The Unsettling Truth About Pet Allergies: A True Story

Hello, my name is Ashes.

I am a male, brown tabby domestic short hair cat. I am extremely handsome and have a very old spirit. My favorite activities are eating and sleeping. I also love being brushed and spending time on my scratching post. I am very affectionate and enjoy being petted and hanging out on laps, but sometimes like my own space too. Here is my family's story.

I was adopted by Carlie and her husband Keith in 2001. Like all passionate lifelong cat lovers, my family treated me like a big baby. Then in 2009, they adopted their precious daughter Grace. We were one big happy family and our new family member and I were adjusting surprisingly wonderful together.

Then the nightmare began. Grace started developing coughing, sneezing, wheezing and a skin rash, which progressed very quickly to a head to toe rash, and she was diagnosed with eczema. They made numerous trips to her pediatrician, saw three dermatologists and an allergy/Asthma doctor trying to get the eczema comfortable and manageable. She was treated daily with oral antihistamines and/or eczema/steroid creams (lotions, ointments, oils, and shampoos), for at least 6 months - with minimal response. So Carlie and Keith decided to have pediatric serum and skin allergy testing done. Grace had positive antibodies to cats. Everyone was devastated. These cat allergies not only cause the typical allergy symptoms Grace was experiencing, but could also cause eczema and in the future trigger Asthma (which she would now be at risk for because of the allergy and the eczema).

Life at this point changed greatly for me. I was confined to the downstairs main living area (only hardwood/vinyl floor), to try to eliminate the spread of dander in the bedrooms and the carpeted areas. My family interactions were limited as much as daily living would allow - this action directly decreased the amount of time that my parents and I could spend together. Incidentally, Carlie has a cat allergy and had already been practicing dander lessening techniques (bathing me regularly with an anti-dander shampoo, using Allerpert and giving me vitamins--as per the veterinarian--daily brushing, etc...) for years.

I was very attached to my family and up until this point had slept with Carlie and Keith every night, in addition to being able to freely roam the house. Now, I was so unhappy, I would cry for hours at night and continuously during the days when my family was home and upstairs. Everyone hoped I would adjust but instead, my stress symptoms got progressively worse. I started not eating, was vomiting and having bloody loose stool. I was miserable. Whatever could be done?

Pet allergies are a very real problem. Some people may only have "minor" reactions such as sneezing while others react as Grace did with rashes and eczema. Regardless of the type(s) of reaction one may suffer from due to pets, the fact remains that it is a very real problem. Sad to say, in a number of situations, the resolution is to put the animal down.

Of course, in situations such as this one, it is not uncommon for the pet to react to any changes in routine, just as Ashes did. From uncharacteristic behavior to extreme physical responses, animals often show their feelings through their actions and the wise pet owner will do whatever it takes to see that both the pet and the people affected are happy and healthy.

Having a pet brings pleasure to life. After all, pets can provide friendship, protection, give you reasons to smile and they show unconditional love and loyalty. However, just wanting to own a pet doesn't mean that every pet is the perfect fit for your family. And in some cases, such as Ashes', having a pet can have very dire results on a family member or the pet. In such situations, difficult decisions have to be made. Next month, we will share the rest of Ashes' story, so be sure to check out Sleep EasZZ to learn how we were able to help Ashes and his family.

What Exactly Does The Warranty On Your Cat Furniture Cover?

So your cat tree came with a warranty, but what does it cover? The dog chewed up one of the scratching posts on your cat tree, is that covered under warranty? Your significant other sat on one of the shelves or perches and it broke into several pieces, can you get that shelf replaced under warranty?

It pays to ask about a warranty before purchasing a product. By asking exactly what a warranty covers before the purchase, your expectations are set accordingly. Most every manufacturer offers a warranty with their cat furniture, however not all warranties are equal.

Some manufacturers warranties are strictly for a defect in the product or the workmanship. Defective product might be, for example, the base of the cat tree is not flat and wobbles when kitty jumps on it! That would be covered under warranty as a defective part and would be replaced and shipped to you at no additional cost. If for example your dog chews up one of the scratching posts, this is not a defect in workmanship or parts, so shame on your doggie, not covered under warranty! Most warranties that are specific to defective product actually end when you accept the product. When you open the box and assemble your cat tree and you see a defective part, it must be reported to store you purchased it from right away to have the part replaced.

In another example, your husband/wife sat on one of the perches and it breaks into several pieces, since cat furniture is not made for humans, there isn't a cat furniture manufacturer in the world that will cover this damage under warranty.

In our last article we talked about Pussicat Premium Cat Furniture and what materials are used in the manufacturing process. Today let's talk a little about the Pussicat warranty. We have already talked about how Pussicat Premium Cat Furniture allows you to build your ideal cat tree by selecting individual components and also offers a wide range of standard trees. If budget is an issue, you can start small and add components at a later time. You can pick your color preference and even select a two tone color combination. Pussicat is made in the USA. Pussicat offers an extra large base for those heavy duty kitties and will build the base of the tree according to the floor type (wood, tile, carpet) that the tree will be placed on.

Pussicat products come with an unconditional 2 year factory direct warranty even on their scratching posts. The single component that your feline friend(s) will ultimately use the most is the scratching post. Pussicat has been manufacturing Cat Trees for three decades and has never had to replace any of their scratching posts! We could not find any other cat tree manufacturer with a warranty that even comes close to Pussicat. An unconditional warranty is exactly what it says "unconditional", it doesn't get any better than that!

Litter Catchers - A Must for Every Cat

Litter catchers are a necessity for every home with a litter box. If you have a cat, then more than likely you have a litter box, unless you have toilet trained your cat. A necessary accessory for your litter box needs is something to catch and trap the litter to prevent it from scattering about the house. Any cat owner knows the unpleasant feeling of stepping on tiny shards of cat litter or having bits of it cling to socks. Not to mention, the continuous need to sweep or vacuum up bits of litter and the embarrassment of having guests notice it strewn across the house.

Selecting From Litter Catchers

Litter mats don't just save the house from being subject to scattered cat litter, it also helps clean kitty's paws. So, now it is just a matter of knowing your options and making a decision. Some kits will include these items. There are kits for litter boxes that often have a scooper and a litter mat included. Sometimes, you can even find a complete cat owner starter kit. Otherwise, the kind of catchers available usually range in size, shape, color and claims to added features or benefits.

Color and Size and Shape

Obviously, these pet accessories come in a wide array of colors. So, that will be either individual choice, you can try to match it to your litter box or you can select one that matches the room you are putting it in. The standards are sort of a dulled slate blue or steel grey, but there are other choices around.

For size, you generally want to make sure it fits the opening of the litter box, which it should if you have a standard sized cat box. Secondly, it will depend on the size of the area you have the litter box in. If you have a large enough space, the choice is unlimited. But, if you are cramming the mat into a small space, or awkward layout, you may have to adapt to that.

Also, the bigger the cat, the bigger the box, the bigger the mat, generally. Shape, can either be personal preference or determined by the needs of the space in the room, again. There is usually square, rectangular or a half circle. So, go with what fits or what you like.

Other Factors

Some mats claim to have the best because of the gripping action that grabs the litter. Other mats claim that theirs is the best because of the soft material that is easy on paws. It doesn't seem likely both can be true together. For some, it is a matter of trial and error. If one does not work, you may have to try another. This can be true of size, too. If you get one but there still seems to be too much loose litter throughout the home, you may have to try a larger mat size. When it comes to litter catchers it is about what is best for you and your cat.

Choosing the Best Food for Your Cat - Quality Over Quantity?

Consumers have had this dilemma on a lot of products when it comes to the talk about quality and quantity. In terms of cat food, what should you go for? Should you go for the food's quality or its quantity? We will try to answer by listing what your cat needs and what it should avoid.

Know what your cat's nutritional needs are. Generally, every cat will need the right amounts of proteins, essential amino acids, vitamins & minerals, and water. So, when trying to figure out whether to go for quality, you can look into the product's components. Determine how much protein and other components it contains. Also take into consideration whether, for example, for every 100 grams of the product, you get more of these essential nutrients when compared with let's say, a 200 gram pack. This is one of your gauges to help you decide. The more that you will get for a smaller amount of the cat food means that you get to provide more nourishment to your pet.

Determine if you need canned or dry food. These two types of cat food are different as each can provide a different experience for your pet. Canned foods provide more water than dry food or kibble can. When you are feeding your cat with kibble, it is important that you keep them well hydrated by providing water containers where they can easily drink water from.

