Ive read innova EVO and wellness are good but they are hard to find where i live and ive also read they can be bad for cats with high protein intolerance. Im thinking of buying Avoderm or California natural. are those ok? they currently eat purina cat chow. Also, do i have to feed them a certain amount? Since i have a lot of cats I usually just pour food on the dish and they come eat when they want.
Andera
Unless a cat is in end stage kidney failure, the high protein content of EVO and Wellness isnt a problem. Nature made cats to eat an all-meat, high protein diet. California Naturals a great food, and well liked here. Avoderm I have no personal experience with, but they are all surely significantly better than the corn and by-product filled foods you get at the grocery store, like purina and Iams. You can feed them the same as you do now. When switching to a premium food you can anticipate some loose stool (for some cats) as they get used to the new food. Also expect some shedding, as the old coat is replaced by a new healthy coat. And some cats will resist the better food at first - imagine telling a little kid that they arent getting McDonalds for dinner any more. Most cats though take one bite of the food, and say "wow - real meat" and never look back.

I cant really help you on this as I think you are talking about food which you buy in the USA. However, I wanted to respond the the person who said that IAMS is good because the cats eat less. The reason they do this is because dry food swells in the stomach (drop some in a bowl of water and see what happens). This is definitely not a good sign. There is NO good dry food so, if at all possible, feed a good quality wet food with a small amount of dry (apparently Orijen is good because it is grainless).
Seth
High protein intolerance? Im not a vet but that makes no sense. If youre talking about a cat with kidney problems, then the answer is not low protein, its better protein. Regardless, here are some other good foods in the link. Most if not all include store locators so you can find out if theyre sold in your area. The two brands you mention are ok but perhaps not top of the line.
Hal
Avoderm is good. Feeding them in one big bowl is fine. Here is a link that has a lot of good foods and you can order online. http://search. onlynaturalpet. com/search.…HOPE THIS HELPS:)P. S. iams etc are not good for your cats.

Avoderm or the Natural is a quality food. I like the Natural Balance one too. Im assuming you are feeding dry only. I dont like to free feed adult cats - they tend to get too fat. I have scheduled meals for mine (dry in the morning; canned at night).

Hi Cats need protein to survive. They are carnivores. No cats (and yes I am including crf cats that are not in the final stages) have high protein intolerance Wellness and innova evo are good brands but if you ae talking about dry foods, I would rather feed a lousy wet then any dry food. IAMS is supposed to be great and it seems as though because it is balanced nutrition, the felines actually eat less, saving money.

