Is it safe to feed my chickens canned fish cat food?

Lavern

Ive heard that fish is a good source of protein for chickens to eat, and as I dont want to feed them other animals (meat and bone meal), I thought that cheap canned fish, like cat food, could be a good option from time to time. Does anyone know if this could be bad for them?

Cythia

While chickens are omnivores....they will eat almost anything, meat included....(worms are meat!) I wouldnt feed canned cat food to anything, especially a chicken. The chemicals and preservatives that are in that food are detrimental to the health of any carnivore. This may be especially harmful if you are planning on butchering this bird for your own food or are eating its eggs. Chickens need to be fed a food as close to natural as possible....grains, grasses, bugs, seeds, etc. The best thing is to let them loose in a safe area to scavenge for themselves. They know what best to eat....If you really want to give them fresh protein, raise mealworms for them. They are simple to raise and the chickens will LOVE them.

I thought chickens ate grains. Are yours carnivorous?

Well, Get some dry catfood. I believe it should be okay. But I wouldnt like feed it all the time because theyll grow rather fat and crush the eggs they lay.

Catrina

Not good. feed them egg shells. they will eat them. it will help avoid thin eggs which can cause egg binding. my ex best friends mother use to do this all the time and never had a problem. worms are protein. egg food is an excellent protein for them too. you can be cheap and feed them scrambled eggs no salt no butter. that will do it.

Audria

No! If there is no food and thats all you have and your absolutely desperate then its ok. But regularly no! They need proper grains, like wheat.

Aracely

Yes, not only protein, but good fats and calcium