While canned foods have to be placed in a bowl, the dry variety can be served anywhere and everywhere. Also, the amount of food that you can feed your cat when taking into account wet or dry food may differ. Wet foods, as they also contain water can be heavier compared to dry kibble.

This means that cats might tend to take in smaller amounts of wet food. If this is the case with your cat, it is important that you check how of the essential nutritional components have been introduced to your pet. This should be looked at in comparison with the amount of food that it was able to eat.

Look into the price. With all household products' prices going up these days, you also need to be smart when it comes to buying your cat's food. Don't be persuaded by cheap products alone. You also need to consider both its quality and quantity. Find out which brands give you to best available quality with the most amount of the product at the most reasonable price.

Look at the brand. Though this is not your ultimate guide for making a decision, looking at the brand allows you to deduce the possible quality that the product has. Good brands tend to have good track records with what they do. This gives you the assurance that you will be able to buy a good product from them.

Your pet's nutrition is always important. Buying quality products for them is essential. However, if you can find a product that can offer an acceptable level of quality with a reasonable volume or amount of the product, it may be better to decide to go for this one.

Royal Canin Cat Food for Your Overweight Feline

About 1 out of 4 feline pets are overweight, according to a recent report. It seems that the obesity problem isn't plaguing human beings alone, but pets too. And similar to human beings, pets seem to be getting more snacks and treats, than healthy diet and exercise. The consequences are also the same as that of their masters'. Many overweight pets have started to suffer from diabetes, arthritis, heart disease and more.

If your pet is overweight or already obese, you should consult a veterinarian for a weight loss plan. What you can do right away, though, is to start cutting down on giving him treats and make him follow strictly a healthy diet. You should also choose a pet nutrition brand that offers specific diet according to breed, life stage and special requirements like obesity. Royal Canin cat food in online pet stores offers this type of diet. So, even if you're a busy person, you can make sure you won't run out of healthy meals for your feline.

Finding the right quality of edibles for your overweight pet is important. You should not just considerably decrease the amount you feed him, because, in doing so, you will also reduce the amount of proteins, vitamins and minerals your pet will get. This may then lead to other deficiencies.

A formula for an overweight feline should have more protein and less fat. The density of the kibble should also be enough to make your pet eat more, but have less energy intake. It should be produced in such a way that your pet will eat just the right amount of kibble to feel full, so they would not go around and steal or beg food from other pets.

You can find online Royal Canin cat food that is marked "Light." This is the brand's formula with high digestible protein content and moderate liquid content recommended to prevent excess weight gain and to preserve your feline's body line. This even helps trap your pet's salivary calcium for good oral hygiene and slow tartar formation.

Equally important for an overweight feline is exercise. Sadly, some obese pets have to be euthanized since they cannot even take a single step anymore. This is why you should make an effort to keep your pet moving. However, be careful not to overwork your pet in your desire to make him lose weight immediately. You may start by taking him to the park or around the neighborhood to do some walking. Increase the distance that you walk gradually. You may also give him more toys to play with inside the house.

Your feline pet, depending on his breed, may have a greater tendency to become overweight than others. Keeping your pet's weight at a desirable level is best not just for health reasons, but also for aesthetic ones. Your feline pet's body is naturally graceful, so you should help him keep it that way.

Cat Psychology - Understanding How Your Cat Thinks

Cats are not like dogs. If you have a dog, it will be perfectly obvious to you what he is feeling as they have ways of making this very clear. However it can be very difficult to read a cat's mind and know exactly what she is feeling. Cats are by nature solitary and independent creatures, unlike the dog which is a pack animal (as are humans!), so the psychology of the cat remains a mystery to us.

If your cat has suddenly developed a problem behavior, a little understanding of cat psychology could help you to resolve it. Here are a few pointers;

The main thing you should understand is that cats do not develop problem behaviors to spite their owners. If she suddenly starts to attack you, refuses to use her litter tray or shreds your furniture, she is not doing this out of malice so any problem behavior should not be taken personally. There will be an underlying reason for the behavior, and it is up to you to figure this out!

Also, a lot of the cat behaviors we don't like are perfectly natural to your cat, such as scratching her claws. They won't have any comprehension that this is 'bad' behavior so you are highly unlikely to be able to train them out of it. It's a bit like someone telling you that you are no longer allowed to cut or file your nails! You will have to resign yourself to persuading your cat that it is much more preferable to sharpen her claws on that new scratching post instead.

An understanding of cat psychology will help you understand why physical punishment won't work on cats. They do not have the same thought processes humans do. If you catch your cat urinating on your new rug and hit her, she will not associate urinating on the rug with being punished; she will associate the punishment with you. In her mind you have suddenly attacked and physically hurt her for no reason and she will be wary of you in case you do it again. Cats have long memories and will not forget any mistreatment. If you hurt your cat, you will need to work very hard to regain her trust.

A far better way of stopping this type of unwanted behavior would be to make a loud noise when you catch your cat urinating where you don't want her to, such as clapping your hands or firmly shouting 'no!' If she learns that every time she urinates on the rug she gets a fright, she should decide not to do it.

Cats thrive on routines and if there is the smallest break in this routine they can easily succumb to stress. If you have made changes in your house recently, even something as relatively minor in having a change around of your furniture, your cat may be finding it difficult to adjust and this is when problem behavior can develop. Cats also suddenly stop doing something which has been routine for them for years, such as eating a previously preferred food or refusing to use the litter tray. There could be any reason for this; for example she may have been startled by a sudden loud noise when using her tray. You will need to think like your cat to try to identify a solution, such as moving the tray to a safer location and providing plenty of reassurance.

Sometimes you may never get to the bottom of your cat's changes of routine and may just need to adapt to it, for example changing her food to one she will eat.

If you are having real problems with your cat's behavior, it may be worth seeking advice from a trained cat Psychologist.

A Case of Ringworm in Cats

Ringworm is the most common fungal infection in cats. Despite the name, ringworm is caused by a group of fungi known as dermatophytes. 94% of all cases of the fungal infection in felines come from microsporum canis, which is one of three fungi in the dermatophytes group. All breeds of cats may be affected, with the long hair breeds being especially susceptible. However, ringworm more commonly occurs in cats under 12 months of age due to their immature immune systems. Also cats with other immune weakening diseases, and cats under stress, are more susceptible.

The ringworm survives on cats by invading the dead outer layer of the skin, claws and hair. The symptoms of ringworm are comprised of circular patches of hair loss, generally around the head or limbs of the cat. The patches of hair loss may appear gray, and may or may not be red, scaly and itchy. The claw and claw bed of the feline may be dry and flaky. Ringworms can be contracted in an array of situations, and from different funguses inside the dermatophytes group. Mircosporum gypseum is a species of ringworm that is generally acquired through digging in contaminated soil. Microsporum canis, the most common fungal cause of ringworm, is passed on by either direct or indirect contact with an infected person or animal. Microsporum canis can also infect cats through contaminated bedding, grooming tools or from spores in the environment.

Wild animals, such as mice and voles of the rodent family, may carry Trichophyton mentagrophytes and pass this fungus onto cats. This infection is rare and inconsequential, and in most cases easily treatable. However if the infection reaches a settlement of cats, the procedure for eliminating the fungus becomes expensive and difficult, as the treatment must be implemented simultaneously among the group for it to be effective. Ringworm is very contagious and if left untreated is highly irritating for felines.

If you suspect your cat of having ringworm, make an appointment with a vet to confirm that it is ringworm and not another skin infection. The vet may use Wood's lamp which as an ultraviolet lamp under which 50% of ringworm strains glow. Microscopic examinations may take place where by a sample of the cats hair is examined under a microscope to look for fungal spores. A sample of your cats' hair may be taken by the veterinarian and sent to a testing lab. The testing lab will grow the hair on a special culture which allows the exact species of fungus to be determined. If the lesion is not characteristic looking, a biopsy may be performed. Once a ringworm diagnosis has been made both the cat and the environment has to be treated. Lime sulphur dips are the most effective form of treatment for ringworm, which can be performed at home or at the vets. The dips should be used every 4 days for approximately 2 to 4 weeks. It should be noted that the dips cause a slight yellowing of the fur, but is only temporary. If prescribed the antifungal drug Griseofulvin should be taken twice a day and the side effects should be discussed with the vet before use.

Cat Scratching Posts For Your Pet

Cat owners who love their pet cat certainly love their furniture as well. And they don't have to be torn between giving away their worn out furniture or the beloved cat if they will include a cat scratching post in their list of cat supplies. Aside from a cat collar and a cat bed, a post is an important supply that will provide the pet cat a suitable place to scratch.

