10 Reasons To Use Wood Pellets For Cat Litter

If you're a cat owner, then perhaps you've heard of wood pellet cat litter, but haven't tried it for yourself. Here's what you need to know.

Absorbent Wood pellet cat litter is highly absorbent, and so makes good litter and bedding. As well as being ideal for cats, it's also suitable for use as horse bedding and for other animals too. Premium pellets are more absorbent than economy pellets, but are also more expensive.

Disposal This form of cat litter is easy to dispose of once it has been used. As it is natural, it can be composted rather than binned, so will reduce the amount of rubbish you produce and the amount that goes into landfill.

Low odour Unlike some other forms of litters, using pellets for litter will help to mask the smell, and so keep your home odour free. The smell of wood is also natural and pleasant rather than synthetic.

Low sawdust Quality pellets will produce very little sawdust. Sometimes badly packed bags, or poor quality pellets will mean that there is a lot of sawdust in the bag, which is unusable, so buying a reputable brand or seeking out the opinions of others is recommended.

100% natural wood The pellets are made from natural wood from the off cuts and waste from the wood manufacturing process, and so there's no need to worry about chemicals, or anything that may irritate your cat.

Environmentally friendly As the pellets are biodegradable and made from recycled wood, they are extremely environmentally friendly. Not only will you be giving your cat the best litter, you'll also be doing your bit to save the planet too.

Availability Pellets are available from many pet shops, and even some supermarkets, so you'll always be able to find them.

Buy In bulk Buying your cat litter in bulk from a dedicated wood pellet supplier will mean that you get much better value and quality. You'll also be able to get them delivered to your door without having to worry about loading and unloading your car.

Affordable Wood pellet litter is very affordable, and will cost you less than your current form of cat litter for the same amount. Instead of having to choose between the economy brands to save money, or the more expensive brands that will be better for your cat, you can be assured that pellets are cheap, and good for your cat.

Value for money Wood pellets represents excellent value for money, and no matter whether you've got one cat, or run a cattery, you'll notice the savings, and your cat will notice the difference in quality.

Why not try wood pellet cat litter today, and see why so many people recommend it?

Buying a Kitten

When you are considering buying a kitten there are some things that you should consider before putting down money. Yes kittens are extremely cute and you will probably fall in love with a few dozen if you take the time to do some kitten shopping. Before buying a kitten, you should consider if you or anyone in your home is allergic. It would not be a great thing to pay a few hundred dollars to find out that you or your child had an allergy to your new kitten. You should also consider if you are looking to breed a certain species and show them in shows or if the newest member of the family will be just that a family member.

When buying a kitten there are quite a few different places that you can look. There are specialized breeders for those kittens that are show cats. There are always the rescue shelters or you can find someone in the neighborhood that has a litter that they are looking for homes for the kittens. You should consider avoiding any place that is brand new, especially new shelters, and you should deal with those that have a good reputation for breeding or your local humane society. Typically if the person is giving away the kittens they could be from a stray they found and you would want to stay away from that. The main reason would be that you are not sure what health problems might be coming with the free kitten resulting in higher than normal veterinarian bills. If you are buying a kitten online do some research on the breeder, ask for references of those that they have sold too and take the time to go and visit the breeder to ask questions. As well if you are picking a kitten up from a neighbor, then make sure they own the mother cat.

After you have located the breeder or place that you are happy with choosing your new kitten and are close to buying that kitten, take a moment to consider the following things that vets say are very important in getting a healthy cat. The kitten should have clear eyes, their ears should be clean and free of mites, they should be playful with their litter mates and when they see you should come to be petted and seem happy just to have some human contact. Your new kitten should also have a shiny coat and there should be no signs of diarrhea in or around the litter box. Following those few things will ensure buying a kitten will be a great experience for both of you.

Kicking Off the Search For Your First Cat

So, you want to adopt a cat? Good for you! Cats are loving, loyal animals with great personalities. When you first start looking for a cat, you may become overwhelmed with breed types, places to buy/adopt cat, and kitten care. Just stop and breathe!

First, you will want to decide whether you wish to purchase a purebred kitten, or adopt one from a shelter. I personally, always adopt my cats from shelters, especially if I know the cat is unwanted. By doing this, you are saving a life and giving a cat a good home. However, you may choose to purchase a purebred cat simply so that you know its lineage. It is up to you. Purebred cats can be quite expensive, so if you choose this route, make sure you have enough money.

If you chose purebred, then you will likely be adopting a kitten. However, if you choose a shelter cat, you may be able to get either a kitten or an adult cat. Adult cats are nice for busy, adult households. They are calm, (usually) already litter box trained, friendly, and cuddly. They are also less likely to be adopted than kittens. Kittens are a great option for those with a lot of energy and time. Kittens need to be fed often and have a lot of energy. They also love to play.

Where should you begin looking for a cat to adopt? I usually visit the local shelters first. Spend some time there and just play with the cats. Usually one will just seem right for you. Be careful though, shelter adoption is addictive! Many people go in for one cat and end up with two! If there are not shelters in the area, or you visited them and no cats tickled your fancy, you may wish to try Craigslist. You will often find cats free to a good home on Craigslist, depending on where you live. Lastly, if you are going to buy a purebred, then you can go online and check out breeders sites.

You will want to buy a pet carrier to take with you to take the cat home. A loose cat in the car is not a good idea, especially a scared one as your will be. Make a vet appointment as soon as possible after taking the cat home. If you got it from a shelter or a breeder, then you should have the medical records which will say which vaccinations the cat has had as well as whether he/she is neutered/spayed. A new cat in your home can be a bit of an adjustment, but it is always worth it! Congratulations!

HEPA Filtration And Cats

Combine cat hair and dander with the normal indoor pollutants that are found in virtually every indoor space, and you've got air that can cause problems for those with repiratory problems. And can create problems for those who were formerly healthy. Get 5 important answers about what HEPA filtration can do for you and your furry friend.

Will it filter hair and fur? A high efficiency particle arresting (most often abbreviated as HEPA) filter is incredibly efficient at removing airborne particles that are.3 microns or larger. So it can definitely remove hair and fur that are in the air.

Particles that are near or about .3 microns in size are invisible to the human eye, but hair and fur are all too visible and can remove by less sophisticated filters such as pre-filters. If the unit does not contain this type of inexpensive filter then the HEPA will definitely take them out of circulation.

Will this type of technology eliminate cat dander? These invisible flakes of dead skin known as dander are one of the most potent allergens known. It is the protein in the flakes that sends many people's allergies into overdrive. So the cat dander can easily be eliminated.

What other types of pollutants will it get rid of? Because a filter doesn't care about the source of the particles, it is not only good for cat-related particles but other more normal indoor pollutants as well. That means it can remove dust, dust mites, mold and mildew spores, as well as airborne bacteria and viruses down to .3 microns.

Will it get rid of litter dust? Many cat lovers put the litter box in the bathroom which makes perfect sense. However, it your pet likes to scratch before, afterwards, or just for good measure, it can create air that is really thick with dust.

A HEPA can remove these airborne particles. A purifier with variable filtration speeds can give you the option of speeding up filtration when there is a lot of it in the air and slowing it down when there is less of a need for it.

Will it eliminate urine odor? Unfortunately, this type of filter will only eliminate particles. Gaseous pollutants such as urine, odors, and other smells are best removed by a carbon-based filter. And even as effective as carbon can be at removing odors, it will still need a chemical additive to enhance its ability to remove the ammonia that is so offensive when dealing with cat urine.

Nothing will get rid of all of the particles a pet can produce, but for those of us who love them what they give us in return makes them worth it.

But the ultimate air cleaner for cats should have not only a HEPA filter, but several pre-filters, and a carbon enhanced filter for urine. That way one purifier can do everything you need it to when you have a cat as part of your family.

Cat Food: What Is the Best for Your Cat?

What type of food should you feed your cat to ensure that they receive the proper nutrition? What is the best mixture of food to maximise your cat's life span?

Firstly we should examine the diet of a cat in its natural environment. Out in the wild a cat's diet will consist of entirely animal tissue. They would normally eat the bodies of small animals, including all of its stomach content which is jam packed full of nutrients such as fibre that is lacking in an animal's muscle tissue. It's no surprise that cat owners believe that fresh meat is the best food for their pets. Unfortunately this is not true, a diet of fresh meat doesn't provide a whole and balanced diet because they contain hardly any protein and are low in important nutrients like calcium. In all honesty, mainstream cat food may contain more nutrients compared to fresh meat.

