Why is cat food bad for dogs to eat?

Eloisa

My pug will eat the cat food instead of his own food anytime our backs are turned. Vet says not to let that happen but why?

Debi

I am a pug lover also!! but the reason it is bad for them is for several reasons, it will make them overweight( which is too easy for pugs), and it doesnt have the nutrients for a dog. that would be like feeding your cat hampster food, it just isnt made for them. I can tell you why it is so irresistable to them, its the flavor and smell, to them its like leaving a bowl of people food on the ground. what i do is keep my cats food at a higher level, i have a special shelf just for his food where my pugs cant get to it

Cortez

Its ok to feed a dog cat food (my 15 year old yorkie has never eaten anything else. But you cant feed a cat dog food as it hasnt enough protien. As long as it doesnt upset his stomach it will not harm him.

Eleanor

The cat food wont necessarily harm your dog in and of itself, but it doesnt carry the nutrients your dog needs. Dog food is designed to deliver the things that dogs need - just as cat food is designed to deliver the things that cats need. If your dog fills up on cat food, it wont eat its own food, and therefore will miss getting proper nutrition.

Devona

It is very high in protein and will make then throw up

Armanda

It doesnt hurt them but it can make dogs very fat because the protein and fatty acids and other nutrients in the food makes them gain wait. its not made for dogs anyway. in the long run it could kill your dog if thats what your feeding it but otherwise it wont hurt them. my dogs get into the cat food alot but they dont get it enough to harm them. try keeping the cat food off the floor. put it up where the cat can reach it but the dog cant. the stuff isnt healthy for them.

Cruz

It makes them throw up. It makes the dogs I ever had do that.

Elna

Ive heard that cat food is formulated for the cat needs which are different from dogs and the extra/different ingredients can be harmful. Cats are true carnivores. They have several unique nutrient requirements—some because of a lack of certain enzymes. So if you feed dog food to a cat for a significant period of time, it may develop nutritional deficiencies that result in blindness, weight loss, and eventually death.

Jeane

Cat food is much higher in protien than dog food.
