature when eating mice, bugs, birds and rabbits, your cat’s digestive system wont be so sensitive and you wont have to run around looking for a specific brand when your store is out. A recently pregnant/nursing mom needs more nutritition, too, so I would put dry kitten food out for the whole family -- it also has smaller pieces. (Occasionally a kitten will choke on dry food for adult cats, though Ive only heard of that happening to spoiled indoor kittens.) Youll be able to tell theyre getting enough to eat if they have energy and arent too skinny. Unless mom gets scared and moves the whole family, they wont leave on their own until theyre several months old. Some agencies will trap and spay/neuter as young as eight weeks. Its safe for the kittens. If you can start to play with the kittens without freaking mom cat out, they can socialize to people and they might even be adoptable as pets, but the most reliable way to tame them for adoption is to take them away from mom once theyre eating solid food at 4 or 5 weeks. By the time they reach between 8 and 12 weeks, if they arent being raised as pets, they might never become tame (although there are exceptions; we have one as a sweet indoor pet). But even if all you can do is feed and fix them, youre doing a great thing for their health and happiness and for your neighborhood.

The mother cat will know when to start the kittens on the dry food. Just keep finding the mother and the kittens will start eating the food when they are ready. If they seem to be having problems you could soften the dry food a bit with warm water. Maybe you could put the mother and the kittens in a large box if you intend on having them fixed and caring for them.

My cats are indoor outdoor with the only rule being that they have to be in at night. Do you intend to let them in your home? I hope so

Kittens eat dry food around 4 or 5 weeks. take some in a bowl and add A LITTLE water... it will soak it up and make it soft for them... they will eat it and then you can later give them just dry food. I know my question is a little confusing, but I was wondering will my cat like it if I feed him the same brand of food all the time or different brands? Also, should I feed him the same flavor, or is better to switch it up? Oh, and a lot of people say that "wet" cat food is not good for them and you should only give them that kind of food once in a while. How is it bad? I feed my cat about 3 packets or cans of wet food and nothing has ever happened to him.

Cats are very picky eaters. You should feed them the same thing consistently. It IS true that changing brands can cause your cat to have diarrhea and vomit - any change should be gradual and consistent. You should mainly feed your cat dry food - it is better for their teeth (breaks up plaque and tartar). You can feed wet food if your cat has bad teeth, but it also has more water which is good for hydration. But the main diet should be dry food, and wet food a few times a week. If you want to switch, just try different flavors. There is no harm in that. But dont switch brands frequently, as I stated earlier. Also, make sure you are giving him higer quality food. The price is the best indicator of the quality. Iams, Eukanuba, Science Diet, and even Purina is okay. The fillers and ash content in the lower quality cheap brands (Whiskas, Dads, or anything that is cheap and contains by products) can cause your cat serious health problems down the road. Also, whoever earlier stated that cats need ash in their food is very misinformed. The ash content in cat food can cause cats (and especially males) to become blocked. Then you have to take them to the hospital and have them undergo an expensive surgery that is not guaranteed to permanently take care of the problem. They must be catheterized and basically flushed, but the problem can return if you keep feeding them bad food.

I heard if you change food abruptly they can get diarrhea and have trouble until they adjust, so I mix the new food with the old and gradually change when I decide to change foods. Also, I mostly feed them dry food with occasional canned food as a treat.

I know that if I switch brands of cat food a couple of my kitties will have stomach problems. They do get treats of wet food once a month or so...but generally I feed dry indoor formula cat food. It has a variety of flavors (or so the bag states) and they supplement with fresh kills every now and again. (fenced in yard, but birds, squirrels, rats/mice, and snakes still get in)LOL, seeing as that we are talking about something that licks its own butt...I dont think taste is a big issue with cats.

I use lots of different brands and "flavors" of cat foods for my cats. They also have a home-prepared diet of turkey and chicken which I alternate with them every night. Many vets are now coming to the conclusion that a diet of only dry food can be very damaging to a cats kidneys over time. I feel it is better to give cats a variety of protein sources in their food - thats why chicken and turkey. In canned food my cats like lamb so I include that. I recently got some raw ground rabbit and my cats like that too.

I feed the same dry all the time, (royal canin) for kittens, this food is also formulated to be breed specific, but when it comes to the wet food I do the same thing 2-3 pouches a day, my cats are healthy active and beautiful, I give them different flavors of wet all the time, cats actually need wet food in their diet, cats require a substance called ash, dry food has some but no way near enough, when a cat is feed strictly dry food all his life, when he gets into his golden years, you will notice that most cats will develop urinary track infections or bladder and kidney problems, you are doing the right thing with your cat dont let anyone tell you this is wrong, my brother in law is a vet and he advises all of his kitty patients to eat both wet and dry, as long as your not having any diarrhea and the poopies are good, then thumbs up to you!!

