What should i do about my kitten eatting my 1 year old cat food?

Collette

My one year old, was just switched to Science Diet Adult a month ago. and my kitten is on Ims right now. Ive honestly tryed everything! i put the kitten food in a differnt room of the apartment(didnt work), Ive put the kitten bowl on top of the other food bowl, when my older cat is done eatting(seems to help, but i feel bad for my older cat). and finally ive come to the point of putting the right bowls infront of them. I almost wonder if i should swich my kitten to Science Diet since the adult and the kitten look and smell the same or do the wet food, cuz my 1 year old wont touch wet food. I want my babies to be healthy, and eatting what they should be eatting to help them grown, im just lost on how to make them eat there own. So anyones advice will be help fullThanks.

Your kitten doesnt need to be on diet food, dont let her just eat the adult food or she may not get the nutrients she needs. feed them in seperate rooms. cats can not open doors. its that simple. how can it not work unless you let them out or leave the food out???you should never leave the food out all day long - feed them, when they are done, remove the food..

I would give them both kitten food.

First, Science diet and Iams are crappy foods. Look at the first ingrediance: they should be MEAT based. Try Nutro or Natural Balance from Petco!! Natural Balance has one type of food that both animal can eat together!

Please do not switch to wet food right now. With all of the wet food recalls, I would be afraid of poisoning the cats. Just put out both. If they only eat the science diet, then switch them both to the one they like. I put one of mine on Science Diet Regular at a very early age, because it was what she liked. They get more vitamins, if the actually eat the food. If she is refusing to eat it, she isnt getting any vitamins. If you do not like broccoli, but it is good for you, should I take away your hot dogs?

I think its best to feed them both high quality food that are appropriate for all life stages. Super-premium and holistic brands are usually made for both cats and kittens, so itll be no problem if you feed them both at the same time, or if they eat out of each others bowls. Iams and Science Diet arent very good food, Im sorry to say. If you look at Science Diets labels, they use a lot of by-products and fillers, things that your cat shouldnt eat. Try brands like Innova, Wellness, Eagle Pack (I use their holistic line for my cat), or Merricks. They are a bit more expensive, but you wont have to worry about your kitten eating your cats food or vice versa, and theyll be getting all the nutrients they need. Good luck!*EDIT*I just received an e-mail about Natural Balance. Apparently, one of its flavors is in the recall list (and to be safe, Id rather not use the whole line). Please check the recall list before changing/switching food.

Im a Lincensed Veterinary Technician and used to work for an all cat clinic. Our philosophy, if too difficult to feed separate, was to feed all cats in the house the adult food. Keep food available to them at all times so the kitten can eat whenever hungry. Its best to feed them both the adult food; because the kitten food can actually make either one of them overweight, which opens up a whole new can of worms! As long as the kitten is gaining weight like it should be, dont worry - just feed something high quality (not generic brands - and watch out for the recently recalled pet foods). Sure kitten food has more fat and protein, but my boss, "The Cat Doc", has never come across any problems feeding adult food to babies. In fact, she has found over the years that the cats fed kitten food when young grew up fatter, especially in the belly - you know that hanging belly called the apron? Therefore, she actually promotes feeding adult food unless the baby is underweight. She also never recommended wet food as a daily dinner unless you plan to do that always. Many cats become to dependent on the wet food and will refuse to eat dry. To add to others comments on holistic foods, Natures Variety is another really good one. They base all their food on raw meats. Its meant to make a cats diet more like it would be in the wild. I disagree that Science Diet isnt very good. I think its much better than the Purina One-type foods. I would compare Science Diet to canned fruit and foods like Natures Variety foods would be compared to fresh fruit. Canned fruits are still good for you, but manufacturers add unnecessary ingredients to it that deplete some of the nutritional value of the fruit. Therefore, the fresh fruit is the better choice, but a little more expensive. (Check out http://www. naturesvariety. com.)

I must answer one more before my big trip! What you might need to do is try to teach the kitty which food he or she needs! Simply, if she tries to eat the one, dont let her. There are two ways I have found affective in my kitty training days! One, you could simply be gently yet firm. If she goes for the food, say no and point to the other dish. Show authority and the way she needs to go. Its like... if you get a person stuck in a problem, give them a way out. So, if you stop her from eating that food, shell naturally look for something else, mainly, where other food could be. Try picking hr up and placing her in front of her food dish. Two, you could treat her in what she does. If she goes to one food and you dont treat her but instead pull it away, she might wonder why. Then, show her to her food bowl and if or when she begins to eat give her a "Good kitty!" and pet her. Its helps them learn between things. Thats if you want to train it, but you can d whatever. Cat food is essential to the cats, so Id say just feed it the Adult if you want. Training is sometimes fun though!
