And before you give me the lecture may I just say: I live in a small town rural area, even the wal mart is is a 40 minute drive, and to get to a petco or petsmart is about 2 hours one way so I cant get there to buy food for my cat. So this is my question: what is the best kind of wet cat food you can buy at wal mart?
Ingrid
Holly, Good moist cat food and Walmart is an oxymoron. I wholeheartedly agree with the folks who have suggested getting your catfood online. There is a much larger variety of excellent foods available that way. I shop Petfooddirect for just about all of my cats needs. As someone else mentioned the 18-22% discount offers that they make once you are "in" their system usually covers shipping and often even part of the food. Just do a search online to find the link. We use Wellness turkey, chicken, chicken and beef and our cats love it. There is no grain in their product, and the meat is 100% human grade and no meat by-products at all. Hope this helps! Id buy a good brand without fillers or meals or by-products on line....you can have anything shipped to you for a small fee sometimes for free if you are going to be a repeat orderer.....Go on line to the Pet Smart site and see if you can use a credit card and order and have it delivered...There are no foods suitable for the devil at Walmart....

If you want the best: fancy feastcheaper (79 cents): Whiskas and Friskies

I cant find whats available there. I do know they sell Special Kitty because Ive heard people talk about it. I suspect they sell many of the same brands you would find at the grocery store. So with that in mind, why not just buy from your local grocery store? True, you wont find great food but youll save yourself a trip. Have you considered buying online? Obviously youll have to deal with shipping costs, but perhaps you can offset that somehow. www. petfooddirect. com is one used by many. Otherwise, heres my blog on how to identify a good food. You wont find anything great at either of those places, but you can hopefully avoid some of the worst. CHOOSING THE BEST CAT FOOD Oct 18, 07 11:48 PMfor everyone If you do nothing else, read this: http://www. api4animals. org/facts. php? p=3… This is an eye-opening article. It covers EVERYTHING youd ever want to know about the cat food industry from a-z. And I mean everything! Im attempting to summarize some of it below, but you really need to read the whole thing! The least you should know:The use of "All" and "100%" are reserved for foods that contain only one ingredient. Dinners, recipes, platters, entrees and formulas - cat foods using these names may have less of the named ingredient than youd expect it to."With" means that theres at least 3% of that item by weight in the product."Flavor" means that theres just enough of an ingredient to provide a discernable flavor. Ingredients are listed first by WEIGHT. While we do recommend getting foods that have meat listed first, this doesnt mean that something has more meat than anything else. Take a cup of chicken and a cup of wheat. These are equal amounts but the chicken will weigh more, so it would appear first. But youve got just as much wheat as chicken! When reading labels, keep in mind that you must convert the given numbers to dry matter basis. What this ultimately means is that a wet food claiming 10% protein actually has MORE protein than a dry food claiming 30% protein. Did you know that rendered animal fat is sprayed on dry cat food to make it taste better? Did you know that rendering means whole animals are boiled to reduce them down to fat? And did you know that these rendered animals may have been laying around for days before being carted off to the rendering plant? In addition, I gathered the below info from a book I recently checked out from the library: Whole Health for Happy Cats: A Guide to Keeping Your Cat Naturally Healthy, Happy, and Well-Fed (Quarry Book) :: Sandy Arora. So this information can be verified, at least as to the fact that someone actually said this. Below is a list of ingredients to avoid. But before looking at this list, please keep in mind that while it would be best to feed foods that dont contain any of these questionable ingredients, you must also consider the quantity in which theyre used, and the pros and cons of feeding an otherwise good food with one questionable ingredient when your only choices are that or something completely crappy. Avoid:The preservatives BHA, BHT and Ethoxyquin. BHA and BHT are carcinogens. Ethoxyquin is a rubber preservative and pesticide. Foods that contain Rosemary (may be used as a preservative) shouldnt be served more than 2-3 times per week. Carrageenan. This is a food thickener that can cause ulcerative colitis and other stomach problems. However, this ingredient is used in the new EVO canned products (95% meat) (among other products), and the advice Ive received is that you have to weigh the overall benefits of the great food against a small amount of this ingredient which might cause digestive upsets. If youre faced with the choice of carageenan or an inferior quality food, go with the carrageenan. The same is true for GARLIC which is (still) present in Wellness. Mannitol, Xylitol and Sorbitol: Can cause severe digestive upset and possibly kidney problems. Potassium Sorbate: Can irritate skin and eyes. Propylene Glycol: Can cause heinz body anemia, a type of damage to red blood cells. Sodium Benzoate: Can adversely affect the central nervous system and cause allergic reactions as well as stomach irritations. Propyl Gallate Artificial colors. Cats dont care what color their food is! There is no feline Iron Chef who will turn up her nose due to bad presentation! Byproducts and meal. Byproducts arent bad per se, but it would be NICE to know which ones. They can be anything from liver (good) to beaks and feet. If theyre not named, dont feed them. Any form of corn, wheat or soy. Corn is the worst of these and may ultimately lead to diabetes. Avoid special labels such as "indoor" "senior" or "light". These foods may contain acidifying agents, excessive fiber, and inadequate fats that will result in skin and coat problems. Dont buy your food at the grocery store - go to an independently owned pet store or a chain store if they carry good brands. Butylated hydroxyamisole. Butylated hydroxytoluene. Get:Products containing MEAT, and its best if its listed first. Products that are AAFCO certified to be complete. This doesnt mean the food is good, it just means its balanced. Foods that dont have this or that arent balanced arent bad necessarily, but then they should perhaps only be used for supplemental feeding. As you can see, its more about avoiding things than looking for things. Yes, look for meat as the first ingredient, and it should be balanced for daily feeding (unless you plan to supplement). But its mostly about what you should NOT see on the label!

