Why does my cat constantly beg for food when she has diabetes?

Daron

I give my cat a can of md cat food, and a shot of insulin. Could she also be hypoglycemic? Ahhhhh!

I have the same issue, my cat is diabetic and I give him insulin twice a day. I feed him royal canin duck/pea wet food, it is expensive but he does really well on it. He wakes me up very early in the morning and I get up give him a tiny bit of food and go back to sleep until it is time for his insulin shot and then he gets the rest of his food. Same thing in the evening, I will give him a snack and then wait until he is due for his insulin shot before giving him the rest. He went in last week for his routine blood work and his blood sugar was well regulated so even with his hearty appetite his insulin doesnt need to be increased. Also at this time of year both of my cats have been really hungry, so I have been feeding them a little bit more. Just keep an eye out on these symptoms: if you are feeding him more and he is losing weight, drinking more water, frequent urination (with larger amounts of urine) then you should take your cat to the vet to have his blood sugar tested. The weight loss is a really important symptom and should not be ignored. Good luck with your diabetic cat, its alot of work but it is really worth it.

Your cat is probably just hungry. A diabetic cat is unaware of her condition, and will beg for food just like any other cat. My cat begs for food 24/7, and hes perfectly healthy.

Have to remember that sometimes the food the vet sells you is crap.. they sell it because they are paid to..if your cat was on a good diet of decent food - she might not have got diabetes in the first place - this is often the result of eating crappy low quality food like Purina etc..md - and those prescription diets are marketed so vets sell them...

If your diabetic cat is still wanting food after a normal meal and her medication then she needs her insulin adjusted. My dog is the same way - his insulin is always being adjusted. Take her to the vet for a blood test.

This is normal in some cats. For instance, at times my cat begs for food when shes not really hungry. The thing is she thinks that shes hungry. But sometimes she is just really hungry. If your still worried, or it keeps going on call the vet.

Now now, settle down! Kitty has absolutely no idea that she has diabetes. Shell beg for food as much as a cat without diabetes will. So please, settle down! I highly doubt that she is hypoglycemic! Shell be fine, the poor kitty!

Feeding diabetic cats every 3 to 4 hours is recommended, you need to feed small meals so they can keep their blood sugar at an even rate throughout the day. The insulin is necessary of course, but the small meals are necessary too. Small meals = 1/2 of a 3 ounce can. Or 2 tablespoons of dry food. Over the course of the day theyre eating what a regular cat would in two meals. You need to also have her stool checked to make sure shes not got worms taking nutrition from her. Any vet can do a check on a sample you bring to them. If she were hypoglycemic shed be on the floor unable to move, unable to focus her eyes. She is not hypo.