Every cat should be able to indulge in it's unique nature and urges, including scratching. Cats have the natural tendency to scratch to clean their claws and pet owners can train them to use scratching posts instead of furniture in the house. This will protect their furniture and can be a much less expensive solution than getting a cat declawed (and much less painful for kitty!).

No matter how picky your cat is, the wide variety of materials available means that there is probably a product out there that your cat will love sinking its claws into. There are many kinds of cat scratching posts in the pet supplies store. The ideal ones are made of wood that stand vertically at 24-36 inches or 2-3 feet. They may be covered with upholstery fabric or sisal fiber. A wide base where the post is mounted will allow cats to scratch and stretch upward without turning the post over. If the post is too short or wobbly, they will be turned off because they will not be able to fully extend its body.

You may have to try some different solutions to find one that suits your pet, especially if you have a really picky ot particular cat.A cat scratches in a preferred surface, so a pet owner sometimes need to experiment in which texture is useful to his pet. Some cats prefer rough surfaces like corrugated cardboard or sisal rope. Other cats will scratch in just plain wood.

Scratching posts come in a very wide variety of styles, colors, looks and designs. There are many designs of cat scratching posts in pet stores. There are elaborate posts with several platform levels to allow climbing. "Cat trees" are scratching posts that are very tall and supported by tension rod extending to the ceiling for stability. Some cats need only scratching surfaces like a carpet turned upside down or a piece of doormat made of rough material. The are many that are made to look like decorations, so they sort of blend into the decor of a room. In any case, a pet owner should train a cat to use an acceptable scratching area.

Tips on How to Potty Train Your Cat

Perhaps you've been told about pet cats who use a toilet to ease them selves. Many people wish to know the simplest way on how to potty train a cat, because they are fed up of dealing with and changing the kitty litter box, and lugging home sizeable bags of cat litter. The procedure of cat toilet coaching usually involves 4 weeks to a couple of months.

You have to toilet train the cat with patience. Begin the cat toilet training simply by putting the kitty litter box on side of the commode bowl. Slowly but surely, after a couple of days, when you happen to realize your kitty has adopted the new set up, add papers or even a telephone directory below the container to elevate it several inches. Continue adding levels until the kitty litter box is parallel to the top of potty seat.

Now, move the kitty litter box over to ensure the kitty is sitting right over the commode seat. Make it possible for pet kitty to adjust to this for a couple of days. The next thing in kitty toilet training can be a major one. Now remove the kitty litter box.

Toilet training for kittens and cats is a huge business and several firms offer cat toilet training products or toilet coaching systems over the internet and professionals suggest to apply a cat toilet training kit and even systems to coach your kitty.

If you want to spend less then you could purchase a metal mixing pan or a lightweight metal roasting griddle for the following step. Spot a jar and measure the inside of rim to be sure that your bowl or griddle is large enough to fit the actual commode bowl and reduce the seat. Load it using few inches of scoop able kitty litter. You need to tape it to prevent it from slipping about.

Start reducing the kitten litter inside the jar every week. Go as quickly as ones kitty will be pleased with. Be sure to remove the actual waste immediately to minimize both the odor and the possibility that the kitty tries to cover it.

Here, you need to go down to the teaspoonful of kitty's litter within the container. Start adding some water to the jar. Raise the level every few days. Remember if your cat isn't adapting well, go back and attempt once more much more gradually.

When the water in the pan or griddle is a few inches deep plus ones cat is at convenience with the whole thing, take the jar away, abandoning the uncovered commode. The task of cat training is finished.

The period for Kitty toilet training may differ for every single-family kitten. If your pet kitty is reluctant at any step of coaching, then return a step or two. Please don't get very much worried about it. Simply decelerate and employ the above mentioned guidelines. Most importantly this process requires your patience and focus.

Long-Term Cat Pain Relief

Cats move around too much and most of the time their flexible moves give them muscle pains and you, as the owner, may not really see the signs that your cat is feeling unwell. These feline conditions should be given immediate response but with proper veterinary assistance from your cat doctor. Options for long-term cat pain relief are available in two types. These types may be chemical-based or the other, the traditional usage of herbal cat pain relief medications. However, combination of the chemical-based pain relief and the traditional herbal pain reliever is mostly used as cat owners believe in the immediate effect of these medications.

There are however, warnings that should be taken into consideration especially when cat owners opt to take over-the-counter medicines for pain relief commonly used by humans. These over-the-counter medicines may not be right and suitable for your cat's body systems. Overdose and toxicity in the blood may result as a disadvantage to these over-the-counter pain relievers. It is therefore a wise suggestion that cat owners bring their cats to veterinarian for proper diagnosis and medicine prescription instead of just simply buying any pain reliever from drug stores that may not actually be good for the feline health.

Generally, there are some medications for pain relief that are particularly intended for cats that have similar effect as pain relievers used by humans. Examples of these medications that are commonly used by veterinarians are the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs usually employed after surgery or in treating persistent arthritis pain conditions. If this kind of pain reliever is not effective; a stronger medicine for pain relief is administered such as the steroid medication. Cortisone is an example of this steroid medication that must be used for short-term basis only as stronger drugs need to be taken on a short-term basis.

On the other hand, traditional form of pain reliever may also be sued such as the herbal medicines. Herbal supplements are believed to provide natural remedy and therefore deemed to be non-toxic compared to other pain relievers available over-the-counter. Herbal supplements, however, raise some concerns from the scientific community since there are no laboratory findings that could prove the credibility of the claims of these herbal supplements as safe and effective for cats.

Cat owners hence need to consult their cat's animal doctor before they provide herbal supplements to their cats. Meanwhile, aside from pain relievers prescribed by veterinarians and herbal supplements available, other alternatives in the form of acupuncture and chiropractic care may likewise be utilized to remedy cat's pain. However not all veterinarians may be open to using this kind of treatments. Some vets are not knowledgeable with the use of acupuncture for pain relief treatment as well as chiropractic care. If this is the case, cat owners may just find another veterinarian who is knowledgeable with these alternatives. A holistic and in depth knowledge and experience with acupuncture and chiropractic care must be the qualifying criteria when looking for a veterinarian who will perform these alternatives for the cat.

Tips on Selecting the Best Scratcher for Your Pet Cat

There's something very special about pet cats. They can bring so much joy to a home, although they may cause a lot of trouble sometimes, especially when they mistake your furniture for a scratch post.

Cats scratch instinctively. Thanks to cat scratchers, your cat will finally be able to stay away from your furniture and satisfy its urges at the same time.

Scratching posts are not created equal, so it's best to know how to choose the best scratcher for your cat. To us humans, these posts may all look the same, but to cats, it's a different story. The scratching post is going to be part of your furry friend's daily life. If you want your feline pet to stay happy, buy a post he or she will love.

Tallness

The first thing to look at is the scratcher's height. The post should be long enough for your pet to fully stretch out while it does its thing. Thirty inches should be adequate. If your cat is large and the post you bought is only eight inches long, chances are your four-legged friend will look for another scratching solution, i.e. your couch.

The Material

The scratching surface matters a great deal. Some surface materials are made of wood, while others are made of carpet. Also, there are scratchers that use sisal rope. Cats have different preferences, but many love sisal rope because it's rougher. Moreover, sisal rope is more durable and long-lasting than wood or carpet.

Stableness

The next consideration if you want to know how to choose the best scratcher for your cat is the post's firmness. Why do you suppose cats like scratching couches, sofas and other pieces of furniture? Well, apart from the comfort and satisfaction they get from cushioned furniture pieces, sofas and couches hardly wobble despite a scratching attack. The point of knowing how to choose the best scratcher for your cat is preventing your furniture from being shredded. This is exactly why you're going to need an equally stable and sturdy scratch post.

The Look

While looks don't really matter to cats, you might want to pick out a pleasant look scratch post. For example, if you plan to place the post inside the living room, you might want something that isn't an eye sore. Most cats scratch just about anything that passes for a sturdy scratcher, but let's face it, cat posts can be an eye sore and should be replaced with something decent looking. Choose a color or design that matches your existing dcor or interior home design.

Cheap Cat Food Means Low Quality

The term," you are what you eat ", does not only apply to humans, but also to your cats. If you feed your cat cheap cat foods that are filled with meat by-products and grains, you are essential feeding your pet junk food. If as humans, we were to just eat candy bars and chips on a daily basis, we might survive, but the real question is for how long and how well would we feel? The food that you buy for your cat should provide the vitamins, minerals and nutrients your feline needs to live a vibrant, healthy life, not just survive.

