How do i get my cat to eat wet cat food instead of dry cat food?

Octavio

I have heard that dry cat food is bad for your cats health. My cat loves dry cat food and only eats a small amount of the wet cat food. I used to give her dry food in the mornings but now I have started to give her wet cat food as that would be the time when she is the most hungry. This morning she woke me up meowing becuase she was hungry and I fed her one of those small tins of cat food and she only ate half. An hour later she still didnt finish it. I gave her a small pile of dry cat food and she ran straight over and ate it. I dont think it is enough food for her to be eating only one small tin of cat food a day (half in the morning, half at night). She is already small and although her weight is okay, she really doesnt need to be any thinner.

Alfred

Good for you! Youre doing the right thing. I went through this myself, and it took me two weeks. First, be prepared to waste a bit of money. And to be patient. Buy several different brands of food, and get different varieties of each. Offer a bit of that, and if your cat responds to any, make note of the brand and flavor. It may be that hell like venison or turkey, or perhaps hell like any flavor from a certain manufacturer. You are right to switch gradually. I think you could continue what youre doing - offer the dry food once per day - give him 1/2 to 3/4 of what he would usually get. You could even break that into two meals although I dont think that really matters. By reducing the amount of food, your cat still is getting food but will also still be hungry. And hunger can be a great inducer to try new things! You could also try mixing some dry in with the canned. Basically, youre doing the right thing. Just be patient and try other foods too. EDIT: Whoever told you this was on the mark! Dont worry about the uninformed opinions out here. And dry food doesnt clean their teeth; you dont have to worry about that myth either.

Argelia

Mix it up!

Arcelia

Get gravy or somthing else

Angelina

Try slowly adding the wet into the dry more and more each day tell the cat gets use to the wet cat food

Angeline

Great answer!

Shanae

Cats are meat eaters. Wet meaty food is better for them. Dry food can cause intestinal and constipation and kidney problems. Slowly start adding canned food to the dry food and introduce it to him gradually.

Giselle

Cats really only need the wet food if they arent drinking a lot of water. My cats get as much dry as they want and they get a can of wet every other day.

Sean

Who ever told you dry catfood was bad for your cats health is wrong. Even the vets who sell "special" cat and dog food sell the dry stuff. Dry cat food helps to keep the teeth clean, helps with fiber in diet, has all the essential vitimans and minerals. As long as your cat is healthy it can eat dry foor. There are also special types of dry food, for older cats, for kittens, for cats who need to lose weight. I have had cats for over 40 years and have always used dry food.

Cassaundra

Dont know who told you that, but dry food is better. My 17 year old cat has eaten dry food all his life. He is very healthy and never had a tooth problem. Or you could just go with both...Take care;

How do cats and dogs know which is cat food and which is dog food?

Numbers

I have 2 cats and three dogs. One night, I ran out of cat food (the dry type) and my cats were hungry. So since I had dog food only and the shops were closed, I gave them dog kibbles. Theyre more or less of the same shape and size and are made of the same ingredients - chicken. My cats took a nibble and refused the rest of the bowl, preferring to go hungry than eat dog food. The next day, i got them a fresh pack of made-for-cats kibbles and they immediately dived in and ate up. How come my cats knew what I gave them wasnt cat food? I also know of dogs that wont eat cat food for the long run (not mine though, cos theyre pigs and will eat anything). It would be good if a pet food manufacturer can answer this question. Is there some special ingredient you put in cat and dog food that makes cats and dogs know which kibbles is whos? Also, nowadays, dogs are eating fish too - like salmon. You cant say its the ingredient. How come they know the difference?

Dot

They know, especially dogs. If you leave the cat food bowl on the floor the dog will go after it before it goes for the dog food. Cat food is higher quality ingredients than dog food, and dogs know this because after they try cat food they think it tastes better. Cats usually wont eat the dog food if it is on the floor because of the same reasons. They know the cat food tastes better as well. Here is a solution to keep the dog from eating the cats food. Put the cat food bowl up on the counter top where the dog cant reach it. Only the cat can jump up there, and the cat wont go near the dogs food bowl on the floor.

Erick

Cats should NOT eat dog food. Read the label. Garlic is good for dogs. Garlic and onions are toxic to cats and in larger amounts, poisonous. Many vet pages and cat pages reference thishttp://www. cat-world. com. au/CommonProductsPoisonousToCats. htm

Lorilee

I meant to say Read the Label of your dog food, most contain garlic, or garlic powder. I had asked my vet the same thing once because we have a cat who does like (a certain brand) dog food, so we had to find a brand she didnt like

Lucia

DONOT EVER LET YOUR DOGS EAT CATFOOD AND YOUR CATS EAT DOG FOOD. It is really bad. i dont know why, but i had the same problem... my cat ate my dogs food, and my dog ate my cats food. the vet said its harmful.

Paige

Cat food has a lot more vitamins and minerals and cats can can tell the difference from the taste and the smell! if your dog i eating youree cats food you should stop it immediately because a dogs body can not take all of the vitamins and in long term it can cause kidney failure!

Emely

I think that cat food has a different smell than dog food.

Ivana

Cat food has a lot more meat in it. The more meat in the food, the more they like it. My cats like dogfood because its forbidden fruit and I only buy pure natural brands which are made from real meat.

Jackie

Cat food is very fatty dog food is very lean dogs love to eat the cat food cuz it is so fatty

Latosha

Lol. one time i went into the kitchen and found my cat eating my dogs food. he had plenty of his own, i guess he just choosed to eat my dogs. he doesnt do it any more. he just did it once.

Calandra

The cats and dog food has somewhat different taste and nutrition, dog food not only had chicken flavor but some Natural flavors that dogs eat not cats. plus different smell

Iraida

If you are a cat lover or just like cats.... Visit catheaven1247.webs. com.... Even if you dont like cats go on you will seem to like it afterwards!

Remedios

Tl;dnr

Owen

Well they dont cats just dont really like the taste of dog food but dogs ;like the taste of cat food lol

Etta

I disagree. A week ago when I first got Clarince, she ate from the dogs bowl. She seems to like it and has no problem with it. If they like it, they must know its good for them. Unless, anyone here is a cat than I am entitled to my answer:)

Hipolito

The formulation of pet foods requires that cat foods have different combinations of ingredients. This may cause a different smell and taste to the food. also cats have an inability to produce tartarine, which requires that pet food manufactures provide an amount of this in there diet. this is not hte same for dogs, if you ask your vet they will advise you not to feed your cat dog food, due to this fact. discuss this further with your vet at your next appointment.

Lorinda

They dont is the simple answer. Ive fed my cat dog food and although she wasnt too keen on it, she ate it. I think its to do with the density and bulk of the meat. If I mash the dog food for her she eats it. The dog just eats!!!

Ashlee

They are made with other ingerdents then just chicken. The cats can smell the difference

Marylee

Even small dog kibbles are different than the ones made for cats - not just the ingredients (which is really important), but the texture and the smell too. My dog will eat the cat food, my cats wont touch the dog food. Actually, I dont mind the catts not eating dog food, becasue they need differnt nutrition. There is stuff in cat food that they have to have, and I think it makes the cat food too rich for dogs.

Dian

Stupid dogs will eat the cats food! a cat would never eat dog food.

Jesenia

They smell their food and walk to the other one food and smellit. and walk back to theirs

Augustus

They ask their friends.

People have told me that wet cat

Monte

People have told me that wet cat food is best for cats, but when ever we tried it on him he got sick what could cause this??? by sick I mean lots of through up also if it matters hes half purebred himilain and half purebred nowigeian forset cat.

