What can i do to get my dog to stop eating cat litter and cat food?

Cyrus

She is eating cat poop and the litter. I have seriously moved it all around the house and she always finds it. I dont know what else to do. Same goes with the cats food. Im not getting rid of either one of them. I love them to much. I just know its not good for her to be doing this. Is she missing something in her diet if so what? I am so confused. please help!

Brent

Put the cats things up higher.... on a shelf or a table. The dog will not try to climb up there, and the cat will find it very easy to do. They love being up higher than the dogs. Of course, you have to find two separate places, because the cat will not want to eat nearby the litter box.

Riley

Feed the CAT TO THE DOG--NO MORE PROBLEM

Alda

Simple. move the cat litter to another room where the dog cant access it.

Bibi

Feed him a cat. He obviously is attracted to them.

Blanch

You need a cat litter box that the cats can enter but not your dog.. As sick as it is..dogs will do that.

Jerold

We had the same problem so we had to put the cat food on top of the table were th dog could not reach. As far as the litterbox goes, good luck!

Ashleigh

Try putting the cat litter in a covered box. Feed the cat where the dog cant reach.

Edison

We had that prob. with a dog i had but i have no clue what to do jus keep beating the concept into him he might learn

Rolland

Cat poo is like "brownies" to them I heard. But its not good. Do you have a basement? Put in a cat door to the basement and leave her stuff down there and dont let the dog get to the basement. Thats what I did.

Diann

If you have a cat, then keep it somhere where you know your dog cant get it. If you dont have a cat and youre keeping it in the house then throw it out!!!!!

Nestor

Put hot pepper on your cats poop or something that will give him discomfort.

Eliza

I had same problem if u have the room and can do it put a cat door to the bathroom and put all the stuff for the cats that way. the dog then should stay out of there. thats how we keep dogs from cat stuff

Terence

You need to put the cat food and the litter high up so the dog cant reach them. We have the same problem with our cat so we put her litter tray up on a table in the laundry and her food is up on another table - she is on dry food so its no problem. There wont be anything wrong with your dog. They are just big lovable pigs and will eat anything! lolHope this helps.

Carla

I think its a dog thing try getting a lid for the litter box and make sure it stays clean. As for the food it wont hurt her to eat the cat food its a different taste and dogs are alot like kids they want something that they arent getting even if its not better. However be sure that she does it her own food every so often because her food as speacial nutrients for dogs in it. try only feeding the cat at certain times and when the cat is done eting pick up its food so the dog doesnt get it.

Shavonne

We have this problem, too.....both are like yummy treats for dogs. I have to put the cat food UP on top of the counter, elevated so the dogs cant get to it, and maybe you can put a gate or some kind of barrier where the litter is, so that the cat/s can get over/through it, but not the dog. Maybe youll have to get a lidded litter box with a flap. Would that keep the dog out? Depends on whether the dog is big or little. Good LUck!

Kimberli

My dog eats the cat poop to we tried alot of things but after awhile we just accepted it but we try to catch her as much as we can becuase she knows shes not suppose to try punishing her by making her sit in a spot for a long time without leaving it works pretty well with my dog now she barly ever get into the cat poop and as for her eating the food theres not much you can do ither than move it to a place were the cat can jump up to it and the dog has no chance mabey on top of a luandry machine

Cathy

Dogs will do that.. You need to find a place that the dog cant get to, but the cat can.. Problem solved.

Barb

Dogs will do this - I dont know why, but i have the same problem. I solved the problem with the cat box by getting a covered litterbox - now she doesnt bother it anymore. as far as the cat food being eaten - i dont know what to tell you - the best thing i can suggest and what I had to do was put the cat food up higher so the dog couldnt reach it

Kaci

Mix the cat food in with dog food and give it to them. It wont hurt them. Your other problem you need to talk to your Vet about that.

Candida

This is not uncommon. You have quite a few choices, move the kitty litter box into a room that has a constantly closed door and install a kitty door. They also sell covered boxes that have a kitty door built in, if your dog is too big, he might not be able to get his head in. You could also put the kitty box up high where the dog cant get to it, but the cat still can. This might be a problem with old age though. With the food, do you free feed, or at certain times of the day? If you free feed, switch to a schedule feeding time, and feed your cat before the dog. Supervise. Scold the dog if he eats the cats food. You can also move the food into a room, like suggested above with the kitty litter box. If all else fails, call a animal behaviorist. They can help you find out if this is a jealousy problem or a habit.