Don't waste your money on oversized cheap bags of cat food. Sales are great, but when it comes to your feline's food you need to focus on what's in the bag and not just the price tag. That's easy to say right? However, the fact is you might save a couple of dollars now by buying cheap food, but most likely will spend a lot more money later on your cat's vet bills. Eating a diet filled with corn, meat by products and grains can result in adverse affects on your cat's health. One of the causes of cat illnesses such as diabetics is excess weight. Grains and fillers simply pack on the pounds on your pet, minus the nutrient. Cats are carnivores; therefore they need real meat as their main source.

Cheap cat food is cheap for a reason; they used grains and fillers, instead of meat, to make their bags of food. Look for cat food with real meat, where the meat is listed as the first 2-3 ingredients. Manufactures of feline food, realize how much pet owners care for their pets welfare, so in an attempt to gain our trust, they start the ingredients off with a protein. however, after the protein then a meat by-products, grain or corn is usually listed. If in the first three ingredients a protein is only listed once, then most likely the majority of the cat food is made up of fillers, such as corn meal, corn and grains.

What is meat by-products? Meat by products is what is left over after all the nutritious parts are taken for human consumption, by products are parts such as the blood, bone, necks, feet, intestines, and feathers. How much nutrients do you think is in a chicken feet, not much. Your cat deserves to eat the most nutritious parts of the animal, not just the left overs. Treat your carnivore cat to nutritious high premium protein rich cat food.

Start an In Demand Cat Enclosure Business

With more and more people keeping their cats indoors these days, the option of having a safe, outdoor enclosure is very appealing. This allows cat owners to keep their cats safe, while still offering the feeling of freedom of being outdoors and enjoying the sights, smells and sounds of the outside world.

While some people opt to build their own enclosures, there are many, many people who simply don't have the skills or the time to DIY. This is where starting a reputable business that designs, builds and installs cat enclosures will meet the needs of many potential customers, and help keep their pets safe and healthy at the same time.

There are as many ways to structure your business, as there are types of enclosures. You can specialise in a particular model, for example, portable lightweight enclosures made from aluminium framing and covered with cat netting. This style would also adapt easily to more permanent fixtures, enclosing verandas, patio areas, and sides of houses.

If you have carpentry skills, you could build attractive timber structures, perhaps matching to the style of the customer's house. If you can weld, steel framed enclosures covered with wire may be your choice.

If you are nervous about starting your own business from scratch, there are a small number of franchises that you can buy, although you will have to buy into the business and most likely pay ongoing royalty or franchise fees, you will also have access to a ready made brand name, possibly larger marketing campaigns, and a ready made set of business processes and policies. This is usually a fast track option for starting your own business, but it does come at a cost.

If you want to avoid franchise fees, but don't have the necessary skills to build cat enclosure, you could choose to outsource the construction work, and cover many styles of cat enclosure, and focus on the marketing and sales side of business.

One way of doing this is to approach existing cat enclosure companies, and ask them if they would be willing to sell you their products at a wholesale price, keeping in mind permission to sell under your own brand name is preferable. Once you have some agreements in place, you can then market your own brand, and when you get orders, simply purchase from your suppliers at the wholesale price, and sell for retail. You can either sell as DIY kits to your customers or up-sell by offering an installation service. Once again, you can provide the installation service yourself if you are a handy person, or outsource and focus on your marketing.

As you can see, there are many different ways to start your own cat enclosure business. This is a business that can be built with minimal overheads, or you can pay an up front premium and buy yourself a cookie cutter business with systems in place.

What Makes Leather Cat Collars Better Than Others

There are different types of cat collars and leashes that you can choose from and among those that are available in the market many pet owners find leather cat collars to be the best. There are different reasons why pet owners choose leather cat collars over those that are made from different materials.

Anything that is made from leather is definitely more durable than products that are made from other synthetic materials. It will be more practical to buy collars that are made from leather because you are guaranteed that it will last longer than other types of collars.

Unlike the other types of collars that are being sold, leather cat collars are available in different styles. There are various types of collars that are specially made for different types of cats. Whether you have small or big cats, you may choose the kind of leather collars that would look good on them. In addition, these collars come in different colors. Leather collars do not only come in natural shades like brown, black and white but also in bright shades like yellow, light green, orange and many others.

There are different kinds of leather collars that you can choose from. Aside from standard leather collars, you can also choose to buy center ring leather collars or D-end leather collars. This type of collar has a safety feature that allows the collar to breakaway if it gets stuck on anything. This type of collar will prevent your cats from being accidentally chocked by their own collar.

Buying cat collars and leashes is easy but choosing the best among all the other types that are being sold can be challenging. Before you purchase things for your cats in websites that sell pet supplies online or in your local pet shop, it is best to consider the quality of the product before anything else.

As compared to other types of collars, leather collars are safer to use. Since leather collars are made from high quality material, these types of collars will not cause skin irritations or allergies.

As a pet owner, you would always want what is best for your pets. Before you decide to buy accessories for your cats in local pet stores or in virtual stores that sell various pet supplies online, consider these tips to make it easier for you to decide on what you want to buy for them.

The Well Behaved Cat

Cats make wonderful pets, just ask any cat owner, especially if they are well behaved. A cat with behavior problems is usually an unhappy cat. As someone who has been owned by a half-dozen of these animals over the years, I am savvy about their care and feeding, their need for companionship, and their need to be left alone at times. More than most animals, cats are creatures of habit. Thus they will notice any lack of attention and act in ways guaranteed to get a response from you.

The most important thing you should ask yourself before you decide to get one is whether or not you have the patience, time and disposition for it. Are you a cat person? Do you want a house or outdoor cat? If you live where your cat can be outdoors during the day that is a different consideration than if you live in an apartment and he runs out every time you open the door. Are you getting the cat because your child wants a one? Your child may be wonderful with the cat, but most kids soon tire of taking care of animals. These are the things you should think about before choosing to get one since these are areas where behavioral problems often begin.

Those who have no familiarity with the cat family believe the old saw that felines are solitary critters who do not need affection or friendship. Quite the contrary, most are affectionate, friendly, and, yes, loyal. Though they may not be lap-sitters, even the most seemingly aloof will often sit quietly near or beside their owners.

One of the most troublesome tasks when living with a cat, is keeping them amused. They are naturally inquisitive, and if kept as house pets, can become destructive out of boredom. To counter this, you must get your cat some toys so he can amuse himself and use up some energy playing and stalking. They love squeaky toys, scratch poles, and small fabric houses with several entrances which are inexpensive. If you can afford a cat condo with several rooms on it, your pet would love one.

If you are lucky and live either in the country or in an area where you can safely let your cat out during the day, Mother Nature will easily take care of their need to use up some energy. They can stalk small critters, run up trees, dig up the ground, and have a great time. Of course, all cats should be brought in before dark so predators, such as coyotes and others, cannot get at them.

Last but not least, one of the most common reasons for your cat to misbehave is because he is feeling stressed. They can be stressed by many things: moving to a new home, for example, is a great stressor for cats; very loud noises; strange odors, dogs, or other animals in the neighborhood; illness; and any mistreatment. Cats love and expect routine.

A well behaved cat is a joy to have around, and paying attention to basics in caring for your pet will go a long way toward keeping him healthy and happy. So often, the obvious is often overlooked.

• Don't overfeed OR underfeed your pet.
• Keep litter box clean.
• Be sure there is always fresh water.
• Make certain the sleeping area is snug and protected.
• Be sure to have a safe, confined spot for your pet if there is thunder or other loud noises.
• Make sure your pet has as much exercise as possible every day.
• Bring your cat to a veterinarian regularly, as health issues often show up first as bad behavior.

I've had lots of experience in taming the tiger in my cats and would like to help you do the same. If this is your first experience with a cat or kitten, it is important that you know something about the pet you just adopted. Are Feral Cats Safe to Keep?

There are so many feral cats in this world that need a home. Many people are afraid of them because they are naturally very leery and can become aggressive if threatened or cornered. And who can blame them? Most of them have never had homes (which is the definition of a feral cat, one who has had no human contact) and not been treated very well by the humans they have come in contact with. I have had many cats over the years. I currently have 26 cats, most of them feral. I am at the point now where I can pet most of them and they crave my attention and touch. I won't say this has been easy. It takes a huge amount of patience to get a feral cat to trust you and accept you. But it is one of the most rewarding things when they do. So, yes, feral cats are safe to keep. It just takes some time and caution at first.