I feed a variety of brands (about 10) and flavours of wet food to my cats. They pretty much get a different brand at each meal time. I think its good to vary brands because they are all slightly different in terms of nutritional composition. Although all complete foods will meet minimum nutritional requirements, they vary in fat content, protein content etc. so I feel that by feeding a variety my cats have a better chance of a balanced diet. I like to vary the flavours because I worry that if they have one meat protein all the time (eg chicken) they are more likely to develop an allergy to that. With dry foods, its less advisable to switch around but it can be done as long as the change over is done gradually. A change in dry food is more likely to cause an upset stomach than a change in wet food. I think wet food is by far the best for a cat. It contains water (an essential nutrient) and a lower carbohydrate content than dry foods. It is much more similar to what a cat would eat in the wild. Depends on the cat. If they are eating what you give them, dont necessarily need to change it. My cat has a picky stomach, so I can only feed her one kind of food.

Dont try too many different brands as your cat may not like some, i feed my cat go-cat but get different flavours and on her birthday and christmas i usually buy her an expensive brand as a treat. I feed my cat wet food all the time and shes 90 in cat years so i dont think its that bad for them, unless you feed it to them all the time. Its like us only eating steak constantly, it not good, as wet cat food does not have as many vitamins as dry food. Hope this is of some help to you!

Cats do not like their food changed. They dont like surprises and may turn up their nose from another food as a result. They should not be given a change in diet unless the change is made gradually. A little treat once in a while of something high in protein is appreciated but keep their main diet the same.

Wet food is actually better than dry, so you are doing the right thing. Many people dont have the facts and they assume that wet food rots the teeth or is the equivalent of a feline dessert. Thats not the case - its actually the other way around! My new vet, along with others I trust, have said that its better to offer a variety of foods. By variety they mean a variety of protein sources (meat). So it would probably be pointless to buy three different brands of cat food that all use chicken. But you could offer your cat something like 3 different meats - say chicken, turkey and venison - or some other combo. Its better to feed a single protein source than one that combines 2 or more meats in a single can. (Dont ask me why, but thats what Ive heard).Now, it isnt strictly necessary either. If your cat would prefer to eat one type of food, thats ok. The thing is, if there comes a time when you need to change the food, youll have a harder time. If you do begin to offer other foods, introduce them slowly. Offer just a nibble or perhaps mix a little in with the new food. Then gradually increase it if its accepted and doesnt cause digestive upsets. Once your cat is used to a food, you can begin rotating them however you prefer. Lots of cats are sensitive to foods and become picky eaters if it changes constantly. I always recommend 1 type of food for that reason. The reason they reccomend dry is because it helps clean their teeth, wet food tends to cling to the teeth causing early decay and build up of tartar which is important since they live so long and bad teeth have to be removed and you have to put them under anesthesia to clean/remove teeth which gets riskier the older they get. hope this helped.

My personal opinion is that it is better to give different brands and flavours. so that the cat will be used to eating a variety of things. Otherwise if just given one flavour/brand, all the time if for any reason it was not available, your cat would probably refuse to eat what was available.

Cats are very picky eaters. You should feed them the same thing consistently. It IS true that changing brands can cause your cat to have diarrhea and vomit - any change should be gradual and consistent. You should mainly feed your cat dry food - it is better for their teeth (breaks up plaque and tartar). You can feed wet food if your cat has bad teeth, but it also has more water which is good for hydration. But the main diet should be dry food, and wet food a few times a week. If you want to switch, just try different flavors. There is no harm in that. But dont switch brands frequently, as I stated earlier. Also, make sure you are giving him higer quality food. The price is the best indicator of the quality. Iams, Eukanuba, Science Diet, and even Purina is okay. The fillers and ash content in the lower quality cheap brands (Whiskas, Dads, or anything that is cheap and contains by products) can cause your cat serious health problems down the road. Also, whoever earlier stated that cats need ash in their food is very misinformed. The ash content in cat food can cause cats (and especially males) to become blocked. Then you have to take them to the hospital and have them undergo an expensive surgery that is not guaranteed to permanently take care of the problem. They must be catheterized and basically flushed, but the problem can return if you keep feeding them bad food.

I heard if you change food abruptly they can get diarrhea and have trouble until they adjust, so I mix the new food with the old and gradually change when I decide to change foods. Also, I mostly feed them dry food with occasional canned food as a treat.

I know that if I switch brands of cat food a couple of my kitties will have stomach problems. They do get treats of wet food once a month or so...but generally I feed dry indoor formula cat food. It has a variety of flavors (or so the bag states) and they supplement with fresh kills every now and again. (fenced in yard, but birds, squirrels, rats/mice, and snakes still get in)LOL, seeing as that we are talking about something that licks its own butt...I dont think taste is a big issue with cats.

