Is it typical for cats not to like cat food containing fish?

Clarine

I feet my two cats Wellness canned cat food. They clearly prefer the formulas without fish (turkey, chicken, beef and chicken) to those with fish (beef and salmon, turkey and salmon, chicken and herring). Is it ok to cater to their preferences and only buy their favorites, or it is important for them to get some fish in their diet?

Feed your cats what they like and something that is healthy within reason. While fish may not be a natural part of a domestic or wild cats diet neither is chicken, turkey or beef. When was the last time you saw a cat take down a beef cow and eat it? In the wild cats eat small birds, frogs, mice, chipmunks etc. They also eat garbage and all parts of the animals they catch including bone, blood and sometimes even feathers and hair. In reality, a natural diet for a cat that simulates what they would eat if they were starving in the wild is not always whats best and healthiest for a cat thats living in a domestic situation. After all, the lifespan of an outdoor feral cat is only 2 years or less. An indoor domestic cats lifespan is 12+ years. Since stores dont sell a wild mouse and bird formula, its up to you to pick the healthiest food that your cat will eat. For some cats thats fish based food and others its meat or poultry based. What you are feeding is healthy and if your cats like it thats even better.

Fish is not critical to a cats diet (so says my vet).Protein is. Some cats wont eat fish the way some folks dont like certain foods that every one else seems to enjoy.

Chantelle

Feed them what they like. if its good food you are giving them, it will have what they need in it. my cat loves tuna but will not eat salmon. dont worry about it.

Aaron

Dont worry about it; fish is not a natural part of the domestic cats diet (this would apply especially to seafish! - when was the last time you witnessed a cat fish at open sea?), while red meat (rodents) and poultry (birds) are - so your cats are actually making the more natural choice. You can trust the formulas of the better brands to be complete, no matter what the source of meat or the flavor.

To my knowledge, most cats love fish. I have two cats that will do anything for a little fish but about a year ago I got a kitten; he really doesnt like fish. It varies from cat-to-cat I guess. As long as your cat is healthy and gets the nutrients it needs, Id say its okay to cater to their preferences. Most cat food companies add the vitamins in no matter what; its just the flavor that changes.

I also have two cats, and they only eat certain kinds of fish... but Im sure nothings actually wrong with your cats or anything! Maybe theyre just picky or something?

Cats dont seem to like certain fish. My cat is going through a phase of refusing Whiskas pouches with tuna but likes the salmon and especially the prawn ones. He likes IAMS dry food with ocean fish in it. Previously he had a phase of refusing to eat all cat food in pouches, preferring to hold out for some Donegal Catch cod and whiting fillets (food for humans). He used to like rabbit (caught two of them and ate them at our front door) and lamb but had a phase of disliking chicken too. They have to get protein though - they are obligate carnivores.

My cats dont eat fish (3 wont touchit, one will eat it if its there). So I have played around for other proteins, and found what they like and thats what they get. I feed them EVO, tinned, as well as a small quantty for free feeding, and then they get Addiction tinned at night, which has 50% protein, and they love it.
