How safe is cat food for dogs?

Britteny

I have a Pekingnese that will be 16 in April. I have trouble giving him medicine. He can be persnickery with dog food and sometimes I waste medicine trying to give it to him in his dog food. He will take it quite readily in cat food. For some reason he loves cat food but the cats really could care less about dog food. Will too much cat food cause harm? I know it can lead to diarrhea.

Cat food tends to have a higher protein content and less filler than dog food. A cats protein and fat needs are greater than your dogs, so cats should not be fed dog food as a main meal. Giving your dog a little cat food (like a tablespoon or two) to get him to take medicine is okay. Feed him dog food for his main meals.

It seems cat food is higher in protein than dog food, and it contains more fat, but its not bad - its just food after all. Good luck with your Pekingnese!
