My kitten is about 8 months old now and Ive been feeding her Purina dry kitten food. That is all she eats is dry food. When should I switch her to adult dry cat food and what kind should I get her?

Give your kitten three meals a day until he is six months old. At six months your kitten may resemble an adult cat, but dont be fooled he still has a lot of growing up to do and should continue eating a diet made specially for kittens. Dont be worried if your kittens appetite decreases slightly between four to seven months of age. As he loses his baby teeth, he may eat a little less because his gums are sore. By the time he is seven months old, most of your kittens permanent teeth should have grown in. Once your kitten has reached his first birthday, he is officially an adult cat. The high calorie requirements he had as a kitten have gradually declined and he can now switch to an adult cat food.

You could start feeding her adult food now though you should stick with Purina.

From what Ive read, a kitten should remain on kitten for for her first year before switching to an adult food because they are still growing and require the higher nutrient levels that are found in kitten food. When a year is up, dont switch her diet immediately, but instead slowly introduce the adult food so say for the first few days just a tablespoon of adult food and the rest kitten food etc. (switching too quickly can cause an upset stomach)As for which brand: if she likes Purina then you may as well try her on Purina Adulthttp://www. purinaone. co. uk/Products/Adul…And best of all - you all ready have her on biscuits and NOT wet food which is going to work out sooo much better for her teeth and save you the cost and risk of dental treatment! Good luck x

We always switch ours over after the first year (thank goodness, because our little girls starting to get fat after being fixed).

Your kitten is eating horribly and you need to learn about proper nutrition for cats Nutrition since there are so many bad things out there is very important to your cat’s healthContrary to what you may have heard; dry foods are not a great thing to feed a cat. Please read the label on what you are feeding? What are the ingredients? Do you know what they mean? Is the first ingredient a muscle meat like chicken or meal or other things? http://www. catinfo. org/#Learn_How_To_Rea…http://www. petfoodratings. net/glossary. h…http://www. acreaturecomfort. com/truthabo…Dry foods are the number 1 cause of diabetes in cats as well as being a huge contributing factor to kidney disease, obesity, crystals, u. t.i’s, constipation, and a host of other problems. Male cats are especially prone to blockagesfrom dry food. Food allergies are very common when feeding dry foods. Rashes, scabs behind the tail and on the chin are all symptoms The problems associated with Dry food is that they are loaded with grains and carbohydrates which many cats (carnivores) cannot process. ( Have a fat cat?)An even bigger problem is that it IS dry and it dehydrates no matter how much your cat drinksMost of the moisture a cat needs is suppose to be in the food. Cats are not naturally big drinkers. 95% of the moisture is zapped out of dry foods in the processing. Think about it. Another thing, most use horrible ingredients and dont use a muscle meat as the primary ingredient and use vegetable based protein versus animal. Not good for an animal that has to eat meat to survive. http://www. catinfo. org/#My_Cat_is_Doing_…You want to pick a canned food w/o gravy (gravy=carbs) that uses a muscle meat as the first ingredient and doesnt have corn at least in the first 3 ingredients if at all. THE BEST CAT FOODS CONTAIN NO GRAINS NO BYPRODUCTS Cats are meat eaters not cereal or rice eaters Fancy feast is a middle grade food with 9lives, friskies whiskas lower grade canned and wellness and merrick upper grade human quality foods. I would rather feed a middle grade canned food then the top of the line dry food. Also, dry food is not proven to be better for teeth. Does a hard pretzel clean your teeth or do pieces of it get http://www. littlebigcat. com/index. php? ac…www. felinefuture. com/?p=470aryact=sho… Please read about cat nutrition. http://www. catinfo. org/ http://www. catinfo. org/feline_obesity. ht… http://maxshouse. com/feline_nutrition. ht… Vetinarian diets The reason your vet thinks so highly of the pet food they sell probably has more to do with money than nutrition. In vet school, the only classes offered on nutrition usually last a few weeks, and are taught by representatives from the pet food companies. Vet students may also receive free food for their own dogs and cats at home. They could get an Iams notebook, a Purina purse and some free pizza. http://iml. jou. ufl. edu/projects/Spring04…Nutritional Education Program website page for the American College of Veterinary Nutrition. What i did with my cat is i slowly introduced him by buying the same brand but the adult formula, then what you do it you slowly mix the kitten and the adult until the kitten food is gone. That way your cat is used to the adult formula and it will more likly eat it. Purina is a good brand and if she eats the kitten formula she will probably eat the adult.

She could have been eating adult food months ago - I never give mine kitten food after 4-5 months old and never had a fat cat. If she is spayed (which she should be by now) you dont need the extra calories. Its best to feed both canned and dry each day, and Purina is not that great of a food. Gradually switch her now with higher quality food like Wellness, Blue Buffalo, Natural Balance.
