Is it better for a dog to eat cat food or a cat to eat dog food?

Angeline

My pets constantly eat each others food. The dog eats more of the cat food than vice versa. I just wonder if I should just feed her cat food. I feed both of them dry food.

Neomi

Neither. You cannot choose to just put out the one food. Dogs are omnivorous, and need a quality kibble that is part veggies and part meat. Cats are strictly carnivores so their food is designed for a strict meat eater. Allowing the cat to eat the dog food will likely lead to dietary imbalances and long term health issues. Allowing the dog to eat the cat food is likely going to lead to obesity (cat food is much more dense in calories) and dietary imbalance that over time will likely lead to health issues. Placing the cat food out of the dogs reach is easy, try using a kiddie gate that the cat can sneak under but that bars the dogs access to the specific room. Or put kittys dish on a bookshelf, counter or other high place that Fido cannot reach. Now, as for Fido, no more free feeding, feed two small meals daily, and that is it, no in between meal snacks, no more eat as much as it wants whenever it wants. These simple changes will save you money in the short term (cat food is waaaay more expensive then dog food) and in the long term with fewer health issues. Good luck.

Hal

Dog to eat cat food.

Barrett

Neither really...cats need nutrients that are in only cat food.... not dog foodand dogs dont get enough food in cat food... dogs usually loose a lot of weight eating cat food...but if it comes down to a choice use cat food, that ensures your cat wont get sick...

Franklin

Dont feed cat food to the dog. It contains medication to combat cat urinary infections.

Berniece

A dog to eat cat food....If a cat just eats dog food it can go blind. dog food lackstaurine (aside from a few other essentials) which is absolutely a factor incat health. Cats lacking this (an element provided only in animal meat) candevelop blindness and other illness. It is essential, even if a cheaperbrand, to feed the cat food, not dog food. I repeat its imperative to feedthem cat food.

Debby

Neither

Brice

No. the nutrition is different. This can cause your dog to have extreame problems and your cat to have problems

Fonda

Feed them separate, the dog should eat the dog food only and the cat should eat the cat food only! The cat food has the nutrients a cat needs and will in time make a dog sick, and the same goes for dog food it has the nutrients a dog needsThey can share the water.

Bao

Feed a cat cat foodfed a dog dog food

Dog to eat cat food

Neither - the dog will get too much protein and the cat too little. Put the cat food up on a counter where only the cat can reach it, thats what Ive had to do.
