Im ashamed to admit but in the last few months (due to a combination of human illness, time, and budget constraints) weve been feeding our sweet feline friends only dry food (Science Diet). So, we are planning to return to an exclusively wet food diet (weve tried raw, which I know is best, but they wont go for it and honestly, as a 2 x full-time student household with an infant, its not sustainable.) Let me share with you what I have learned about feline nutrition to help you make an informed decision on what diet you should feed your cat. Many brands of manufactured cat foods claiming to be "healthy" really are not. In fact they are made of the lowest ingredients possible. Im not saying that a cat cant live off them... just the same as you could live off hot dogs and Mac and cheese forever, but better choices can and should be made for your feline friends. I would not venture to say that any manufactured food is "best" for a cat but a grain free organic wet food would be a good start. Feeding canned is certainly better than feeding dry in all cases. Cats were never meant to eat dry food, also known as cereals or kibble. We, humans, make them eat it for convenience to us. It has nothing to do with them or their nutritional needs. Its completely species inappropriate. All small domestic cats descended from desert cats. In the wild, desert cats derive their entire liquid intake from their prey. They do not have a thirst mechanism because they dont need it when eating a species appropriate diet. They get all they need from what they eat. Additionally water was usually not available to them in their desert climate. So they do not often drink water. Regular ol house cats have descended from those same wild desert cats. So in a home environment, your kitty does not get the moisture it needs from dry food and it’s almost always in a constant state of dehydration. Water fountains are encouraged to TRY to get your cat to drink more and your kitty may even enjoy it, but it will never meet its water intake needs drinking from a bowl. Deadly feline illnesses such as diabetes, kidney failure, obesity, allergies, Irritable Bowel Disease (IBD), bladder stones, kidney stones, urinary tract blockages and Urinary Tract Infections (FLUTD), with and without deadly crystals run rampant these days. Cats are not taking in enough water to stave them off. Proper water intake through a species appropriate diet alone can prevent most of these conditions. Overall, wet is all around better for any cats diet, be it canned or Raw and they should never be fed dry cereal kibble if we wish to most closely match their wild nutritional and dietary needs. Kibble meets our needs… not our cats. It is also bogus that kibble cleans teeth. DRY FOOD DOES NOT CLEAN TEETH. Its an old myth that has been scientifically disproved for years, but old-school vets drilled it into peoples heads for so long (and sadly still do) that people still believe it. Cats can not “chew”. They do not have flat “chewing” teeth. Their molars are not for grinding food. They have meat ripping pointy carnivorous teeth. You may see them “crunch” a piece of food once to crack and break it… but they are absolutely unable to chew a hard piece of food. Want your cat to have clean teeth? Give them an appropriately sized raw bone to chew on. :o)I personally feed a Raw Meat and Bones based diet to my cats and they are very healthy on it. I HIGHLY recommend it. Once I got the hang of it and felt comfortable with it its a snap to prepare. Its something you might want to consider someday. The ingredients also should NOT include any by-products or animal digest whatsoever. Those are disgusting left over animal parts that are scraped off the filthy floors of meat and poultry plants. They should just go into the trash but they put them into pet food instead. EW!!!! Also make sure there are no artificial colors or flavors. And make sure there is no BHA and BHT used preservatives. If you are talking about a moist food diet, those are being generally discontinued. The harsh use of chemicals and preservatives in them to keep them from spoiling was really bad for cats. On pets. ca, a very reputable site with very smart users, one of them said that if you feed your cat a diet of those kinds of soft dry foods, you can cut your cats life expectancy in half. Well, your first choice of action is to have a visit to your local vet, just to be sure that there isnt anything wrong with him health-wise. Better to be safe then sorry, yeah? He IS 7 after all and that means he is considered a senior cat, which means more health troubles, especially teeth wise. If he has a loose or sore tooth, he wont bother trying to eat the hard, crunchy cat food and will instead resort to softer foods. And if he was eating cat food before and suddenly has stopped, there could be something wrong. Also, You didnt specify whether you have tried feeding him wet food. If you havent, I suggest Fancy Feast - Seafood Medley. Not the best kind, I know, but the seafood feast is in loaf style and it is quite fishy smelling. I dont suggest sliced, shaved or gravy style though. Most of the cats Ive known just lick the gravy. Until you can get him to the vet, I suggest that putting him up (with litter box, food and water) in a separate room for a couple days to monitor him would be best. Because honestly, do you watch him 24 hrs a day? Of course not.. You have to sleep sometime, right? Cats are nocturnal. Out in the wild, they hunt and eat at night, which is also true for household cats. So maybe he IS eating, but you just havent been able to catch him in the act. And if you dont see that he tried to eat, then a vet visit is needed. But I must remind you that people and dog food, even though it may seem tantalizing to a cat, isnt as good as cat food. It really is unhealthy for them to eat the others food. The fat and protein contents of dog food and cat food are very different becuase the fat and protein NEEDS of cats vs dogs are very (VERY!) different. They "can" eat it but it will mean that they arent getting the right nutrients for proper health. Ultimately they will be more prone to digestive upsets, illness and other problems. Try feeding them in seperate rooms. This shouldnt be a problem if you are feeding them twice a day as is generally recommended by most veterinarians rather than "free choice" food. Put the food down and pick it up again in 15 minutes. That evening do it again. If they are used to being able to eat whenever they want you might actually be picking up food uneaten. That is OK! They will soon understand to eat their full portion when its available. It is not only healthier for them but it prevents overeating (a SERIOUS medical condition that many pets suffer from) and allows you to better track changes in mood and behaviour. If you "think" your cat might not be eating as much you wont really be able to be SURE right now becuase maybe the dog ate some, or you cant remember when you last refilled the bowl, etc. By serving measured portions twice a day you can easily tell - You put 1 C of food in the bowl that morning and he usually finishes it all but today he didnt - something is wrong. :-) Easier for you, easier for them AND everyone will be eating THEIR food for proper health and nutrition. No, its not good for the dog or the cat. Dog food is specifically formulated to meet at dogs dietary needs, and cat is specifically made for cats. We solve this problem in my house by having the cats food up high where the dog cant reach, and the dogs only get 10 minutes to eat, and if they dont eat it right away it gets picked up (we feed the dogs 2 times a day). Dogs figure this out quickly, and eat when they are fed unless they truly arent hungry.