The first question about the cat being safe is does it have diseases you are afraid of contracting? The good news is that many diseases that cats get are not harmful to you. Some, like rabies, are however, so you do have to be cautious. The obvious best solution to this question is if you can trap the feral cat and take it to the vet for a full checkup. This can sometimes be simple if you can get the cat to go into a Havahart type of trap. It's long and narrow and you put food at the very end of it. There is a metal plate that the cat steps on near the food and this closes the door. It's very humane and from there your vet will have his own way of getting the cat out and sedating them to check them out.

However, there are many cats that won't fall for this. They aren't stupid and know somehow this is a trap. If this is the case, you are going to have to be prepared to win the cat over until you can get them to go into a carrier or some other "trap". This is where patience, patience, patience comes in. You feed the cat every day at a certain time (or twice a day) and go away. Don't try to touch them or have any interaction with them for a few weeks. Then you can try standing off at a distance while they eat and watch them out of the corner of your eye. Then try moving a little closer and squat down near them (but not too close). This process needs to move slowly and might take months. Eventually you hope to get to the point where they will let you stand just a foot or two from them. The main thing is to act naturally around them, not like you're waiting to pounce and grab them! As you can see, it can be a long process, but if you have a love for animals like I do, it is well worth the effort.

Back to the safety issue. During this whole process you do have to be careful. You don't want to be bitten before you've had the chance for a vet to give them a good physical and some tests. If the cat is acting in a normal manor (don't count the hissing and growling) and has no obvious signs of injuries, that's a great start. Just watch for anything unusual like drooling excessively or lethargic behavior. Once you get to the point where they let you pet them, still be careful until you can get them to the vet. As a whole, I have had very few of my ferals that were sick and had to be put to sleep. So don't feel that a feral cat is automatically sick or diseased, but use common sense and be careful. When that day comes that they rub up against your leg and want to curl up in your lap, you will feel an enormous sense of accomplishment. You took a helpless, homeless cat that never had a human to care for them, and turned them into a friendly, loving feline.

Short Guide on Adopting a Bengal Cat From a Rescue Center

An affordable way to get a Bengal cat is through rescue organizations. These are non-profit, private organizations that aim to save, rehabilitate, and re-home abused and neglected Bengals. The people behind these rescues are those with passion and respect for the Bengal breed. They see to it that you are an ideal candidate for adopting a Bengal cat from their rescue center.

A Bengal cat is a rare breed but sadly, it still ends up in rescue centers. You can help them have a new home by adopting them and reintegrating them into the real world, beyond steel cages and fences.

Adopting a Bengal cat from a rescue center takes great responsibility because you have to understand that these cats have already gone through tough times. They deserve good homes that will not only feed or shelter them but also stimulate and care for them. Bengals are very sociable so they need to be with you constantly.

If you are already bent on adopting a Bengal from your nearest rescue center, here are the necessary steps that you have to undertake:

Visit your local rescue center for Bengals

You should check out the Bengal rescue center within your area. This is to look at your prospective Bengals and to really see if they are ready to be re-homed. By doing this, you also get a chance to ask questions about the history of the Bengal, especially with regard to the amount of abuse or neglect.

Complete the application

If you have already decided to adopt a Bengal from that particular rescue center, then you should ask for an application form. Some application forms can be conveniently downloaded from the Bengal cat rescue website of your choice. After completing the application, you could just hand it over or send it through their e-mail address.

Background check

The Bengal cat rescue center will perform a background check on you. They will contact your veterinarian for any animals that you may have with you and ask if they are always well taken care of. Other character references that you have indicated in your application will be contacted too, to see if you are a dependable parent for animals.

Phone interview

Then it is your turn to be called by a representative from Bengal cat rescue to get to know you more and to ask what particular Bengal you would like to have.

Visit schedule

If everything goes well, then your next visit to the Bengal cat rescue center will be scheduled so that you may have the chance to see and interact with the Bengal that you have specified.

Payment of adoption fees

When you have decided that the Bengal cat you have interacted with in the rescue center is the perfect one for you, then all you have to do is sign the necessary adoption papers and pay the adoption fee. If you want an adult Bengal, you may have to pay about 100 USD. For younger Bengals or kittens, it may cost you about 300 USD.

Every Cat Needs A Toy Box

Does your cat have a toy box? Do they have a preference to little mice or balls or something that moves on its own? Do they root around in that toy box and select a toy of their choice? Try a variety of toys and see what suits their fancy. A cat can never have too many toys!

My cats love their cat toys. Their toy box is filled with balls, toys that jingle, toys that you wind up and even a remote controlled mouse! Their mouse toys are stored in a small cardboard box so that they can help themselves to the item that they want to play with.

When playing with a little mouse and it disappears under the stove or dishwasher, they will sit in front of the appliance and stare at it wearing the most pitiful look on their little faces. They will stretch their arms out trying to retrieve it until they get so tired, they often fall asleep right where they are!

It is important to rotate their play things to keep them challenged and interested in the things that their toy box holds. Whether it is a cardboard box or a plastic container, the play box should always be available to them to select a play item when they feel like playing. Encouraging your cat to play promotes healthy exercise. Cats often amuse themselves quite easily but playing with your cat is important as well. Playing with your cat not only encourages regular play but helps to create a bond of trust, loyalty and love.

Changing out their toys by rotating the selection that they have to play with will help to keep their interest in rooting around in their toy box for the right toy for the moment. Periodically take some toys from the toy box and store them where the kitties can't see or smell them. Every few weeks take those that have been stored and exchange for some that have been in the active play items. Even though they see the same items at different intervals, they think it's a new toy and play with it with the interest that they had in it when it first arrived. While new things have a new scent and will attract their attention right away. Rotating the older toys works much the same way. Store toys that are catnip scented in a zip lock bag to keep the catnip smell fresh and inviting.

If you want your feline friend healthy and happy, don't let them turn into couch potatoes. Cats that don't get enough exercise often are overweight, cute but not healthy. Cat naps are necessary and play time is equally important.

It is great exercise for them and great laugh therapy for you. Watching them play with toys is more entertaining than going to a hit movie. My cats love their cat toys and yours will too. Keep plenty of toys on hand to give them exercise and keep them healthy.

Cat Hair Air Purifier - 4 Filters That Will Make Your Purifier Effective

Cat hair is a fact of life if your cat lets you live with him or her. The additional hair can range from unsightly to unhealthy. There's nothing like having cat hair rain down when the heat or air conditioning comes on in the middle of dinner for guests.

But the health issue that literally attaches to cat hair is even more of a problem. Cat dander (small dead skin flakes) is a powerful allergen that can trigger asthma and allergies and is almost always attached to hair.

Being able to remove both hair and dander is important. Check the technical specifications of the unit you are considering making sure it has following 4 filters. Only then can your cleaner be effective at solving your problem.

One of the most important features in any cleaner is multiple filtrations. This means that each set of filters is designed to remove particles of different sizes based on the openings in the filter.

The benefit to you is that instead of having one filter catch everything, fill up quickly, and need replacing every 6 months, you have multiple filters that are geared to specifically remove only certain size particles.

This means each filter lasts longer, and the overall benefit is that you are not spending money to replace filters. And you are not losing filtration time due to frequent maintenance. Multiple filtration is both cost effective and efficient.

Large Particle Pre-Filter---This is the first line of defense against the particles you can see such as cat hair. But the benefit is that it can remove particulates that are not necessarily a result of your feline friend. It is designed to remove dust and hair from both you and your pet.

Medium Particle Pre-Filter---This is the second line of defense designed to remove mold and mildew spores, and seasonal pollens that find their way indoors.

HEPA-This term is a common one in the air purification industry and is formed by using the first letters of the following 4 words---high efficiency particle arresting. By definition this type of filter must be able to remove 99,997 out of every 10,000 airborne particles that are.3 microns in size or greater. This includes dander, bacteria, and viruses.

Carbon Cloth---Originally designed by the British Military to combat chemical warfare, this type of filter is excellent at removing gases, odors, and airborne chemicals, and because it is a cloth, it gives an added layer of particle elimination.

Checking to make sure your cleaner contains all of these filters will save you time, money, and enjoy. And you'll be surprised at how much more enjoyable life with your cat can be without so much hair in the air.

