Where can i find a quality cat food for cats with food allergies?

Laurie

My cat recently began losing all his fur and was diagnosed with food allergies after eating the same food his entire life (7 years) Now I need to find a quality food that is also economical.....

Try switching your cat to a canned food that is all meat. Its quite likely that the grains in the dry food you were feeding have sensitized your cat to allergies. Its essentially poisonous to your cat. You should also look for a different protein source (rabbit is a good one) as unlike dogs, cats can become allergic to a protein source. As a carnivore, their primary food source needs to be protein. So look for a meat canned (or raw) food that doesnt have any grain, fruit or vegetable fillers.

What is he allergic to? We feed our cats By Nature, it has no corn, no wheat, and no soy and is fairly inexpensive. We get ours at Petsmart but here is a link to their sitehttp://www. bynaturepetfoods. com/God luck, hope your kitty feels better!

Your "economical" feeding habits have probably contributed to the cats problems. Get some GOOD cat food, like science diet for cats with sensitive stomachs. If you love your pet, its worth a few extra bucks, isnt it?

Many cats become allergic to chicken if that is the only protein source in their food for many years and corn is a known allergen for cats and dogs. Since those are the most widely used ingredients in cat food (they are VERY cheap) it is harder to find a food without either and they are all usually more expensive as the ingredients cost more. Many of the better canned foods have duck, rabbit, venison, lamb, etc. and they cost more. Eagle Pack has a dry food made with duck and oatmeal. Natural Balance had a venison and pea in dry food and I havent seen it lately. I use their canned venison and pea for my cats (among other brands).

Hi Imoran. About that I can talk to you a lot. My cat is allergic to wet food. He is only 6 months old. My situation was that he loved (still does) wet food and refused to eat his dry food. I went to Petco and got Natural Balance. I got canned food because no matter what type it was, dry or wet, the food was made specifically for allergic animals. Dick Van Patten (youll see his name right under the food brand) has been working on improving quality of life for allergic pets for quite some time so this fact gave me some confidence in buying the food. I grabbed wet food and gave it to my Abby. He loved it and never ever showed allergic symptoms ever again. Give it a try. Buy three or four cans see how it goes. Otherwise the vet needs to sell the foods that he needs to eat. Buy it from the vet. If your vet does not sell foods for allergic pets then go to another clinic and have him checked and have them sell you the specific foods you need to administer to your kitty. I think its safer if you did this. Good luck.

Your vet most likely has a prescription food that is appropriate for your kitty.

You are going to need to find a food that has a simple protien source that your cat is not allergic to. This is going to take trial and error and it is going to cost you some bucks to find the right food. Or you can have your cat tested and see what it is allergic to. Again costing you come bucks. In the end... I cnat tell you that there is an economical food out there that your cat can eat so I think you may want to look into raw. Feeding your cat a species appropriate diet migth cure him anyway.. Good Luck!

Since it seems pretty clear that your cat is allergic to something in the one food it used to eat, it should be pretty easy to identify what it was, and then find food that doesnt contain it. You dont have to buy special or prescription food. Just get food that doesnt have the same ingredients. The most common allergens are corn, wheat, soy and fish. Sometimes chicken too. But without knowing what you fed him, its hard to say what it might be in your case. I would definitely avoid the first three items, just as a rule because they dont belong in cat food anyway. Fishy foods shouldnt be served more than 2-3 times per week. If you identify the protein source in the old food, just get a food that uses something else.
