Reasons for Frequent Urination In Overweight Cats

Is your obese cat urinating frequently? Generally, frequent urination in overweight cats can be caused by a whole lot of factors which are direct effects of medical conditions. Some of these medical conditions can be mild or severe cases. Regardless of the accompanying conditions, you should seek professional help for your cat from a certified veterinarian.

It is not uncommon for some cats to urinate 2, 3 or even 4 times a day. Generally when we say "frequent urination" we are referring to an overweight pet cat relieving itself more than normal for that cat. If your cat usually uses the litter box 3 times a day and now you notice her going 4 and 5 times a day, you are seeing "frequent urination."

Some common causes of frequent urination in obese cats are:

Obesity: If you have an overweight cat, it can cause her to urinate frequently. The fat mass pressing on the bladder can cause her to urinate more frequently. If you notice that your overweight cat is constantly lying on her back more than usual, she is probably trying to stop her fat mass from pressing on her bladder. This is one more sign that your cat will need to loose weight.

Behavioral Disorder: Frequent urination in obese cats can also be caused by behavioral disorders. Behavioral disorders can be caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain or mental anguish from a cat that has recently experienced some sort of stress. Such behavioral pattern can even cause your pet to urinate outside of the litter box. The only way to know for sure is by conducting a proper veterinary examination.

Age: As obese cats get older, most of their organs become weaker. It's very common in older cats to have a weak bladder which causes an inability to hold urine in the bladder for a long period of time. A weak bladder in an older cat doesn't equate to excessive loss of fluid through urine. He may be passing the usual amount of fluid daily but more frequently.

Diabetes: Has your overweight cat been drinking excessively and constantly urinating? Diabetes is one of the major causes of frequent urination in obese cats. Some other signs of diabetes include weight loss, vomiting, poor body condition and weakness. Obese cats with diabetes are normally giving insulin injections on a regular basis. If you notice any sign of diabetes in your cat, you should take him straight to the veterinary hospital.

Cystitis: Cystitis is a common urinary tract infection that can cause frequent urination in obese cats. This type of problem is more common in male cats. When a cat is suffering from Cystitis, tiny crystals will form in the urinary tract which creates a blockage. The bladder becomes overfilled with urine which causes an uncontrollable burst of fluid to come out involuntarily. Cystitis is a serious condition in obese cats. It can be deadly if it's not treated immediately.

Let's add a touch of reason to all of these scary conditions. Just because you see your cat use her litter box a couple of more times than normal in one day does not indicate a horrible, age-related, chronic and debilitating disease! Your overweight cat may have simply played longer with a new toy and drank more water than usual; with the predictable results.

Use more frequent urination as a red-flag warning that you need to more closely monitor your cat's health, environment, play and general behavior. If the unusual frequency continues without an apparent reason, then it is definitely time to consult your veterinarian.

I have two overweight cats that I love dearly. One has developed a chronic urinary condition that requires special food. The other is progressively getting arthritis. I do not wish anyone to experience the distress, or the vet bills that I am going through. I wish I had the plain and simple reasons and solutions years ago that I found right here.
