Is it enough to feed my cat one sachet of food per day and keep his bowl topped up with biscuits all day?

Coy

Its costing me a fortune, he eats 4 or 5 sachets a day easily and the biscuits are so much cheaper than the sachets. Also i only live in a small flat and the cat food stinks!! My cat is about 12 and a boy, he is mainly a house cat, goes out about once a week. Ive started just giving him biscuits through the day and one sachet at night, is this enough?

Ashlyn

I feed my cats 3 meals a day of dry food.

Ami

Yes - you can feed a complete dry diet if you want to. Just make sure the biscuits are designed as a complete diet and dont buy the very cheapest ones. Look to see if they contain Taurine which is important for a healthy heart, and make sure you leave out plenty of fresh water.

Rebecca

Yeah, im sure its ok, my cat eats dry food, i try to give her some wet (a little) to keep her protein up, its just enough to keep her from over eating on the dry. i understand how wet food is, maby you could change it up give him canned instead of sachets, unless he has a special need. canned is just as good

Kimberely

I am not exactly sure what biscuits you are talking about. The more expensive the food, the better ingredients in it. usually with the higher quality foods you need to feed less so it lasts longer. i. e Science Diet, Iams, royal canin, etc... I feed mine Science Diet Lite Hairball Control Dry and they love it. pouch food is about the worst you can feed as far as additives and ingredients are concerned.

Ardis

I have 4 cats. I get asdas or morrisons own tinned food (24 tins) plus 2 boxes of complete dry food every 2 weeks. It costs less than £9 a fortnight. it will last you ages with one cat.

Emeline

I dont think it is, the recommendation on my box is 3-4 per day, my cat is 1 and i give him 1 in the morning, afternoon and night. He has biscuits for all day as well.

Dorathy

I noticed you can buy biscuits that are for house cats in the supermarket, might be an idea if he mostly stays in. my cat has 1 pouch and biscuits throughout the day.

This is not a proper diet for a carnivore. cats should never eat dry food. a proper diet for a cat is a raw or at least canned food diet with no grains and this det should be based on human grade meat. just because the pet food companies make this kind of food availible does not mean that it is okay to feed. please understand that cats are carnivores and carbs have no place in thier diets. please do your research rather than asking a bunch of unqualified people on the internet. it makes me very sad when people say that they cannot afford quality food for thier pets. if you cannot afford to have a cat you should not have a cat. this sounds harsh but you are doing your cat no favors by feeding they this sort of diet. also get over your preoccupation with the smell because your cats health is more importatn than your dislike for a smell. nutrition is the basic building block of absolutly every bodily process that occurs within the body. your cat will get diabetes if you continue to feed this type of diet. also grains cause cancer in cats. they myth about dry food cleaning thier teeth is just a myth. does eathing a cracker clean your teeth? please feed your cat a product like aunt jenis hommade for life or prowl. the dehydrated raw diets are cheaper then fresh and smell less but i personally feed my cats fresh food. also if you are going to feed your cat dry food then feed it Innova EVO hwich has the fewest carbs and most protein of any dry food. if you are going to feed canned feed this brand or another like Instinct, Wellness or if you insist on feeding low quality food like purina or whiskas (which are full of byproducts and grain) then please avaid they types of canned food with gravy because gravy equals carbs. a cats digestive system is very dfferent from a persons. they are made to digest raw food. 60 years ago commercial cat food was invented and it has been the worst development in the health of cats and dogs ever. their systems are made to digest raw meat and the companies who make raw diet are the ones who have your cats health in mind. it is a myth that all meat is contaminated before cooking. do not feed your cat raw grocery store meat but other than that you will be fine kibble is the worst thing that you can feed your cat.

Aleida

I am not familiar with the term sachet as related to cat food, but I presume you mean wet and dry cat food. Sounds to me like your cat is getting too much food. Try feeding him a tablespoon or so of wet food mixed with a little water and between 1/4 and 1/2 cup of dry food twice a day. Free feeding (leaving food out all day) tends to produce overweight cats.

