ok so wet food 4 cats, how much? etc?
My 17 year old cat went to the vet today, the vet took a blood sample and told us that she has diabetes. We took her because she was peeing a really lot, and we didn't know what was wrong. We don't want to inject her with needles twice a day because she would hate it, and we don't want to put her through pain. So we are going to try and control it though diet. The vet gave us Purina DM to try. Will giving her this food help her? Will she stop peeing so much? Will she stay healthy? Can we still give her treats? I did research, but I still want to know more. How can I help her? Is it bad that we won't give her insulin shots? Thanks for the help. its not that I don't want to give her insulin shots, I can't because I'm in college and can't take her with me, and no one at my house wants to give her shots, so I'd only be able to on the weekends, and that wouldn't work. I feel so bad, I want to help her.

I just found out my 17 year old cat has diabetes?
I have a male adult cat who has been troubled by a horrible illness called Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) I was told by the vet he'd end up with cancer in the colon. Yes, he had chronic colitis, a problem in the large intestine which was causing my pet bleed through the rectum and horrible, nonstop diarrhea. My kitty was getting weary of his suffering and I was getting so, so tired of throwing away bed sheets, cleaning after him every day sometimes 2 times a day. I could not sleep well just thinking of what else I could have possibly found dirty in the house. He never went outside the box, but all that blood, with colon mucose coming out he could not control. My cat got to a point where he could not sit down comfortably, and there was bloody diarrhea in his tail, kitchen counter, tables, furniture etc ALL THE TIME. I did not want to watch my cat give up and not do anything, so I did some research and finally switched him to a species appropriate diet: cooked or raw meat with bones, organs and probiotics and digestive enzymes. I now am keeping all my cats on the BARF diet, always making sure I get fresh food from animals which were not cured or injected with substances to keep the meat fresh. I also make sure to keep the phosphorus-calcium ratio right, and it's been a year now since I have not seen signs of IBD. My cat’s stools are formed and healthy. My vet says my cat looks incredibly fine. So, I just wanted to see how many follow this diet and what you think of it. I am aware of the risks, like toxoplasmosis, but my cat was dying in front of my eyes on Science Diet, Purina, Iams, Prescription foods like Hill's z/d etc, and many, many more expensive commercial foods and not one helped my poor feline. He was on antibiotics and prednisone all the time and nothing ever worked! So, I learned that cats are obligate carnivores and need to eat other animals to live a better life. I have noticed too many cases of IBD, Diabetes, Obesity, UTI, Kidney Disease, and cancer, all because we're feeding species inappropriate foods to our precious pets. The number of sick ones keeps increasing, and we are responsible. Anyone trying out this diet? I'd love to hear some of your experiences. If anyone is interested, this website I'm about to provide is one of the best and I am a client of them. I encourage everybody to take a look. Their service is high quality. BARF diet for Cats...anyone?
I'm new in the cat game, but I have had puppies before. I just rescued or adopted a stray kitten. I've been feeding her purina kitten chow (dry) mixed in with some wet food, (Whiskas Jr.). She's eating, but man her out put smells terrible. I've read online that some of these cat food brands can give cats diabetes, and what not, and I do not want my baby going through all that. So, price not being a problem, what would be the best thing I can feed her? Oh, I'd have to buy it online. (I'm in the army and stationed on a super small base in Germany, hence why I got the only kitten food they had)... Thanks!!!

What should I be feeding my 9 week old kitten?
My cat is overweight (16 pounds). He has been eating Purina Indoor formula dry food most of his life. I recently discovered that dry foods like this are bad for cats, leading to obesity and diabetes. So I discovered Wellness brand and I think I like it the best. He was very pleased with a half can of the wet food this morning and hasn't begged to eat again (usually he's eating all day). But he needs to lose weight. We got a kitten a week ago and the two of them have been running around like crazies, which is more exercise than he's gotten since he was a kitten himself. But I want a food that will help him too. Has anyone any info on the Healthy Weight formula by Wellness? Or would the wet food alone be enough? Thank you for the answers. I currently have the turkey formula, with the little triangle saying "grain free". How do I figure out how much he is supposed to weigh? I don't know where the line is from normal to obese. Kitten weighs 2 .5 pounds ans had been trying to eat my older cat's Wellness food. She has to stay on the kitten chow until she's older. Prior to today he was secretly eating her kitten chow. They're all mixed up. Maybe I should switch her to Wellness for kittens.