Some cat owners also believe that it's safe to feed their cats on a completely vegetarian diet. The answer to this question is simply no! Cat's can't get their vital nutrients from a complete vegetarian meal unlike humans are able to.

Cats were originally specialised hunters, but they have lost this ability during the process of evolution. They are prone to skin problems is they don't get enough fatty acids which can be found in animal flesh alone. Another issue is that a shortage of the amino acid 'taurine' which is vital building block for proteins in the body. This shortage can sadly cause blindness and can even cause heart failure. To put it simply cats are carnivores and need plenty of protein rich foods!

It is alright to feed a cat a premium dry food because they provide the right balance of protein and nutrients to keep your cat healthy. But you must remember to provide fresh water at all times to prevent dehydration. Dry food is more convenient affordable, and hygienic than fresh or tinned food. Dry food allows your cat to exercise their teeth and it also reduces the build of tar tar which can be a severe problem if your cat is just fed on a soft mushy diet.

They like to think that they are independent but they soon return home when it's food time or nap time. But they don't fool us! Cats are complex characters and their dietary requirements are just as complicated and they are experts are wrapping us around their tiny paws. There are companies that specialise in premium cat food, so why not take a look to see what's available on the market, don't just settle for your typical supermarket products that really are no good for your pet

Microchipping Your Pet - The Best Chance for Lost Pet Recovery

The statistics on the number of pets that are euthanized each year are heartbreaking. According to the most recent study by the National Council on Pet Population Study and Policy, more than half of all the pets that enter shelters are euthanized. A larger percentage of cats are euthanized, because cats are less likely to enter a shelter with some form of identifying information, i.e. a collar or tag. I have so often heard about a family pet being euthanized before the family could locate their whereabouts; sometimes within hours of the pet entering a shelter. Shelters are spilling over with animals, and the animals the shelter considers "less desirable", are usually put down first. This is particularly troubling for me because two of my four house-cats are not social with anyone other than our family. Heaven forbid, one of them should escape and find her way into the local shelter. That is the primary reason I decided to have all of my cats microchipped.

What is a microchip and how is it implanted into my pet?

A microchip is an identifying integrated circuit that is placed just under the skin of your pet. The tiny chip, about the size of a grain of rice, is made from biocompatible materials, which means it is non-toxic and will not cause an allergic reaction. The method for inserting the chip is as easy as a vaccination. Your pet is not placed under anesthesia, nor is there any recovery time. A veterinarian places the chip in a hypodermic needle and injects the chip just under the skin, usually between the shoulder blades. The chip then bonds to the tissue in your pet usually within 24 hours, which should prevent the chip from moving around. Once the chip is in place, it does not wear-out or expire; therefore it should last during the life span of your pet. Cost varies, anywhere from $30 -$100, but it is a one-time cost.

How does the microchip work?

Using RFID (Radio Frequency Identification), the chip simply stores an identifying number associated with your pet; it is not a GPS device that can locate your pet. Afterwards, the pet owner must register the pet with the appropriate microchip company. If your pet is found with a microchip, with no identifying information in a database, the chip is useless. Some companies charge a small registration fee to register your information. Once your pet's information has been placed in the database, the information can be accessed through scanning the microchip with a scanner or reader. Microchip companies usually donate these devices to shelters and veterinarian offices. Any information changes should be updated in the data base. For instance, should you move, it is very important that your address and contact information be updated with the microchip company, especially contact numbers.

Microchip vs. Collar and Tag

Some argue that a microchip is unnecessary since their pet has a collar and identifying tag, and many cat owners who have "indoor only cats", suggest that since their cat never goes outside, why should they invest in a microchip. First, tags and collars can fall off or be removed, leaving your pet vulnerable, without identifying information. Second, even a "housecat" can accidentally find itself outside. A visitor may leave a door open too long, or a natural disaster may leave your pet out in the elements. A microchip is the only permanent method of identification that will increase the chances that your pet will be returned to you, should the unexpected happen.

What happens if my pet gets lost?

If your pet is taken to a veterinarian office or a shelter, he/she will be scanned. Provided the chip has been registered, the identifying information will display on the scanner. Depending on the policy of the microchip company, either the microchip company will be contacted - they in turn, will contact the owner; or the pet owner will be contacted directly by the veterinarian or shelter, using the registered information in the database. This is why it is so important to keep the information accurate and up to date.

Unfortunately, due to the different frequencies, and scanners used by microchip companies, the system is not perfect. However more microchip companies are providing universal scanners that can read a range of frequencies. In addition, work is being done by the American Microchip Advisory Council to develop a network of the various company databases, which will streamline the process for locating owner information. It is best to contact local veterinarians and shelters to educate yourself on their systems for handling lost pets before choosing a microchip company. Even with a less than perfect system, microchipping does bring pets and owners back together.

Does it work?

Yes! Research has shown that the return rate of a microchipped cat entering a shelter is 20 times higher than the return rate of a cat that enters with no identifying information. Linda Lord - lead author of a study conducted by the Department of Veterinary Preventative Medicine at Ohio State University stated the following, "We found that shelters did much better than they thought they did at returning animals with microchips to their owners." She added that pet owners should strongly consider microchipping their pets.

With the growing popularity of microchipping, microchip companies are under more pressure to change their standards to a more universal system for returning pets to their owners. This is great news for pet owners, making microchipping an even more accurate method of pet recovery. A microchip used in conjunction with a collar and ID tag is the best way to ensure that your pet finds his/her way home.

What to Do If Your Cat Is Diabetic

My son is a veterinarian. We often discuss diabetes because I "caught" it from somebody a couple of years ago.

I have the Type II variety where insulin is not processed properly. The C-cells in the pancreas are blocked by fat cells as shown by the New Castle University study.

That is how I dropped my blood sugar levels to normal. I stop using dairy, except for the fat-free varieties, and went to natural grains, legumes, fruits and vegetables. It took five weeks but I got rid of the problem. I hope once and for all. I avoid most processed foods.

I limit myself to chicken and fish, but do allow some lean beef as a garnish or in a sandwich. Just not too often. I also learned that some Mexican restaurants will give you ranch beans instead of re-fried beans and will leave the cheese in the kitchen.

But enough about me. I'm not a cat. I'm an eighty-year-old man with a wondering mind.

Cats are not humans. Their anatomy knows how to process a heavy diet of meaty critters. It is when they eat processed foods that they get diabetes.

My son says that cats are cured of diabetes in a very short time just by changing their diet to a meat diet. Purina, and at least one other company, is now making food for diabetic cats. It is only right that they are doing something to help the situation.

If your cat is getting along in years, it will be more subject to diabetes. The pancreatic C-cells are not functioning properly and insulin is blocked from processing sugar. Your cat will probably urinate often, crave water to the extent that he just can't get enough of it, will start eating way too much and will gain weight, and then will not eat and will lose weight. He is in big trouble.

I say "he" because he is more likely to get diabetes than "she."

Ketones can form and damage body organs. The kidneys are sometimes affected. It is the same for cats and humans.

What do you do if your suspect that your cat has diabetes. I would read the labels on cat foods and find foods that are mostly meat. Your veterinarian can advise you on this issue. Are there mice around your house?

It's amazing how much diet is responsible for disease in animals and humans. The Ute Indians were a strong and healthy people before the white man took him away from his natural foods and put him on a reservation diet of white flour and alcohol. That was the substitute for nutrient rich fruits, nuts, roots and wild game such as lean venison.

Treating disease is big business in this world of ours. It seems some businesses do not want to cure diabetes, they want to sell test strips, meters and drugs.

Sometimes you have to take matters into your own hands. The diabetes diet and low-glycemic-index food books may be fine but if you are human and get the fat out of your diet, you probably will be better off. But for cats, they need meat.

Now get that kitty to my son, the vet. He has fifteen kids and a bunch of them are in college with spouses and kids to support.

Steps to "Potty Train" Your Cat

If you ever happen to have a pet cat of your own, you could run into burdens with it defecating all over the house. You just may be driven crazy over this, and you plainly cannot handle it any longer. You ought to train your cat to utilize the litter box. Yet, this isn't a straightforward task. Besides, there are several people out there who don't even have the slightest idea on what a litter box is. Another thing you want to take into account is the fact that you should train your cat in every aspect, including potty training. The reality is, a number of the many pet owners on this planet often leave their cats to roam about the house, defecating everywhere they choose. This is the time for you to begin realizing that you should train it straight away to be able to avoid driving yourself crazy in cleaning up their mess. Below are a bunch of simple steps to adhere to when potty training your cat.