Does anyone else spend more on cat litter than they do on cat food?
Paulita
Does anyone else spend more on cat litter than they do on cat food? There seems like something is wrong with this theory. Especially when I have to clean the cat litter. Any certain brand you like best?
Arlette
I mean we have 6 cats. We ONLY feed them organic cat food or we mkae our own...we switch off. We would NEVER feed our "babies" that crap in the Grocery stores....and most of the crap in Pet stores. Everyone needs to read "FOOD PETS DIE FOR" its a must if u love yiour kitties. We only use organic or very natural cat litter. Our one male cat Spike has asthma, so we have to make sure his box has NO dust and even those claiming 99% free are really dusty. We like:Feline PineBreeder’s choiceWegener’s Brandof course I think the food last alot longer than the litter. 6 cat boxes...and we clean them everyother day so it can be expensive as well as exhausting....gotta love the kids though
Candace
I feed stray cats a lot, and my mom allowed me to bring a cat insie for one night. The food was $5 cheaper than the litter! The prices are ridicously high!
Geraldo
I do. The preimum clumping litter is so much cleaner and better than the cheap crap. I dont see any reason to waste money on expensive premium cat food. Even my vet thinks its a waste.
Arlette
Well I spend more on cat food. With 13 cats it is a given. I found the best litter at ingles. It is in a big square tub it cost around eight dollars. It is easy to scoop and it keeps down odor. The name of it is Laura Lynn scoopable liter LOL it is good litter.
Darla
I only have one cat and shes a little on the small side so food isnt really that expensive to keep her full and happy. She is a picky eater only eats Purina dry food and doesnt like treats at all. With the cat litter she doesnt like when its dirty at all so i constantly have to change it. I buy the cat litter in bulk i when its on sale i usually buy a couple of the 40lb bags and they usually have coupons on them :) if i cant get the 40 i usually get the 20lb and that lasts me. I spend more money on cat litter than i do cat food.
Racquel
No, I spend about $60 a month on canned foods from Natural Balance, Natures Variety, and Merrick, etc. Since my cats are happy with pine pellets, I buy 40lb bags from the hardware store for about $4. These last about six weeks. For anyone who wants to try this kind of litter, I advise buying a small bag of Feline Pine, mixing it gradually in with whatever litter you currently use, and then if your cat will use it, find yourself a hardware store that sells pine pellets as fuel for wood stoves, because it is much cheaper.
Camellia
Id rather buy organic food and cheap litter than vice versa. Premium foods are not "crap" like someone else said. Research what by-products, meat and bone meal, rendered meats and artificial preservatives can do to your cats. Vets argue against premium foods because they often sell crappy by-product and artificial chemical enhanced formulas at their office and therefore make money off it.
Janna
Not us - we use the wood stove pellets for litter - $5.00 for a 40 lb bag - better price and IMO better litter for us.
Bao
No, but the reason for that is two fold... I feed the "kids" no-grain, by-product free foods (Taste of the Wild, Healthwise and Innova) that are higher priced but much healthier than supermarket brands... AND their litter is very inexpensive ($4.49/40 lb. bag).Im using wood pellets used for wood burning stoves (100% pine; NO cedar, NO additives). I checked with a holistic vet before switching. It took about a month of gradually adding the pellets to their clumping litter to get them used to the change in texture. I just scoop and flush the poop. The pellets absorb the urine, breaking down into sawdust (not fine dust particles like clumping and non-clumping clay litters) which settles to the bottom of the box. You can use your existing litter box and dump when about half of the pellets have broken down, buy a box made for Feline Pine litter, or make your own sifter. About 2-3 times a week, I use a plastic colander (the type used for draining spaghetti) to sift out the sawdust, put the pellets back in the box and add a scoop or two of fresh pellets on top. Its wonderful!! Theres no cat box odor or dust, cleanup is easy, no more time consuming than clumping litter, and theres almost no tracking! Ecologically, its way better than dumping clay litter into landfills and the sawdust can even be composted and used for mulch. If you cant locate cedar-free pellets in your area, look into a similar, cedar-free product thats used for horse bedding. Im not shilling for this brand, its just what I could find locally that was both cedar and additive free:Eco-Flame, manufactured here in Colorado by Confluence Energy:http://www. confluenceenergy. com/
Dan
No. Actually I spend more on food. I spend about $30 on food a month and about $20 on the litter. I have 3 cats and they eat a lot. The cat boxes get dumped out and washed twice a month ( we have 3 of them) and scooped every other day so in between I just add a little fresh litter to the boxes. I prefer scoop away for multiple cats for the big box and then I use the tidy cats non clumping litter for the small ones because those are the ones the kitten prefers.
Cherelle
Nope, I feed my Purina One: Hairball formula. That $21 dollars twice monthly for 5 cats. I like Tidy Cats clumping - the long lasting one.
Lorina
I have 3 cats and 2 extra large litter boxes. I buy new litter (not the scoopable kind) for each box every Friday. If I don’t, the male cat will use the bathroom right outside the litterbox. This is my only warning! Next is the bathroom rug. Don’t forget, a lot of the litter is used by urine. I use the 2nd cheapest clay litter. It works best with my cats. Different cats like different types of litter. Some like the pine litter, or the crystals. Some like scoopable, and some don’t. Use the type of litter that YOUR cat/cats will use. As to the food issue. Remember that the cat’s food is small, and a lot will fit into that little bag. They also shouldn’t be eating like a dog. What goes in, must come out! Most experts say that you should have 1 litter box per cat, but my cats poo in one, and urinate in the other.
Fay
I used to use the regular clay litter and it seemed like I spent twice as much on litter than I did on food. I hated having to lug that heavy bag around and griped constantly about having to pick up litter. I switched to the big box of scoopable stuff, and even though it is more expensive than just a clay bag (nonscoop) it lasts about 4 times as long. I’m not constantly running for litter now and I think the price of food vs litter is about even. My favorite brand is the Tidy Cat multiple cat formula. Its not too grainy, so it doesnt stick to kitty feet and get tracked all over. It seems to do the job of odor control, too.

