Does anyone else spend more on cat litter than they do on cat food? There seems like something is wrong with this theory. Especially when I have to clean the cat litter. Any certain brand you like best?

I mean we have 6 cats. We ONLY feed them organic cat food or we mkae our own...we switch off. We would NEVER feed our "babies" that crap in the Grocery stores....and most of the crap in Pet stores. Everyone needs to read "FOOD PETS DIE FOR" its a must if u love yiour kitties. We only use organic or very natural cat litter. Our one male cat Spike has asthma, so we have to make sure his box has NO dust and even those claiming 99% free are really dusty. I feed stray cats a lot, and my mom allowed me to bring a cat insie for one night. The food was $5 cheaper than the litter! The prices are ridicously high!

I do. The preimum clumping litter is so much cleaner and better than the cheap crap. I dont see any reason to waste money on expensive premium cat food. Even my vet thinks its a waste.

Well I spend more on cat food. With 13 cats it is a given. I found the best litter at ingles. It is in a big square tub it cost around eight dollars. It is easy to scoop and it keeps down odor. The name of it is Laura Lynn scoopable liter LOL it is good litter.

I only have one cat and shes a little on the small side so food isnt really that expensive to keep her full and happy. She is a picky eater only eats Purina dry food and doesnt like treats at all. With the cat litter she doesnt like when its dirty at all so i constantly have to change it. I buy the cat litter in bulk i when its on sale i usually buy a couple of the 40lb bags and they usually have coupons on them :) if i cant get the 40 i usually get the 20lb and that lasts me. I spend more money on cat litter than i do cat food.

No, I spend about $60 a month on canned foods from Natural Balance, Natures Variety, and Merrick, etc. Since my cats are happy with pine pellets, I buy 40lb bags from the hardware store for about $4. These last about six weeks. For anyone who wants to try this kind of litter, I advise buying a small bag of Feline Pine, mixing it gradually in with whatever litter you currently use, and then if your cat will use it, find yourself a hardware store that sells pine pellets as fuel for wood stoves, because it is much cheaper.

Id rather buy organic food and cheap litter than vice versa. Premium foods are not "crap" like someone else said. Research what by-products, meat and bone meal, rendered meats and artificial preservatives can do to your cats. Vets argue against premium foods because they often sell crappy by-product and artificial chemical enhanced formulas at their office and therefore make money off it.

Not us - we use the wood stove pellets for litter - $5.00 for a 40 lb bag - better price and IMO better litter for us.

No, but the reason for that is two fold... I feed the "kids" no-grain, by-product free foods (Taste of the Wild, Healthwise and Innova) that are higher priced but much healthier than supermarket brands... AND their litter is very inexpensive ($4.49/40 lb. bag).Im using wood pellets used for wood burning stoves (100% pine; NO cedar, NO additives). I checked with a holistic vet before switching. It took about a month of gradually adding the pellets to their clumping litter to get them used to the change in texture. I just scoop and flush the poop. The pellets absorb the urine, breaking down into sawdust (not fine dust particles like clumping and non-clumping clay litters) which settles to the bottom of the box. You can use your existing litter box and dump when about half of the pellets have broken down, buy a box made for Feline Pine litter, or make your own sifter. About 2-3 times a week, I use a plastic colander (the type used for draining spaghetti) to sift out the sawdust, put the pellets back in the box and add a scoop or two of fresh pellets on top. Its wonderful!! Theres no cat box odor or dust, cleanup is easy, no more time consuming than clumping litter, and theres almost no tracking! Ecologically, its way better than dumping clay litter into landfills and the sawdust can even be composted and used for mulch. If you cant locate cedar-free pellets in your area, look into a similar, cedar-free product thats used for horse bedding. No. Actually I spend more on food. I spend about $30 on food a month and about $20 on the litter. I have 3 cats and they eat a lot. The cat boxes get dumped out and washed twice a month ( we have 3 of them) and scooped every other day so in between I just add a little fresh litter to the boxes. I prefer scoop away for multiple cats for the big box and then I use the tidy cats non clumping litter for the small ones because those are the ones the kitten prefers.

Nope, I feed my Purina One: Hairball formula. That $21 dollars twice monthly for 5 cats. I like Tidy Cats clumping - the long lasting one.

I have 3 cats and 2 extra large litter boxes. I buy new litter (not the scoopable kind) for each box every Friday. If I don’t, the male cat will use the bathroom right outside the litterbox. This is my only warning! Next is the bathroom rug. Don’t forget, a lot of the litter is used by urine. I use the 2nd cheapest clay litter. It works best with my cats. Different cats like different types of litter. Some like the pine litter, or the crystals. Some like scoopable, and some don’t. Use the type of litter that YOUR cat/cats will use. As to the food issue. Remember that the cat’s food is small, and a lot will fit into that little bag. They also shouldn’t be eating like a dog. What goes in, must come out! Most experts say that you should have 1 litter box per cat, but my cats poo in one, and urinate in the other.

I used to use the regular clay litter and it seemed like I spent twice as much on litter than I did on food. I hated having to lug that heavy bag around and griped constantly about having to pick up litter. I switched to the big box of scoopable stuff, and even though it is more expensive than just a clay bag (nonscoop) it lasts about 4 times as long. I’m not constantly running for litter now and I think the price of food vs litter is about even. My favorite brand is the Tidy Cat multiple cat formula. Its not too grainy, so it doesnt stick to kitty feet and get tracked all over. It seems to do the job of odor control, too.