Bunny

Did you switch him onto the new food slowly? You have to switch your Pets food slowly over a period of 10 to 14 days, if you can. Mixing 25% new to 75% old. Then 50/50… then 75% new to 25% old. And finally switch over to 100% new. Take it slow as not to upset their digestive system. Let me share with you what I have learned about feline nutrition to help you make an informed decision on what diet you should feed your cat. Many brands of manufactured cat foods claiming to be "healthy" really are not. In fact they are made of the lowest ingredients possible. Im not saying that a cat cant live off them... just the same as you could live off hot dogs and Mac and cheese forever, but better choices can and should be made for your feline friends. I would not venture to say that any manufactured food is "best" for a cat but a grain free organic wet food would be a good start. Feeding canned is certainly better than feeding dry in all cases. Cats were never meant to eat dry food, also known as cereals or kibble. We, humans, make them eat it for convenience to us. It has nothing to do with them or their nutritional needs. Its completely species inappropriate. All small domestic cats descended from desert cats. In the wild, desert cats derive their entire liquid intake from their prey. They do not have a thirst mechanism because they dont need it when eating a species appropriate diet. They get all they need from what they eat. Additionally water was usually not available to them in their desert climate. So they do not often drink water. Regular ol house cats have descended from those same wild desert cats. So in a home environment, your kitty does not get the moisture it needs from dry food and it’s almost always in a constant state of dehydration. Water fountains are encouraged to TRY to get your cat to drink more and your kitty may even enjoy it, but it will never meet its water intake needs drinking from a bowl. Deadly feline illnesses such as diabetes, kidney failure, obesity, allergies, Irritable Bowel Disease (IBD), bladder stones, kidney stones, urinary tract blockages and Urinary Tract Infections (FLUTD), with and without deadly crystals run rampant these days. Cats are not taking in enough water to stave them off. Proper water intake through a species appropriate diet alone can prevent most of these conditions. Overall, wet is all around better for any cats diet, be it canned or Raw and they should never be fed dry cereal kibble if we wish to most closely match their wild nutritional and dietary needs. Kibble meets our needs… not our cats. It is also bogus that kibble cleans teeth. DRY FOOD DOES NOT CLEAN TEETH. Its an old myth that has been scientifically disproved for years, but old-school vets drilled it into peoples heads for so long (and sadly still do) that people still believe it. Cats can not “chew”. They do not have flat “chewing” teeth. Their molars are not for grinding food. They have meat ripping pointy carnivorous teeth. You may see them “crunch” a piece of food once to crack and break it… but they are absolutely unable to chew a hard piece of food. Want your cat to have clean teeth? Give them an appropriately sized raw bone to chew on. :o)I personally feed a Raw Meat and Bones based diet to my cats and they are very healthy on it. I HIGHLY recommend it. Once I got the hang of it and felt comfortable with it its a snap to prepare. Its something you might want to consider someday. Cats are obligate carnivores after all and must derive ALL their nutrients from meat based sources. They are unable to absorb them from any other source. Despite thousands of years of domestication they remain strictly carnivorous. True and honest meat eaters and that is what they need most. Protein from meat! If you are interested in feeding a raw diet some great places to start learning are http://www. catinfo. org/ , http://www. catnutrition. org/ , and http://www. felinefuture. com/nutrition/ .If you would like to try raw with your cats and don’t want to get all technical about it but want to try a trusted, time tested and balanced raw diet you can order from http://www. felinespride. com/products/cat… . I purchased this myself when I first started and my cats loved it! Another premade Raw you can try is Natures Varity. I personally have never used this but know many people that do and it’s pretty easy to find http://www. naturesvariety. com/content. la…If raw is not an option for you please be aware that there are three Categories of manufactured Pet Foods: -"Grocery store" foods – (Generic Brands and cheap name brands) Those foods found in grocery stores and mass-market retailers are made with lower-quality, less-digestible, inexpensive ingredients and are therefore a cheaper alternative. While easy on the pocketbook, "grocery store" foods normally do not provide your cat with the healthiest, most nutrient-dense ingredients.-Premium foods – (Iams/Eukanuba, Purina One, Hills Science Diet, Nutro and such) Foods often found in grocery stores, pet stores, and veterinarian offices that contain higher-grade ingredients, but still include many elements of "grocery store" food, such as artificial colors, artificial flavors, chemical preservatives, and "filler" ingredients such as corn and wheat products, by-products and even animal digest. Yuck! Premium foods are usually more expensive than "grocery store" foods because their ingredients are sometimes of a higher quality, and are therefore somewhat more beneficial and digestible. But don’t be fooled, some of those same so called Premium brands are sometimes worse than grocery store foods, but they charge prices like they are better. They aren’t! - Healthy foods – (Wellness, Merrick, Eagle Pack, Drs Foster Smith) The newest addition to the pet food market - provide pets with the highest quality, healthiest, and most nutritious ingredients. They are typically available for purchase online or direct from the manufacturer. Some better retailers are starting to carry them now. Complete Petmart carries a few healthy brand foods. Foods in the Healthy class contain nutrient-rich ingredients. Formulated to provide optimum health benefits for pets, these foods often use real meat as the primary protein source, carbohydrate-rich whole grains like brown rice and barley and whole, fresh fruits and vegetables. They should not contain artificial preservatives, flavors, or colors. They will almost always be fortified with additional vitamins and minerals, and will use the best natural sources for fatty acids to help build healthy skin and a beautiful coat. Because healthy foods use high quality ingredients, you should expect to pay a little more than you would for other types of pet food. Remember, though, with healthy foods you can feed less since healthy foods are more nutrient-dense than other types of food so it often evens out or cost’s les than feeding foods filled with cheap non-nutritional by-products fillers. With all that information in mind, when you are choosing a new cat food, study the ingredients. All ingredients on pet food labels are listed by weight. Meaning whatever ingredients are listed first on the list, there is more in there. The first ingredients listed should be whole meat ingredients, protein sources, such as Chicken or Turkey. NOT just the word “meat”! Who the heck knows what that is? The word Chicken Meal is ok, but it should be a secondary ingredient, not first. Meal is the meat dehydrated and ground into a powder. The ingredients also should NOT include any by-products or animal digest whatsoever. Those are disgusting left over animal parts that are scraped off the filthy floors of meat and poultry plants. They should just go into the trash but they put them into pet food instead. EW!!!! Also make sure there are no artificial colors or flavors. And make sure there is no BHA and BHT used preservatives. These preservatives have been shown to cause cancer in both cats and dogs. Bad Bad stuff and it’s in almost every cat treat on the market. :(So, in summery of the ingredients… if you see the words by-products, Animal Digest, the word “meat” alone, Corn, Corn Gluten, Wheat Gluten, or BHA or BHT… stop reading, put down that product and move on to the next. Be aware that when switching to a Healthy, Holistic or Organic food, you will pay for what you get. Good foods are not cheap. They are pricey and will cost you more than cheaper products, just like steak costs more than hotdogs. But again, you will be feeding a better food and improving the over all health of your pet. This in turn leads to less vet visits for illness now and more importantly later in life in their geriatric years. You will also feed less of this food on a per animal basis because a smaller amount of food contains what your cat needs. Overall healthy wet foods are well worth it, if only for the piece of mind that the ingredients are better for your cat than cheap crap. You can start your research for a healthy cat food here if you are not ready to try feeding a Raw diet: http://www. onlynaturalpet. comIf you want to buy in a store, Complete Petmart is a good store and carries quite a few natural, organic, and holistic blends. Also check with your local feed/grain stores. I highly recommend you take the time to research for yourself, but the information I have given should get you off to a good start. Good luck choosing a healthy food!

Eliza

What kind of food were you feeding him? You want a good quality with real ingredients and not a lot of fillers. I know that if I feed my cats something beef based they will throw it up. I asked about this the other day and was given an awesome sitewww. littlebigcat. com/Browse the article library

Ashlyn

I have never had a problem with a cat vomiting from wet food. I have used the Natures Logic, Natures Organics, Wellness, Avoderm, Natural Balance. I also make my own cat food with raw meat, made from chicken and turkey. So it surprises me that your cat is reacting that way. I would be less surprised if you were using some of the less desirable foods such as Fancy Feast, Science Diet, etc.

Andrew

Hi Yes wet food is much better for cats then dry for yourf cats The sickness can be from eating to fast so maybe try some smaller meals throughout the day. You can also go ot a heajth food sore and get some acidoupholous to sprinkle over the food. It is (shedding) hairball season right now. If that is what it is, you can get vetbasis Go to vetbasis. com

Belinda

Cat food is like God nibblets. He does ALL for you and your pussycat. :D :D :D

Alden

If wet cat food doesnt work than use dry! we use meow mix because are cats love it and its reasonably priced.

How can i stop my dog from eating cat food?

Carmel

I just moved in so there is no good high surface for me to put the cat food up on where the dog cant reach. Any suggestions? Does anyone know if cat food is harmful to dogs? fyi my dog is a chihuahua (4 lbs)

Aldo

I have a baby gate seperating my dog from the "Cat room" where their bowls and cat litter is placed. The dog can not jump over the gate but the cats can Eating cat food probably wont hurt your dog, though its best that he doesnt eat it all the time. Cats and dogs require different diets. Cats are pure carnivores, meaning they typically eat nothing but meat, while dogs are omnivorous, meaning that they eat some plant materials along with their meat. Cat diets are made primarily of meat and meat products, so in the long run they can be too rich for dogs and can cause digestive problems. They are also denser in calories than dog diets, so they can lead to obesity in dogs. Because of the additional fat and calories, cat food often tastes better to dogs than dog food does, so you may have to keep an eye on your dog to make sure he doesnt indulge in the kitty kibbles. By the way, while cat food is generally okay for dogs, dog diets lack essential nutrients that cats need to stay healthy, so cats cant live on dog food. Overall, its safest to feed your pets the kind of food formulated to be healthiest for their specific species.

Jon

Dont leave food down all the time. Feed them in separate rooms.

Laveta

Cat food will cause your dog to become obese, and subsequently can cause pancreatitis and diabetes.

Georgia

Thats just nonsense - your cat can jump up high to get her food and your chi sure cant. Just put the food up somewhere.

Tatum

Its not harmful to him, but it is not nutritionally balanced for him. It is also more expensive than dog food and will only end up making you pay more to get a fat dog. I put my cats food up on a cat tower so the dogs cannot reach it. While they do catch a stray piece that the cats drop down from time to time, it has worked well, even with puppies.

Gustavo

Put the cat food in a room that the dog cant get into

Kacy

Many with dogs and cats both feed cats on a certian counter or dresser. You can also place the cat food in the bathtub, your chi shouldnt be able to get over the edge.

Florene

No-cat food is NOT harmful to dogs. just put the cat food in a barrel, thats what i did. (in its bag!)