Keep track of your cat's defecating pattern. you might want to be aware of which area in the house they regularly relieve themselves, including urination. You should also keep a close eye on behavioral signs that indicate when they ought to do it. Fortunately for you, cats are creatures that develop habits, and they would get used to doing their business in a distinct area with continual training. They even have certain schedules in doing so.

You'll then have to prepare a litter box in an area that's quiet and out of your way. Besides, in a manner similar to their owners, cats need to spend a bit of privacy in relieving themselves when eliminating their stool and urine. You should also make sure that the litter box has high enough sides to evade scattering of their mess each time they scratch on it. Always bear in mind that litter boxes ought to be cleaned everyday, to be able to refrain from having them search for another area in your household.

The final process in training pet cats to relieve themselves is by actually training them to make use of the litter box. When you be aware of the cat giving away signals to begin pooping, you will need to bring it to the litter box. This actually helps you out substantially since it makes it possible for your pet feline to get used to using this instead of the previous spot they accustomed to eliminate in. You can then give your pet cat a reward for doing a good job.

Free Cat Tree Plans

Are you looking for free cat tree plans? If I can give you one piece of advice, it is to not download any plans for building cat trees or any other type of furniture for free. Low quality print outs, and bad design plans are the only thing you will get, and you will only regret not paying a low price of a couple of dollars for something that is 10 times better in quality.

I have been woodworking for almost 20 years now, and in that time I have seen a lot of bad woodworking blue prints, and that includes free cat tree plans. I not only make my own furniture and sell it to the public, but I also give advice to friends and family, and the general public too, and that is why I have written this simple article to help others.

I recently came across some bad quality build plans not only for cat towers, but also for wooden outdoor furniture too, and as a test I downloaded the blueprints. What I found was bad quality print outs, and it was nothing to do with my printer. I also found through the bad printing, at how low quality and amateur the build plans were, and I was shocked at how anyone would try to use these.

Building any type of woodworking project has to start from the build plans, and a cat tree is no exception. I know building a cat tower is not difficult, but with your cats welfare on the line, you wouldn't want to risk making something that could not only be dangerous to you, bu also your cat.

The benefit of using quality build plans is also the choice of build types, material lists and detailed instructions. The reason I like the choices of design, is for many reasons. If you have a small house, you can make you cat tree fit the size of your house, and a larger one if you have more room.

The other great benefit of downloading quality cat tree plans, is you can start your own business, just like I, and many others have. You can build a cat tower for next to nothing, and if you make a larger quantity, you can save more money, and make more profit, because of material purchases and making more in one period, will mean you can mass build.

I am sure you can see the downsides of using free cat tree plans, and why purchasing a set of quality prints can mean many things, not only in time-saving, but also in monetary saving too.

Tips For Bathing Your Cat When It Gets Really Dirty

In general, cats are very clean creatures. The only time you ought to need to give one a bath is if they have gotten very dirty. This is not an easy thing to do, so it is actually nice that you do not have to do it often. If you do need to bathe your cat, you will want to read the following tips - it should make it much easier for you and your cat!

The first thing you will need to do is decide whether you are going to bathe the cat in the bathtub or in the sink. A lot of people prefer the sink, as it is a comfortable height, and the cat fits in it well. However, there is something to be said about being able to enclose the cat in the bathroom. It is up to you which one you choose.

Before you begin bathing the kitty, you will want to gather your supplies. Once you have the cat in the water you do not want to have to run and go get something. You will need shampoo, cups, a sponge, and two towels. This is immensely easier if you can find someone willing to help you too.

Put a rubber mat on the bottom of your sink or tub, so that your cat does not slide all around. Fill the sink with a few inches of body temperature water. The water should not feel warm nor cold to the touch. Fill a cup with warm water and mix in shampoo.

Now, you should go find your cat. Take the cat and with a firm, but gentle grip, lower him into the water. Talk to him calmly and pet him while you do this to keep him calm. Allow him a few minutes to get used to the water. If you have a shower sprayer, you can use it now, if not, simply use one of the cups. Thoroughly wet the cat with the water. Once the cat is wet, gently massage the shampoo into his fur.

Rinse the shampoo out, either with the cup or shower sprayer. Massage her fur very gently and try to wring out the rest of the shampoo. There should be no more bubbles in her fur. If you leave any shampoo on her it may irritate her skin.

Once the cat is clean, lift her out of the tub or sink using a towel. Wipe her down gently with the towel. Let her go once she is not dripping wet.

Does Your Cat Have a Fur-Ball Problem?

Fur-balls are a fairly common aspect of a cat's life. In the wild fur-balls are often ejected orally which is a natural feature developed as a means of coping with the fur eaten with mice and other similar animals. As most domesticated cats are fed a constant diet of tinned / packet food their fur-balls will nearly always be as a result of grooming their own coat. Although many cats can cope with a certain amount of fur ingestion some will take in large quantities which can lead to problems. Long haired cats are particularly at risk along with cats that live very inactive lives. Elderly and overweight cats are also often affected. Obsessive grooming due to stress, fleas and various skin irritations will also add to the problem. Once fur intake reaches higher than normal levels it will begin to build up in the stomach and cause bowel disorders.

Grooming is something cats do naturally. Their tongues are fairly rough and will pick up hair easily. As they can't really spit out the hair it is generally swallowed. In most cats this fur is passed through the stomach without any undue problems. It's much like hair which builds up in bathroom pipework, u-bends and the like, which will often be the one of the causes of a blockage. Your cat is obviously no job for a plumber but trapped hair in your cat's stomach can accumulate as it is continually taken in through grooming.

The action of ejecting a fur-ball may be a little alarming if you've never seen it happen before. Some cats will pass hair all the way through their systems and finally eject it in their faeces while others will dramatically vomit out a fur-ball. If your cat has fur-balls it may be noticeably lethargic and / or constipated. It's always worth visiting your vet in order to make certain you are not jumping to conclusions.

If its apparent fur-balls are a problem you may want to give thought to your cat's diet. Just as with humans an increase in fibre is usually a good thing. For bigger problems your vet may suggest a petroleum based laxative. Some such products contain a mixture of cod liver oil, malt extract and white soft paraffin. Sounds a bit of a peculiar mix but they are usually a good solution to the problem. Katalax is one such treatment which can be administered to adult cats as well as kittens. Dosage will depend mainly on the size of the cat. Sometimes treatment will need to be given every few days or increased during times when the cat is moulting.

Once your cat is free of fur-balls you should notice it pick up and quickly return to its normal routine. If your cat has had fur-balls it's worth monitoring them for repeat bouts. If the problem is recurring frequently your vet is best placed to investigate further. If recovery seems slow it may be that fur-balls have given rise to a stomach irritation which may take a bit longer for the cat to recover from.

What Can Be Done About Your Cat's Hunting?

Your pet may be domesticated but it is an accomplished hunter. Even if there are no mice, a cat will hunt birds, rabbits and other small animals. It does not matter if you feed your cat; its natural instincts require it to hunt. You will never have worry about your cat going hungry. It will take care of itself. If you watch your cat you will see that the hunting instinct is paramount. Even when the cat is sleeping it is ready to pounce and seek prey. You can watch your cat dosing on the deck one minute, and in the next minute it will be returning with the evening meal of fresh rabbit.

So what should you do when a cat presents a gift of fresh kill that was lovingly placed at your feet? Show your appreciation! These gifts show that the cat considers you a member of the family. You should pet your cat to show your appreciation, speak to it lovingly and give it a treat. There is nothing that you can do to make a healthy cat stop this behavior. It is not possible to discourage it.

Don't declaw your cat. Hunting is part of its nature. Declawing will make hunting a bit more difficult for your cat, but it will not affect the thrill or the inclination to hunt. If your cat was lucky, hunting lessons may have been provided by its mother. Mother cats will train their kittens if they can. But your cat does not need these lessons to be an accomplished hunter; the hunting instinct is very powerful. Those who learn from their mothers are masters, but the rest are extremely effective amateurs.

Hunting is so essential to a its nature that it uses the activities of hunting as play. Have you ever watched your cat playing with a toy mouse? It helps if the toy moves on its own or if you are moving it. The toy is prey and a cat can get bored when the prey stops moving or reacting. You can tell that by what is left behind after an outdoor hunting session. Some of these animals are not eaten, after the cat killed them, it was no longer interested in it.