Kera

At his age its more than enough! In fact its too much! Im surprised hes not obese already. If you must feed a commercial food, For his HEALTH its better to give a mix of wet and dry! Dry will help keep his teeth clean, and the wet makes sure he gets fluids. Cats especially elderly ones get Kidney or Bladder problems from a diet of dry food only unless they are a rare one that drinks a lot. Having kept and bred cats over the last 50 years I can say not many cats do! It should never be dependent on cost though! Do you buy yourself the cheapest food available? He should have a small bowl of dry in the morning and a sachet/pouch or small tin in the evening. Actually if you really want to go cheap, feed him raw meat. My two cats have a mix of meats and fats (in the correct nutritional proportions) from the butcher and it costs 10p for 1lb. They also have chicken wings about twice a week cost £1.30 for 15! Occassionally they have the trimmings from any fish I might cook and My 16 year old is according to my vet fitter than most cats half his age! Hes all muscle too as is my 4 year old! Cats are true carnivores and dont need the fillers and vegetables that pet foods contain!

Nilda

It is if biscuits complete food and for older cat

Vito

What is sachet? Anyhow, it doesnt sound like the cat is getting good nourishment and you seem to be bothered by the cost of food. To be a responsible pet owner, you need to feed it decent food. If you cant afford decent food, you should not own a pet.

Emory

1-2 sachets a day is usually average for a cat. you can try him on a dry food diet only, but dont suddenly switch between the two, and make sure the dry food is a complete meal. if u want to feed him wet and dry food, it needs to be balanced. normally u have to decrease the amount of wet food you give them, as the wrong balance can give upset stomachs. also get a decent food. other treata every now and again are good too tho.

Damian

Thats fine my cats only eat dry food. One loves wet but cant eat it an the other turns her nose up to it.

Flo

I feed mine two Felix sachets a day and leave Tescos Premium Cat Crunchies dry food out too. The Felix ones dont seem to smell at all bad - certainly not like the cheap supermarket canned food - I used to gag when I opened a tin. If he is a big boy, he may need more. Just checked the box and it suggests up to three in two meals.

Anthony

Thats fine. I feed my cat that and hes ok. Hes the perfect weight for his size. I swear food companies recommend feeding more so you buy more, giving them more money.

Halley

My baby girl suffers with gingivitis and the vet has told me to ONLY feed her dry food. I cant do that to her though (shes a cat - she needs meat) so I give her 1/2 a sachet in the morning and the rest in the evening, leaving out a bowl of dry food and PLENTY of water. If youre feeding dry food make sure you leave tons of water down. Shes perfectly healthy (apart from her poor little teeth) and is even putting on weight.

Garland

As long as its "complete" dry food. Why have you just decided this when youve had the cat so long?

Daphne

Although I feed sachets in summer, I dont find they contain enough food to satisfy cats in winter, and seem to contain mostly gravy or jelly. I have one big boy who will eat a tin of food at a sitting! if you feed your boy tins, Cats protection used to sell special clip on lids to keep the unused food fresh, especially if you keep it in the fridge. I dont think your cat will be happy with just one sachet a day.

Christoper

Cut out sachets and buy GOOD quality tins, and bics, not ones that are full of colourants like Go-cat or Whiskers, but science plan or better still Royal Cain Which contains no wheat (not good for cats digestion) Iams Id never buy. They destroy the animals they use to try the foods out on, Go to Iamscruelty. com

Emely

Give him a bowl of biscuits thats always topped up, and sachets through the day when hes asking

Eun

I have two 6 year old female cats...i feed them a big bowl of biccys and 1 sachet BETWEEN them a day....they are still alive and one is slightly over weight! After your cats initial shock at the reduction in food Im sure it will be enough for him to live and enjoy life by.