Wellness Brand cat food ?
I have three cats...one of which is diabetic. I have to feed them all the same food, & they sometimes get upset bellies or hairballs, so it needs to be a dry food so the puke is easier to clean up. I currently feed Purina DM. My cat's diabetes is controlled solely by his diet. Recently I've been looking into the ingredients in Purina DM, and I'm disgusted. I want to switch his food, but I'm unsure which would be the best switch. I'm leaning toward EVO or Blue Buffalo Wilderness. Does anyone feed these to their diabetic cat? If not, what do you feed? Thanks!!

What dry cat food do you feed your diabetic cat?
I've noticed that so many more people in the cat section feed low quality cat foods whereas in the dog section many more people are aware of what they are feeding their dogs. In the dog section, if someone asks a pet food question, there's like ten people in there explaining about higher quality dog foods. In the cat section, it feels like I'm alone with another two or three people while all the other answerers are recommending low quality foods like Meow Mix, Purina, Iams etc. and recommending feeding dry instead of wet. My cat food writeup:Not all pet food is made equally. A lot of it is full of corn, by-products, dyes, unhealthy preservatives, filler grains and all sorts of nasty stuff. A lot of pet food companies are perfectly happy to the dump cheap leftovers and things that aren't safe for human consumption (from human food processing plants) into their foods. Will it kill your cat? No, it has to be nutritionally complete and safe to even be marketed. Is it healthy? Not by a long shot. Corn is a low quality ingredient you never want to see in your pet food. Corn and low quality grains are two of the biggest culprits when it comes to food allergies in our pets. Thankfully, there are some excellent cat foods being made these days that include organic, human grade ingredients rather than trash not fit for human consumption. Examples of low quality foods to avoid: Anything you can find in a grocery store will be low end, Purina, Iams, Eukanuba, Science Diet, Royal Canin, Whiskas, Fancy Feast, Friskies, Meow Mix. Examples of high quality foods to look for: Innova, Wellness, Solid Gold, Felidae, Fromm Four Star, Merrick, GO Natural, Nature's Variety Prairie, Nature's Logic, Artemis Fresh Mix, Timber Wolf Organics. Although the high quality foods are more expensive, you're getting what you're paying for. Less filler material means more concentrated nutrients... this means you typically need to feed far less of the high quality food than you would of the low quality one. Which also means less poop! Before following your vet's food recommendation, keep in mind that vets get /very/ little nutritional training during their schooling. Besides that, what training they /do/ get is usually sponsored or taught by the crappy pet food companies! They also often get paid to sell some of their products at their clinics (Science Diet, Royal Canin etc.)A great option is to go with an entirely grainless diet. Diets high in grain have been attributed to problems with diabetes in cats. Cats are obligate carnivores, so why should there be grain in their diet? Many of the high quality foods now put out grainless formulas. Some good grainless diets include: Innova EVO, Wellness CORE, Blue Wilderness, Nature's Variety Instinct, Orijen, Horizon Legacy, Merrick Before Grain, Fromm Surf & Turf, Now!, and Sold Gold Indigo Moon, Taste of the Wild. Some pretty decent foods can even be found in common pet stores. Petsmart carries Blue Buffalo products (such as the excellent grain free diet Blue Wilderness). Petco carries Wellness, Solid Gold, Natural Balance, Eagle Pack Holistic, Blue Buffalo, Castor & Pollux Organix, Pinnacle, and Halo. If you can't find a food, most of the high quality food brands have websites with store locators on them. Another option, if you can't find anywhere around you that sells good foods, is to order your pet food online. Here's an excellent place to do so: http://www. petfooddirect. com/store/Remember that foods should be switched gradually (mixing new slowly in with the old over about a two week period), especially when switching to a higher quality one, so as not to upset tummies. Another option for feeding cats is to feed raw. This is something that should be thoroughly researched before being attempted:http://www. barfworld. com/http://www. rawfedcats. org/http://www. rawfed. com/http://www. wysong. net/controversies/rawmeat. shtmlNow the question is, do you feed wet or dry? Wet is the correct answer. The reason is, in the wild, cats normally get most of their water content directly from their prey items and drink very little. Domestic cats are no different, and because of the fact that they are designed to take in water with their meal, they have a very low thirst drive. Cats often just don't drink enough. This leads to urinary tract infections and crystals. The bit about dry food being better for teeth is a myth and has not been proven in the least (cats barely even chew their dry food and, really, does a pretzel clean /your/ teeth? Cats should have their teeth brushed with cat toothbrushes and cat toothpaste at least a few times a week as well as see the vet for dental cleanings when necessary /regardless/ of what they are being fed). Canned/wet food is better because it more closely mimics the cat's natural diet. More on why canned food is best:http://www. catinfo. org/ (Excellent cat nutrition information by a vet)http://cats. about. com/cs/catfood/a/cannBlah. Question cut off. http://cats. about. com/cs/catfood/a/canned_food. htmhttp://www. littlebigcat. com/index. php? action=library&act=show&item=whycatsneedcannedfoodhttp://www. felinefuture. com/nutrition/bpo_ch4.phpAnother option to get cats to drink more would be a cat fountain. Cats tend to like to drink from running water and cat fountains see to that need, encouraging cats to take in more water. More:http://www. dogfoodanalysis. com/dog_food_reviews/ (Dog food reviews. It's for dogs, but most of the high quality brands also put out excellent cat foods. Four stars is a decent food, five stars is a great food, and six stars is an excellent food.)I guess my question is, why do cat owners seem so far behind in terms of cat nutrition? Another question, does my write up change your view on what you're feeding your cat at all? Really? So you think I should type all that up every single time I want to answer a question? I may be copy pasting but I'm copy pasting /my own words/, it's not like I'm copy pasting something from another website. It's /insanely/ frustrating JC, you're right. It drives me bonkers! Thank you, Ken, it makes me feel better to think we are starting to make a difference :)Brian, I do include some links for raw feeding but I don't know much about it myself so I kind of just left it up to the individual owner to follow the links and educate themselves. I only know that it's an excellent diet option when done correctly :)