Continue to give your cat healthy food, and enjoy their hunting skills by playing with your cat, and continue appreciate the gifts that it delivers to you. Don't try to keep the cat from hunting unless you like working against the inevitable. Hunting is just part of being a cat and the exercise keeps your cat in the pink. So what can be done about the hunting instinct? Absolutely nothing, just love and appreciate your cat.

Getting a Kitten? - How to Introduce It to Your Adult Cat

Introducing a new cat into your home is no easy feat, especially when you already have a cat or two (or more!) already living there. I am going to share with you the following strategy that I, and many others, have used to make a new cat or kitten comfortable in their new home.

One of the reasons why it is so hard to integrate new cats into a home is because cats are, in general, very territorial. It is simply in their nature. Many of the common traits of cats are due to territory marking- think about your cat rubbing its head on things, or stretching up and scratching the walls or furniture-these are behaviors designed to leave behind a scent and mark the cat's territory. When you bring a new cat into the home, the older cat feels as if there is an invader in his territory.

The best thing to do, when bringing a new kitten into the home, is to separate the new kitten from the other cats for at least a week, if not longer. You will want to put him behind a solid door, a single bedroom works, or an extra bathroom, find what works for your home. Make sure that this room has all the amenities that the kitten will need-a litter box, food and water bowls, toys, a place to sleep, etc.

During the time spent in isolation, make sure to spend a lot of time showing affection to every cat in the house. This makes sure the older cats don't feel like they are being replaced, and the new kitten doesn't feel like it is being ignored. Try feeding the cats near the door to the isolation room. This will allow them to smell each other through the door, and associate the cat smell with the smell of food-which cats always like!

When you are ready, you can allow the new kitten out of the isolation room. Make sure to keep an eye on all the cats when you do this and be ready to break up any physical altercations. Hissing is fine as long as they do not attack one another.

One simple way to make sure that they get along is to make sure that you have more than enough of the things that the cats may fight over. For example, you should have a litter box for each cat, as well as one extra one. Make sure to have enough food bowls and such as well. Also spread everything out so that one cat can't simply guard the food/litter/toys and not let the kitten at it.

Good luck with your new kitten!

Home Remedies for Getting Rid of Fleas

Fleas are the worst enemy your cat can have. She scratches vigorously, bites her skin, and ingests the fleas that turn into tapeworms and her anxiety soars. Fleas cause vomiting, diarrhea, anemia, loss of fur, and weight loss. Cats are warm-blooded and fleas need heat and humidity to survive.

So they set up housing under your cat's fur sucking her blood and then more fleas multiply. There are literally hundreds of fleas crawling on your cat's skin, biting continuously. Fleas are worse in the humid climates and can survive year around. Home remedies for getting rid of fleas is a safe and healthy approach for your pet, family, lawn and your home. Fleas cause serious problems for your cat if they're not taken care of.

There are several different spot on vials on the market, but they are loaded with pesticides. The pesticides in the vials can cause serious side effects and organ problems. Some brands burn their skin and cause inflammation and infection. Apply Aloe Vera Gel to the effected area and Triple Antibiotic Ointment twice daily until it is healed. Give your cat one half adult dosage of Colloidal Silver in a syringe twice daily for 5-7 days.

You might also notice scratches and scabs on your cat which is caused from all the itching. The Aloe Vera will soothe the effected area and your cat will heal up in no time. There are natural products that are safe for your cat and home such as Cedar Oil. It is available in a spray at Natural Wonder.

Mist your pet with it, then run a flea comb through her to spread it and repeat if necessary. You will also need to free your home of fleas. Vacuum carpet and furniture, sprinkle Borax on the carpet and furniture, grind it in and leave it.

Borax will kill the fleas by dehydrating them. Make sure you cover crevices and cracks. Wash all the bedding and spray cedar oil in the pet's area. To treat the lawn, you will need a stronger dilution of Cedar Oil which is available at your local feed and seed store. Spray your yard, garden and around the perimeters of your house. Keeping the outside treated helps to keep fleas out of your house.

Natural home remedies for getting rid of fleas are the safest way to treat your cat. Her coat will start to look much better and she will feel great.

Cat Clothing? Scarves and Collars Made of Bread? Have We Lost Our Minds?

Why do we put clothing on cats? Is there a new occupation - cat tailor? We have fabric collars and those made of bread for cats. You can purchase cat sweaters, dresses, scarves and coats. Okay, now how did these people manage to get these cats to wear those clothes? Were the cat's claws removed? So now you declaw the cat so that it can use a wardrobe of specially made clothing? We used to declaw cats so that they would make better pets. Or do you think the cat was trained to wear clothes? I am an advocate for training, but training to wear clothes?

There is a theory that humans will try to make animals take on human characteristics. So our pets must wear clothes, and we do their laundry because they are members of the family. If we consider ourselves to be of upper crust our cats must wear clothing that fits their station in life. So of course there must be couture names for the clothing. The market has responded. The names are cute. You can find Meowfits, Feline Fashions, and the most interesting Cat-toure. This last place has cats who are fashionistas and wear rock star clothing. This ready to wear line includes robes, hoodies and tank tops.

Of course our pets have to fully experience the good life. The ideal cat will have a closet full of clothes, eat off of crystal stemware, and sleep in a special bed. There is such an appeal for it that an advertising campaign features a high class white kitty who does just that. The highlight of the commercial is when he eats from a crystal stemware.

I suggest a different course for responsible pet ownership. Cats are noble animals, and the operative word is animal. Whatever happened to letting a cat be a cat? For centuries cats have been our animal companions. The Egyptians were so fond of their cats that they mummified them so that they would continue to be pets in the afterlife. Cats have been deified by man, shared their trials and endured their tribulations. Researchers have decided that the Black Death was a scourge in Europe because cats were annihilated. The cats did not kill the vermin, the vermin had fleas, and the fleas infected the people. People love their cats, and the cats love their owners. Now don't they deserve at least a better fate than being forced to wear clothes and bread? Some may think that the cat looks very cute in these clothes, but I suggest that they take a look at the cat's face and their demeanor. I have yet to see a cat look contented in clothing; they look disgusted, and perhaps just a little bit angry. Let's treat them with respect, let the cat go naked. Mother Nature knows best and fur is the perfect covering.

Reasons For Blood in My Cat's Stool

Our pets are family and we don't like to see them sick or suffering. If they are experiencing symptoms like lethargy from a fever, pain of any type or not eating this is the time for a vet visit to rule out anything serious.

People have written and asked "What could be the possible reasons for blood in my cat's stool? This is what I found:

--Do they have an infection?

--Did they ingest a foreign object that could possibly be making its way through the intestine and causing a puncture wound?

--Did they ingest rat or mouse poison which causes internal bleeding?

--Are they constipated? Do they have hemorrhoids from constipation?

Reasons for blood in my cat's stool were from constipation and only required a change in her diet. I switched to canned food because it does contain moisture and the meat cats crave, which dry food does not. I also bought one of those water fountains which encouraged both of my cat's to drink more water. They are actually intrigued by the fountain. I think they can't figure out where the water is coming from and being such curious creatures they are always amused by it.

My situation with my cat was simple and easily fixed, but the vet said that other reasons for blood in my cat's stool could also have been from colitis or colon inflammation, something more serious or even other straightforward reasons which still need to be checked out. Things like;

--dairy products (cat's don't need dairy)

--cereal additives which cause allergies

--table food that contain spices and causes irritation

--worms or parasites

--bowel diseases

--bacteria from salmonella or E. coli

--stress can also cause irritable bowels

--Urinary stress, bladder infections, kidney infections or disease

The vet gave me excellent reasons for blood in my cat's stool that I would never have thought was possible. So now both of my cats have high quality protein food with no fillers, plenty of fresh water and a quiet place to relax. I also give them a supplement which can help them to maintain a healthy bladder and immune system health. I have noticed this supplement and change in diet has contributed to their shiny coats. They used to have dull and matted fur even though I combed them every day, but I can tell a huge difference in the way they have more energy and just look healthier. And we haven't had to go to the vet which is fine with me (and them also).

How to Get Rid of Fleas Naturally - Natural Flea Remedies for Cats

Most people use harsh chemicals to get rid of fleas in their house, on their cats and in their yard. These chemicals are very toxic and can cause serious illness or even death if not used carefully. These are the same pesticides that are used to spray the crops. You probably aren't aware of the dangers of these pesticides, but there is an alternative solution. Maybe you've been wondering how to get rid of fleas naturally and didn't have any idea where to turn.