I use lots of different brands and "flavors" of cat foods for my cats. They also have a home-prepared diet of turkey and chicken which I alternate with them every night. Many vets are now coming to the conclusion that a diet of only dry food can be very damaging to a cats kidneys over time. I feel it is better to give cats a variety of protein sources in their food - thats why chicken and turkey. In canned food my cats like lamb so I include that. I recently got some raw ground rabbit and my cats like that too.

I feed the same dry all the time, (royal canin) for kittens, this food is also formulated to be breed specific, but when it comes to the wet food I do the same thing 2-3 pouches a day, my cats are healthy active and beautiful, I give them different flavors of wet all the time, cats actually need wet food in their diet, cats require a substance called ash, dry food has some but no way near enough, when a cat is feed strictly dry food all his life, when he gets into his golden years, you will notice that most cats will develop urinary track infections or bladder and kidney problems, you are doing the right thing with your cat dont let anyone tell you this is wrong, my brother in law is a vet and he advises all of his kitty patients to eat both wet and dry, as long as your not having any diarrhea and the poopies are good, then thumbs up to you!!

I feed a variety of brands (about 10) and flavours of wet food to my cats. They pretty much get a different brand at each meal time. I think its good to vary brands because they are all slightly different in terms of nutritional composition. Although all complete foods will meet minimum nutritional requirements, they vary in fat content, protein content etc. so I feel that by feeding a variety my cats have a better chance of a balanced diet. I like to vary the flavours because I worry that if they have one meat protein all the time (eg chicken) they are more likely to develop an allergy to that. With dry foods, its less advisable to switch around but it can be done as long as the change over is done gradually. A change in dry food is more likely to cause an upset stomach than a change in wet food. I think wet food is by far the best for a cat. It contains water (an essential nutrient) and a lower carbohydrate content than dry foods. It is much more similar to what a cat would eat in the wild. Dont try too many different brands as your cat may not like some, i feed my cat go-cat but get different flavours and on her birthday and christmas i usually buy her an expensive brand as a treat. I feed my cat wet food all the time and shes 90 in cat years so i dont think its that bad for them, unless you feed it to them all the time. Its like us only eating steak constantly, it not good, as wet cat food does not have as many vitamins as dry food. Hope this is of some help to you!

Wet food is actually better than dry, so you are doing the right thing. Many people dont have the facts and they assume that wet food rots the teeth or is the equivalent of a feline dessert. Thats not the case - its actually the other way around! My new vet, along with others I trust, have said that its better to offer a variety of foods. By variety they mean a variety of protein sources (meat). So it would probably be pointless to buy three different brands of cat food that all use chicken. But you could offer your cat something like 3 different meats - say chicken, turkey and venison - or some other combo. Its better to feed a single protein source than one that combines 2 or more meats in a single can. (Dont ask me why, but thats what Ive heard).Now, it isnt strictly necessary either. If your cat would prefer to eat one type of food, thats ok. The thing is, if there comes a time when you need to change the food, youll have a harder time. If you do begin to offer other foods, introduce them slowly. Offer just a nibble or perhaps mix a little in with the new food. Then gradually increase it if its accepted and doesnt cause digestive upsets. Once your cat is used to a food, you can begin rotating them however you prefer. My cat was throwing up adult cat food when he was 6 weeks old...we found a wet food formula for kittens [tuna, chicken, the usuals too]and fed that to him until around 6 months. You could probably feed the cat adult wet food way before then, but my family was making sure. He liked the kitten food a lot, also. Month-old kittens can drink water, but since its so young you might want to run to somewhere like petsmart and pick up kitten milk formula to put in a bottle. If you think it can drink on its own, there is cat milk for regular cats [I think whiskas] and you simply pour a little in a saucer [I spread some out on a glass plate thats slightly caved in and my cat licks all over the plate]Good luck! The kitten must be a darling! :)

The best type of food for cats i would say is Royal CaninSite for Royal Canin;http://www. royalcanin. co. uk/my_pet/cat_p…they do lots of ranges, biscuits and wet for whatever you kitten likes, but you might want to check because no matter how expensive or nice it looks, the cat is not guaranteed to liking it. Also you might be better with your usual food and adding some chicken or whatever her favourite treat is. changing their food can upset their stomach or digestive system best not to give her an upset stomach on her birthday.. good luckJess.

The BEST type of commercial food would probably be Wellness CORE, but the higher end cat food brands are so close in nutritional value and quality that its hard to decide which is 100% best (Blue Buffalo, Merricks, Innova, EVO, etc). The BEST type of food *period* to feed a cat is a raw diet. I personally dont have time for the prep needed, but its the best possible meal to feed your cat. Now you are wanting to make a cake, but pardon me for being the voice of reason, if you use a cat food your cat is not used to, its just going to give him diarrhea. Instead, why not get him a new cat tree, or some toys, or some raw meat sliced up for dinner instead!! You will still get to do something special for your cat, and he will enjoy an out of the ordinary and healthy treat!!

