Is it healthy to feed a dochshund dog cat food?

Pearlie

We had just adopted a little dochshund dog recently that wont eat anything but the cans of cat food we have for my aunts cat. I just want to make sure its safe for him.

The protein in cat food is vastly different than in dog food. This difference can be deadly to your dogs kidneys and liver, especially for a puppy. DO NOT feed him/her cat food please. If you donthave any food yet and need to feed him you can actually cook for him using household food. Rice is good for dogs. You can add some vegetables such as green beans or peas and carrots or sweet potatos and some protein like a pack of tuna or salmon or some chicken. If you make a batch of this stuff he can eat it until you get dog food. Just remember that any change in diet may make his belly upset and cause gas or runs so be wary. When you do buy a dog food go for a high quality one that does not contain animal digest (roadkill and euthenized animals) or animal protein (same thing).

Cat food is definitely not good for dogs! While cats are strictly carnivores, dogs are actually omnivores. Cat food is much higher in fat and protein, which will make it easy for your little dog to get fat very quickly! Try offering him canned dog food, and if he will not eat that, you can try to mix the cat food and dog food, but gradually put in less cat food until he is eating only the dog food. I have seen several dogs that were fed only cat food, both were incredibly obese, and one was also diabetic. Also, when offering him the canned dog food, warm it up a little bit in the microwave (but not too hot), this will make it smell for appealing to him. One thing to keep in mind though, canned food does not clean dogs teeth like dry food does, so you may want to eventually switch him over to dry food if possible, after he is reliably eating the canned dog food. Good luck!

Once a dog gets a taste for canned food it is hard for them to willingly eat dry food. They make canned dog food that will be nutritionally superior for your dachshund, since they are prone to skin allergies and will likely get dry, flaky skin if not on a proper diet. Cat food also has too much protein for dogs. If you can, put in some dry premium food in with his canned food, or just buy dry food and try moistening it with water or a little (1/2 tsp.) olive oil, which is great for his coat. Eating only canned food can cause cavities and will not help with tartar.

Its not healthy to feed any breed of dog cat food, or vice versa. Cats have very different nutritional requirements, and feeding a dog cat food or a cat dog food can make them very sick. You are setting your dog up for a possible trip to the vet if you continue, so I would advise you to find a good quality puppy food and start feeding him that. Dogs will not starve themselves. Even the pickiest eater will start eating after missing one meal because of refusal to eat.

Ike

No....Cat food lacks the plant nutrients that dog need. Cat food contains essential vitamins, minerals, fats and protein that could cause health problems in dogs.

Lady

No. cats and dogs have different nutritional requirements. I can tell you that your dog will eat what you give him and is only picky because you allow him to be. If you feed your dog on a schedule, he will learn to eat what you give him. Put his food down and give him 20 minutes to eat it. Anything he doesnt eat gets picked up and no treats or snacks until the next meal time. Repeat until he gets the idea that he has to eat what you give him, when you give it to him. A healthy dog will not starve itsself.

1. Learn to spell. Dachshund. 2. NO, this is not healthy for your dog. It can cause problems later on in life, due to lack of proper nutrition. Whoever he first (and still) gets the food from needs to be punished. Quit allowing him to eat it and buy him a few cans of Iams wet food and mix it is with his dry food, follow the instructions on the can for his weight and how much to give him. Dont ever allow this to happen again. 3. You shouldnt own a dog if this is how he is cared for.

There is a reason for dog food and cat food. They are different because each animal has nutritional differences. No, its not healthy at all to feed a dog cat food. If the dog is healthy, it WILL eat dog food if you stop offering it other things.

Jin

I HAVE A YORKY WHO AS A PUPPY ONLY ATE CAT FOOD, SHE EATS ANYTHING NOW DOG FOOD WISE, SO TRY NOT TO WORRY UNLESS THEY ARE ILL THEY WILL EAT DOG FOOD EVENTUALLY, MY OLDEST YORKY IS 13 YEARS OLD NOW, IT DIDNT HURT HER. AND BOBBY SHE ISNT ASKING FOR SPELLING LESSONS, JUST ADVICE ABOUT CAT FOOD!!! WHAT A TERRIBLE ATTITUDE YOU HAVE!

Brant

No its not okay. Get him on a good quality Dog food. He will eat when he gets hungry. Here is what I feed. http://www. chickensoupforthepetloverssou…Plus canned food is bad on the teeth.

Cleo

Do you mean DACHSHUND? Cat food has way too much protein and fat for dogs. Put the dry dog food down, and if he doesnt eat, simply pick it up, and NO food until the next feeding.

Anisa

Cat food is too high in protein and fat for dogs, and you should be concerned about kidney damage. Feed the cat where the dog cant reach. He wont starve given no other option than dog food

Aurelio

Cat food is NOT save for dogs, feed him dog food and move the cat food where only the cat can get to it.

Emeline

I have heard that cat food isnt good for dogs. But, I am not a Vet.

Krystina

No especially a puppy who needs proper nutrition. Buy canned puppy food then.