There are natural flea remedies for cats to get rid of these nasty creatures that do work. Fleas create a host of problems for your cats. They get tapeworms from grooming themselves and ingesting the fleas which is another problem causing them to get sick. It also causes weight loss, vomiting and anemia. The fleas attach themselves to your cat's skin and suck their blood and then they produce more and more fleas. There are literally hundreds if not thousands of these parasites in your cat's skin. Imagine how you would feel with little bugs crawling on your skin biting you every second. It is extremely miserable for your cat

Use a flea comb to check your cat for fleas. Set him on a white towel or paper towel and if the dropping looks like black pepper, your cat has fleas. Cedar Oil is an all natural product and will kill the fleas. It is harmless to your cat. You may need to use it 2 or 3 times to get rid of all the fleas, but it is well worth it. Make sure you dilute the cedar oil per instructions. Lightly mist your cat all over and comb the cedar oil through with a flea comb to spread it out.

Vacuum your carpet and furniture thoroughly, and then sprinkle Borax (available in the laundry isle of your local grocery store) throughout the carpet and furniture. Cover cracks and crevices and leave it. Grind it in the carpet and furniture with a squeegee or dust mop. Leave it on until the next time you vacuum. Wash all bedding adding Borax to your laundry. Make sure you treat the pet area.

You can also use Diatomaceous Earth which is all natural but do not use it in your house because it is very dusty. It is available at your feed and seed store. If you use this information on how to get rid of fleas naturally, your family, cats, house and lawn will be flea free without chemicals or toxins. Your cats will feel better and live a longer healthier life.

How to Keep the Cat and the House Vermin Free

I have always had a soft spot in my heart for outside cats. Those stray cats who were adopted but still love to wander. Cats who walk on the wild side - at least for a cat. This wildness also means that these outside cats can have fleas and ticks. If you adopt them, you may also be adopting their fleas and ticks. So you are left with two treatment options. You can use natural or unnatural solutions to repel or kill the vermin.

Cat flea treatment is not as well known or publicized as the treatment for dogs. But cats are as prone to these bugs as dogs. Your untreated cat can infest your house as well as untreated dog Flea and tick control must be part of your monthly routine for your cat if you want to maintain a healthy home. Also, if you have a dog, you must make sure that there in no cross infestation. If the dog has fleas, some of them will probably find a new home on your cat. Both animals need to be treated so that you will avoid having to treat the house.

Cats cannot receive the same flea and tick treatment as a dog. The insecticides within the dog collars, for example, can be toxic for the cat. A cat must always receive the treatments that are blended for cats. You will need to do a little research to find the best flea and tick treatment for your cat. The best source is your veterinarian. Your vet knows the condition of your pet, and can help you select the most appropriate treatment. Selecting the wrong treatment may make your cat sick. Of course you can always do a little research on the internet or by talking with other cat owners, you will find that there are so many products available that the number and type are a little confusing. There is a literal smorgasbord of flea and tick treatments on the market. Powders, sprays, and drops are available. Of course you can pick the medium of applying the treatment. You also can select medicines in the form of suspensions or tablets. Your vet will be able to tell you which will work well for your pet and your family. If you have children or other pets is an aspect that needs to be considered when you are selecting the appropriate treatment.

Treatment that you choose must be administered in accordance with the directions. A flea and tick free pet is a happy pet that resides with a happy family.

How to Use Natural Home Remedies for Cats With Ear Mites

Most cats get ear mites at one time or another. Cats with ear mites are miserable with symptoms of head shaking, itching and scratching the ears. Hundreds of these tiny bugs are invading your cat's ear canal living off the wax. A mite's life cycle is three weeks and then they start mating all over again. Ear mites are extremely contagious and spread from one cat to another through direct contact.

Ear mites are the most difficult parasite to get rid of, but by following a specific treatment, your cat will be ear mite free. If not treated, they can cause ear infections, inflamed red swollen ears or even hearing loss to your cat. Some cats have lost their hearing from vigorous head shaking causing a blood vessel to burst.

To check your cat for ear mites, use a cotton swab dipped in mineral or vegetable oil. Fold the ear flap back and wipe the cotton ball in the ear. If there is black debris or a thick coffee grind like substance on the cotton swab, then your cat has ear mites.

Clean the kitty's ears first with vegetable or mineral oil or you can buy a cleaning solution at PetSmart. Clean the ears as directed on the bottle. Always clean the cat's ears first before treating her for ear mites.

There are a few different remedies for cats with ear mites. You can use the conventional method or the holistic approach. The easiest treatment is to visit your veterinarian and get a topical anti-parasitic medication such as Revolution.

It kills fleas as well as ear mites. It is a spot on vial tube that is applied between the shoulder blade and it lasts for one month. Acarexx or Milbermite are two other conventional topical medications you may choose to use. These conventional medications include "pyrethrins" which are an insecticide that penetrates the nervous system of the parasites.

The safest approach is the natural treatment with no chemicals. This is not the easiest way, but is the safest alternative to chemical products. Clean your cat's ears with one tablespoon of Olive Oil and 1 capsule of Vitamin E combined. (Poke the capsule and pour the gel in with the olive oil)

Use an equal amount in a syringe and squirt in the cat's ears and spread it out. Wait for five minutes, massage base of the ear with your thumb and forefinger and then wipe out the mite debris with a cotton swab. Repeat this process daily for seven days.

The Olive Oil smothers the mites and the Vitamin E heals the ears. Another treatment is by using white vinegar and water. Dilute solution to half and half. Use one teaspoon in a dropper or syringe in each ear. Cup your hand around the base of your kitty's ear, and massage the base of her ear with your thumb and forefinger.

Use cotton swabs to wipe out the mite debris. Use this for seven days and then stop for seven days. WARNING: Do not use this method if the ears are red and swollen or have any open wounds.

Garlic and Olive Oil combined are great for treating ear mites. Crush garlic and soak it overnight in warm olive oil. Throw away the clove and warm up the olive oil. Add 5 drops to each ear for 21 days. This remedy also smothers the ear mites.

My favorite is Aloe and Calendula essential oils. They are very soothing to the kitty's ears and have worked wonders for getting rid of the ear mites. Both oils are available at your local health food store. Add several drops to the kitty's ears once daily for 21 days. The oils have a healing effect so if your kitty has inflamed or painful ears, this will help.

These are the best remedies for cats with ear mites and now you can choose the conventional or the holistic approach. Your cat will feel much better and she will love you for it.

Train and Motivate Your Cat With A Can of Tuna

I have a 65 pound English labrador. He smiles at me and licks out his tongue. He lets me know what he's planning when he wants to can catch someone he loves at the perfect moment. You can see the wheels turning. I really saw it during one surprising incident. Nothing is quite as surprising as when a man gets french kissed by a dog. I missed taking a shot of that Kodak moment. Since then, everyone makes sure that there is no leaning down next to this dog.

And that is the difference between a dog and a cat. I have never seen a cat come running for a kiss. In fact, it is a rarity for any of my cats to come running for anything. I once trained a cat to come down some stairs... albeit very slowly, by making sure that he would receive a spoonful of tuna when he arrived.

He was a big grey cat, named Smokey. The name fit him. For the first two weeks in the house, he would vanish into the closet when anyone blew into the room where he was lying. Three months later, you had to step over him to get into the room. There he would sit right in the middle of the doorway. And that is when I knew that I could train him.

The routine was repeated 3 times everyday.

Step 1 - walk into the room.
Step 2 - Go to the refrigerator.
Step 3 - Open the bag of tuna.
Step 4 - Take a plastic spoon, and ladle one large bite.
Step 5 - Close bag and return it to the refrigerator, and close the refrigerator.
Step 6 - Go to the stairwell and call the cat.

For the first week, I had to go to the cat and pass the tuna in front of his face. He would follow me, and I would feed him the tuna at the bottom of the stairs. In the beginning, the cat was extremely suspicious because I did not deliver the tuna to him. He would linger at the top of the stairs, take one step forward and then another back. If I called his name, he responded by sliding along the railing as if he were buttering the wood. Then finally sliding down the side of the stairwell until he took that one last step toward me. After a few weeks, I would call, he would sprint down those steps. I had to make sure that I always had some tuna, and deal with his wish for more. That cat was extremely attentive.