Tommye

Put the cat food up on a box or anything high enough to keep the dog out of it. Or for now feed the cat 2-3 x daily and dont LET your dog go near it and then pick it up after 20 minutes. Get between the cat food and the dog and walk into the dog and make the dog back up. Make sure the dog knows YOU dont allow it to eat the cat food. Cat food is VERY bad for dogs. The smaller the dog the quicker it can cause harm. Feed small dogs 2-3x daily also. Im sure you can find a counter or a dresser...you can get a rubber place mat to put under the cats bowl. I got one at a pet store that has a small edge to keep the food on the mat.

Lenard

You mean, seriously, you cant figure this out on your own?

Ardis

You shouldn`t be allowing your animals to self feed ANYHOW! So this should be real easy! When you feed your cat, lock your dog in another room until the cat is finished.

Delmy

Dogs will eat anything so just give him something else or walk it for like 30mins get it tired cool it down and it will feel hungry feed it dog food

Emelda

We keep our cat food on top of the toilet. We have 3 dogs and they cant get to it.

Why are cats and cat food so much cheaper than dog stuff?

Arlette

All cat food and purchasing cats are so cheap compared to dogs. why? arent both as precious?

Isela

I think its all just a matter of which brands you are looking at. I have a friend who keeps a really large dog who buys them by those huge bags. I think they are 20lbs. I have two ragdolls cats and I can safely assure you Im spending more than him just on catfood alone. Ive seen catfood on the shelves at the supermarkets that are extremely cheap as well but they are really not recommended for your pets. (I shall not list names here)..

Alberta

Because there is more crap in them

Karolyn

All animals are very precious. Cats eat a lot less than dogs so easier to keep cost down, but it depends on the brands of food you are using, too. A big dog can eat a lot so cost is more just in that regards. Anyway, just know they are all worth every penny spent.

What are the benefits of dry cat food vs wet cat food?

Orval

I have always fed her dry cat food...she seems to like it fine. I always wondered if I should mix it up...and give her some wet food too. I had a cat when I was a kid and we never gave her wet food...and she was just fine. Any advice?

Claretta

I heard from the lady in the PAWS shelter that moist food helps with keeping their urinary tract infection down. Since then mine gets a can a week split into 4 portions.

Belkis

A lot of people dont give their cats canned food and they are fine. My cat always has dry available plus he gets some canned food twice a day. Why? Because he likes the canned food.

Chanel

My cat loves wet cat food compared to dry. I give it to him about every other day or so just as a treat.

Lucile

I have always given my cat both. All dry is well...all dry. Not very tasty or close to their meaty food theyd get in the outdoors if they hunted. I buy natural, healthy types of cat food, they put a lot of garbage in pet foods these days so read labels. I get Natures Choice which is not expensive either.

Deloras

Canned cat food seems fresher, than dry

Saul

Dry cat food helps your cat not get tartar build up on her teeth. Wet food is yummier to her though. I give mine mostly dry, with Saturday morning wet food treats and they LOVE me even still ;)

Huey

My sister always gave her cat a mix because the dry was good for her teeth, and the wet was easier to digest.

Vanessa

I give my cats wet food every now and then as just a I love you snack but its like once or week or sometimes once a month even. They do not need it at all unless you feel there is a weight issue by means of the cat is to thin and needs a little more coaxing to eat more. Cats can become dependent on it quickly and will even cry for it. That gets annoying believe me! So if you do not have a weight issue continue what you are doing or give him a tiny bit every now and then.

Angelic

In my experince, it doesnt really matter if its wet or dry, but the quality and nutritional value of the food is what matters. Just like people, feed your animals food thats not good for them (ie - cheap store brands) youll have many health problems down the road, urinary tract problems, joint problems etc. Just make sure you have a high quality food, like science diet, and feed her healthy treats. Pretty easy really. =D hope this helps.

Rosemarie

Some of the benefits I have heard for wet food are that it has more protein and that cats do not need as many carbs as are in most dry foods and that most cats do not get enough water and wet food is a higher percentage liquid. On the other hand it is more expensive and dry food is better for their teeth. I think good quality dry food is fine for cats.

Anjanette

You should try to mix some in sometime. They have can covers if you dont use the whole can. But I wouldnt do it every day. I started to give my dog the mix after a year of only dry. Then one day I ran out and she wouldnt eat the dry alone. It took a while to get her back to it so now its like a once a week or twice a month treat.

Brooks

Dry food is better for the teethWet food is better for enticing underweight cats to eat more. Other than that, there are far more nutritional variations between brands than between wet vs dry.

Cecilia

Wet cat food can give your cat cavities and other tooth problems. A lot of the gravies used have sugar in it.

Annmarie

If your cat is happy with her food and not overweight I wouldnt worry about it. To read another opinion on dry food as toothbrush go to:www. littlebigcat. com and read Dr. Jean Hofves article, "Does Dry Food Clean the Teeth?"

Jamal

Just let me say my cat is ninteen yrs old and has eaten dry food all her life good luck

Hsiu

If you give your cat a lot of wet food it will give them the sh**s. Wet food to cats is kind of like junk food to us... only good in small portions.

Is it okay to leave wet canned cat food on the counter covered room temperature for 1 day and not refrigerate?

Ariana

My cat does not like the canned food when I put it in the fridge as it dries out I think, and she HATES it microwaved. She likes it fresh out of the can. I have just started covering it on the counter for the day and giving it over time during the day and she loves the consistency. So, its out like that, but covered, for maybe 12 - 14 hours. Has anyone else done that long term with success? Anyone have any problems trying that?

Eladia

I do that everyday. My cat only gets a half a tub of wet food a day (a long with his dry food) and rather then putting it in the fridge (he also hates that) I just put it in a plastic bag and set it up on my window. I have never had any problems in the year that I have been feeding him this way. I think the meat in the wet cat food is so processed its not going to go bad over night or else its just that cats have a fantastic digestive system and it doesnt bother them, I know two cats that eat like that, one is a female and she is 15 years old and the other is a male and he is a year. So I would say dont worry and keep doing what the cat prefers.

Ashley

Yes I do it all the time. I just wouldnt do it for more than a day.

Shavon

No, its meat. 3 hrs max otherwise it starts growing bacteria. Maybe nothing would happen to the cat but it could, and they could feel sick, its not worth it.

Catrina

Throw it to the rubbish, it is unhealthy... get a catfood from pet shop.... and ask them what they recommend you

Dwain

If you left it out where i live it would be gone the next day.

Georgiana

I wouldnt recommend it. The canned cat food contains meat (most of them anyways lol) and the meat NEEDS to be refridgerated. If you dont refridgerate, your cat can get sick from eating bad meat. Try using very small cans of food instead of larger ones.

Cyndi

Give it a smell then decide. it should be fine as long as it doesnt got too hot.

Coreen

Cover it and put it in the fridge. Dont let it sit out at room temp, that lets the bacteria breed, and can cause your animal to get the runs.

Melia

Provided its not too warm in the room its usually ok. Or put in a cooler place at the back of a cupboard. Your cat will let you know if somethings wrong with it. Mine does.

Halina

Yes, I leave the can out until the cat finishes it. If it goes bad they wont eat it, I usually stir it up thoughtout the day. I throw it out after 2 days.

Lovie

Hi from France ♫Naaah.. Its not ok!.. Just leave the canned food 1 or 2 hours before your cat eat it, you put it straight in the plate too... Have a nice day, Cat ( no no, Im not a real cat! )...

Jamie

Yeah

Whats the best and healthiest cat food brand?

Fritz

I use special kitty but I looked at the ingredients the other day and it had by products. Is that bad? Whats the best cat food brand?

Constance

Choose any from the list below. Also see my blog on how to identify good foods. There is no one healthiest brand. Even some good brands may disagree with the occasional cat. But a good rule of thumb is that if you can buy it at the grocery store, its crap. Petsmart doesnt seem to carry any good brands either (that Ive seen so far). Youll find your better foods at indy pet stores, and the occasional chain store. I personally feed Natures Variety Instincts. At $1.79 per can its quite pricy (since Im feeding two cats one can per day each) but it has stablized Poppys sensitive system to a degree Im quite pleased with. And its completely grainless. Before that I fed Natural Balance which is an ok brand as well (and much less expensive).

Ailene

Our vet recommended "Science Diet" which has kept our cat (and dog) very healthy.

Ettie

Special kitty is a substandard cat food. I feed mine Eukanuba but there are good "store brands" as well. Try Cat Chow naturals if budget is a concern

Howard

Purina Indoor is what I use for my cat. She does very well on it and the Vet recommends it. A lot of this special diet stuff is just overpriced and unnecessary.

Jaime

The top dog and cat food brand, which is used by vets, is Hills, Science diet. Hills also makes prescription diets that are formulated to be the least stressful and most beficial to animals with certain medical conditions. Hills foods also just happen to be the most expensive diets. Popular brand-name foods like purina (which is what I feed my cat), Iams, and even Friskies are all about the same level of quality and dont vary much as far as ingredients. Of course, the much cheaper foods, like Alley cat and meow mix are of a lower quality, with lower quality ingredients. All cat foods sold in the US have to contain certain amounts of protein and certain vitamins and amino acids, so no cat food is really going to be unhealthy, damaging, or even lacking in nutrition for your cat. The higher quality foods just use better ingredients, have less fillers (fiber just to make the calorie content higher without adding any nutritional value), and go above and beyond the minimum requirements.