A Little Extra Tenderness For Your Senior Cat

Everyone and everything ages, even our precious cats. They no longer play as much as they use to, they don't jump and roll on their cat trees. I've been told, that a cat can be in this stage between 8-12 years.

Our pets become a member of our family and we don't want to see them become older and slow down. But, I believe that there are somethings that may help slow down that process. Like us, keeping ourselves healthy by eating the right foods and getting our exercise, it will keep our bodies and minds healthier and slow down our aging.

By making healthy meal choices, seeing to your feline's needs for medications and supplements, you will have your cat with you, longer. I have a cat tree for my cat and he loves it. He doesn't even realize how much exercise, he is getting. I recently found out, there are other names that cat trees can be referred to as:

Cat towers

House

Furniture

Condos

Bungalow

Jungle Gym

Another new toy I purchased for my pet, recently, is a stroller. It has a cover, pockets for treats, toy's and it folds-up nicely. If you knew me, I would be one of the last people you would have thought would invest in a stroller for my pet. Well, I did.

When I started reading up on them, I realized they are also great for older pets, especially the ones that are not able to get around as much as they use to. A great way to get you and your cat out of the house and for a walk. He will still be able to enjoy all the scenery and get some fresh air.

Your feline may interact with a kitten, making him feel young again. I know of several friends that got a new puppy when their dog was getting older and slowing down, it really seemed to make him more active.

In no way, am I trying to say I am an expert in the field of caring for older feline's. I just thought I would share some of the tactics I am using for my older pet, because they seem to be working for him.

I have always been a believer that the best medicine you can give to anyone is lots of love, this includes our precious pets, because they are a big part of our family.

Buy Modern Cat Furniture for Your Beloved Pets

If you have a cat, you'd know by now that cats can be pretty compulsive when it comes to scratching your furniture or other items in your house and sharpening their claws. Felines have a tendency to scratch their 'favorite' items repeatedly, and just like dogs, they too need their own toys to play with. It must be known that cats don't often scratch furniture just to be destructive or difficult; rather, it's their way of communicating and 'marking' their territory. Cats are very territorial, just like dogs, and most pet felines also graze their claws against furniture while they are stretching, playing, greeting their owners, or are angry.

Since we obviously cannot change the behavior of a cat (and we shouldn't seek to do so either), it would be a good thing to buy some modern cat furniture for your beloved pet's well-being. Such furniture can be found in brick and mortar, as well as online stores that offer both contemporary and traditional designs and ideas.

By their very nature, most pet cats prefer 'enclosed' spaces, so if you are looking to include modern cat furniture in your home, a modern cat house or a mini kitty condo makes for a great choice. The materials used are scratch resistant, which is a given for any cat toys or furniture. If your pet feline is young, you can go the extra mile and purchase, design, or hire someone to make a cat tree or playhouse for your pet. Your cat will love perching on its own little hideout and playing with its toys there without you having to worry about your furniture getting damaged.

If you are up for designing a personal space for your cat, you'll need a bit of inspiration and creativity. There are plenty of modern cat furniture sites from which you can get some ideas and tricks for building your own cat furniture.

Cats can be pretty selective, so if you're looking to purchase some furniture for your pet and are finding it hard to decide on a modern, sleek design or a traditional, retro one, just let your cat do all the choosing! If your feline takes to a particular space, it will let you know. Just make sure your pick is functional, with the ability to last for many years to come.

When it comes to the materials for a modern cat house or furniture, you can take your pick from scratch resistant wicker, fabric, and leather accessories that will complement the dcor of your home.

Proper Flea Removal For Cats

Proper flea removal for cats should consider not just the removal of fleas, but also prevent them recurring.

Fleas seem to be a problem in furry animals. They cause itching of the host and the residue of fleas can be left wherever the cat goes, creating problems inside the house. Some veterinarians claim that cats are allergic to fleas, but this is unlikely in a healthy cat.

There are a few veterinary flea removal products, and whilst they are generally effective, they are highly toxic. One cat shook herself after an application, and the drops landed on a painted door. In minutes the paint started peeling off. Other people have noticed a decline in health after these preparation are used. This is unsurprising, as typical ingredients include nerve gas.

So what can you do safely to remove fleas from cats?

First, let's examine some natural ways, ones which are effective and won't cause any harm.

Adding a little fresh garlic to your cat's food is a healthy way to prevent any pests.(Please note, garlic is perfectly safe to feed to cats, despite some claims to the contrary.)

Adding a little apple cider vinegar to their water, about one teaspoon to half a litre/one pint of water.

Adding a little brewers yeast (must be brewers) either to the food or combed into the fur.

Using the herbs pennyroyal (but use caution as this can cause miscarriage), tansy or fleabane on the bedding and in areas where they are causing a problem.

The aromatherapy oils cedarwood, eucalyptus, lemon, rosemary, terebinth, lavender and mint are all helpful when diluted and combed into the coat.

However, if you can establish why your cat has fleas in the first place and rectify that, this will save you and your cat much anxiety as well as hard cash.

Cats in the wild may have the odd flea, but they will never have the infestations so common in untreated domestic cats. This points to the cause.

Diet plays a large role in determining the pH (acid/alkalinity) of the skin. When this is wrong, fleas take up residence. When this is right, they find the environment unwelcoming. By feeding your cat according to the diet she evolved on (more or less, according to ease and availability for you, the feeder), you can ensure her skin pH remains healthy and so keep fleas away.

Think outside the square when searching for proper flea removal for your cat. Don't just think of treatment. Think of cause too. In the long run it makes your life a whole lot easier.

What Is a Real Cost of Owning a Bengal Cat?

One very important aspect to consider in buying a Bengal cat is its actual cost. Well, if you want to have a Bengal in your home, you should very well know that it is a rare breed. With rarity comes the high price, so you should expect that a Bengal cat could cost from 500 USD to about 5,000 USD, depending on what Bengal quality you prefer.

As you know, there are three main types of Bengals-pet quality, breeder quality, and show quality. Pet quality Bengals cost 500-1,000 USD while a breeder or show quality Bengal could cost from 1,500-5,000 USD (show Bengals may be more expensive depending on the breeder).

Aside from the actual purchase of the Bengal, you should also take note of the basic expenses in keeping or maintaining it. Here are some considerations so that you may have an idea of how much a Bengal could cost:

Micro-chipping

Micro-chipping is very important for the identification of your Bengal. It really makes a difference especially if you lose your cat by chance. Embedding a microchip into your cat can cost you 50 USD.

Sterilization (spaying/neutering)

On the other hand, sterilization of your Bengal cat can cost you basically 100 USD if you want it done n your healthy kitten. Sterilizing your Bengal can cost up to 200 USD if your cat has complications.

Food

The price of the breeder cat food changes from time to time, depending on the price of raw materials. You should keep yourself updated with the price variations in your local grocery store.

Medical care

Vet care and vaccines should be considered as well. Work with your veterinarian for the payment methods that you can avail of (health insurance). This may also include possible emergency care, hospitalization, supplements, and other medications. This is a very important factor in determining how much a Bengal can cost. Vaccinations cost 50-70 USD, while flea and de-worming medications cost 20 USD.

Insurance

Insuring your Bengal cat could really help you from the total medical cost to getting you reunited with your Bengal (if ever you lost it). Including this in your Bengal budget is a must. Bengal cat insurance can cost 30 USD monthly.

Grooming and training equipment

You should have these to make sure that your Bengal keeps clean and learns proper behavior, especially in the toilet. Having a clean and well-trained Bengal can cost a lot but it will definitely be worth it. Grooming and training your Bengal cat can cost 20 USD.

The amount of money needed in acquiring a Bengal cat also depends on where you are going to get your Bengal. If you decide to get your cat from a reputable breeder, you should be preparing a bigger amount. However, if you are going to get your Bengal cat from a rescue center, it will only cost you much less because you will be adopting the cat. Nevertheless, you should still consider the expenses in keeping your Bengal cat.

Cat Health Problems and Remedies

For all of us cat lovers out there, we all worry about our cats. We should and trying to find good information is sometimes an issue. I know of some common cat health problems and would like to share with you some of them and some remedies for them. This is for cat lovers that would like to find out about hairballs, fleas, constipation, diarrhea and worms.

Hairballs in cats is a normal thing if they get them once and awhile. If your cat has quite a bit of hairballs then maybe it could be from them shedding too much. Do you find them having lots of hairballs in the spring, the shedding season? If so there is an easy remedy for this from just combing them. Now if you find that combing doesn't help then ask yourself do you have other cats or does your cat hang around other cats? If so your cat could be grooming the other cats and getting hairballs from them. Then of course there is other problems such as diets, or digestion problems.