Natural Remedies for Fleas - How to Treat Your Cat Safely and Naturally

If you live in a damp climate, chances are your pet, house and lawn have fleas. Fleas are the toughest parasite to get rid of and it takes a little work. Fleas are worse in the summer months, but they still hang around in the cooler months. Cats and dogs are warm-blooded animals, so fleas live in their skin to eat, breathe and make more fleas. If your pet has fleas, there are hundreds living on his skin.

They suck the pet's blood and more fleas multiply. Your cat or dog is going crazy scratching and biting to get rid of these pesky invaders. There are spot-on vials to kill the fleas, but they are loaded with toxic pesticides that can cause serious long-term illness to your pet. The best solution is to use natural remedies for fleas that are safe and non-toxic.

When cats groom themselves, they ingest the fleas that turn into tapeworms affecting their health even more. Dogs and cats with fleas experience anemia, diarrhea, vomiting, fur loss, dull looking coat, loss of weight and loss of appetite. By using natural remedies for fleas will alleviate these problems.

Cedar Oil kills fleas on your pet, in the house and in the yard. Dilute the cedar oil per instructions and add it to a pump spray bottle. Lightly spray mist your pet, run a flea comb through her to spread it out. You may need to reapply the cedar oil spray two to three times.

The house and yard need to be treated also. Vacuum carpet thoroughly and mop floors with vinegar and borax. Borax kills fleas by dehydrating them. It is available in the laundry isle of your grocery store. Sprinkle and cover carpet and furniture with Borax. Grind in with a squeegee or sponge mop. You can leave it until the next time you vacuum. It is safe and will not harm the kids or pets.

Wash all the bedding including any pet beds and spray cedar in and around the pet area. You can purchase a stronger solution of Cedar Oil at your local feed and seed store to treat the outside of your home. Cover the perimeter of your house, gardens bushes and lawn.

These natural remedies for fleas are 100% safe for your family and pets. You may notice scratches, loss of fur and scabs on your pet. Purchase some Aloe Vera Gel at the health food store and apply it to your pet twice daily until she is healed up. Your pet will feel and look great once she is flea free.

Why Is It Cruel To Declaw A Cat?

The day has come to pick up your new kitten. You're really excited and you've made a list of things to buy for him. You've also added your vet to the list. You are worried about your kitten clawing up your furniture so you've decided to get him declawed at the same time you get him neutered.

You've heard in the media that declawing may not be allowed anymore, so now you're asking yourself, why is it cruel to declaw a cat?

Most veterinarians don't tell you the risks and psychological damage done to a declawed cat. Maybe they just don't realize it, but it's your cat and you must make the best decision for him. When a cat is declawed, not only is his claws completely removed, but all his toes are amputated up to the first joint. All vets know this because they are doing the surgery, but most will not tell their clients about the procedure.

If they tell you otherwise, they are not being truthful with you. It's like us getting our fingers or toes amputated to the first joint. Think about what you do with your fingers and toes. Now ask yourself, why is it cruel to declaw a cat?

The kitty experiences pain after being declawed and some cats even walk on the back of their feet. Nature intended for cats to have claws because they need them for survival, balance and speed. There are things you can do to keep your cat from shredding your furniture. By offering him a scratching post, cat tree or condo, he will go to it.

If he is an older cat, you may need to train him. Just be patient and give him time. Cats tend to go to the ends of the couch or chair to do their scratching and some cats like to scratch on wood. It is expensive buying scratching posts, condos and cat trees, but you can make your own very cheap. Your own is made better than the ones at the pet stores.

You can get most of the materials for free. Go to BestCatTrees and check out all the different designs. It's a step by step E-book with illustrations and it is very easy to read. You can make scratching posts, condos and cat trees.

If you don't want to make your own and can't afford to buy one, you can go to the carpet store. They dump really good carpet in the back of their store. Roll it up and put it in the corner of the wall. Your cat will love it just as much. You can also get the small carpeted floor mats which make ideal scratching posts for the ends of the couch and chair.

Get some cardboard and roll it and place it in between the carpeted mats and wrap a piece of tape around it. My cats have never bothered the tape.....Please let your kitty keep his claws and get him a few scratching posts.

You can clip his nails easily by starting when he is a kitten, that way he is used to it. It takes a little practice, but you will be a pro in no time. Be sure not to trim them to short or he will bleed. If that happens, use a little baby powder. PetSmart carries a product for that purpose.

Declawing your cat is cruel to him and he will pay the price for the rest of his life.

Can Your Cat Make You Crazy?

In the March 2012 Atlantic, there is an article entitled "How Your Cat is Making You Crazy," by Kathleen McAuliffe. Her paper is about one scientist - Jaroslav Flegr, an evolutionary biologist at Charles University in Prague - who believes himself to be a victim of mind-bending, emotion-bending, action-changing parasites in his brain. After years of working on this subject without respect or support, Flegr is finally getting the respect and financial support for his research and the topic itself. This paper is a reporting about the article - mostly facts, little analysis.

"Believing that a single-celled parasite in the protozoan family was subtly manipulating his personality, causing him to behave in strange, often self-destructive ways," Flegr set about to research the problem - knowing he could not be the only person suffering. In his view, this problem could be responsible for deaths, schizophrenia and other psychological and emotional symptoms.

The parasite in question is the same one we have been warned comes from our cats - toxoplasma gondii - the microbe that causes toxoplasmosis. This parasite is excreted in the feces of the cat. In the past, we have been told to stay away from their litter boxes when pregnant; this parasite and babies should not mix it up as the parasite can cause severe brain problems if transferred in-vitro. We now know that even those with lower immune systems can be severely affected. Healthy individuals can experience a bit of nausea, but no severe symptoms.

If humans are infected, it is presumed that the parasite sits dormant in the brain cells. Aack! But here's the rub - this supposedly latent parasite may not be so quietly sitting there. It may be altering the connections between neurons and changing our responses in ways that may allow the parasite to make it back to a cat - the only place it can reproduce. The alteration of our neural connections changes responses in situations that are frightening, changes our preference for certain scents, changes whether we are introverted or extroverted and changes how willingly we trust others.

Several months ago, I watched a PBS show about the extent to which plants work to survive. In sort of a "Nature will find a way" from Jurassic Park, both the plants and this parasite are working to survive. And if they have to take you down to do it, that is how it will have to be.

What caused Flegr to look to for a problem?

• His behavior caused him concern.

• He had no concern when crossing the street in the middle of heavy traffic.

• When cars honked at him, he didn't jump out of the way.

• He made no effort to hide his scorn for the communists - the rulers at the time. Given the politics of the time, he could have been imprisoned for speaking so openly.

• When under gunfire, he was very calm - a distinct contrast to his frightened colleagues.

How it Works:

• Indoor cats do not carry the parasite.

• Outdoor cats eliminate the parasite only during the three weeks of their life when they are young and have just begun to hunt.

• Humans are exposed by contact - by litter boxes, by drinking water contaminated with cat feces, by consuming unwashed vegetables, or by eating raw or undercooked meat.

• The parasite rewires circuits in the parts of the brain dealing with such primal emotions as fear, anxiety and sexual arousal.

• The parasite disconnects the fear circuits in the brain, which might help to explain why infected rats lose their aversion to cat odor.

Theories

• Schizophrenia did not become prevalent until the mid-1700s - roughly the time Europeans began keeping cats as pets. This trend spread quickly in popularity and the incidence of schizophrenia exploded.

• The parasite contributes to many other problems - including car crashes, suicides, and mental disorders such as schizophrenia.

• It is a likely factor in several hundred thousand road deaths each year.

• This parasite infection may be responsible for as many deaths as malaria - at least a million people a year.

• T. gondii may not be the only parasite messing with our thinking. Egad! What a thought.

• The parasite may increase the risk of suicide. "In a 2011 study of 20 European countries, the national suicide rate among women increased in direct proportion to the prevalence of the infection in the population."

• One theory is that it "disrupts mood and the ability to control violent impulses." However, rather than the parasite causing the difficulty, it could be the body's own immune responses to the parasite causing the problem.

• In schizophrenia studies, parts of the cerebral cortex have been shown to be shrinking. Dr. Flegr thinks the parasite may be to blame for that as well. Studies show that people with cerebral cortex shrinkage are also infected with this parasite.

• The parasite may trigger schizophrenia in genetically susceptible people.

Infection Rates:

• French can have an infection rate as high as 55 percent due to their love of really red meat.