Darline

The best canned foods you can buy use muscle meat as the 1st ingrediants and have no grains as cats are carnivores. human quality canned foods inlude wellness and merrick

Jacquiline

Just feed cat buiscuts instead of meat also it keeps their teeth healthy

Delilah

Yes by products are bad and can be the equivalent of meat from road kill. Some tests done a few years ago even found Phenobarbital in some pet foods. Phenobarbital is the drug used to euthanize animals in vet clinics. Some pet foods use meat unfit for consumption by any living thing (human or animal) in their products. Anyhow, the first ingredient should be meat or fish. Hopefully, the first 2 or 3 ingredients. Cats are carnivores. They NEED meat. The link someone listed above from www. catinfo. org is an excellent source of the leading (in ingredients not sales) food for cats.

Nick

There are plenty of decent pet foods out there. I dont like to advertise, so I wont list any particular ones. All you have to do is read the label, which you seem to have done, already. In the USA and most other countries, ingredients are listed with the highest percentage item first, followed by the next highest, and ending with the lowest percentage. For example, if a can of tuna cat food reads as "Tuna, fillers, water, soybean oil, and salt", then you would know that most of the contents are tuna, followed by the rest, with salt being the least by percentage (of course, with such a small list, its difficult to tell how much salt is in there! 0.1%? 0.5%? 15%?Of course, you could buy the most all-natural pet food in the world, which meets 100% of your criteria, but it will be worthless if your pet doesnt like it! Also, these days, its more important to know which country made the food! Below are some links that may help (there are plenty of brand names listed, but I cannot vouch for any of them; use the links only for the information, not necessarily for the manufacturers). As I said, your pet has the final say!

Dollie

The best food is one that doesnt have fillers/allergens like wheat/corn/rice/soy, which means dont feed most dry foods INCLUDING science diet. Take a look at labels. Some fancy feast flavours dont have any fillers and have some muscle meat as well as biproducts. Higher end products like wellness are higher quality but also are higher in fat which isnt good if your cat has pancreatitis. You can also look at prepared raw diets at high end pet food stores. Your choice depends on what you can afford, what your cat will eat and if there are any other medical conditions. Just please remember that vet brand foods are actually lower quality than many other foods!

What cat food brands are on the recall list?

Anette

Why is everyone scared to give a answer regarding the brand names of the cat food on the recalled listd. Wet food as well as dry, cant we get a honest answer?

Celina

Hi there… Save yourself the hassle of trying to keep up with a list that may or may not be complete. Avoid any food that has Wheat Gluten listed as an ingredient. Its time for pet owners to wake up and take responsibility for what they feed their animals and quit trusting what those great big money hungry companies tell you. Research for yourself, learn, read the ingredients and make an informed decision for the health and safety of your beloved pet. With the recall, wheat gluten is the big suspect in cat food that everyone is trying to avoid, and it SHOULD be avoided. It should have been avoided all along. It’s nothing more than a cheap protein source used as a binding agent by pet food companies. Corn should always be avoided as well. It’s a huge filler worth NOTHING. Corn as an ingredient in cat food is a joke. Ever seen a cat chewing on a corn cob in a field? No, you haven’t. Cats, despite thousands of years of domestication, remain strictly carnivorous. True and honest meat eaters and that is what they need most. Protein from meat! As you search for your new pet food, be aware that there are three Categories of Pet Foods: -"Grocery store" foods – (Generic Brands and cheap name brands) Those foods found in grocery stores and mass-market retailers are made with lower-quality, less-digestible, inexpensive ingredients and are therefore a cheaper alternative. - Healthy foods – (Wellness, Eagle Pack, Drs Foster and Smith) The newest addition to the pet food market - provide pets with the highest quality, healthiest, and most nutritious ingredients. They are typically available for purchase online or direct from the manufacturer. Some better retailers are starting to carry them now. Complete Petmart carries a few healthy brand foods. Foods in the Healthy class - contain nutrient-rich ingredients. :(So, in summery of the ingredients… if you see the words by-products, Animal Digest, the word “meat” alone, Corn, Corn Gluten, Wheat Gluten, or BHA or BHT… stop reading and put down that bag. Be aware that when switching to a Healthy, Holistic or Organic food, you will pay for what you get. Good foods are not cheap. They are pricey and will cost you on a per bag basis much more. Just like steak costs more than hotdogs. But again, you will be feeding a better food and improving the over all health of your pet. Which in turn leads to less vet visits for illness now and more importantly later in life in their Geriatric years. You will also feed less of this food on a per animal basis because a smaller amount of food contains what your cat needs. Overall healthy foods are well worth it, if only for the piece of mind that the ingredients are safer. What are some good foods I recommend? I feed my cats Drs. Foster and Smith Holistic Adult Lite Dry cat food along with a mix of Wellness Dry. I also feed Merrick Canned. I purchase Drs. Foster and Smith online and have it automatically delivered to my door so I never run out and never have to go get it. It’s one of the best foods on the market and has no “fillers” in it. It is also very reasonably priced compared to other holistic foods. And when you’re feeding as many cats as I am, price is as important as ingredients. If you cant afford it, you cant feed it. So buy the highest quality you can and feel good that you are doing the absolute best you can for your pet. If you want to buy in a store, Complete Petmart is a good store and carries quite a few natural, organic, and holistic blends. Also check with your local feed stores. Old Mother Hubbard Wellness Brand is a great holistic food I feed. As is Eagle Pack Dry Cat food. Merrick canned is also a great source of nutrition and they will be coming out with a dry line this summer. Some brands, not all, of Nutro cat food are semi-ok if you want to spend less money, however I personally would never chose their food for nutritional value. I highly recommend people take the time to research for themselves, but the information I have given should get you off to a good start. Good luck choosing a new food for your cats! Side note… Please don’t feed Iams / Eukanuba. It’s ALL fillers, byproducts, animal digest and CRAP. Read the ingredients! There is nothing good for your cat in that food. Not to mention they conduct the most appalling animal testing you have ever seen. http://www. iamscruelty. com to see the terror they create. Drs. What is the cat food brand you feed your kitty? why do you think it is good?

Arlen

P. S this is not a research for a cat food company. Just curious.

Jon

My cats eat raw meat/bones/organs and several brands of premium canned food. One daily meal of raw and two of canned. The raw foods are mostly chicken, turkey, and rabbit (with bone) with chicken, turkey or beef liver and sometimes chicken or beef heart, or lamb kidney. They get beef, venison, or goat with bone meal added once or twice a week. Canned food brands include Wellness, Innova EVO, Merricks, Natural Balance, Evangers and a couple others. Within those brands they eat a variety of meats with most coming from chicken, turkey, or duck. Fish, beef, or venison, once in a while. The only dry food they get is Innova EVO dry of which they get very little. I use that in place of cat treats and for a hunting game the cats enjoy.

Annabelle

We feed our cat (his name happens to be kitty), Friskies Indoor formula for hairballs >.<it seems to REALLY help with hairballs :)

Bobette

I buy fancy feast because its better than the cheap stuff the pound or the store gives them. And it is also fresh. i have four cats and they love it.

Ariel

I feed what they like. Seriously, only their opinions matter. If they dont agree, they wont eat. My cats range from over 14 years of age to around 2 1/2 years of age. The majority of their food is IAMS Original (chicken, orange bag). It has chicken as the first ingredient. One wants meat as the first ingredient. And they are doing fine on it, with zero health problems. They also have a fountain for water.(And now I step back and wait for the IAMS haters to flame my answer!)They also get a treat of wet food once a night, and my oldest prefers 9 Lives Tuna Select, while the rest like Friskies Savory Shreds Beef. They wont eat Friskies Meaty Bits, nor 9 Lives Beef with gravy. So yes, food preferences can become rather selective.

Betsey

I feed my cat meow mix. if itry to give him any other kind, he wont eat it. just buy different brands and see what he/she likes best.

Geoffrey

It depends if your cat is an adult or young. My cat is an adult so we feed him Adult Purina Cat Chow. He loves it! If your cat is just a kitten, I would get the one thatsis not the adult one. And if you want, we get treats for him too. We give him either Wiskas® Temptations ( any flavor is good ), or Party mix. Which ever works better. I hope this helped!

Catherina

Taste of the Wild. I did a lot of research and asked a lot of people a lot of questions and this is the best that I can afford at the moment. They thrive on it.

Elbert

Oh i sorry dont know the name. my kitten loves it. wait it is friskies.

What is a temporary alternative for cat food?

Mario

Last night, someone, I dont know who, came onto my porch and stole my cat food stash. It was placed it this tall cooler thing and they stole it while we were all sleeping. My mom is at work now and I cant drive to the store nor do I have any money on me. Is there any alternative to cat food I can use just until tomorrow? (Earlier I fed them a cooked hot dog, broke into pieces.)My fridge and pantry is packed with stuff, so I bet Ill be able to find something.

Regine

Amazing that someone would actually steal cat food off your porch - how low can you go? Cats are carnivores, so any unseasoned, unsalted, non-smoked meat (including organs like heart, kidneys), poultry or fish will do for now (cats dont need the amount of fibres and carbohydrates we do) - EXCEPT PORK. Pork can contain Auzjeskis disease and could potentially be deadly for your cat. You could cook the other meats / poultry/fish or give them raw (cats digestive systems ARE made for that stuff ;)) - dont bake in butter or oil or fry. Once again; only feed these as a temporary solution; meals like these lack the needed minerals, variety of fatty acids and vitamins or contain them in the wrong proportions to make for an appropriate long term diet.

