Is it ok to feed a dog cat food?

Delila

My dog will not eat her dry dog food unless I am watching over her. She would rather steal food from the cats dish. Is it ok to feed a dog cat food? All dogs seem to like it better than dog food. I have bought different brands of food but she still does not want to eat it. She wouldent even eat Nutro (the best brand you can buy) I dont want to feed her any thing cheap that has corn as the main ingredient. I dont want to feed her canned dog food because she has long white hair will get it all over herself. Any suggestions?

Cat food as a regular diet is hard on a dogs kidneys,,produces too much uric acid for a dog...It is fine as a training treat, or a stolen mouthfull now and then..If you switch to a premium kibble..such as Solid Gold, which is fish based..he will be happy and healthy..Premium kibbles actually are cheaper to feed than store brands..they cost more per bag, but much less per month..and save on vet bills, especially in their old age..Other great kibbles are Canidae, Wellness, Innova, Natural Balance, and Wysong...all are much tastier than grocery store or department store brands...

Kellie

Try good old Gainsburgers!

Crystal

I wouldnt do it on a regular basis. my dogs get in my cats food all the time. I just wouldnt feed a dog cat food though

You should not feed your dog cat food, it ruins their taste buds plus then they wont eat dog food. I have 2 dogs and 2 cats and i put the cat food up where the dogs cannot get it but the cats can.

Elliot

Temporarily yes. Dogs need different nutrients than cats, so long term no. The real problem is that your dog has an alterior motive for eating the cats food that needs to be addressed. It isnt that he doesnt like the dog food either - so dont change it. The dog probably doesnt want the cat eating anything at all, so he eats her food. You need to teach the dog to not eat the cats food by training him or remove the cats food to a location that the dog cannot access. Dont let your dog eat the cats food for long. If he eats both he will get fat and if he only eats the cats food he will start loosing mass, bone and muscle.

Catfood is not a good main source of food for dogs. The two animals have very different nutritional needs and health problems can come up such as diabetes, kidney troubles, urinary tract infections, etc. Try mixing a little wet food with the dry food, thats what I found to work best with my dog. Good luck!

Karrie

Sorry, I dont have an answer, but I have the same problem except my dog likes my birds food and wont eat her dry food no matter what I mix with it.

Bennett

If it cheaper then dog food

Saturnina

It probably wont hurt, but cat food is formulated for cats, not dogs. Try mixing a little cat food with the dog food. Also, it will be a good idea to put away the cat food at dog feeding time. When the dog learns that dog food is what she gets, she will eat it.

Dogs have a thing for cat food! and your dog refusing to eat its own food is normal for a spoiled doggy I know I have 2....what ended up happening is we just got rid of the cat food...the cat eats the dog food, right out of their dish! happy to share it...now. ha ha ha it will take about a week for the dog to come around, but they evenualy get over themselves.

Julia

Cat food is made for cats requirements and dog food for dogs requirements. My breeder said not to let the pup eat cat food as it will give him diarrhea. Dogs seem to want to eat what the other guy has. I mix a little bit of canned dog food in with his kibble and he seems to like it better. Good Luck.

Anita

No. you feed a dog dog food and a cat cat food.

Farah

NO

Camelia

Sure! I eat it all the time. Deeeelicious!

Eulah

Cat food has been created to meet a cats sensitive nurtient intake, as well as dog food. If you feed the wrong food your dog will not get all the nutirnets she requires! If she wont eat the dry can you try to mix a small amount of canned food in? Maybe thatll intice her to eat, once shes eating the canned mixed with the kibble slowly decrease the amount of canned until shes eating just dry kibble. I know Iams has a gravy you can add to the food, that might work too! Good luck!

Elenore

Schlongy is a little crass, but he has the right idea. Dogs need different nutrients than cats. They also need different textures for dental health. Your dog is spoiled. Take away its access to the cat food and within 24 hours the dog will eat whatever you feed it.

Charita

Cat food is made for cats, to help your dog eat her dry food I suggest mixing in the grease from any cooked meats, it will help make the dog more prone to eating her dry food.

Claribel

It is okay to feed your dog cat food once in a while, best bet is to put you cat food on high ground where your dog can not get to it

My dogs vet said that dogs love cat food because it is high in sugar. It is apparently not good for them to eat it. Like another responder said, it can cause them to have urinary tract infections. Maybe its the sugar, but my dog is obsessed with cat food - searching for the cats bowl with the hope of getting a bite of cat food is probably her reason for living... I would stop allowing the dog to eat cat food asap before she turns into a nut like mine. If she cant get ahold of any cat food and her dog food is accessible, she will eat it.

Lonna

No, I worked with a vet and it will cause gastric problems so only feed dog food. Dogs will eat even rocks. You must watch them all the time :)Based on her age and size, Id say put her on Pro-Plan or Science Diet. You can find the one that is right for her. We all have different tastes and so do dogs:)

Brad

In the long term, it is bad for your dog because they need the nutrition that comes from dog food. If she doesnt like her dog food, try a different kind!

Carlita

Dry food is ugly. You should mix it with soft food like a tin content or whatever you dog likes. There is no difference between dog and food, it is just marketing trick. Cats though prefer fishy food while dogs prefer meaty and marrow. Ideally, make an agreement with your local butcher to supply you with the bits he throw away and the marrow bones. this will be cheaper and healthier for your dog. Do nor ever give a dog or a cat raw meat with blood still in. Always boil or cook and cool the meat before given it to the animals. Also both animal will love a treat of liver, not pig liver, fry a little to remove the blood first. Liver is excellent for their diet.

Elmer

Cat food is not good for dogs. It is to rich for them and makes them sick. As a pet owner it is one of the responsibilities to make sure your pet eats. If you have to stand there with her to get her to eat do it. We have to do that with our German Shepherd. Its a pain but whatever it takes to keep them healthy and happy....

Maren

I would say no. im not 100% sure about that, but what i do know is that dog food is meant for dogs and cat food is meant for cats.

Crystal

NO! there is something in cat food that dogs are NOT suppose to have keep the cat food up and away from your dog. He will eventually eat when he is hungry. I too feed my dogs Nutro Natural is is good for there skin, fur, and keeps their stools hard.

Carmelo

NO IT IS NOT OK it messes with their stomach and gives the diarrhea
