Does anyone else spend more on cat litter than they do on cat food? There seems like something is wrong with this theory. Especially when I have to clean the cat litter. Any certain brand you like best?

I mean we have 6 cats. We ONLY feed them organic cat food or we mkae our own...we switch off. We would NEVER feed our "babies" that crap in the Grocery stores....and most of the crap in Pet stores. Everyone needs to read "FOOD PETS DIE FOR" its a must if u love yiour kitties. We only use organic or very natural cat litter. Our one male cat Spike has asthma, so we have to make sure his box has NO dust and even those claiming 99% free are really dusty. We like:Feline PineBreeder’s choiceWegener’s Brandof course I think the food last alot longer than the litter. 6 cat boxes...and we clean them everyother day so it can be expensive as well as exhausting....gotta love the kids though

You must be joking, or you are feeding cheap garbage to your cat. Tidy Cat

Absolutely not. I spend far more on cat food because I have a cat with IBD/IBS and needs a special diet. The most expensive cat litters are not necesarilly better. I recommend buying some cheaper brands and see if the cat(s) approves of them--cats are very picky about where they potty and if they dont like the litter they will make sure you know it. I buy Tidy Cats crystals. It is not the cheapest brand, BUT it does not create a lot of dust in the air and leave the nasty dust on their fur and paws. They seem to prefer it over some of the others I have tried. There is also "natural" litter like newspaper, etc. but my cats dont like it and it is more expensive. Bottom line: Try some different ones and see how your cat(s) react compared with how you feel about it and your budget.

I was going to say guilty as charged but five of mine are sleeping on the bed and giving me very dirty looks. With the cost of corn based litter coming down in price, Im spending more on food. Thank goodness for the Trader Joes house brand. Premium food for a reasonable price.

I dont but I can see where that may happen. Some cats demand a pristine litter box, and are extremely fussy. So one can go through a lot of litter keeping the cat satisfied. You wind up throwing out litter more than would be expected. Most people use clumping litter, where one removes the clumps daily. That type of litter does not require a complete change as often as the old fashioned clay litters. So the cost is less to maintain the litter box. Since I have multiple cats, who thankfully are not super fussy, I use several different brand name clumping litters. I shop the sales and use coupons which is a great assist, since I have often hundreds of pounds of litter on hand at any one time. There are six litter boxes that are maintained. Tidy Cat with the red label is the major litter provided. A quality cat food does not have to be real expensive, but some people feed their cats very expensive cat foods, often paying more for the packaging and marketing than the ingredients.

Nope -- $2.98 a 25 lb bag at Walmarts last me almost 2 weeks with 4 cats. My monthly food bill for them is $40. They get a mix of canned and good quality dry foods.

I have 3 cats and 2 extra large litter boxes. I buy new litter (not the scoopable kind) for each box every Friday. If I don’t, the male cat will use the bathroom right outside the litterbox. This is my only warning! Next is the bathroom rug. Don’t forget, a lot of the litter is used by urine. I use the 2nd cheapest clay litter. It works best with my cats. Different cats like different types of litter. Some like the pine litter, or the crystals. Some like scoopable, and some don’t. Use the type of litter that YOUR cat/cats will use. As to the food issue. Remember that the cat’s food is small, and a lot will fit into that little bag. They also shouldn’t be eating like a dog. What goes in, must come out! Most experts say that you should have 1 litter box per cat, but my cats poo in one, and urinate in the other.

I used to use the regular clay litter and it seemed like I spent twice as much on litter than I did on food. I hated having to lug that heavy bag around and griped constantly about having to pick up litter. I switched to the big box of scoopable stuff, and even though it is more expensive than just a clay bag (nonscoop) it lasts about 4 times as long. I’m not constantly running for litter now and I think the price of food vs litter is about even. My favorite brand is the Tidy Cat multiple cat formula. Its not too grainy, so it doesnt stick to kitty feet and get tracked all over. It seems to do the job of odor control, too.

I love my cats, but they get basic Tidy Cats "sandy" type litter. Nothing special, I just get it wherever its on sale. The vet sells "Yesterdays News" which is a pellet-type litter made from recycled newspaper. Ive used shredded newspaper after theyve had surgery because the vet didnt want to take the chance of litter getting in the stitches. Its messy to clean up and doesnt give the odor removal of regular litter.

My cat just shits in a corner directly on the floor, then licks it up and cleans after itself. Its amazing! Im thinking to breed more like it...