The solution to my cats problem (and he did not have to have surgery) was a raw meat diet. There are many ways to do that and you can join a Yahoo group called Holisticat for recipes and support in making the switch to a new food. The normal pH for a cats urine is slightly acidic. A dry food diet or one with methionine added (the vet prescription foods) does not always work. The raw meat worked for my kitty and it will keep the urine at the correct balance. My cat never had a problem again.

Science Diet S/D is what you need to start him on then after about 2-4mths ween him onto Science Diet C/D-S, most cats to rather well on this diet. Some cats will always have problems and a diet may not help. Purina also has came out with prescription diets Purina UR is a good food it comes in hard and moist bites, sometimes after surgeries you need a more appetizing food and UR moist bites seem to go over pretty well. If this is a high grade food she may be getting all the nutrients, but nutrients alone is not what makes a healthy diet. My cat used to be the same, and I decided to test it. She refused it until I made it the ONLY option (closed her into the house for this so she had no chance of getting any food elsewhere). She started eating wet food, little by little. Now she gets wet in the morning and evening, and kibbles thorugh the day to nibble on. I cannot tell you what a difference it makes - to everything about her, shes more loving and her coat is in even better condition than it was. Now, one factor that I was worried about is urinary crystals, I want to avoid that for all I am worth, and by giving dry food youre increasing the chances of that every day. So she can hate me for it all she likes, but wet food now is part of her diet, and there has not been one crystal.

The plastic will absorb cat food odors, and those could be transferred to any food that is put into the bowl. So from a safety issue, there will be none. But from a taste standpoint, a lot will depend on what food is put into the Tupperware container.

As long as you wash it thoroughly with dishsoap and water beforehand and you dont have a problem with its previous use, I dont see why not.

It depends. If youre using it to feed a baby from or something, I wouldnt lol. Plastic tends to hold odors, but cat food is pretty safe so I dont think it would be an issue at all to use it for something else.

About 3 years ago my cat was diagnosed with urinal tract infection, the vet successfully cured him, and strictly stated that I should not feed him with any other cat food than "Urinary S/O". Which is very expensive compared to regular commercial cat foods. At the moment im short of money, I still could by that food, but I need the money for other things. So how big is the risk that my cat will get sick again if I feed him with regular cat food, for lets say a month.

