What are the best cat food for a pregnant cat? is caned food better or solid? what are the best brands :)

Denyse

Look for a brand that is high in protein with the protein coming from meat not grain(corn) Ingredients are listed in descending order just like human grade food. There are three brands of dry that I use for my breeding animals and they are in alphabetical order *Chicken Soup for the cat lovers soul*, Felidae, And Innova EVO. These are the best foods on the market because they have NO grain and all the protein is meat based.

I would keep her on a regular diet maybe a little more food but what is great is vitamins they can run about $4 but they are great for pregnant cats unless they say not to use on pregnant cats.

I liked to feed my pregnant cat kitten food. Its full of extra calcium and other vitamins. It helps with the growing babies and help keep mom heathier while the babies nurse.

As a veterinarian this is what I advise:A good quality kitten food. It is higher in calories, protien and calcium and is made for pregnant and lactating (nursing) female cats. A good food will have been tested in food trials on pregnant cats to prove that it has all of the necessary nutrients for a healthy pregnancy. The mother should continue to eat kitten food until the kittens are weaned. If you feed good food, no other supplements are necessary. Store brands and regional brands should be avoided. Some kittens food contain milk and some cats do not tolerate lactose. Switch the food over by mixing with old food over the course of a week. If diarrhea develops, you may need to chose a different food. Of course pregnant cats should be tested for Feline Leukemia Virus and Feline Immunodefiency Virus (sexually transmitted diseases) unless they and the male have already been tested--which should have been done before breeding. If a fecal exam for parasites have not been done in the past month or so, that should also be done and the cat treated appropriately. Kittens will need to be wormed with the right wormer at 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 weeks of age. Vaccines should start at six weeks. Pregnant cats should not be vaccinated but can start as soon as the kittens are born.

Kitten food. You feed a pregnant queen kitten food, because that is what she is feeding, and she needs the additional protein and fat and nutrients to build healthy babies. What food you feed is entirely up to you and your budget. Purina Kitten Chow is just fine, but you can go to the premium food if you want. I fed dry food, just Purina Kitten Chow, because she ate so much, and at the time, I was on a limited budget. And for the wet food what I did was buy an inexpensive cat -- not kitten -- food, which I opened into a pan, and mixed with pork or lamb liver (because they just happened to be the most inexpensive at the time), which I sauteed in butter and minced up. And to that I added a raw egg yolk or two. She gave birth to six perfectly healthy babies, and if there was a "runt", you couldnt tell which one it was.