High/low quality cat foods?
How are you, We have two four-months old male cats, not yet neutered. One is named Mario, the other Luigi. I feed them wet cat food in the morning and at night. During the day they nibble on Purina Naturals Dry Cat Food. Luigi has kept normal weight, he is slender and his coat is shiny. Mario, on the other hand, has been putting on weight very quickly. He always seems hungry and drinks water very often. Other than that, he looks and acts healthy. I've had cats all my life, but never encountered such rapid weight gain in a young cat. Can this be tied to diabetes in a cat or maybe something else? These cats eat the same amount of food. What bothers me is how fast Mario seems to be putting on weight. I don't think that's normal. Thanks for your help. I'll definitely address this with the vet when we have them neutered here shortly.

Who knows about cats and diseases/disorders?
My cat was recently diagnosed with diabetes. He gets insulin injections twice a day. The vet recommended Purina DM. I would love to find a good dry & canned food that doesn't need a prescription & does not need to be purchased from my vet. Thanks for your help.

My 10 year old cat has diabetes. What food is good for him?
My cat was diagnosed with diabetes one week ago. She's on 2 units 2x day. I decided not to give Purina DM which is what the vet prescribed. I've bought Wellness canned food and she loves it. Before the diagnose, I used to feed my cats IAM's can and dry food. Now, with all I've read, I switched over to Wellness canned food. My cats love it! I want to stop dry food all together but I don't know if my diabetic cat is suppose to have food available to eat all day? Of course, that would be in limited amounts, but should she be able to graze until I get home and feed her the canned food? Would she be alright if I only feed her canned food 2x a day? Please help, I want to do what's best for her... Also, what about my other 3 cats that are not diabetic, would they too be O. K eating canned food 2x a day? I am full of questions......

Will my diabetic cat be OK if I just feed her wet food 2x a day? Are they to have food accessible all day?
Our cat is a petite 5 year old spayed Siamese. She weighs 14 pounds now, and we're worried. She is a 100% indoor cat with a practically non-existent exercise level (we try to engage her in play, but she isn't interested). We don't want her to get diabetes or any other disorder. We want to give her the best possible food for her to lose weight. Can your kind answers provide brand names and quantities, please? We have shifted her temporarily to our other cat's Purina DM on a once a feeding schedule. I can provide more details if needed. Thank you very much.
