Is it ok to feed my cat dry dog food between his regular wet cat food feedings?

Amos

I feed my cat wet (cat food) food in the morning, afternoon and night. He eats it all within a few minutes and constantly is begging for food throught the rest of the day. My dog passed away a few weeks ago and we still ahve about 20lbs of dry small bites kibble. Right now I will give the cat a small handfull of the dog kibble between his regular feedings. Is this ok for him? He seems to like it, even more than the dry cat food I used to give him.

Take your cat to the vets

If your cat likes it, let it eat the dog food. Just break it up small enough for it to eat it o. k. Add some human food to it too, like maybe eggs, tuna, some left-over meat. Maybe your cat will even eat some cheese? We are so prone to rush to the authorities like a vet or a pet store whenever something comes up. I doubt if your pet is a wimp any more than we humans are. Ive eaten stuff I didnt particularly care for and it hasnt hurt me any. Im sure youve done the same. If it eats the dog food, I say, let it. Just add some other stuff, too. Dog and cat foods are mostly grains, so add some protein and your cat will be fine. Also, plenty of fresh water. Good luck

Although cats love dog food, the answer to your question is NO! Its not good for them and made up of different foods geared for dogs nutritional health cats are much different and have very different nutritional needs. Go get the cat a quality food, Natural Balance, Solid Gold or Blue Buffalo. Luiza, please do not answer if you have no earthly clue what you are saying

Chauncey

Although people have already answered this question, no. Cat food is high in protein and fats and can seriously harm a dog, so I cant imagine what dog food is doing to a cat. Hopefully you havent fed your cat too much.

Marge

No, dog food is made specifically for dogs. Cat food is made specifically for cats. This can lead to several problems down the road, dont do it.

Anabel

NO - dog food can actually cause a cat to go blind as it has no taurine in it. Donate the dog food to a friend with a dog or throw it away. Cats should be eating CAT food at all times.

Cecila

No, dog food is differently formulated than cat food. Dog food has a lot of grains and byproducts that cats should not eat. Buy dry cat food if you think your cat isnt eating enough.

Bari

No. Cats have a higher protein requirement than dogs do. Donate the dog food to an animal shelter.

Anthony

NOOOOOOOOO!!!!I cant believe that the poor cat hasnt exploded yet. Are you not dealing with major diarrhea?

I think some of these answerers are over-reacting. Dry dog food isnt exactly the ideal choice for a cat, but next time youre at the grocery store, read the labels. Pet food has a guaranteed analysis on it. I bet dollars to donuts if its the generally available stuff like Purina or generic store named brands, its nearly identical in ingredients and guaranteed analysis between dogs and cats. You arent doing any more harm by feeding the cat dry dog kibble than you are by feeding him wet 3 times a day (thats a bit much for an adult cat, one can of wet per day is enough for an adult). As long as you bring him to the vet for regular checkups the dog kibble will be fine for him until its empty. Im curious to see what your vet will say about it, but dont freak out too much; half these posted answers are from people who seem to believe that if you arent feeding your cat Science Diet or another very expensive brand youre a bad owner. They are slightly nuts.

Well, if the cat can chew on it, it should be ok, just be careful that it can swallow it properly.
