How can i keep my dog from eating cat food?

Daria

I have had my cat for three years. Yesterday I took in a dog to keep him from going to the pound. He is well behaved and trained, but he likes to eat the cat food. His bowl is full of his own food, but he wont hardly touch it. Is there something I could do to keep him out of the cat food?

Kendall

Yes, put the cat food up out of reach. Then, only feed the cat and the dog at an actual feeding time. Leaving food out for animals is not really that healthy. Once the cat food is out of reach (really out of reach), the dog might be more willing to eat his own food. If that does not help, you might try adding a little bit of canned dog food with the dry, into his food bowl and mix a little water. Gradually decrease the canned until it is just dry food mixed with a little water. Our dogs have always eaten their food with a little water added. Congratulations on saving the dog. Also have him checked for worms.

Umm, put up the cat food. its a dog, its food driven. hes gonna wanna eat.

Jessia

Pick up the cat food? Elevate it to a counter or somewhere the cat can go but the dog cant.

Nilda

Really the best thing to keep the dog out of the cat food is raise the cat food out of the dogs reach. All dogs prefer cat food to their own. Good Luck!

I had the same problem... My Solution was to put the cat food bowl somewhere elevated, so i put the cat food up on the dining room table, when we wanted to eat i took the bowl off and wiped the table then it was perfectly knew, if you are uncomfortable with that, then you can also compromise and put the dish somewhere else elevated. Hope that helped you

Cat food is much more flavorful than dog food, its not really their fault. Put the cat food up high.

My dog would do that as well, now she is use to when i tell her to stop, or no, and i do it out loud, she will stop eating the cat food, she still sometimes out of the blue goes for the cat food, but as soon as i see her, i yell no lady, thats her name lady, and she will stop eating it, ive never hit her, or anything like that, but she kinda knows that when i say no, it means no

Melba

Feed the cat on a table??

Clementina

The best solution seems to be putting cat food somewhere out of reach of dog. You may also trying feeding the dog first so hes full when the cat eats.

Karie

Put the cat food where he cant get it.