If tomatoes are so bad for cats then why is fancy feast putting them in their cat food?
Elly
I went to feed my cat his favorite turkey primavera from Fancy Feast. I know there are veggies in it, but some of them look red. And I know red is tomato, which is bad for kitties. So I read the back of the can, and sure enough, tomatoes were listed. Last time I checked, feeding dogs and cats tomatoes was a big no no. So, how can a company that manufactures cat food, put such an ingredient in their product? Any ideas?
Arianna
The reason even cat food brands directed to health-savvy cat owners put vegetables the food is so they can put them not only on the ingredient list but picture them on the label. Intelligent people know (or should know) full well that cats have no need for vegetables at all. However, we always have in the back of our minds that vegetables are healthful foods. It has been driven into our heads since we were toddlers. So even if the response is subconscious we associate vegetables with good health. And very wrongly so in the case of cats. The minuscule amount of tomato that is actually in that food would probably fit on the end of your little finger. So no need to worry. Manufacturers put veggies in cat food for marketing purposes.
Jill
They add items which are really healthy for the cats which evens them out but the nutrients in tomatos are very good for the cats.
Bernice
Problem 1. You are feeding your cat fancy feast. Buy a can of tuna, its about the same price.

Tomatoes are fine for dogs and cats to eat - but not any of the green parts (leaves, stem, stalk). Our dog gets part of the tomatoes we cut up for salads. Our cats eat them too (tiny bites).

"Green Tomatoes, Green (raw Potatoes)These foods are members of the Solanaceae family of plants, which includes the Deadly Nightshade, and contain a bitter, poisonous alkaloid called Glycoalkaloid Solanine, which can cause violent lower gastrointestinal symptoms. The leaves and stems are particularly toxic. (Tomatoes in pet foods are RIPE, and should cause no concern because they appear in relatively SMALL AMOUNTS)" *all caps my emphasis*http://cats. about. com/cs/catfood/a/human…

Tomatoes bad 4 cats? hmm.. had cats my whole life and never heard that.

I am not sure why they do it, but they are not the only ones. I suspect they do it either because its cheap, or because they think we cat folk are too stupid to understand the difference between omnivores and carnivores, or because they are just plain ignorant and care only for making money, not for the catsWhat really bugs me is that the more expensive the food is, the more likely it is to have veggies in it! Its just another way to put in cheap carbs, without using grains, which have become a bad word in pet food. I know Max Cat puts peppers in some of their flavours, and other brands put in other things, like peas, or carrots, potatoes or sweet potatoes,, blueberries, cranberries, even rosemary! etc.. I cant imagine many veggies less digestible than peppers and they are in the same family as tomatoes, the Nightshade family of plants, many of which are poisonous, and includes tobacco too. I suspect peppers are no better than tomatoes for cats. Last time I checked, cats were still obligate carnivores and should not be eating any plants, or any carbs, in their food. I never feed dry - I consider it complete garbage and I avoid foods with veggies in them, because they make one of my cats really sick, but at the moment their fave is Friskies, which has wheat gluten and corn starch in it, along with fake flavours and byproducts. UGH! I dont like it but the cats do. I adopted them awhile back and they were used to dry kibble, so Friskies is a big improvement over that, despite its shortcomings. And according to Dr. Lisa Pierson, who I think has the best site on the net for cats, any canned food is a better bet than dry, for any cat. Eventually I hope to teach my girls to eat homemade food, where I get to decide what goes into it. There will be no veggies in my food, I can tell you that! Tomatoes are bad only if they are green.

They add items which are really healthy for the cats which evens them out but the nutrients in tomatos are very good for the cats.