Most cats dealing with struvite crystals (FLUTD) do well on a high protein, low carb, and grain free wet food diet. You many want to look into these while switching food. I am uncomfortable with giving out brand names when it comes to cats with special dietary needs as a result of certain medical conditions. Well, I cant imagine that your vet would have told you you have to feed your cat that if you didnt really have to. Im sure its much cheaper to buy the RX cat food for one month as opposed to paying vet bills to fix the problem later. Some Petsmarts and other stores sell Friskies canned food for urinary problems. Have you looked into that? Im not sure how it compares to other foods, but I know people who successfully use it.

I know what you mean about the expense but there are some "regular" foods now that are for kidney/urinary issues and they are less expensive. In fact my cat just passed away from kidney failure and before she left me I switched food and noticed there is an unbelieveable amount of kidney products out there. I would visit the pet store and look around. Maybe you could sort of feed your cat half and half for a month. Like mix it? I dont know. But I think the other person has a point, it would be less expensive to get the food than pay vet bills later on. Good luck.

He can have the same problem or worse and block again. I know what you are going thru as my one Ocicat had to stay on the Royal Canin for Urinary SO in the dry. However, we also increased in feeding him quality canned food in chicken, beef, lamb (Wellness, Blue Buffalo mainly).Unfortunately there is no guarantee that staying on this food will prevent them from blocking again. We lost our boy due to another UTI where he DID block (we had added raw chicken and I think that may have trigger it). But for almost two years on the RC and the quality canned food he had NO problems. Stick with the special dry food (if its the Science Diet, switch it to the Royal Canin) and add in quality canned food to help stretch it.

Well yeah it is ok. as long as none of them are throwing up then yeah it is fine. My cat loves to eat human food like poptarts, ice cream, beef jerky, and chocolate but not so much of it.

Actually, according to my mothers veterinarian, and Mom wont lie to save her life, dog food, though not the exact nutritional ideal, will do no harm to a cat if not its only food type.......BUT, Cat Food is bad for dogs, can cause (kidney?) major organ failure if allowed to occur too often. I forget exactly WHAT causes death in worst case examples, which organ for certain, but if memory serves its kidneys. Might want to elevate the kitty chow, if you check this out with any vet via phone, they should gladly confirm\refute this info. I trust my mother, and MY cats food is in a cat carrier, at the back wall, so puppies cannot access the bowl. Happy researching!!

It is okay if they have a small bite and arent just eating the opposite food. The only difference between cat food and dog food is that they arent nutritionally balanced for the other kind of animal. If you are really concerned put you cat food on a high place where the dog cant get it and you shouldnt have issues.

I would say no it is not okay but if it is once in a while it shouldnt do any harm. I guess it would be hard for you to seperate their food but it is amazing the dogs dont attack the cats! The cat food has nutrients especially for the digestive system and life style of the cat. that is also why there are so many different types like for kittens, adult cats, senior cats and also for different medicat needs like hairball formula and urinary tract formula. I dont own a dog but i have seen a DVD recently about cat care.

Cats need Taurine in there diet. Most dog foods do not have this essencial nutrient as it is not eassential for dogs-although it is found in some natural dog foods. I would not feed my dog natural dog food as mostnatural dog food contain Garlic-which is toxic to DogsCats! I always carefully check the ingrediance on cat food too. Note; dont feed your cat Kangroo meat-Kangraoo feed often to your cats causes kidney failure. So the answer is no-you can not feed your cat, dog food!

However, cats require a food with higher protein content than dogs do, so if your cats are eating too much dog food then they might not be getting the necessary protein requirements and if dogs eat cat food too much then theyre getting too much protein, so its best if you seperate their food

I heard from a vet that if a cat eats dog food they will eventually go blind. My dogs love cat food...but I figure that they have separte types of food for a reason. Stick to the basics I suppose.

Its ok for them to nibble as long as it doesnt cause diarrhea or vomit. Cats have to have very specific things in thier diets, taurine is one of those things, if a cat only eats dog food it can lose its sight. I think its fine as long as the cat is eating mostly cat food.

Its ok. My little dog loved cat food. I also had to keep his weight off, so I used to feed him a Whiskers pouch every night which was 85grams. There is supposed to be different vitamins for different animals, but I dont believe that.
