What kind of cat food should i buy?

Larue

Weve got a 2 year old cat and have recently read that she should be getting wet cat food, not just dry. We want to buy a good quality cat food, not just what is expensive or has hollow promises. What kind should I buy? Thanks!

Dannette

Any wet food that has zero grain, if you go to a mom and pop pet store the cost will be cheaper and also they really know their stuff unlike the bigger pet stores.. I use wellness canned and no grain core dry.. sure has helped my diabetic cats blood sugar go down.. and my other 2 cats really like it too..

Margret

I use Before Grain. Their wet food is all real meat, nothing else. My cats go crazy for it.

Tamesha

I use Evo and Instincts. Both of these are products that do not have grains. I have also provided a link that provides links to many different brands of high-quality cat food. This might aid in your decision making. Good luck.

Good for you for looking into good quality foods. Try taking a look at Wellness, Solid Gold, Natural Balance, Innova, Felidae, Taste of the Wild (although, for right now, they just make dry).Wet food is the better option for cats. It helps them get water into their diet as they arent normally a "thirsty" animal. I feed my two dry in the morning and wet in the evening. This way, they have the best of both worlds. Even though many say that dry does not have any benefit, I think that it does help to clean their teeth (although, many will disagree).Good luck with whatever you choose! :]

Im a huge fan of the Innova EVO and Wellness lines. Theyre two of the highest protein foods available, which is important for cats. Both contain multiple meat sources with absolutely no fillers. Its pricey, but great stuff. Ive added some links to some of the wet formulas. Good luck!

If feeding dry, make sure you pay attention to ingredients and buy higher quality that doesnt contains grains and fillers, ie: corn, rice. And doesnt contain undesirable "meat", ie: the word meal or by-product behind any meat. With dry, cats can become more easily dehydrated since they dont have a very strong thirst drive. So even though you might see them drinking and drinking water, theyre still not getting as much water as they should. (I dont know any brand names since I dont feed dry food to my cat.)If feeding wet (which is better), stick with brands that have close to or 100% meat and vitamins/supplements, ie: Artemis, AvoDerm, Evo 95%, Tiki Cat. They dont need all of those unnecessary fruits and veggies like peas, green beans, greens, spinach, etc. And with wet, theyll be getting a very good amount of water and will prob drink less water from their water bowl. They should eat no more than 2 servings of fish per week since too much fish can cause undesirable health related problems. If feeding raw (which is best), stick with a company that includes muscle meat, organs, and bones. Theyll be getting pretty much the correct amount of water intake and will drink even less water out of water bowl than if they were on a wet food diet. But as always, leave plenty of fresh water available daily. Im finally transitioning my cat to raw and so far its going pretty great. Shes 9 mos old so, in my case its easier to transition her than it would be a 2yr old whos prob been eating dry or dry/wet all of its life. But patience and persistence is the key. Cats are obligate carnivores which means they eat nothing but meat. The few grains, fruits and veggies are ones they might eat from the stomach contents of their prey. Im feeding Taylor Pond Farms through mypetcarnivore. com to my cat. They only grind the animal/organs/bone and dont add unnecessary fruits and veggies. Raw can be a tad expensive at first but once your cat gets it in their system, theyll only be eating a bit a day. Ill be buying about 20lbs (approx. $60 plus $10 for shipping) of food at a time and my cat will be eating about 4-5oz to start off with (maybe the first month) and eating less as time goes by (should get down to about 2-3 oz per day). But youll spend less for other things, their poops will be smaller and less smelly so you wont have to change out the litter as often. Their coat should become shiny and softer and less shedding. Less odor on their breath. Healthy in general so less visits to the vet. PS: The statement about dry kibble cleaning their is a myth. Most cats, such as mine, just swallow the kibble whole and never chew through it to "clean" the teeth. Even when she does get a bite in, the kibble is too brittle to actually clean anything. Chewing through raw meaty bones is an excellent source of cleaning teeth.

Glad you asked. canned foods with no grains are best Nutrition since there are so many bad things out there is very important to your cat’s healthContrary to what you may have heard; dry foods are not a great thing to feed a cat. Please read the label on what you are feeding? What are the ingredients? Do you know what they mean? Is the first ingrediant a muscle meat like chicken or meal or other things? http://www. catinfo. org/#Learn_How_To_Rea…http://iml. jou. ufl. edu/projects/Spring04…Dry foods are the number 1 cause of diabetes in cats as well as being a huge contributing factor to kidney disease, obesity, crystals, u. t.i’s and a host of other problems. Food allergies are very common when feeding dry foods. Rashes, scabs behind the tail and on the chin are all symptomsThe problems associated with Dry food is that they are loaded with grains and carbohydrates which many cats (carnivores) cannot process. Also, Most of the moisture a cat needs is suppose to be in the food but inDry, 95% of it is zapped out of dry foods in the processing. Another thing, most use horrible ingredients and dont use a muscle meat as the primary ingredient and use vegetable based protein versus animal. Not good for an animal that has to eat meat to survive. http://www. catinfo. org/#My_Cat_is_Doing_…You want to pick a canned food w/o gravy (gravy=carbs) that uses a muscle meat as the first ingredient and doesnt have corn at least in the first 3 ingredients if at all. THE BEST CAT FOODS CONTAIN NO GRAINS NO BYPOODUCTS NO MEALCats are meat eaters not cereal or rice eaters Fancy feast is a middle grade food with 9lives, friskies whiskas lower grade canned and wellness and merrick upper grade human quality foods. I would rather feed a middle grade canned food then the top of the line dry food. Also, dry food is not proven to be better for teeth. Does a hard pretzel clean your teeth or do pieces of it get stuck? http://www. felinefuture. com/nutrition/bp… Please read about cat nutrition. http://www. catinfo. org/ http://www. catinfo. org/feline_obesity. ht… http://maxshouse. com/feline_nutrition. ht… Vetinarian diets The reason your vet thinks so highly of the pet food they sell probably has more to do with money than nutrition. In vet school, the only classes offered on nutrition usually last a few weeks, and are taught by representatives from the pet food companies. Vet students may also receive free food for their own dogs and cats at home. They could get an Iams notebook, a Purina purse and some free pizza. http://iml. jou. ufl. edu/projects/Spring04…

Yes - very true about cats needing wet food as well - http://www. littlebigcat. com/index. php? ac… Someone else mentioned Merricks "Before Grain". I had some samples of this from a recent cat show and my cats LOVED it. The great thing about this food is all thats in there is meat. No wheat gluten, additives, fillers, chemicals like cheap grocery store foods. It does cost a bit more per can but since its so nutrient-dense the cats eat much less of it and theyre full. You also dont have to worry about a food like that being involved in a recall for some strange imported ingredient. Other good canned food brands are Innova Evo, the other Merricks foods, Felidae, Tiki Cat. For dry foods look for foods with little to no grain and meat as the main ingredient. My cats and ferrets both eat Petcurean Go! Natural and Innova Evo. Both have zero grain and 50% protein. Its amazing how long a bag lasts as like the quality canned foods, they eat less and theyre full.