I go to a natural pet store to get foods with natural ingredients. I heard that all of the other mainstream cat foods have byproducts in them (including Iams Science Diet), which are horrible for animals.

Pet food is a very debated and opinionated topic. You will get a lot of different answers. This is what Ive learnt... avoid the grocery store brands. If you absolutely must buy from the grocery store though, buy Iams. Iams is the best of the worst so to speak. What you want to look for is a low ash content in the food. About 2% or less. Most regular cat foods contain about 7-8% ash which is very bad. A diet with high ash will cause urinary infections and problems. That being said, the only brand Ive come across that has less then 2% ash is Royal Canain. Yes, it is expensive but to me its worth it. I feed both my cats Royal Canin. Wet food isnt a huge of an issue. If you find some wet food your kitty really likes then great! But it is good to feed your pets wet food from time to time because 1. Its good for their gums and 2. Hi, again. if its just for the cake then its personal preference from your kitten. The best type of food for cats i would say is Royal CaninSite for Royal Canin;http://www. royalcanin. co. uk/my_pet/cat_p…they do lots of ranges, biscuits and wet for whatever you kitten likes, but you might want to check because no matter how expensive or nice it looks, the cat is not guaranteed to liking it. Also you might be better with your usual food and adding some chicken or whatever her favourite treat is. changing their food can upset their stomach or digestive system best not to give her an upset stomach on her birthday.. good luckJess.

The BEST type of commercial food would probably be Wellness CORE, but the higher end cat food brands are so close in nutritional value and quality that its hard to decide which is 100% best (Blue Buffalo, Merricks, Innova, EVO, etc). The BEST type of food *period* to feed a cat is a raw diet. I personally dont have time for the prep needed, but its the best possible meal to feed your cat. Now you are wanting to make a cake, but pardon me for being the voice of reason, if you use a cat food your cat is not used to, its just going to give him diarrhea. Instead, why not get him a new cat tree, or some toys, or some raw meat sliced up for dinner instead!! You will still get to do something special for your cat, and he will enjoy an out of the ordinary and healthy treat!!

I go to a natural pet store to get foods with natural ingredients. I heard that all of the other mainstream cat foods have byproducts in them (including Iams Science Diet), which are horrible for animals.

Pet food is a very debated and opinionated topic. You will get a lot of different answers. This is what Ive learnt... avoid the grocery store brands. If you absolutely must buy from the grocery store though, buy Iams. Iams is the best of the worst so to speak. What you want to look for is a low ash content in the food. About 2% or less. Most regular cat foods contain about 7-8% ash which is very bad. A diet with high ash will cause urinary infections and problems. That being said, the only brand Ive come across that has less then 2% ash is Royal Canain. Yes, it is expensive but to me its worth it. I feed both my cats Royal Canin. Wet food isnt a huge of an issue. If you find some wet food your kitty really likes then great! But it is good to feed your pets wet food from time to time because 1. Its good for their gums and 2. It allows them to consume more water, which we all know is good for any species. But drinking more water can prevent urinary crystal blockages. I hope this helped! Happy birthday to your kitty! :)

As any cat owner must know, quality cat food is expensive. I only have one cat and Id like to feed him Royal Canin (the vet recommended), but the small packs are really expensive while the 15lb pack doesnt cost that much per pound. Would the food eventually go bad? How could I conserve it?

Canned food typically has an expiration date about 4-6 months after you buy it, so you would be fine. Dry will go stale very quickly unless you store it in something like Tupperware. I would look at other brands tho, Royal Canin is highly overpriced for the quality. Its packed with fillers and other crap and isnt really a good food. If you want something mid-range and still extremely healthy, look into Chicken soup for the cat lovers soul. If you want to go higher end than that, check out Wellness, Innova, Merricks, Blue Buffalo, Orijin, Felidae, and others. I buy my food by the case as it saves me money, and never had any problems.

It lists the food by brand name and if you click on the brand name, it will give you a list of the varieties and the dates and barcodes, etc. to look out for. Personally, I wouldnt trust anything anymore. The list just keeps getting longer and longer. I think for a long while I would feed homemade food and food bought from natural whole food stores.

There is only 1 dry brand pulled off - science diet _/d. I think it may even just be the a/d for cats. There are no listings about any other dry foods that have been recalled. Your best bet if you are worried (if they havent recalled them yet and your dogs are acting fine, I wouldnt worry) feed something with really low amounts of wheat gluten (that is where problems were found)