• Americans have infection rates at 10 to 20 percent.

• Up to one-third of the world is infected with this parasite.

Studies - Animal

• Infected rodents were much more active in running wheels than uninfected - making them a more-attractive target for cats.

• T.gondii can turn a rat's strong innate aversion to cats into an attraction, thereby luring it into the jaws of its No. 1 predator.

• Infected rats were attracted to cat urine - again a way to get back to the cat.

• Infected rats - although happy and healthy - had benign cysts all over their brain, with many more cysts in the parts of the brain that deals with pleasure, fear and anxiety.

• The parasite produces more dopamine in the brain - a critical signaling molecule involved in fear, pleasure and attention; dopamine is known to be high in people with schizophrenia.

• The parasite makes cat odor smell sexy to male rats.

• Infected male rats suddenly become much more attractive to females.

• 75% of female rats would rather spend time with an infected male.

Studies - Human

• Personality effects are very subtle in infected humans. If a woman was introverted before infection, it might make her a little less introverted.

• Infected humans had significantly delayed reaction times.

• Infected people became less attentive and slowed down a minute or so into the test. This leads to a concern about traffic accidents.

• Mental illness is two to three times more common in people with the parasite.

• There were sex-specific changes in personality

Infected men were more introverted, suspicious, inclined to ignore rules, and oblivious to other people's opinions of them.

Infected women were more outgoing, trusting, image-conscious, and rule-abiding than uninfected women.

Infected men tended to have fewer friends.

Infected women tended to have more friends.

Infected men don't have a normal response to fear; and in situations where danger is a factor they feel all powerful.

Infected men like the smell of cat urine (when compared to other animal urine). Again aiming back to the cat.

Infected women to not like the smell of cat urine.

Infected males might have elevated testosterone levels.

Women shown images of infected men rated them more masculine than images of uninfected men.

Other examples in nature

• The Rabies virus is another example of how nature finds a way to survive. On the verge of killing a dog, bat, or other warm-blooded host, the rabies virus rattles the animal into a rage while at the same time moving from the nervous system to the creature's saliva, thereby making sure that when the host bites, the virus will live on in a new carrier.

• It is common to hear of insects as victims of parasitic mind control - mostly ants, caterpillars, and wasps. When infected by parasites, a lot of them behave weirdly as a result.

• "There is a parasitic wasp that grabs hold of an orb spider and attaches a tiny egg to its belly. A wormlike larva emerges from the egg, and then releases chemicals that prompt the spider to abandon weaving the familiar spiral web and instead spin its silk thread into a special pattern that will hold the cocoon in which the larva matures. The possessed spider even crochets a specific geometric design in the net, camouflaging the cocoon from the wasp's predators." Amazing.

• "A flatworm turns an ant into its slave by invading the ant's nervous system. A drop in temp normally causes ants to head underground, but the infected insect instead climbs to the top of a blade of grass and clamps down on it, becoming easy prey for a grazing sheep. The sheep grazes on the grass and eats the ant; the worm gains entrance into the gut which is exactly where it needs to be in order to complete its circle of life." This story was the first of its kind heard by Flegr.

Positive Potential Medical Research

This research could lead to studies in how to deal with PTSD, anxiety and phobias - by figuring out how the parasite makes a person less fearful.

How can we prevent them?

During the time that your outdoor cat is just learning to hunt, just assume that the parasite is in the cat. Keep everything clean, scrub your vegetables well and drink purified water. Eat meat on the well-done side, or freeze it to kill the parasites.

And just how do we get rid of them?

Currently, there are no traditional medical solutions to an infection of this parasite. We are only now coming to terms with the fact that a solution is needed because of the size and prevalence of the infections. Dr. Hulda Clark has a theory that parasites are the cause of all diseases. After reading this article, it seems clear she was on to something. She created a device to eliminate parasites - called a zapper. She also provides the frequencies to use to eliminate them.

Parasites Toxoplasma (human strain)

0.68, 0.90, 2.50, 5.50, 13.93, 93.50, 386.40, 388.00, 395.00, 422.00

While not FDA approved for this application, this device is available. No claims can be made, but if you know you have the problem - and you can test for the parasite - it might be worth trying. It is much better than a case of schizophrenia.

Are You Training the Cat? Or Is the Cat Training You?

No one can resist the appeal of a kitten. The hardest heart melts and the milk of human kindness flows. Holding a newborn kitten or puppy is a sweet experience. The kitten tugs at your heart, you hold it tenderly, follow it's every move, and provide its every whim. Then all of a sudden, the kitten is a cat, and if you don't watch out you will find that it has trained you well.

Does the cat hound you for food? Do you recognize the particular meow that tells you to come and fill the bowl? Does the cat loudly insist that you have to walk with him directly to the bowl? Do you escort the cat to his bowl and his litter box?

So if you answered yes to either of these questions, the cat has trained you well. And it is now time to turn the tables on the cat. Your training has ended and the cat's training is now beginning. After all you and the cat are sharing your lives and it is best if both of you let your expectations be known. You want to change script so that life with the cat is pleasant. A trained cat is a happy cat with a happy owner. The best way to assure your bliss and a wonderful relationship with your pet is to have a cat that is litter trained and compatible with your personality. You want a trained cat and a perfect companion who is a joy and enhances your life.

A trained cat is house trained. This pet knows where his litter box is located, and goes to it without human companionship. Cats are very independent. A cat that depends upon its owner for companionship to a litter box or a food bowl is not exhibiting appropriate behavior. if the cat is dependent upon an escort you may not be able to leave the cat in the house alone and you do not want your cat to use the house as a litter box. Of course, do not go the extreme with cat training Some owners try to train their cats to use the toilet. Unless you want your pet to look like "drowned rat", it is not recommended that you have the cat trying to balance itself on the toilet seat to do its business. Also, some cats like to drink water from the toilet. They share this characteristic with dogs. However, you can train your cat to perform tricks. Cats enjoy playing with small balls of twine or even "jingle bells". You can use food to train cats to perform tricks. The most important thing is to train your pet and show that you to love your pet.

Here Are a Few Tips to Keep Your Cat Healthy

Your cat is depending upon you to stay healthy. Unfortunately, when a cat gets sick, it does not have an easy time of it. And it is not easy for a cat to recover from being sick. So the best thing to do is for you to do is keep your pet well. These pets are like people, they need to go to the doctor for preventive health visits. A good veterinarian who loves cats can be your best friend to help you meet the goal of keeping your pet healthy.

When should you take your pet to the vet? You should make the first veterinarian appointment within one week of the adoption. If you adopt a shelter cat, the staff will instruct you about the next vet visit. Your cat should be neutered or spayed because it does not need to have kittens. There are too many homeless cats and you do not want to add to the supply. The number of cats available for adoption is considerably larger than the number adopted. It is estimated that only 24 percent of the cats brought to shelters are adopted, the rest are euthanized. The Humane Association estimates that approximately 3.7 million animals were euthanized in the nation's shelters in 2008. Be a responsible cat owner, neutering or spaying your cat will help it maintain its health and ensure that you do not add to the number of homeless animals. If you do not adopt your cat from a shelter, you may be able to obtain these services from an inexpensive spay or neuter clinic. Ask your veterinarian or contact your local humane society, they will be able to direct you to a clinic near you or provide information.

Cats love to wander and if you live in an urban area, it could get lost. Make sure that you get your cat a collar, and put its name, address, telephone and your name on that collar so that you don't lose your pet. 71 percent of cats that enter animal shelters are euthanized because the cat had no identification and the owners could not be notified. Since the estimates indicate that only 2 percent of cats that enter animal shelters are reunited with their owners, your cat needs identification.

Your cat's medical record is an important document. If you move, you want to keep a copy of this record if you need to get a new veterinarian and as your cat gets older this record will be more important. Elderly cats have similar complaints like elderly people. Your cat can develop arthritis, diabetes or other diseases. A veterinarian who knows your cat can help your cat age gracefully.

The Different Colors of the Bengal Cat

Bengal Colors

Bengals come in many different colors. The three basic breed accepted colors are brown, snow, and silver. Fortunately, the Bengal's color genetics are not too complex, and a breeder who knows with certainty their cats' colors, both dominant and recessive, can predict the possible outcome of an upcoming litter. UC Davis has a simple process for genetic color testing, and if a breeder has any doubt regarding color, or wants to be aware of recessive genes, it is best to have a color test done.