Now to fleas, you don't need to worry if your cat has a few but I would still recommend treating your cat. If you do not treat your cat it could let your cat become infested with them. If your cat does get infested with fleas, it is best to treat them as quickly as possible. In not treating a flea infestation you could let your cat become dehydrated from the fleas feeding off your cat. Treating your cat is simple with flea treatments, and to help prevent fleas you can get a flea collar.

Constipation is not nice to go through and sometime can be painful, as so with our cats. Even simple hairballs can let our cats be constipated, so remember to comb them regularly. If you are helping your cat from having less or no hairballs then perhaps you changed their diet? There are simple remedies for constipation that you can get. If you see bloody stool however then please take you cat to a vet immediately.

Now diarrhea is not a pleasant thing to think about, but if it last longer than 24 hours, you can help ease it. Diarrhea is a safety mechanism, if your cat ingest something it doesn't like, then it passes through the stomach with little water/liquid absorption which in turn becomes diarrhea. That is why I suggest to give it 24 hours as that is usually the time it takes to let it pass as long as it doesn't intake any more of what it doesn't like.

Worms in cats, there is four types I have found out to be fairly common for cats, roundworm, hookworm, tapeworm and heartworms. What I found out to be somewhat disturbing is that some of these worms, us the owners can get. So treating them is what we would like to get done right away. Not only us but our other pets like dogs can also get them. There are some great dewormers out there to help you get them treated. But it is sometimes best to take your cat to the vet as you may need them to be surgically removed.

These are some of the common cat health problems I found and as a cat lover would like to share with other cat lovers. The nice thing about this website is that they also would like for us to help each other and give them our own personal cat health problems we have come across, and if we know them, the remedies. I hope that all the cat lovers out there will help and give them other good topics on this to allow us all to have a good informative meeting place.

Thank You.
And happy cats to all!

What Is The Best Cat Bed for My Cat?

Devoted cat owners would give anything that their pet needs. And this includes cat beds. For those who are clueless with regards to cat beds, what to have, which to buy, here is a guideline that you can use in order to land with the best one:

Comfort. This will be your top priority. Your cat should be able to sleep on it and be well rested. Comfort can depend on the size of the bed. It should be one that allows for your cat to stretch and adjust its position. The softness or hardness of the bed will also come into play.

Material. This refers to the fabric that mostly comprises the bed. You can choose from natural or synthetic fibers. Natural can be in the form of cotton and a few more varieties. These are more commonly chosen as they have shown to have triggered fewer allergies. If you choose to go with synthetic fibers, at least settle for ones that are hypoallergenic.

Positioning. The place where you are going to set the bed will determine the type of bed you are going to purchase. This also pertains to the amount of space available. So, if you want a big bed for your cat, make sure that there still is space for that bed. Otherwise, you should just settle for a smaller bed but one that will be enough for your pet.

Style. Most cat beds are made with walls and an entrance on one side. This can be the perfect style as you can provide an easy entrance for the cat but you also have the walls to keep it from falling out of its bed. The color, although your cat won't really mind, can be dependent on the room by which you are placing the cat. A color that complements that room would be ideal.

Maintenance. There are beds that can be easily washed while there are also those that seem almost impossible to wash. This category can be because of the type of material or of the style of the bed. The amount of time that it takes for the fabric to dry is also to be taken into account. Those that readily dry might be better than those that are too thick and take time to dry completely.

Cover. Some beds are designed with their covers detachable making them easy to wash and replace. However, there are those that are sown on the whole bed and can be impossible to wash or to change. So, if you want less work, make sure that the bed that you will choose will have detachable covers.

Water resistant. It will be helpful if you have a bed that does not absorb water or urine. These types of beds can be ideally used during travel.

Durability. As with any product, this characteristic is very important. Your cat might play on their beds. They might even bite at it. Therefore, beds that are sturdily made will be better in surviving such assaults. Also look into the brand guarantees that the product comes with.

The first is whether or not you will go for a covered litter box. What good can be had from a hooded one? For one thing, covered ones can imply a neater home for you, as the litter will be contained in that box. You don't have to worry about stepping on scattered litters on the floor. The covered boxes can also help to prevent the cats from urinating over the edge and therefore keep the odor from stinky puddle low. However, the downside to litter boxes with covers is that it can be a little claustrophobic for certain cats, who may not appreciate the closing in of their needed space when they enter it.

To get the best cat litter box, another consideration that needs to be made is whether you go for the automatic litter box or the simple or manual one. If you are a busy person with so many things to do, then we highly recommend the automatic litter box as this contains a self-cleaning mechanism that will allow it to automatically clean up after your cat for you. You will not need to manually scoop up the litter as you go along. However, this can prove to be a pricier investment, so prepare to shell out more for this self-cleaning option.

Finally, consider the hidden litter box as the best one for your cat if you want to give your feline a good deal of privacy. Fortunately, these cat boxes come in all shapes, forms, sizes and styles so that you can have the freedom to choose which one will work best for your home decor and your working area. It's a fantastic option if you think the conventional ones are such an eyesore that you have to hide them away.

By taking in all of these considerations, you will be able to make an well-informed decision on getting the best cat litter box. Last but not least, it is useful to check out some of the users' reviews and learn from their straight talk! You should be able to find one that fits your budget and needs after going through some of the reviews.

Guide to Buying a Heated Cat Bed

If you have pets at home, you need to make sure that they are warm enough on their beds. And for this reason, it is wise if you can purchase a heated bed.

Before you go out and look for that heated cat bed, you first need to know that there are few types of them. They also come in numerous designs. So, aside from considering the amount of heat that it gives off, it is also necessary for you to take into account the bed's design and built.

Then, you can plan the type of bed you want to have. Determine where you can place the bed and you can work from there. The bed should be able to conveniently fit in the area. There should also be enough space around it for your cat to get on it easily.

Also take note of how big your cat is as you will be deciding on the size of the bed based on your cat. The bed should be of just the right size but big enough to allow for your pet to comfortably stretch.

At this point in time, it may be necessary for you to think what color or color scheme will be good in order to complement the room. Design may also come into play especially if the room is based on a certain theme.

There are two places where you can possibly find a heated bed. One would be on the internet and the other on an actual store that you need to visit. There are a few advantages and disadvantages for each one. On an online store, the biggest benefit is on the convenience of purchasing while lounging on your sofa. You don't have to sweat it out on the streets just to find one that you prefer.

However, if you are in a mood to walk around a little, purchasing on a store might be better because of some points. You can be able to see how the product really looks like. As on online stores you only see pictures, there is a possibility that the item does not look exactly like how they are on those photos.

Visiting stores will also allow you to try them out and see if they are working properly. But of course, although you will not be able to try the products on an online store, you can at least purchase from those who accept returns and replacements.

For the types for heated beds, there can be those which are basically just made of fabrics which are put together to form some kind of a mat where your cat can sleep on. This mat is made from special fabrics that are warmer than the regular ones. Also, there are those which come with blankets. These warm your cat adequately even during the winter months.

The type of bed to have can be based on the amount of heat that you want your cat to have. Mats may be enough for some, but for very cold places, the use of beds with the heated blankets may be necessary.

Cat Antibiotics and What You Need To Know Before Using Them

A cat's immune system is a multi-faceted defense network that has evolved to protect them against invading microorganisms and susceptible pathogens. Like humans, they also experience occasional infections. Usually this problem is preventable, but when it happens a proper regimen of cat antibiotics will help ensure their speedy recovery.

Feline infections can be caused by a bacterial invasion of the normally sterile host tissues. Its diagnosis is based mainly on sypmtomatology and the presentation of some odd moods. If a cat shows signs of fever, changes in bowel and urinary patterns, inflammation, or behavioral changes they may be experiencing infection. The infection can be a result of a superficial wound or an internal problem like UTI. Either way, cats need to take antibiotics for cats to prevent infection from developing into a serious complication.

Those who have cats that are exhibiting these symptoms need to consult a veterinarian to determine the causative agent of the infection. Once determined, the veterinarian will prescribe the antibiotic suitable for the cat's condition. There are many types of antibiotics for cats such as Penicillin, Aminogylcoside, Cephalosporin, Erythromycin and Tetracycline. Each of these antibiotic groups work differently on different pathogens. Penicillin works by penetrating through the bacteria's wall and attacking it. Erythromycin, on the other hand, hinders the bacteria from creating their walls, thereby causing them to die. Aminoglycosides and Tetracyclines work by disrupting the bacteria's protein synthesis. Lacking protein renders their strain incapable of reproducing.