Alpha

Tuna

Mariel

Cooked chicken broken up into small pieces and rice. Tuna?

Elma

Tuna fish will work, but if you have your cat on a specific diet, you can use canned salmon, or cook some rice and put chicken broth over it.

Awilda

Cats love cooked turkey and chicken, you can feed them that.. it wont harm them. some people say milk, only because theyre retarded. Cats are highly lactose intolerant, unless you wanna clean up liquid **** all day, go with poultry.

Alline

You could blanch some chicken meat for them, blanching means putting the raw meat into boiling water, then you would want to shred it into small peaces. if you feed them tuna give them very small amounts as it not good for a cat in large quantities. the same for cows milk very small amounts it all you want to give them.

Renee

If you have some chicken, toss some in a pot of water and boil it.......NO SPICES......this is for cats, not humans.....Then, you can mix the cooked chicken with some boiled rice ( no seasonings ) and your cats will LOVE you........If you need some "fiber" in the mix, you can add some unsweetened cereal.....Hope you only have to do this for one or two meals, or your cats may decide that they prefer the "substitute" food better than their cat food! :-)Hope this helps........Good luck.

Alayna

Water-packed tuna is best. If you want to make cooked white rice (unseasoned) you can add a bit of that to it. Salmon works too, or lightly browned ground meat. Amazing that someone would steal your cat food stash, isnt it? I had some friends who had a stroller stolen from their front porch. Look for joy-riders on a stroller eating cat food and youll have the guilty party or parties.

Laronda

Cooked chicken is always good! Apart from that just tuna or sardines if you have them.=)Ally x

Savanna

Sure. Do you have any canned tuna or salmon? What about any other type of meat or chicken? Cats love rice, so try that, but youll ideally want to get some protein in them. Also, scrambled eggs sometimes work. What about some bacon? Do they have treats? For one day, theyll be fine, so just keep tempting them with the nutritious stuff. My cats all love popcorn, but Id put this fairly low on the list :)

Dominga

Tuna, cooked chicken, turkey, or Pork, deli meat.

Cornelius

Boil some white meat chicken and rice and then allow it to cool. You can give this healthy food to your cats not tuna fish. Tuna fish is not really safe for cats and is very addictive once a cat eats tuna then that is all that they will want to eat.

Pa

Looks like you got a homeless problem! Hungry cats will eat just about anything: canned tuna, cooked noodles, even spaghetti sauce. Cheese, egg (cooked or raw), grease, any meatleftovers. Animals do not intentionally starve themselves to death and neither will your cat starve overnight. So, you can let them go hungry for a few hours or feed them any of the above-mentioned items.

Alease

Try giving them some chicken, tuna, turkey, salmon. make sure you put them in bite sized pieces. if you think something might harm them, dont give it to them. its better safe then sorry. :)

Amado

Canned tuna will work, or raw ground meat if he will eat it.

Andres

Forget about the cat...you got a more serious problem, I mean, hey, somebody "stole" your cat food...This is serious sheet, man...I mean, The Dude does not abide, you know? We gotta catch that thief and get him or her a cheeseburger or sumpthin, you know what I mean?(Im suddenly picturing some homeless guy eating catfood in a bowl with some Kesslers...geezus...:)

What is the most favorite tastiest kidney diet cat food that cats will eat and where can i buy it immediately?

Nannie

My cat refuses to eat the canned kidney diet food thatthe vet sells and I am looking for alternatives

Charlette

Is it k/d? Cause I know A LOT of cats that refuse to eat k/d. There are definitely a few renal diets out there (Purina makes one, Eukanuba makes one - check out felinecrf. com for tons of info) but I recommend Royal Canin Modified Formula. Until about two weeks ago I could have honestly said that I never knew a cat that turned it down, but of course there had to be that one who would make me not be able to ever say that again. But not much can be said for her taste as she chose to eat the k/d over this magical food. Seriously, thats what we call it at my practice, "Magical Modified" because (almost) every cat will eat it. It has mackerel in it which I think the cats can really taste and LOVE. Plus, you can always add a little chicken broth to any canned food to increase water intake and make the food a little tastier for our finicky friends. I prefer most Royal Canin therapeutic diets over the Hills RX diets anyway. I think they are much more palatable and have higher quality ingredients with less by-products and preservatives. I actually have my cats on the Calorie Control diet. OK, Ill stop going on about the RC therapeutic foods, but seriously, try it! You dont need a prescription for it like you do for the Hills foods but you do have to buy it from a veterinarian. If your vet doesnt carry it, call around to other vets in the area or call Royal Canin and ask them where the closet place is where you can buy their products. (800) 592-6687. If there is a bigger emergency hospital in your area they should carry it. I dont know where you live so I cant really help you out with that part, but good luck and I hope she likes it! http://www. royalcanin. us/products/produc…Oh, there is also another Royal Canin renal diet called LP but I dont think that goes over any better than the k/d chicken as far as flavor. But it does come in pouches so its more of the chunks and gravy deal than the regular mushy food so if your cat is into that sort of thing, they may prefer LP you might want to try that. http://www. royalcanin. us/products/produc…

What is the main difference between dog and cat food?

Danuta

And as Ive read ingredient labels it appears that cat food is generally better than dog food of the same brand and usually has higher protein levels.

Dakota

Yep, that is one of the reasons they are different. The protein level in cat food is way too high for a dog. Dont feed the dog cat food.

Kaylee

Cats food contains an ingredient called taurine that is vital to cats health. The absence of taurine will cause eventual blindness due to degeneration of the retina as well as hair loss, tooth decay, and heart problems. To clarify, it wont hurt your dog to take a nibble now and then, but a steady diet of cat food is not healthy due to higher fat and protein levels. Dogs require plant products in their diets while cats do not.

Charlsie

Julie D is right. Dont feed your dog cat food. You might think, oh yeah protein is a good thing, but its too high in protein for dogs.

In

Cat food does have higher protien.. but cats need higher protein. Cat food is richer in fats and other nutrients. That doesnt mean cat food is "better".. cat food is better for CATS. Cats have a higher metabolism and need the higher levels of protien and fats in their diet.. there are nutrients in the cat food that cats need. Dogs need DOG food.. the higher levels of fat, protiens and nutrients can cause problems if dogs are fed cat food, such as pancreatis, bladder/kidney stones, upset stomache, etc.

What are some ingridents i should look out for in cat food?

Crissy

Whats some good brand food for my cat? I want him to live longer and healthy. I feed him purina right now.

Bernadine

You want to watch out for grains and by-products. These are ingredients found in lower quality foods and are hard on your cats digestive system. Higher quality foods like Wellness, Merrick, and Innova are made with muscle meat and little to no grains. If you cant afford to feed premium food, some good mid-grade foods are Fancy Feast, Authority by Petsmart, and Chicken Soup for the Cat Lovers Soul. Heres an article on selecting a good food for your cat. It has some really good info. http://www. littlebigcat. com/index. php? ac…Dont feed fish based foods more than 2-3 times a week and consider a wet only diet for your kitty. Wet food provides much needed moisture to your cats diet to help maintain his kidneys. Here is more info on why feeding wet food is best for cats. http://www. littlebigcat. com/index. php? ac…

Amberly

Innova Evo and Felidae are two that come to mind. Purina = not too good. These ingredients should be avoided: corn, meat by-products, poultry by-products, meat and bone meal, rice, pretty much any vegetable or grain. Look for something with a lot of meat but not too much else.

Candra

I would watch out for magnesium as it can cause urinary problems.

Enda

Any words that are long and you dont understand. -_-

Allyn

A lot of the time, its easier to know what to avoid. Ill list some good foods at the bottom. :)You should look for quality, named meats, like chicken, turkey or rabbit. Beef or pork can be given, but they often dont agree with cats. Meals are okay (like chicken meal, turkey meal, etc), but there should be some non-processed meat too (like turkey and chicken).Eggs (written as either Eggs or Fresh Whole Eggs) are a great source of protein and are highly digestible. Try to look for natural preservatives, such as Rosemary extract and Ctric Acid or Vitamin E. Mixed Tocepherols are also okay. What to avoid - Grains (corn, wheat, rice, barley, oats). Also anything like ------- flour or ----- gluten or ------ hulls. If it has the name of a grain in it, dont buy it. However, if you cannot find a grainless food, oatmeal is considered better. Note that maize, ground yellow maize, etc is technically corn. However, Zea Mays is okay - its actually corn silk and is healthy for a cats bladder system.-Unnamed meats. meat meal, meat by-products, meat by-product meal or just meat are a no go. This can be anything from euthanized pet animals to roadkill - lots of companies were getting sued for that. ( read about it here: http://www. mflegal. com/petfoodlawsuit )-(more) Unnamed meats; stuff like poultry this, poultry that or fish this, fish that.-any chemical preservatives such as ethoxyquin. Vitamin K3 is also bad. I suggest you feed WET, CANNED food, not dry. Its shown that a cat that drinks no water and eats only canned food is 50% more hydrated than a cat on dry food that downs water all the time; and water is very improtant to a cats health, as it prevents urinary, kidney, and renal problems! Wet food also does not rot teeth like so many say, nor does kibble clean teeth. If you watch a cat eat kibble, they just chomp once to crack it or swallow it whole; it never rubs or cleans the teeth, but instead, crumbs drop into the gumline and rot into sugar. I suggest you read this site to teach yourself more: http://www. catinfo. org. Good brands are:Wellness: http://www. wellnesspetfood. comOrijen: http://www. orijen. caNaures Variety: http://www. naturesvariety. com

Christoper

Check the labels. There should be NO corn and NO by-products. In the first five ingredients at least two should be meat sources (again, not by-products). The ingredients are listed from largest item to smallest, so the first five are important. Good dry foods are Wellness, Wellness Core, EVO, Wysong Vitality, Royal Canin Siamese 38, and Prairie. There are more out there, just look at the ingredient list. Most grocery stores dont carry anything of quality, you need to look at a pet supplies store.

