What is the best cat food to feed hedgehogs?

Adria

Im getting a baby hedgehog next friday (from a breeder) and i wanted to know the best cat food to feed hedgehogs.

Start out by getting whatever food your breeder is currently using. You will want to use this initially to reduce the stress of going to a new home. Plus you will also need it while you transition your hedgehog to a new diet. This will also help prevent your hedgehog from fasting due to a sudden change in diet. As to which food to use, a lot of it is personal preference and what is available to use. The basic rule that most of us go by is to use a high quality cat food that is low in fat. You can find a two lists of foods that some of us use at the link below:http://www. chins-n-hedgies. com/forums/fo…Most hedgehog foods are crap. They are made from poor ingredients (fillers and preservatives) or are just completely inappropriate. Pretty Pets, Browns, Vitakraft, etc are all not recommended. Because of the lack of good hedgehog foods available in pet stores, we tend to look at higher quality cat foods. Check out the link I gave you above for foods that people recommend. You may also want to post your question on one of the hedgehog web forums to see which foods people do use, or to post one that you are considering for opinions. A couple of great forums are http://www. chins-n-hedgies. com or http://www. hedgehogcentral. com. You may also want to check out these forums for any questions you may have after you get your new baby. Good luck with your new hedgehog!

You want one with more than 30% protein and less than 10% fat, and based on chicken, not fish. Mine get a mixture of Science Plan, Purina One and Pets at Home. ETA: Snickers is a f**king moron, hedgehogs are insectivores, feeding them rodent food can kill them. Oh, and DONT give your hedgehog milk either, they do not digest lactose very well!

Clemente

No not cat food CAT food is for CATS. Get some gunnie pig food or some other rodent food its better than cat food any way its a higher chance of it eating rodent food

Chester

Thats so funny, I only found out the other day that they love that stuff. We have a hedgehog at bottom of our garden and we buy a cheapish cat food for our cats ( we are not in the whiskas catagory) but they will eat any cat food and ALL of it. they like milk too ha

Claretta

We feed ours purina when we run out of hedgehog food. Hedgehog food can be found in some pet stores and on the net.

Missy

Well, its not the greatest idea to give a hedgehog cat food. You should order specialized hedgehog food. But, if you cant get hedgehog food, any type of hard cat food that is low in fat and high in protien is good for the little hedgie. :-)

I have used purina but now i use hedgehog food they sell it at petsmart and petco its made for them and is the same price

Ive got kitten chow :) my hedgehog loves it however eventually when they start to get older and their metabolism slows down you will want to start finding specially made hedgehog diet munchies to keep your hedgehog alive and well :)

Personally, I think buying the commercial hedgehog food is healthier for your hedgehog. My hedgehog eats "Pretty Pets Hedgehog Food" and has had no dietary problems. Also, I dont feed her my cats food because it is said to cause liver problems, and has more fat in it, making it easier for your hedgehog to become overweight.