Antibiotics for cats also come in different forms. There are tablet, liquid, suspension and injectable forms. Most of the time, the veterinarian will ask the cat owners which method they prefer. However, there are certain antibiotics that need to be given as injection. Whichever method they use it is important that the whole antibiotic regimen be completed.

While antibiotics prove to be effective in eradicating bacteria, they can also affect the normal cell functions of the cat. This disruption will then present itself as side effects. Since each group of antibiotics works differently they also produce varying side effects; although allergies are common to all of these groups. Cephalosphorin can result in diarrhea and gastrointestinal disturbance. Prolonged use of Aminoglycoside can lead to hearing problems and severe kidney diseases while Tetracycline and Erythromycin can cause an abrupt loss of hair and visual problems.

It is also probable that the cat will have a poor immune system while on antibiotic therapy. Furthermore, incomplete antibiotic therapy can lead mutation of the pathogens into a more potent infectious agent. When this happens, the cat needs to have an increase of antibiotic intake or take a combination of different antibiotic therapies. There are many antibiotic combinations and they work effectively on resistant strains of bacteria. An example of which is the Clavamox - a combination of amoxicillin and clavulanate. This drug works by attacking the bacteria and suppressing it from multiplying further, however, combination antibiotics can cause serious of side effects. Therefore, it is important that cat owners comply with the medication regimen to prevent their cats from developing antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria. Another problem concerning antibiotic-resistant strains is that they can easily infect other pets and even humans. This is a serious concern that needs to be prevented.

Indeed, antibiotics are great remedies that can help cats recover from illnesses or infections but their improper use also prove to be fatal. Cat owners need to be very attentive with their cat's needs to make sure that no harm comes to them. Proper care and concern for our beloved cats will surely prevent infections from occurring.

Cat Flea Treatments - Ways To Get Rid of Cat Fleas

Using cat flea treatments can be the difference between life and death for your pet. Believe it or not, while in most instances fleas are little more than a nuisance, they can actually lead to very serious health issues as well. The problem is, many cat owners do not even realize their cat has fleas until they spot a chunk of fur missing.

It is easier to see fleas on cats with lighter fur, as fleas are extremely difficult to see due to their tiny size. If your cat has darker fur, you will probably have to use a magnifying glass.

What happens if you do nothing to treat them? Well, even if nothing happens to the cat, you still have to worry about the fleas getting inside the house and laying eggs. However, in many instances the cat can get something known as anemia. This is a potentially deadly disease.

While your cat is not likely to die from fleas, why take the chance? Either way, it is important to act on it. Here are three things you must do to eliminate the flea threat now:

1. Educate yourself

There are many different treatments out there. Most of the commercial ones use harsh chemicals to kill the fleas. For this reason, a lot of them produce severe side effects. Some of the products used have even been known to result in death in rare instances. For this reason, it is important to find out what the possible side effects are before risking using it on your pet.

Also, remember that there are plenty of good natural treatments as well. These holistic treatments are quite good at getting rid of fleas without causing any negative effects.

The problem is, some of these solutions are actually dangerous to use. A few of them are actually known to produce harmful side effects, but the best ones eliminate the fleas without causing any damage. A couple natural solutions you should consider are the flea comb and borate powder. The best method is to read reviews online of any product you are considering and see what customers are saying about it. This will let you know of any issues that others have experienced.

However, make sure the product is made specifically for your animal. There are different treatments for different sized cats, and there is no one size fits all solution that works. Also, absolutely never use a dog flea treatment on a cat, because dogs and cats are not made to handle the same ingredients.

2. Follow directions

When applying the solution, make absolutely sure you follow the guidelines exactly. If you deviate even a little, it can cause serious issues.

3. Use the treatment throughout the house

That is correct-if your cat has fleas, and they spend time in the house, then areas of your home are infected. Therefore, getting rid of them is essential. Otherwise, they will lay eggs and spread throughout the home. For this reason, use the treatment everywhere the cat has been.

The bottom line is that cat flea treatments are a dime a dozen today. The important thing is that you take your time, read reviews of anything you are considering, and follow the directions exactly. This is how to get rid of fleas and prevent harming your pet.

Teacup Persian Kittens - Setting the Record Straight

You may be asking...What is a Teacup Persian Kitten??

Different breeders of Persian Teacup cats and kittens have different descriptive terms to indicate the smaller lines they work within their cattery.

In an attempt to educate you about these pint size pixie Persians I have dedicated this page to clarify exactly what Tea Cup Persian cats are and why they have obtained the "teacup" terminology over the years.

First, let me clarify.... "Teacup Persians" is a descriptive term, not a size category. So please, do not buy into false advertisements or unrealistic size expectations of what the kitty will look like full grown.

Many Persian breeders will use the word "teacup" as a marketing ploy to land a sale when in reality the ONLY color category that has truly earned the "Teacup Title" is the silver and golden Persian family.

I found this out the hard way years back when I bought myself a Blue Eyed White "Teacup Persian". He grew to a whopping 15 lbs and had to be placed in a pet home because he was far too large to breed to any of my cats. I myself have been breeding White Persians for over 20 years I should have known better but got caught up in the idea he would be tiny, as the breeder stated.

If someone is claiming to have white Teacup Persians, Himalayan Teacups or bi-color teacups you can bank on the fact they are not a trustworthy place to send your money.

So remember....teacups Persians must display SILVER OR GOLDEN on their body to be classified as a teacup Persian.

Just to be crystal clear, I am not saying that a silver with white or golden with white are not small they key is silver or golden MUST be visually present on the cat to classify as a "Teacup Cat".

FACT: There is NO SUCH THING as a teacup Himalayan!!!

While no breeder can guarantee the adult size of any color you can rest assured if you are purchasing a silver or gold you are within the smallest overall body structures a cat can carry.

I find that golden Persians are usually smaller than silvers not by much but some.

Regular size Persians and Himalayans are usually quite large, cobby and muscular.

Regular sized female Persians or Himalayans balance out around 7-9 lbs.

Regular sized male Persians or Himalayans balance out around 8-12 lbs.

The Silver and golden Persians are just naturally smaller cats but in no way are they grouped or categorized into a "breed or size category" simply known as the smallest and most petite of the Persian feline family.

Silver and golden Persians usually produce females APPROXIMATELY 4-6 lbs and males APPROXIMATELY 6-7 lbs.

This is not an exact size chart but merely a guideline to keep in the forefront of your mind when considering a "Teacup Persian".

The overall bone structure of the Silver and Golden Persian is usually more diminutive than your regular sized Persians or Himalayans...not to say that you cannot get an occasional small framed Persian or Himalayan from other color categories from time to time it's just the silver and golden's are more known for continuously producing these small framed Persians.

The Teacup Persians are every bit as healthy, loveable and inelegant as the regular sized Persians they just have a smaller build.

The Tea Cup Persians (at least the ones produced here at our cattery ) are purebred and not in any way crossed with another breed to achieve their naturally small cobby body shape/size.

Teacup Persians are usually higher in price, not so much because they are smaller in size but because their coat colors are that of the more expensive designer categories.

The Silver and golden Persians have long since been known for and referred to as the "Royals Royce" of the Persian world therefore you should be expecting more elaborate price tags when shopping for a teacup Persian kitten.

Teacup Persians have a fairly small color selection to choose from: Shaded Silver, Silver Chinchilla, Shaded Golden Chinchilla, Blue Silver Chinchilla.

ULTRA RARE Designer Tea Cup Colors: Blue Chinchilla Golden, Silver & White, Golden & White and Blue Chinchilla & White, Red Shell Cameo, Cream Shell Cameo.

Please Note: Because Silvers & Goldens (Teacups) are smaller and more delicate they should NEVER be allowed to leave the breeder's home until they are at least 12 weeks of age!!

All ethical cat breeders enforce this adoption age limit on all teacup Persian kittens.

FYI - ALL Silvers and Goldens are born VERY dark then lighten with age. They will have achieved their true coat and eye color by the time they are 2 years old. I do hope I have clarified the "Teacup Persian Cats " and their naturally smaller sizes on this page.

"Start with honesty to build trust"....that is our philosophy.

So please keep in mind if you are looking for a smaller kitty, you will most likely want a silver or golden Persian. However, it is important to remember....they are NOT "miniature cats" they are simply known for being the most petite and small framed.
