How much cat food should cats who are almost a year old be eating?

Randi

I have two kittens who are a year old in a few weeks. I also have a fifteen-year old cat. I give them about a half a can of wet food three times a day, and keep their bowl full of dry to eat when they want. Is this too much? One of them is starting to get a little chubby, but is not really fat or obese.

The one-year-olds should eat more than the 15-year-old. Give them canned food two times a day and dry food when they want. They need to chew on the dry food to keep teeth strong.

That is ALOT of food to be feeding these kittys. I feed my 3y/o cat half a can once daily, thats enough for her and she is a healthy weight. I would recommend feeding them once daily with wet food and keep there bowl full of dry food. Although you might need to cut there food down gradually, I think it would be the best option. It will also leave you a few more dollars in your pocket :)

My cat became a fatty and the vet recommended I feed Him 1/2 Cup of dry food in the morning and 1/2 cup of dry food in the evening. Wet food is more of a treat anyway.

Some cats will only eat when they are hungry where others may overindulge. To avoid this, mix some dry with their wet instead of leaving thr dry down all the time. I feed my cats twice a day - half a cup of food.

January

My cat eats loads one day and then might not eat anything the day after. He is a big cat too, and by big I mean not fat, he is very well muscled. He weighs almost 14 pounds.

Cats should only eat 2times a day not 3 lol.. 1can in the mording one at night

Get rid of the dry and give them all the canned (non gravy) they want Nutrition since there are so many bad things out there is very important to your cat’s healthContrary to what you may have heard; dry foods are not a great thing to feed a cat. Please read the label on what you are feeding? What are the ingredients? Do you know what they mean? Is the first ingredient a muscle meat like chicken or meal or other things? http://www. catinfo. org/#Learn_How_To_Rea…http://iml. jou. ufl. edu/projects/Spring04…Dry foods are the number 1 cause of diabetes in cats as well as being a huge contributing factor to kidney disease, obesity, crystals, u. t.i’s, constipation, and a host of other problems. Male cats are especially prone to blockagesfrom dry food. Food allergies are very common when feeding dry foods. Rashes, scabs behind the tail and on the chin are all symptoms The problems associated with Dry food is that they are loaded with grains and carbohydrates which many cats (carnivores) cannot process. ( Have a fat cat?)Also, Most of the moisture a cat needs is suppose to be in the food but in Dry, 95% of it is zapped out of dry foods in the processing. Another thing, most use horrible ingredients and dont use a muscle meat as the primary ingredient and use vegetable based protein versus animal. Not good for an animal that has to eat meat to survive. http://www. catinfo. org/#My_Cat_is_Doing_…You want to pick a canned food w/o gravy (gravy=carbs) that uses a muscle meat as the first ingredient and doesnt have corn at least in the first 3 ingredients if at all. THE BEST CAT FOODS CONTAIN NO GRAINS NO BYPRODUCTS Cats are meat eaters not cereal or rice eaters Fancy feast is a middle grade food with 9lives, friskies whiskas lower grade canned and wellness and merrick upper grade human quality foods. I would rather feed a middle grade canned food then the top of the line dry food. Also, dry food is not proven to be better for teeth. Does a hard pretzel clean your teeth or do pieces of it get stuck? http://www. felinefuture. com/nutrition/bp… Please read about cat nutrition. http://www. catinfo. org/ http://www. catinfo. org/feline_obesity. ht… http://maxshouse. com/feline_nutrition. ht… Vetinarian diets The reason your vet thinks so highly of the pet food they sell probably has more to do with money than nutrition. In vet school, the only classes offered on nutrition usually last a few weeks, and are taught by representatives from the pet food companies. Vet students may also receive free food for their own dogs and cats at home. They could get an Iams notebook, a Purina purse and some free pizza. http://iml. jou. ufl. edu/projects/Spring04…Nutritional Education Program website page for the American College of Veterinary Nutrition. Cats have a high matabalizm. odd isnt it considering they sleep over half there life away. cats in the wild need more to eat. but if yours are indoor cats then they need less. but that all depends on the food. and never forget they like us needs lots of calcium. and that wet food doesnt has much in it. i raise dogs "ratt terrors" and from the time the mother is impregnated till bout 3 weeks after pups are fully wined. i give her normal calcium pills crushed up in her foods. then the pups for up to a year with it in there foods. that is if i can keep moma out of it. tho they did research and discovered that cat and dog foods are more nutritional than the foods we eat it still causes diarrhea. but with the dry with it your doing well. cats unlike dogs are finicky eaters. but with an abundant food they can become more friendly with there food dish. and if they are left alone. just like people they will eat out of boredom. and drastically cutting back on there food will ai in there shedding. animals that live indoors wont shed as well. since it is always a nice temp it throws there internal clock off. i shave my dogs just before winter and again just after. same with my cats. as a child i raised Persians. big fluffy cats. and if they dont shed properly they will lick themselves into death literally. just like penguins. so even with short hair it is good to trim them. but will take some patience to get the animal to not fear the reaper. and i hope you know how to squeeze the anal sacks. this is important for dogs more than cats. so if you see the cats dragging there asses you will need to learn how or go to the vet. good luck and i hope you have a long well life with your feline pals.