How do i get my kittens to eat cat food?

Kimberlee

The kittens are 6 weeks old and should be eating soft cat food but they wont. Is there anyway that i can get them to eat it. I have had kittens before and they would already be eating hard food. Thanks to anyone that can help!

Antoinette

When I was raising kittens, I started the "first time feeders" on Iams KITTEN Formula ( dry ). I just set a flat-bottomed dish (square cake pan works great) out, with the dry food in it, and theyd "nibble" on it when they were hungry. I liked to use the Iams, because its TINY, and easy for them to chew! Later, I switched to Science Diet KITTEN, which was oilier, rounder, and smelled GREAT!!Some 6 wk old kittens mature more slowly, and yours may not be ready for the dry, yet. But, if you set the food out, and show it to them, Ill bet youll see it "go down" pretty quickly......once they get the taste of it. Just be sure to have a "non-spillable" bowl/pan of water nearby, so theyll have something to drink. Not too close, though...dont want food in the water!!Are you feeding them KMR, or is mom still nursing them? If theyre used to KMR, you can try putting a few bites of the Iams in the milk, and see if that helps with the transition. But........dont give up on the dry food.......its good for them, and they will eventually eat it. Hope this helps...........Good luck.......enjoy your babies!!

Hsiu

Cats are like humans and have their own individual taste buds. Change the brand of food. Buy a can and see if it will eat it. You might want to delude it with some warm water also. My cats likes it that way. He also wont touch the 9 Lives Bran and any other cheap brands. Finicky, Id say. Also try to change the bowls. Be sure the bowl is clean and doesnt smell of detergent. Try to put some catnip in the bowl. My cat will look at the bowl with a suspicious eye if I feed him something that was in the same bowl which he didnt like.

Catherina

If you find out how let me know my kittens are 7 weeks old and one of them is still only eating cat litter! The others went through the same faze but eventually got the drift. I just leave the food out for them all the time dry and moist and they copied their mum, but this ones a bit slow on the uptake bless.

Gracie

You should try to give them wet food, try different brands, try putting water or milk in the dry food, try to get the kitten and the grown cat food, see what ingredients and try and get cat foods without those ingredients, maybe they are not ready for cat food and still need warm milk, if so try and put out a bowl of warm milk and cold milk, I hope these help!

Cordelia

Science Diet and Iams are horrible foods. UGH! Just look at the ingredients, corn... by products. Just disgusting but do what you want and then make a spay appointment for your cat. To many cats and not enough homes for them. Do you realize that 75% of healthy cats are put down and thats not counting the ones that are feral. They suffer before they die, they get hit by a car, they freeze to death, they starve to death, ... its pathetic what happens to feral cats. Again please get your cat spayed. No homes for them.

Shizue

Have you given them the kitten food or the same as their mum. Theres lots of different kitten foods in the shops and Im sure youll find one that they like. Maybe they are just still enjoying their mums milk and will change over quite soon. Try giving them some chopped up cooked chicken they might like that. Like some babies they are all different.

Cherrie

Try a differnt kind of food, They may not like the smell of the one you have gotten for them. You might just try giving them kitten chow alone. I understand dry food is better for them and they will live longer then if they eat wet food.

Carletta

Maybe theyre eating something else that theyve found laying around the house? they will get hungry eventually and eat. also, if youre sitting their with your head over there shoulder, thats probably the reason!

Bill

Get some KMR (Kitten Milk Replacement) and gradually mix it with canned food, making a gruel. I have been fostering kittens for 2 years now (some were bottle babies) and this is what we do.

Gil

Um maybe try mixing it in with their kitten food? add more and more of it every day until they get used to it and eventually they just eat the dry stuff.

Cortney

First you open the cats mouth then you set it in there mouth or you taste it in front of them.

I leave cat food out from friday to sunday each week and the possums raccoons eat it how do i stop them?

Hilary

I cannot take my two cats with me each weekend, so I must leave them home with a bowl of cat food. There are two possums and one raccoon that eat the entire cat feeder in one night leaving my cats without food for the rest of the weekend. How can I stop these critters? I cannot come home at night to take in the food. What do I do?

Use Moth Balls around the outside of your house, near bushes and under the deck or any place that the possums or raccoons would go on the way to the food.

Feed them inside.

Nickolas

The one that worked was the radio in the garage with a bright light on. It worked perfectly after I got my timid cat to get use to the radio talking. When I returned home, the feeder was only down 1/4 of the way as it usually is for the two cats. Thank you to whomever suggested this!!

Edmond

Leave your cats inside for the weekend. From Friday to Sunday, they will be fine indoors with water, food, and kitty litter.

Anitra

You shouldnt be leaving your cats unattended for the whole weekend, how about asking a neighbour to pop in and feed them, alternatively, keep them in at the weekend, provide a litter tray and plenty of food and water. Other than that, alter your weekend routine.

Renita

Unless you leave the cats inside with a litter box and food and water the racoons and possums will continue to eat the food and leave your cats hungry. Why are your cats left out all weekend anyway? Thats a sure fire way to get them attacked, killed or hit by a car, they would be safer if left indoors. I used to leave my cats on my patio that was screened in, they had shelter, bed, food, water and a litterbox I put up a lattice screen along the lower half of the screened in porch and screwed it in so racoons couldnt rip the screen and come in and my cats couldnt get out.

Well, buy a dog. Dog will eat raccoon lmao!

Janette

Keep your kitty cats inside with lots of kitty litter and water and food. As fo those possums and the racoon. electric fence em! (or just buy a shotgun or something)

Jerold

Retrain your cats to be inside cats or retrain your self to stay at home with them.

Iluminada

Try to set a trap and catch it of when it takes it shoot it with a be be gun or shotgun or rifle

What kind of bug likes to eat clarinets clothes and cat food?

Melanie

I have found tiny, furry, brown bugs in my clarinet case after a few months of not touching it. When a piece of cat food gets onto the floor these same bugs are found on them. And now I have gone through my winter clothes and found about 5 of these things on my sweater!!!! What are they and how can I get rid of them. I would be able to identify them in a picture.

Heriberto

If you will re-ask the question and attach a picture or two of the critters alongside a ruler ( for size reference ) I bet someone could help you. Try the URL below. I hope this helps

How can i get my cat to eat her food?

Burton

My mother bought cheap generic bran food. My cat refuses to eat it and will eat the dog food instead. We tried mixing the dog food with the cat food, but she just picks out the dog food and leaves the rest of the cat food. I dont want to throw away a big bag of cat food. How can I get my cat to eat the cheap food? Should I just give it to my dogs so it doenst get wasted?

Afton

Buy other cat food. Cats need things that r in cat food.

Bryon

If it were u n u didnt like it at all i kno u wouldnt eat it so y make her eat wat she dont want. n if the dogs will eat it they just give it to them.....n of course she wont like it, its cheap n healthy n stuff....... who wants that? She would want the flavory juicy meaty kind...........lol duuu

Ernest

Cat foods have higher protein then that of dog food for nutritional reasons. Feeding a dog cat food as a habit can cause health problems in the dogWith all the recent recalls. When a food is cheap generic food it generally does not and WILL not provide needed nutrition over a long period of time. Your cat will also be shorted its need for a higher protein by eating the dogs food. Do your dogs also get fed cheaper generic dog foods? I would toss the generics and buy better foods, a better bet over all as nutritionally wise your pets can get sick and require expensive medical care to regain their health when fed poor quality food. I dont normally post here, but your question really grabbed me. Purrson from Animalchatters on SMFhttp://animalchatters. smfforfree3.com/in…

Launa

It wont hurt if you give the dog a small amount of cat food this time, but too much protein is bad for dog as well as too much protein is also bad for a cat. However cats do need more protein then dogs. Kittens need 50%protein, adult cats need 30%protein. Dog food doesnt have enough taurine in it or enough essential vitamins for cats. dOGSAre they carnivores? Are they really like wolves, hyenas and jackals? Or are they more like us? Is it foolish to feed only meat? Should they be fed what their human family eats? The truth encompasses a little of eachIn the wild, other hunting animals that seem similar to dogs, such as wolves and hyenas, eat fruit, leaves, grasses, dig for roots and even obtain vegetable matter from the stomachs of their prey. The bones of their pray provide calcium and help keep their teeth clean. Their diets are highly varied and change seasonally. A domestic dog fed on human diet struggles with dairy products and can actually be poisoned by some of the common ingredients in human pantries. The pitfalls of feeding a home-cooked diet are that it is very hard to balance and very easy to overlook the ways in which it is isnt balanced until dog becomes ill. With a little research and attention to detail, dogs can do very well on a diet of home cookingCATSCats are strict carnivores. this mean that some of their nutritents can be obtained only from animal sources. However being a carnivore doesnt mean that all of the nutrients need to be from animal products or that a carnivorous animal could survive eating muscle meat only. A wild carnivore such as a lion will kill and eat an atelope. it will lickthe hair off and chew on the skin. the organ are consumed, including partly digested grass, leaves, and other grazed plant material. Last of all, the bones are eaten too. Cats and Dogs are also very different in their needsCats are notiorious for being fussy eaters.