Hi Holly, Honestly, Wal-Mart really isnt a place to find the "best" cat food. Your may want to bite the bullet and order online. Canned food will cost more to ship but Im sure youll agree, your cat is worth it! Whatever you decide, please make sure that the wet food you buy is NOT on any of the recall lists.
Catrina
Dont shop at Mall-Wart. I agree that theres is no such thing as "best" there. Maybe a local pet store or vet sells the kitty food you want.

Fancy Feast.

The solution is to buy online. Try www. petfoddirect. com. The first order will get you a 5% off coupon. Once youve placed an order, you get monthly e-coupons good for 13-22% off your order, which more than compensates for the shipping. Other sources of good foods: some grocery stores now carry Newmans Own (excellent!). If you have a health food store or organic grocery store nearby you can get some of the better brand there as well, but if youre in a really small town that might not be an option. Think of the gas money youd save by shopping online...

I really cant imagine anything but, fancy feast which I feed my cats. I buy it at walmart by a little case of 24 cans. I usually get the chicken assortment. The fishy ones can be a problem if they have a hair ball and throw up. Yuk. So stick with the chicken or turkey
Kenna
Our cat likes Friskies Prime Fillets, Chick., Beef or Turkey. Avoid fish or fish meal (dry food) it can contribute to UTI.

The best you can get at walart is soething like fancy feast no gravy or juices. They are a medium grade food. What makes it the best there is that the first ingrediant is a, muscle meat lie chicken instead of meal or liver. Ideally the best canned foods have little or no grains Good for you for feeding canned as there is no reason dry should be fed
Anh
Actually, there are several flavours of fancy feast that do not contain wheat, corn, rice or soy. They will have some muscle meat and some biproducts. These are perfectly acceptable and available at Walmart. Just dont buy a lot of fish-based flavours. www. catinfo. org

Actually can is not the best way to go unless your cat is missing teeth and cannot chew dry food. dry food has the same nutrients as canned/pouch food. but also helps cleans the cats teeth as it scrapes against them. and is usaully healthier all around. can food also goes bad if left out for an hour ( my vet told me that) if youre going to walmart then i would suggest purina..its cheaper than say iams, but still a good brand name, purina indoor is what i use. also look online with a search engine for cat freebies sometimes you can get coupons or free samples with well known companies..and watch the ads in the paper..you are aware that walmart will accept another retail ad as long as its not a gimmick price (buy one get free,50 % off, ect).also dont buy a large bag of food if you only have one cat. large bags of any animal food that stays open all the time tends to lose its nutritional value after awhile
