What is the healthiest wet cat food?

Charissa

My 10 year old Siamese girl has been sick and has lost a lot of weight. Her appetite is there but she only eats a few bites of food. She loves wet food but is finicky - her favorite is 9 Lives Super Supper, but since shes eating so little Id like to get something a little more nutritious into her, maybe even a prescription food? SO whats the healthiest most nutrient dense WET cat food?

Oh, poor girl. I too have a siamese - she is 17.What is the sickness? Typically, weight loss in older siamese is due to mouth problems, kidney disease and/or heart troubles. While food is very important, you must also treat the condition. The type of food is very important, especially for a sick cat. Again, depending upon the condition, vets have typically recommended prescription food. There is now debate over whether this type of restricted diet is actually very beneficial. More recently, evidence suggests that the quality of food is more important for cats. That is, foods with added grains, fillers and other additives are harder on the body, while high quality foods are processed more efficiently and produce less waste. Get away from the supermarket brands and look for better quality foods available in pet stores or through the internet. See the links below. Of course, any food is better than no food. If the cat refuses to eat quality food and only wants fancy feast (which many cats love, but is not considered a quality food), you must feed the cat something, as cats are poor fasters and can quickly develop liver disease with insufficient nutrition.

A prescription diet sounds good for her, if shes sick. What sickness does she have? The diets cater to different problems. MediCal is a good company to buy food from, though youll probably have to get it through your vet clinic.

Well my cat is over 20 years old and not doing to well. She seems to prefer Fancy Feast and it comes with a small portion. The Fancy Feast Elegant Medleys seems to be the best choice.

Try Fancy Feast, especially the gourmet versions. It contains the most meat, without unnecessary ingredients like grains and cranberries. Avoid the gravy ones, as they contain soy as a thickener. Hills Science Diet a/d is also a nutrient rich food, but Id avoid the other SD foods.

They are filled with cheap garbage. Read the first url and then pick any food WET CANNEDthat is high in protein and under 10% carbs. Avoid the fish varietys except for a couple meals a week. The article will explain my warnings better than me trying to shorten them to fit this space. Good luck and I am glad you are feeding wet food. Wellness is higest in calories maybe feeding some or all of her meals with wellness would help. Avoid all dry.

I personally like Natural Balance. You can get it at Petco. It has no by-products, corn, wheat, soy, or artificial colors or flavors. Blue Buffalo is also a good one, its at PetsMart. Other good foods include Wellness, Evangers, and Merrick.

The most important thing for her right now is that she eat - anything! So if she likes the 9-Lives keep on offering that in the meantime. But youre right to look for better foods. And to want to feed canned food which is much better for them. My two cats get dry only as a treat. Theres no one food that is the best. You have to take many factors into account so whats best for my cats may not be best for yours. But that said, there are many good foods and youre sure to find one that meets all your requirements, the most important of which is that your cat will eat it! See the What to feed link for suggestions. That said, I personally chose Natures Variety Instincts. Its expensive but its the only food Ive found that agrees with Poppys sensitive system. FYI, prescription foods are typically pure-d crap. Id never feed one. And if my vet were ever to suggest I do so, Id get another vet.