Robbi

U s hould never give dogs cat food vice versa donate the cheap bag of cat food to a snimal shelter go get good cat food cheap cat food doesnt have the nutrients in it that cats require if a cat doesnt like its food cat will not eat spend a few more pennies for nutritional food or U will pay it at the Vet for illness

Gretchen

Dont feed dog Food to your cat. It harms your Cats health. I suggest to you get different type Cat Food. Here you can get best Cat Food in discounted price from http://www. agritura. com/index. php/cat/c2… This Cat Food well balanced with Natural Healthful ingredients.

Does it matter if you give your kitten adult cat food?

Dudley

Does it matter if you give your kitten adult cat food as opposed to kitten food? And also, how much food are you supposed to feed two 4 month old kittens?

Jamison

Kitten food is best, if you do give an adult food make sure its labeled for all life stages (sometimes this is necessary in a community population like barn cats). At this age most cats do well free-fed: that is keeping food out at all times. If someones getting overweight, then you should start measuring out the food. Check the back of the bag, and feed to the weight your cat should be, not what the cat weighs currently. Also keep in mind that cat food manufacturers want to sell cat food, so when in doubt start with the smaller portion. Adjust what youre feeding up or down by 10% at a time depending on how fat/skinny your cats are getting.

Amber

Kitten food contains more fat and calories than adult food. Kittens need the extras for energy and to promote growth. Kittens should eat kitten food until a year old. There should be a feeding chart on the can or bag.

Chi

. As noted on the package, kitten food should be fed, according to weight, and at least 3 -4 times a day when they are young, then up to 1/2 cup per pound as they grow. Kitten food is specially prepared for your kittens and is more nutritious, providing elements they need to promote healthRight now, my 5 month old kitten is laying on his back on my lap, and chasing my fingerfs while I type. I feed my gusy 3/4 cup kitten food twice a day, and 1/4 can twice a day. Habing 2 kittens, I have to make sure that each gets his share, and the other downnt try to move in, as kittens are rone todo. My vet says that the best judge about how much to feed is to judge how much they eat is to give them a specified amount each day, in the morning. If there is some left at night, dont change the amount. but, when they finish that amount during the day and increase by 1/4 cup, for the first year..And only give a small amount of canned food, because they need the chewing activity to help clean teeth. I use my finger every couple days, as a tooth brush. One more important thing - plenty of water in a clean dish, daily. If they run out of water, youknow where the next choice is = UGH!.

Debbie

It does because it might hurt anything in the jaw areaand ur supposed to give them it least a half a cup

Anthony

Compare the labels look at just how much difference there is between kitten adult food. OTH - there is food that is "formulated for all life stages", the important thing is the taurine protein levels. I once had several litters of kittens reject kitten food altogether raid the older cats NutroMax Lite Senior bowls. NutroMax uses the same ingredients, just different amounts in each formulation. I just left down plenty of food so that they had dry food available all the time. They were fine. As long as it is a quality food not cheap cereal.

I am looking for some recipes for homemade cat food?

Benjamin

Since the problem with the commercial cat food, I would like to make my own, using good quality meat, chicken and fish. I do feed tuna on occasion, using a good brand of albacore low sodium, water pack, for my 15 year old male, however I am aware that they can become malnourished if they do not get the proper vitamins, taurine, etc. They also eat a good brand of dry food. Any help would be appreciated.

Cliff

I wish I could help since I am looking also. I have found many recipes that either dont have enough nutrition for a cat or it calls for things bad for cats. avoid recipes calling for onions or garlic because these can cause deadly heinz body anemia in cats and dogs. ( see http://www. peteducation. com/article. cfm?… ).cats who eat fish need extra vitamin E or they are at risk for streatitis also called yellow fat disease. ( http://www. cat-world. com. au/FeedingFish.… ) so unless it is an occasional treat tuna should not be a regular food unless given with the proper amount of vitamin e. also cats cant convert beta carotene to vitamin A nor use the fats in flax the way humans do. so many natural cat foods add flax to no effect. Human bodies can convert the fatty acids in flax to EPA and DHA. Cats lack this ability. sorry i can only give cautions and not a proper healthy recipe. If I find one before this question closes I will come back and post it.

Denae

Thats what weve been doing weve been blending up fish, a source of nutrients and some other stuff(secret) and hes been healthier than ever

Corrin

Dont know of any recipes..

Benita

Cook rice and mix it with any kind of blue fish. The easiest is to take a pack of sardines or tuna, but you can use any fish, as long as its cooked or marinated ( if you use raw fish, your cat will definitely love it, but your apartment will smell like fish market)

Alane

I would go ahead and buy a dry food with lots of vitamins and minerals and then pour milk over it and heat it up to moisten the food, then mix it up with tuna. I have never tried it but we did do something similar for my puppies and they loved it, so i would give it a try. good luck =)

Eleonor

Don`t give your cat milk it causes diarrhea

What is a good cat food that doesnt cost a whole lot?

Willia

I currently feed my 3 cats GoodLife because I read somewhere that it doesnt make their poop smell horrible but Im not sure if its really all that healthy for them. Id like to give them a decent quality cat food but one that doesnt cost a lot.

Mitzi

GoodLife is not healthy for them, no. Two of the most affordable of the higher quality foods would be Chicken Soup for the Cat Lovers Soul and Felidae. If you cant find a food, most of the high quality cat food brands have websites with store locators on them that will help you find the store closest to you which supplies their products. Simply type the cat food brands name into Google, go to their website, and type your zip code into their store locator. Remember that foods should be switched gradually (mixing the new slowly in with the old over the period of about week or so), especially when switching to a higher quality one, so as not to upset tummies. For example:Days 1 2: 75% old food, 25% new foodDays 3 4: 50% old food, 50% new foodDays 5 6: 25% old food, 75% new foodDay 7: 0% old food, 100% new foodDarksong~

Marketta

I agree that Good Life is not a good quality food to feed your kitties. It has too many fillers and not enough good protein. I personally chose Blue Buffalo for my cat. I love that it has no corn, soy or wheat. It has a good amount of protein and is not too much more expensive (I pay $10 for a 3.5 pound bag). As far as smelly poop, my cat could probably win the contest (she has gas that can clear a room). Shes had it her entire life regardless of what I feed her. So I dont think its the food, but just so you know, her poop might smell horrible because of Blue Buffalo.

Karma

Read the label. You want one that is made from meat and meat byproducts. with as little corn and other grain as you can get.

Leon

Try Whiskas or Saborvida

Deangelo

Science diet costs about 69 cents per can

What can i feed a cat besides cat food and tuna? need answer quick?

Donita

Right now I have a very hurt stray cat outside, i dont have any cat food or tuna - what else can I feed it? The cat seems to have very few teeth so it cant be very tough. Thanks.

Dwayne

Milk and or really fine pieces of chicken....... scrambled egg is good too... mash it up real fine.... good luck! Thanks for being so kind too :)

Devorah

Milk.

Darin

Try lettuce

Karma

If you really cant get to the store to buy some cat food maybe you could try boiling some chicken and tearing it into little pieces for her. p.s. if shes very hurt, can someone take her to the vet??

Eleni

Raw liver or hamburger would owrk, anyother type of fish would work. Milk is bad for their systems, but they love it!! - Punkin

Concetta

Chicken, milk, fish.

Willie

Some soft leftovers you may have in your fridge, or warm milk with bread in it.

Fiona

Ice cream.

Noah

If it is a stray cat, it will almost anything, try some bread. Tuna is actually not good for a cat (according to our vet), since they dont normally eat it in the wild. Cats love tuna, but it can cause problems. We have a stray cat that we adopted, it would eat rice, bread, anything. Thanks for being so kind hearted.

Juana

Chop up some lunch meat like ham or chicken and give it some milk

Cindy

Any of the meat baby food is good, if you have it. That was the one sure way to get my cat to eat when she was sick. Any protein really. Rip open a TV dinner. Make sure that whatever you give it does not contain onions. Also consider calling a rescue group to pick it up.

Brigida

Been in the same position as you are in right now. I managed to get the kitty to eat some cooked chicken. And a small bowel of watered down milk. Ended up the poor fella had been hit by a car and then a couple of dogs got a hold of him. Was hurt pretty bad. Did manage to handle him eventually and took him to the vet. They had to put him to sleep because his poor little back was broken. Good luck to you...but do try the chicken.

Dominga

NOT milk!!! This will just make the hurt cat, sick as well. Milk is not easily digestable by cats, so stay away from that. If you are desperate and need something on hand....try lunch meat...ham, turkey, bologna. Then get to the store ASAP and call a vet!

Errol

Meat flavored babyfood, milk, some wipped cream(not too much),or you can blend some meat or something.

