What dry cat food is safe to feed my cats?

Blair

I have 4 cats, they have been eating Alley Cat dry cat food. I tried looking on the internet for which cat foods are safe, but its so confusing. Does anyone know if Alley Cat is safe, or not?

Archie

In the short run, pretty much any dry food is safe. In the long run none of them are; they all cause chronic fluid imbalance that will eventually almost certainly ruin kittys kidneys and may trigger other serious health issues. Read this to learn why:http://www. catinfo. org

The only foods affected by the recall are wet food. Unless this changes there should be no problem feeding dry cat food to your cats.

Nelle

Kitten chow

Tyler

It was just the canned, and other wet foods that were affected, you should be fine

Anisa

Friskies

I have 4 cats as well ( 1 planned, 3 rescues). If u can afford it Royal Canin is "the diamonds of cat food). Easier on the pocket book is Max Cat made by the Nutro Company.....if u can avoid it dont buy your cat food at a grocery store, go to a pet store. Iams would be my third choice. All pet stores give free samples too. Good luck.

Menu Foods Recalls More Cat Food Made With ChemNutra Wheat GlutenNutro Products Recalls All Wet Pet Foods Regardless of DateApril 11, 2007Menu Foods and Nutro Products have expanded their recalls of pet food. Menu said its latest recall was prompted by reports from the US Food and Drug Administration about the presence of melamine in cans of cuts and gravy pet food produced in Menu Foods Canadian production facility, Menu Foods said it undertook an accounting of all recalled wheat gluten supplied by ChemNutra Inc. to Menu Foods in the United States. As the result of that review, Menu Foods said it has identified a single interplant transfer of the ChemNutra supplied wheat gluten, shipped from Menu Foods plant in Emporia, Kansas, to its plant in Streetsville, Ontario. This wheat gluten was subsequently used in the production of pet food in December, 2006 and January, 2007, which is being recalled by Menu Foods. The new varieties in the United States and Canada have been added to the recall list. The latest recall group is listed below, and a complete list of recalled products, including the new items can be reviewed at www. menufoods. com. Nutro Products said its ordering all its wet pet food product made with wheat gluten removed from store shelves -- regardless of production dates."Pet owners are fed up with confusing information regarding the Menu Foods recall," Dave Kravis, President and CEO of Nutro Products, stated in press release. "I had previously ordered a broader recall of affected products than what Menu Foods had suggested. Given this new information from Menu Foods, I have ordered all wet pet food products containing wheat gluten to be removed from store shelves. Our dry pet food is not made by Menu and remains unaffected by the recall."Kravis said his company has also suspended all shipments to retail stores of Nutros wet canned and pouch products that contain wheat gluten its able to confirm their safety. He asked customers with the following Nutro wet pet food products (which are made by Menu Foods and contain wheat gluten) regardless of "best by date," to immediately stop feeding the products to their pets:• All Cat Pouch Food Products;• Listed Cat 3.0 oz can products;• All Dog Pouch Food Products;• Listed Dog 12.5 oz Canned ProductsKravis said Menu Foods recall does not include Nutros dry pet food. Nutros dry pet foods are not produced by that Canadian company and do not contain wheat gluten. Nutros dry pet foods, biscuits and treats, are not involved in the recall and remain safe for pets to eat, Kravis said. Menu Foods, he added, only manufactures wet, canned and pouch products for Nutro. Recall expands to include pet food in CanadaTainted wheat gluten found in Ontario plant after prompts by FDAUpdated: 2 hours, 32 minutes agoWASHINGTON - The pet food recall expanded further Tuesday to include products made at a Canadian factory recently found to have used an ingredient tainted by an industrial chemicalMenu Foods previously had recalled only cat and dog food made at its plants in New Jersey and Kansas, saying they were its only facilities to have taken delivery of imported wheat gluten later found contaminated with melamine. However, Menu Foods discovered Monday that some of the tainted wheat gluten had made it to Canada. It was prompted to account for the ingredient by the U. S. Food and Drug Administration, which told the company that tests had detected the chemical in pet foods made at its Streetsville, Ontario, plant. Menu spokesman Sam Bornstein said the amount accounted for just 1 percent of the adulterated Chinese wheat gluten purchased by Menu Foods. It was used in pet foods made in December and January. Among the products covered by the expanded recall is Royal Canin Canada’s Medi-Cal Feline Dissolution Formula canned diet, made by Menu Foods and sold only through veterinarians. A single production lot contained the contaminated wheat gluten, the company said.“After being repeatedly reassured by Menu Foods, as reinforced by FDA public statements, that none of the contaminated wheat gluten had made its way to Canada, we were completely shocked to learn yesterday that this was not the case,” Xavier Unkovic, Royal Canin Canada’s chief executive officer, said in a statement. Menu Foods was the first of at least six companies to recall pet food and treats made with the tainted Chinese wheat gluten. It alone has recalled 100 brands of pet foods, sold throughout North America under its private and major labels. It posted Tuesday an updated list of recalled products on its Web site. The FDA has blocked wheat gluten imports from a Chinese company while it investigates how melamine could have contaminated the vegetable protein. This week, a large veterinary hospital chain says it recorded a 30 percent increase in kidney failure among cats during the three months that pet food contaminated with melamine was sold. Those results were reported Monday by Banfield, The Pet Hospital, based upon an analysis of records collected by its more than 615 veterinary clinics. The analysis suggests that out of every 10,000 cats and dogs seen in Banfield clinics, three developed kidney failure during the time pet food contaminated with melamine, a chemical used to make plastic kitchenware, countertops, fertilizers and flame retardants, was on the market. The chemical appears to have been more toxic to cats than to dogs.

Chicken dried cat food is safe and settling on cats stomachs no matter their age. anything with beef can be very rich for some cats as they age and make them sick.

I wont feed dry food, but if I did, I would only choose one from this list. Evo would be my first choice, followed by Wellness new grainless variety, or Natures Variety Raw Instincts, which is also grainless.
