What kind of cat food do you feed a new mother cat?

Lynelle

My best friends cat just gave birth. She is about 1 yr and 4 months old. What kind of cat food is best for a nursing mother? Should she feed her Kitten food?

Chun

Yes, until shes done nursing!

Herminia

She should be fed kitten food. She needs all the fat and protein she can get right now. Any good-quality brand will do. Moist food is good because it helps her get liquid as well as nutrients; however, I would definitely keep both moist and dry food available for her, as well as water, of course. She should NOT receive milk.

MM...Youre going to receive both responses. Yes...feed her kitten food and No...just feed her adult food. The best answer for your friend is to ask her vet. She may want to take her cat in for evaluation to make sure that she is recovering properly from the delivery and that she is producing enough milk to feed her babies. As far as the answer you received about not handling the kittens, please disregard this portion of the answer. It is very important that the kittens are handled regularly from an early age to help with their socialization with people. It is too easy for young kittens to become feral. Just have your friend make sure that she and anyone who handles the kittens uses a good quality hand sanitizer both before and after handling. This will help keep the kittens healthy.

Kitten food is often recommended for nursing cats, but dont keep her on that after the kittens have been weaned.

Yeah thats what we gave my cat the man at the pet shop said if you think that they are looking under weight you can give them the powdered milk that u use for bottle fed kittens :)i got a tin of the stuff and my cat loved it (it smells yuck tho!!)

Feed the cat her normal cat food and water. Let the babies drink milk from the mom and when they start getting fur and their eyes open give them kitten food (also when they stop drinking milk).P. S. Dont touch the babies until they are 8-9 weeks or until there eyes open or else the mom wont take care or it. Hope this Helped. =)

Yes should feed her a good quality kitten food until she is done nursing her kittens. The extra vitamins and nutrients in the kitten food will help her produce enough milk to feed the kitten and keep her from losing so much of her body mass!

Aja

Yes!! feed her kitten food. she needs the vitmens from it.