Thats a good question. My sisters cats eat the dog food she has out for (you guessed it...) the dogs. For some reason, they prefer it. And dogs eating cat litter, I just dont understand! Ive seen it and the thought of it twists my stomach a little bit. Id rather shoot myself in the foot with a nail gun than even consider eating cat litter. Ugh... foul. I dont really know that a dog eating cat food, or vice-versa is any less nutritious than if they ate food formulated for that specific animal. My sisters cats are very well grown and fed for being six months old and having eaten dog food their whole lives, even though they have cat food available... they just dont like eating it. I guess maybe its a social thing, but I dont know otherwise.

Golden

Is she by any chance a hound or Beagle??No kidding, some dogs just love to eat poop. My in-laws moved the food and litter box into their laundry room and put up a gate which the cat could pass over...but their beagle could not. Look here: http://www. buzzillions. com/prd-347167-fr…

Did you know you have a very smart dog? You were trained by your dog. And you reacted to it. The idea is to get control of the situationTry feeding the dog her food at the same time every day. Offer the food in the same bowl and location all the timeDo not give the dog anything extra. The dog will not starve! Eventually the problem will resolve itself. Also, put the cat food up on a table or counter away from the dogs reach. If she cant get to it then she cant eat itSame thing goes for the cat poop and litter. Put the cat litter in the bathtub. The Cat will find it and the dog may continue looking for it..At least you have geographically solved the bulk of your problem.

Anisa

Well, Ill tell ya what. We had that same problem for years. What we ended up doing was cutting out a small square in the basement door and putting a cat flap in it. The litter box was moved to the basement. The cat could go through the flap, but the dog could only get his head through. So when the whole, "Thats bacon, I can smell it a mile away!", "Dogs dont know its not bacon." "Its BACON!!!!!" Thing happened, the dog was just out of luck. Cat FOOD, on the other hand, should be put on a table or shelf where the cat can get to it but the dog cant.

Carol

Buy a gate and block off the rooms you have cat food and the litter box in. because cats can jump and most dogs wont try to go over the gate

Bari

My dog did the same thing. The easiest thing to do with him was to put the cat food up to where he couldnt reach it and to use a baby gate in the room that had the litter in.

Andy

There is a lot of protein in cat food, and also cat waste, the dog is going after that. It is gross, but there is nothing wrong with your dog. One thing to try is to feed your cat up on a counter or table that the dog cant get to. With the litter box, you have a couple options. You can put the litter box in a spare room and install a cat door into the regular door. The cat door needs to be too small for your dog to get through, but still adequate for the cat. Or, you can get a self-cleaning litterbox, such as a Littermaid. With the latter, the cat waste is moved to a covered collection bin automatically, thus reducing the availability of the waste to your dog. I hope this helps.

First thing you should check the dog food ingredients + see that they dont have any/if little food fillers. These are grains, corn, . . . that only leave the dog hungry after awhile. This higher quality of dog-food costs more. heres a site of someone who did some research into home-made, bought dogfood. He also tells what dog food he feeds his dog(s). He also has a link for dog food recipes. http://www. dog-obedience-training-review…Why do dogs eat cat poop? according to this site, they eat it because its full of protein + vitamins, so this must be what hes missing in his diet. I would also relocate the cat litterbox, where the dog cant get it or block it off but available access to the cat only. http://www. xomba. com/why_do_dogs_eat_cat…Our mini poodle was doing it + eatting dog/cat + rabbit poop. But he also was overweight + sometimes they will eat anytthing that has some nutrients in it just to fill their stomach. Let fattening food fed to him helped + feeding him a higher quality food.

Delbert

Dogs like cat food and cat feces, due to higherproteinsin cat food diet, its awful..they sale at any vet, aproduct called forbid..you sprinkle into cats food, then his feces arent as good as beforetry that, alos try putting liite box else where abnd scooping more often and feeding up high away from dog. you can also sprinkle pepper, on poop and dog will snezze and usually not be as interested,,,hope this helps..Im a vet tech..good luck

Gretta

Your cat can jump and your dog cannot, so there is not a reason in the world to have the cat food within reach of your dog - put it up where the cat can get it, but not the dog. As to the litter, clean out the poop every time your cat uses it, I am sure that is what the dog is after. It may take some work, but I have 5 dogs and 3 cats and can manage to keep everything separate - so can you.

Asha

I dont know why dogs like to eat cat poop but they do. Shes most likely not missing anything in her diet. Cat food and cat poop smell very good to a dog. Cat food can actually be bad for dogs because its high in nitrogen..... can you put the cat food where the dog cant get it or maybe keep the dog in another room while the cat is eating. Id def move the litter box where the dog cant get to it. Good luck with that...I wouldnt give up my dog for a million dollars.
