What is a good quality cat food to switch to?

Carina

Ive read innova EVO and wellness are good but they are hard to find where i live and ive also read they can be bad for cats with high protein intolerance. Im thinking of buying Avoderm or California natural. are those ok? they currently eat purina cat chow. Also, do i have to feed them a certain amount? Since i have a lot of cats I usually just pour food on the dish and they come eat when they want.

Unless a cat is in end stage kidney failure, the high protein content of EVO and Wellness isnt a problem. Nature made cats to eat an all-meat, high protein diet. California Naturals a great food, and well liked here. Avoderm I have no personal experience with, but they are all surely significantly better than the corn and by-product filled foods you get at the grocery store, like purina and Iams. You can feed them the same as you do now. When switching to a premium food you can anticipate some loose stool (for some cats) as they get used to the new food. Also expect some shedding, as the old coat is replaced by a new healthy coat. And some cats will resist the better food at first - imagine telling a little kid that they arent getting McDonalds for dinner any more. Most cats though take one bite of the food, and say "wow - real meat" and never look back.

I cant really help you on this as I think you are talking about food which you buy in the USA. However, I wanted to respond the the person who said that IAMS is good because the cats eat less. The reason they do this is because dry food swells in the stomach (drop some in a bowl of water and see what happens). This is definitely not a good sign. There is NO good dry food so, if at all possible, feed a good quality wet food with a small amount of dry (apparently Orijen is good because it is grainless).

High protein intolerance? Im not a vet but that makes no sense. If youre talking about a cat with kidney problems, then the answer is not low protein, its better protein. Regardless, here are some other good foods in the link. Most if not all include store locators so you can find out if theyre sold in your area. The two brands you mention are ok but perhaps not top of the line.

Avoderm is good. Feeding them in one big bowl is fine. Here is a link that has a lot of good foods and you can order online. http://search. onlynaturalpet. com/search.…HOPE THIS HELPS:)P. S. iams etc are not good for your cats.

Avoderm or the Natural is a quality food. I like the Natural Balance one too. Im assuming you are feeding dry only. I dont like to free feed adult cats - they tend to get too fat. I have scheduled meals for mine (dry in the morning; canned at night).

Hi Cats need protein to survive. They are carnivores. No cats (and yes I am including crf cats that are not in the final stages) have high protein intolerance Wellness and innova evo are good brands but if you ae talking about dry foods, I would rather feed a lousy wet then any dry food. Wellness cans as well as innova are great. Since you have multiple cats, wellness has 12 1/2 oz cans for around 2 bucks which makes them cheaper then fancy feast. You can buy food from petfood direct. com. Sign up for coupons and when you get the 20 or 22% off ones, you can buy in bulk. Email me if you have a crf cat. Please learn about feline nutrition. Nutrition since there are so many bad things out there is very important to your cat’s healthContrary to what you may have heard; dry foods are not a great thing to feed a cat. Please read the label on what you are feeding? What are the ingredients? Do you know what they mean? Is the first ingrediant a muscle meat like chicken or meal or other things? http://www. catinfo. org/#Learn_How_To_Rea…http://iml. jou. ufl. edu/projects/Spring04…Dry foods are the number 1 cause of diabetes in cats as well as being a huge contributing factor to kidney disease, obesity, crystals, u. t.i’s and a host of other problems. Food allergies are very common when feeding dry foods. Rashes, scabs behind the tail and on the chin are all symptomsThe problems associated with Dry food is that they are loaded with grains and carbohydrates which many cats (carnivores) cannot process. Also, Most of the moisture a cat needs is suppose to be in the food but inDry, 95% of it is zapped out of dry foods in the processing. Another thing, most use horrible ingredients and dont use a muscle meat as the primary ingredient and use vegetable based protein versus animal. Not good for an animal that has to eat meat to survive. http://www. catinfo. org/#My_Cat_is_Doing_…You want to pick a canned food w/o gravy (gravy=carbs) that uses a muscle meat as the first ingredient and doesnt have corn at least in the first 3 ingredients if at all. THE BEST CAT FOODS CONTAIN NO GRAINS NO BYPOODUCTS NO MEALCats are meat eaters not cereal or rice eaters Fancy feast is a middle grade food with 9lives, friskies whiskas lower grade canned and wellness and merrick upper grade human quality foods. I would rather feed a middle grade canned food then the top of the line dry food. Also, dry food is not proven to be better for teeth. Does a hard pretzel clean your teeth or do pieces of it get stuck? http://www. felinefuture. com/nutrition/bp… Please read about cat nutrition. http://www. catinfo. org/ http://www. catinfo. org/feline_obesity. ht… http://maxshouse. com/feline_nutrition. ht… Vetinarian diets The reason your vet thinks so highly of the pet food they sell probably has more to do with money than nutrition. In vet school, the only classes offered on nutrition usually last a few weeks, and are taught by representatives from the pet food companies. Vet students may also receive free food for their own dogs and cats at home. They could get an Iams notebook, a Purina purse and some free pizza. http://iml. jou. ufl. edu/projects/Spring04…

IAMS is supposed to be great and it seems as though because it is balanced nutrition, the felines actually eat less, saving money.
