Cant we add cat contraceptives to the most used cat food brands?

Chauncey

We have to buy cat food for them anyway whereas we dont have the money to get them all fixed. Are there such things as cat contraceptives and has anyone thought to add them to typical cat food you find at the big stores like wal-mart so the overbreeding of cats can be stopped? Then if you really wanted kittens all you have to do is change what you feed them right? Im just curious as to if theres any way besides spaying/neutering them as I dont like that idea.

If you keep them inside i would keep the males in a diffrent room. or when the female comes in heat put her in a room to her self. but as for your question i would call a vet and ask

Armandina

Contraceptives involved female horomones, therefore there would be many problems. Too much or not enough based on how much the cat eats. Male cats cant eat that food, so what about multiple cat households. It would be expensive to do.

Kelvin

So you dont like the idea because it involves more money? Spaying is a one time thing lasts their whole lifetime. They also have healthier lives when theyre fixed.

Kip

I imagine that would be dangerous to take, and how would we know exactly who much to give the cat? Even if there were precise directions on the package, I wouldnt be too excited to give that to my cat. Id prefer like a shot or something.

Jessia

Actually, have you ever heard of a Male BC pill?! nope. because it deals with hormones and would really throw the cat world out of whack! If you have alot of cats that you can not afford to have spay or neutered, then call you local PAWS or Humane Society. they have programs in most areas where you can have your cat fixed by "donation" so if you have no money you donate nothing. but they will still do it for you and give them their shots if they are not up to date. we had both of our cats done. The only other way is KEEP THEM INSIDE!

Helen

That is about the stupidest question I have ever read. First off, if you cannot afford to spay or neuter a cat, you should not own one. Second, birth control is different for male and female cats. So your idea would involve selling male and female food. Third, they cannot even make birth control pills for human males, so what makes you think it would be available for a cat? Forth, even if your idea was possible you are talking about adding a potent medication to food and hoping that the pet owner would be willing to ensure that the cat never had too much or too little food each day. If they did they would either under-dose and the medicine would not work, or overdose and die. The only problem with cats is that irresponsible pet owners dont get them fixed and then let them roam around outside. This leads to over population. Get a cat, get it fixed, keep it indoors. Be a responsible pet owner. Its that simple. If you are not willing to invest a little money in your pet, dont own one.
