Should i keep feeding my cat wet kitten food or is all dry food okay?

Georgette

My cat (1 year) refuses to eat adult wet cat food. We have tried almost every high quality canned food out there, and he wont eat any of it.

Hi there, Some cats are very picky eaters and once they are used to dry food, it is difficult to make the switch. This being said most dry foods are nutritionally not the best, and contain lots of carbohydrates and grains which are not very nutritious and can be difficult for a cat to digest. We have a cat that is allergic to most cat foods. We switched him to Natural Balance Duck and Peas, which he adores. It does come in 3 oz cans so that might be something to try. Have you tried Wellness turkey or chicken? Most cats seem to love those flavors. They are made with no grain and from human grade meat. There is a relatively new dry food on the market now that is grainless. It is Evo cat and kitten food ( that is the name of the product). My cats go for it like moths to a flame. The minute they catch the scent of the open bag they run from all over the house. It is a high quality nutrition food also. We prefer feeding moist food as the water content is higher. Since most cats dont drink much water, moist food contains the fluid that they need. Hope this helps, TroublesnifferOwned by cats for over 40 yearsMember: Cat Writers Association

All my cats eat dry food and theyre all healthy and happy. If your cats a year, it might not want to switch, but it would be good to get a bag of some healthy tastey food and give it a try. I think the litter box doesnt smell so bad when you use the dry food too.

Dry food is fine, but try buying food like purina or iams made especially for your cats age, environment, etc. Maybe he will eat moist food when he is older, and if he does, just dont feed it to him everyday.

You are paying more money for the water that is in the canned food. Also, canned food (including human food) has salt in it to preserve it. This is not good for your cat. Give it a nutritionally balanced dry cat food. You can give your cat half of a small tuna sized can of canned food each day if you want to. The most important thing about feeding, I think, is to always change their water every day, several times a day. A lot of people dont do this. Would you want to drink out of a cup with dust and cat hair in it? Neither does a cat. Seems like you love your cat and is concerned for it. Try the dry food.

A vet told me a male cat needs wet food, in addition to dry food, because of its digestive system. If your cat liked his wet kitten food, give it back to him. You may want to, as time goes by, mix in a little bit of adult wet food from the same brand. By the time you are giving him 100% of the wet adult food, I bet hell eat it. I give my male cat dry all day long and wet at night.

My vet told me wet food is important because it helps keep the cat hydrated. He said a bit of both is best especially if the food is high quality.
