What is an appropriate amount of cat food to feed?

Lillia

I have a full grown cat about 5 to 6. I think I have been feeding a little to much so can I have a schedule like 2 daily or 1? What kind of cat food to i use Meow Mix. How many cups of whatever used? Thanks alot.

It really depends on your cat. You dont say if (s)he stays indoors or out; outdoor cats generally need more since they are more active in roaming. Some owners feed their cats twice a day; however, some cats like to snack more often throughout the day and night. I took in a stray who began to gain weight when I was keeping food in her bowl at all times. I put her on a weight-control food (which you may want to try til your cat gets to her/his ideal weight) and started leaving only a handful in her bowl; that seems to have done the trick. Just experiment a little and good luck!

It depends on the activity level of the cat and what kind of food you are feeding. I feed my very active one year old cat 1/3 cup of food morning and night. He is the perfect weight according to my vet (10 pounds), has lots of energy and produces very little waste that doesnt smell too bad. I would suggest slowly switching to a higher quality cat food because Meow Mix is a terrible food for cats. Its nothing but corn and wheat fillers, with little to no actual meat, like a wild cat would eat. Go to a pet supply store, like PetCo or PetSmart and read the ingredient labels on some of the foods. Look for the first ingredient to be chicken or beef meal, not by-products and not corn, wheat or any other grain. Those should be down towards the end of the list. Blue Buffalo makes an excellent food. If you are feeding a high quality food, you cat will eat less of it, process the food better in its digestive system and produce less waste with less smell.

I feed my cats twice a day, with a half-cup of food per cat per feeding. But my cats go outside, so you may want to feed maybe a third of a cup per feeding. Two smaller feedings are better than one big one. Try to keep it to the same times every day (at least roughly.) Trust me, after a couple of days, hell let you know if you forget--youd think he had a watch stashed under his collar or something. Meow Mix is probably fine, unless he has some sort of chronic condition, in which case your vet will make a recommendation.

I have a cat who in our years is 17 years old, she has about 1.5/2 handfuls, but in small portions throughout the day. also our 1 year old cats have 2 handfuls each in morning, and night, also is they are still hungry ether give them a little more to last till next feeding, or keep giving in small portions. it depends on the age and the physical activity of the cat, if stays in the house sleeping, give it some biscuits on a schedule of 2-3 times a day. if active give food when every they come asking for it. wet food is for kittens, it is good for nourishment but for low budget and decent quality food go biscuits. wet food isnt always the best!!!hope this helps

Meow mix is like feeding your cat McDonalds every meal. I would suggest getting on a higher quality cat food, like wellness, evo or blue buffalo and that will definitely help with weight problems. I feed 1 5.5 oz can of wet in the morning and at night for 2 cats, and let them free feed on dry most of the time. Both my cats are extremely healthy and active and fit, so I stick with this. For one cat they make smaller cans of food. Good luck!!!

About two months ago I recently put ours on a kitty diet, recommended by the vet... She has lost almost two pounds and is now at the weight that she should be... We feed her purina indoor cat formula and give her 1/4 cup @ 5am and 1/4 @ 5pm... It worked for us.. Good luck!!

I feed my cat just under 1 tin a day with a few biscuits.