Brown Bengals

While there are no official subcategories of the brown Bengal, the brown coat has the widest variety of shades. Think of the color brown on a spectrum with grey at the coolest end and orange at the hottest end. A Bengal's coat can fall anywhere within that spectrum, and as long as it has a black tail tip*, it is considered a brown. Even though we don't officially break down the browns, Bengal breeders have many terms we use to discuss the different colors of brown.

At the coolest end of the color spectrum is the color charcoal. Charcoals have essentially a grey coat with jet black markings. This distinct contrast makes the charcoals attractive cats. Ultimately, Bengal breeders would like all of their cats to have black on their face like the charcoal cats. However, we haven't been able to get the black of a charcoal to directly transfer onto a brown at the warmer end on the brown color spectrum.

After charcoals we have cool browns - cats that aren't exactly charcoal, but are still very cool in coloring. I've work a lot with these shades of cats because I often find their structure to be wilder than the hotter colored cats. While certainly, the skeletal genes and the color genes are not attached, it is interesting to observe how some traits frequently show up together.

Adding more and more warmth to the coat, we will get cats with tawny or yellowish tones. I really like this coloring on cats. It seems as if this color grouping could be influenced by the snow gene as many, but not all, of the cats with this middle brown shade - not too hot, not too cold - carry for the snow gene.

What I deem to be the ideal brown is a step above tawny, but definitely not highly rufused orange. This is the color of many ALCs. I love this color because it provides depth on the finished cat. The struggle is obtaining it with black and white on the coat as well. In my perfect world, that would happen overnight, but it doesn't.

The brown spectrum ends with highly rufused, almost orange cats. These hot colored cats are ideal for many people. The struggle for the breeders is to keep the contrast on the hot cats. Often their pattern becomes less defined with age as the colors blend together. As a personal observation, I have found many of the highly rufused cats to be more domestic in their skeletal structure than their cooler litter mates.

One would think you could take an orange cat, breed it to a charcoal, and end up with the perfect cat - a warm base coat with black spotting. Let me tell you, this has been done time and time again, and the result is not instant. Breeding takes time and patients. Starting at one end of the spectrum and gradually trying to bring together black, white, and a warm brown base coat is a painfully slow process.

* Read the Dilute section for an explanation as to why the browns must have a black tail tip.

Snow Bengals

The snow colors were introduced through domestic cats Siamese and Burmese; however, they were accepted as a registered color, so that breeders could produce a duplicate of the snow leopard. While many breeders can guess a snow color, the most accurate way to determine the color is through genetic color testing.

Seal Lynx
The Seal Lynx color comes from an out cross to Siamese. Lynx kittens are usually born completely white and their pattern emerges with age. While the Lynx can often be thought of as the snow with the least amount of contrast, this is not always the case. The Seal Lynx are the only Bengals with blue eyes. The color on the points of the Bengal (like the Siamese pattern) is considered undesirable in the Bengal Standard.

Seal Mink
The Seal Mink coloring occurs when the kitten has one Seal Lynx gene and one Seal Sepia gene. Think of the mink as the pink petunia - with one red gene and one white gene. Minks are born with a visible pattern. While their eyes are usually an aqua green, they can be gold. Eye color should not be used to determine coat color. Since a Mink must have both the Lynx and the Sepia gene, a brown cat cannot carry for the Mink gene. If you are told that a brown carries for Mink, you are dealing with a person who does not have a clear understanding of snow genetics.

Seal Sepia
The Seal Sepia color comes from and out cross to Burmese. Seal Sepia kittens are born with a visible pattern, and their eyes can range from green to gold. While they were originally thought to have the best contrast, all of the snows, if bred well, can result in good contrast. I prefer Seal Sepias over Mink and Lynx; however, my preference isn't due to the color itself. The Burmese has a smaller, rounder ear which is more desirable in the Bengal standard; whereas, the Siamese, which gave us the Lynx, has a larger, triangular ear. Those structural influences still exist in the breed even though we haven't out crossed to these cats for years.

Silver Bengals

The most recently accepted color in the Bengal Breed is Silver. Silver was introduced to the breed by out crossing to the American Short Hair. Much controversy surrounded the inclusion of silver as an acceptable color as it does not occur in any wild cat species. However, the popularity among breeders and pet buyers ultimately resulted in the inclusion of the silver color. The Silver Bengal has a silver to almost white base coat with black markings. Silvers can have what breeders refer to as tarnish - brown tips on their silver coat. Tarnish is not desirable in the color.

Nonstandard colors

Bengals do come in a few more colors; however, they do not meet the breed standard. There is certainly nothing wrong with these cats; however, they cannot be shown as a standard Bengal.

Melanistic

Melanism occurs naturally in the wild - the South American Panther is simply a melantistic form of the Jaguar; therefore, it occurs in the Bengal breed as well. It is recessive, so both parents must carry the gene to get a melanistic kitten. The kittens are still patterned - hold them up to the light and you can see black on black spots. If bred, all offspring of a Melanistic cat will carry for melanism, but they will only produce melanistic cats when bred to another cat that either is melanistic or carries for melanism.

The Dilutes

Each color gene has a dilute form. One can tell a dilute Bengal as it will have an absence of black. All standard colored Bengals, Browns, Snows, and Silvers should have a black tail tip. If the tail tip is not black, the kitten is a dilute color. Dilute is a recessive gene; therefore, both parents must carry for it in order to get a dilute kitten. If bred, all offspring of a dilute cat will carry for the dilute color, but they will only produce dilute cats when bred to another cat that either is a dilute or carries for a dilute.

The dilute colors

Blue is a dilute of black - the most commonly occurring dilute in Bengals.

Cinnamon and Chocolate are a dilute of brown. While I have seen Cinnamon Bengals, I have not seen or heard of Chocolate Bengals.

Lilac and Fawn are also dilutions of color genes; however, they are much more involved than a simple recessive. I have not heard of Bengals appearing with these dilutions.

How to Use Home Remedies for Cat Flu

Cats get the flu just like people. The medical term is "upper respiratory infection" or URI. It is caused by two feline viruses and will run its course in 7 to 10 days, but it must be treated. The symptoms are sneezing, runny nose and eyes, stuffiness, loss of appetite and lethargy. Home remedies for cat flu will cure your cat in 5 to 7 days.

Keep your cat eating and drinking. If she isn't eating, offer her a stronger smelling canned food such as tuna or sardines. She is probably dehydrated, so you need to get some unflavored Pedialyte for children at your local grocery store. Give it to her straight. If she won't drink water or Pedialyte, add chicken baby food to give it flavor. Do not get baby food with onions in it. Gerber chicken is the best. Last resort is giving it to her with a 3 cc syringe.

Echinacea boosts the immune system. It is available at the health food store. Purchase Sweet Echinacea for Kids alcohol free and give her of the kid's dose twice daily for 5 to 7 days. Vitamin C is antiviral and a wonderful antioxidant. Do not give your cat straight Vitamin C (Ascorbate Acid) as it will irritate her stomach. Purchase Sodium Ascorbate Crystals at your health food store and give her 250 mg once daily for 5 to 7 days. If your cat gets diarrhea, cut back on the dose.

Allium Cepa 30c is a homeopathic for watery nasal discharge causing sneezing. Give your cat 1 pellet twice daily for 5 to 7 days. It is available at your local health food store. Euphrasia officianalis 30c is also homeopathic and helps relieve symptoms of the cat flu. Give 1 pellet twice daily for 5 to 7 days. Some cats have worse nasal congestion and it makes it difficult for them to breathe out of their nose. Pediatric Otrivin has worked really well on my cats. Put one drop in each nostril three times daily for 5 days.

Colloidal Silver kills over 650 different diseases and is an alternative antibiotic. It is available at your health food store. I recommend Wellness by Source Naturals 30PPM. Give your cat 1/3 of the recommended dosage 3 times daily for 5 days and then twice daily for 5 days. You can keep her on a maintenance dose once daily after she gets better. It can also be used in her ears and eyes.

A humidifier is great for easing congestion and will help your cat breathe easier. If you don't have one, put her in the bathroom and turn the shower on hot. WARNING: Do not put her in the shower. It is advised that you stay in the bathroom with her for 15 to 20 minutes. Keep your cat in a warm area without drafts. The cat flu is highly contagious, so if you have multiple cats, keep your sick kitty in a different area.

Your cat should start to feel better in a few days after you use these home remedies for cat flu. I have used them for several years on my own cats and had great results.