Loralee

Cats are lactose intolerant and dont give it milk, go to the store and buy moist or wet (canned) catfood since the cat has few teeth. if the cat is a stray, it will probably eat whatever you get it

Barrie

Ground beef or other meat, canned chicken,

Delila

NOT cows milk!!! Cats are intolerant to cows milk and this will only give them diarrhea!! Cats are carnivors - they can only digest meat properly. Yes, you can add other things but their system was not designed for it. Cooked chicken or ground beef are your best options. Good luck

Afton

Cheese. Chicken broth (cooled). Also - Ive owned different cats for 30 years and they have always liked milk and never got sick from it. Theyve always enjoyed it.

Corazon

DO NOT FEED THIS CAT MILK!!!! Milk is very bad for cats because they cannot break down the lactose in the milk and it gives them digestive problems, especially with a stray in as poor a shape as the one you have. I would suggest rice, a little bit of bread, baby food (chicken, beef, pork), yogurt, or cottage cheese.

Herman

Scrambled egg.

Jena

Cats are lactose intolerant. Never feed them milk or any other kind of dairy. No canned tuna, either. There is something in the tuna that is bad for them. Just give the cat some cooked chicken. If the cat is too injured, it wont eat anyway. Get it to the emergency clinic!!

Patricia

Just offer the cat water. You dont need feed it anything, they may need to sedate it to do the exam. Your great for doing such a kind thing for this cat.

Joaquin

4 1 thing, NO DAIRY itll give her diaria. this should help: http://www. ehow. com/how_2448_feed-cat-ba…

China

You can feed them turkey, chicken or any meat.

Damon

Canned chicken, shreded beef. cooked hamburger. choped up hot dogs. This isnt really healthy for them but it will get you by until you get the cat to the vet. The vet will advise you what to feed the cat.

Olene

If you are taking this poor little one to the vet today do not feed her as much as this might hurt you to do as she might have to be sedated and she will need to have no food in her stomach. you can try giving her just the tuna juice. i love you for being so compassionate to this mistreated little lady. thank you from a fellow cat lover. oh sorry i thought you said you have tuna. do you have any baby food? like the little jars of pur meat? cats looooove this. NO human cow dairy products. best to not feed her until after she sees the vet. you dont know what proceedures he will need to do and if she is feral or a terrified stray she will need sedation just to handle her and if she is in pain which im sure she is sedation maybe called for just to do xrays. he may want the spay her at the same time so no food in her stomach is a must. if she is in pain and afraid then she will probaby not want to eat. it is best for her at this point. keep her in the carrier in a quiet place away form any swtressful noises and other animals or children. please email me to let me know how she got on as im a huge catlover and will worry about her. kaylamay64@yahoo. comYOU RULE!!!!

Miki

Diluted milk or wet dog food if you got any.. hot dogs mashed up or any kinda meat. but if its going to the vet i would wait and see what the vet says.. just try milk or water for right now they may have to do surgery and dont want the cat to throw up on the table.

Robbi

CALL THE VET AND ASK!! They may want to operate immediately and if so - they MAY NOT want any food in the cats stomach!

Darleen

DONT FEED IT MILK!!!!!! It is very tough on their digestive system....it will give him BAD RUNS!!!!! Baby food (chicken) works, especially if it is sick. OR, you can boil some chicken and cut it up, maybe blend it up since it doesnt have many teeth. The only milk you can give it is evaporated...GOOD LUCK!

Cleotilde

A chicken or other meat baby food (check label to be sure theres no onion salt/powder!!!) is ok as a short term alternative at least. Also, cats will tend to refuse food they cant smell - and I think some severe dental/mouth problems can result in decreased sense of smell. Try warming canned food or meat based/no onion product baby food in a microwave for just a few seconds and then presenting it to the cat. Check the food temp on your skin before feeding it to her b/c you dont want it to be too hot. I just noticed the kittys going to the vet soon...they can help you out with the food issue too. Its very sweet of you to be doing this.

Mayme

Cook up some chicken or turkey and cut it up into tiny bits. Wait til its cooled down then give a handful to the cat.

Is there a cat food that both kittens and adult cats can eat together?

Andy

I have two new kittens and 4 adult cats. I am trying to give the kittens Kitten Chow but the adult cats keep eating it. I need to find a cat food that both Kittens and Adult cats can eat together. Do they make a cat food for all cats?

Claudio

Sure! Many high-quality foods are all life stages. http://www. wellnesspetfood. com/cat_welln…http://www. evopet. com/products/default. a…http://www. evopet. com/products/default. a…http://www. solidgoldhealth. com/products/…http://www. solidgoldhealth. com/products/…http://www. solidgoldhealth. com/products/…Both Wellness and Solid Gold can actually be found at your local PetCo. You might need to go to an independent pet store or a tack/feed store to find Evo. Did you know that Purina products arent good for cats? Flip over the packages and check out the ingredients. If you see corn, corn meal, gluten, soy, wheat, animal byproducts or animal digest, it shouldnt be fed to cats. The reason is that corn, corn meal gluten, soy and wheat are fillers that are only added to cat food to bulk it up. Animal byproducts are the parts of slaughtered animals (beaks, feet, intestines, lips, etc) that are not fit for human consumption. They are very poor protein sources. What you DO want to look for in a cat food is a named, whole meat or meat meal (chicken, chicken meal, etc) as the first ingredient(s). Cats are obligate carnivores - they need their meat-based diets! :)Ive linked you to some other brands below; some of them make All Life Stages formulas, and some dont. Best of luck!

Denisse

If you feed a better quality food, you can feed it to both your cat and kitten. The better quality foods have plenty of nutrition for growing kittens. Its really all about nutrition, not special kitten formula. Kitten food is really a marketing gimmick. If you dont believe me, then I challenge you to go to a pet store that sells Blue Buffalo, Wellness, California Natural, Innova and the premium foods. Compare an "adult" bags protein and ingredients to a bag of Purina Kitten Chow. There is more nutrition in the "adult" formula of the premium food than in the special kitten formula that youre using now. My foster kittens are all fed Innovas EVO (mostly canned) and they thrive.

Jayme

Well, that depends on what you want your cat to look like. Typically kitten food causes adult cats to get fatter. Adult cat food will not harm the kitten, but it will not add all of the nutrients they need while growing. One thing you can do is use an adult cat food, but soften it with a little milk for the kittens.

Jacquline

If you really want to keep both foods separately instead of using only kitten food you can get a box and cut a hole or two big enough for only the two kittens to get into. Keep their food under there.

Audria

Hi, You might want to find this out. http://astore. amazon. co. uk/bonallabodog-21/detail/B000VC1H2CHope this may help

Evalyn

I just let the kits eat the same dry food i was feeding their mom. Friskies reg dry stuff. they started eating it when they were about 4 weeks.

Julie

Put them in two different places. put something in the adauldt cat food that they really like.:)

Odilia

Try Mice

Brant

Why are you feeding kitten chow? how about this? Thee really isnt a difference between kitten chow and senior nor between indoor and active food!!! It is called advertising and it is killing pets. They all need appropriate food for the speciesFor multiple cats, wellness has 12 1/2 oz cans. that would come out cheaper and food prices do not include vet bills Nutrition since there are so many bad things out there is very important to your cat’s healthContrary to what you may have heard; dry foods are not a great thing to feed a cat. Please read the label on what you are feeding? What are the ingredients? Do you know what they mean? Is the first ingredient a muscle meat like chicken or meal or other things? http://www. catinfo. org/#Learn_How_To_Rea…http://iml. jou. ufl. edu/projects/Spring04…Dry foods are the number 1 cause of diabetes in cats as well as being a huge contributing factor to kidney disease, obesity, crystals, u. t.i’s and a host of other problems. Male cats are especially prone to blockagesfrom dry food. Food allergies are very common when feeding dry foods. Rashes, scabs behind the tail and on the chin are all symptoms The problems associated with Dry food is that they are loaded with grains and carbohydrates which many cats (carnivores) cannot process. ( Have a fat cat?)Also, Most of the moisture a cat needs is suppose to be in the food but in Dry, 95% of it is zapped out of dry foods in the processing. Another thing, most use horrible ingredients and dont use a muscle meat as the primary ingredient and use vegetable based protein versus animal. Not good for an animal that has to eat meat to survive. http://www. catinfo. org/#My_Cat_is_Doing_…You want to pick a canned food w/o gravy (gravy=carbs) that uses a muscle meat as the first ingredient and doesnt have corn at least in the first 3 ingredients if at all. THE BEST CAT FOODS CONTAIN NO GRAINS NO BYPRODUCTS Cats are meat eaters not cereal or rice eaters Fancy feast is a middle grade food with 9lives, friskies whiskas lower grade canned and wellness and merrick upper grade human quality foods. I would rather feed a middle grade canned food then the top of the line dry food. Also, dry food is not proven to be better for teeth. Does a hard pretzel clean your teeth or do pieces of it get stuck? http://www. felinefuture. com/nutrition/bp… Please read about cat nutrition. http://www. catinfo. org/ http://www. catinfo. org/feline_obesity. ht… http://maxshouse. com/feline_nutrition. ht… Vetinarian diets The reason your vet thinks so highly of the pet food they sell probably has more to do with money than nutrition. In vet school, the only classes offered on nutrition usually last a few weeks, and are taught by representatives from the pet food companies. Vet students may also receive free food for their own dogs and cats at home. They could get an Iams notebook, a Purina purse and some free pizza. http://iml. jou. ufl. edu/projects/Spring04…Nutritional Education Program website page for the American College of Veterinary Nutrition.
