What are the best brands of cat food and why?

Lucilla

I have two cats and I want to feed the best to them. I am currently feeding my two cats Whiskas. I heard it is very good food. I also heard these brands are awesome;-Fancy Feast-Iams-Science Diet-Friskies-Cat Chow-Purina One-Meow Mix - and the noname brands I have also heard are goodFeel free to add on the my list of cat foods. Thanks.

I wouldnt take any advice fro people telling you that these brands are "awesome". They all have fillers and by-products, none of which are good for your cat. Cats are carnivores, so they have no need for rice or corn, which is used a lot in these foods. Meat by-products consist of gross things, like ground bone and feathers. Some people prefer to feed their cats a grain-free food, like Wellness CORE or EVO. I feed my cat Innova, which does have some (better) grains, such as oats and brown rice. Its certainly not a perfect food, but its much better than the foods you listed. Other quality, grain-containing foods are Blue Buffalo, Felidae, Wellness.

Greta

I use Purina one for my cat. She is a really healthy cat so I guess its a good cat food

Melisa

I feed my cat, Alley Cat Kiy Kaboodle.

Reid

I prefer to feed my cats high quality dry food. The good brands have higher protein content and lower carbohydrate content to avoid diabetes. I have also heard dry food is better for their teeth. Personally I love Royal Canines cat food. It makes my cats coats super shiny! I also highly reccoment Science Diet!

Oretha

I would say that I would feed your cat Friskies because its what I feed my animals and they are super healthy.

We have always had success with dry cat food which you can find at any local pet store: "Royal Canin". There are several types for various body styles and nutritional needs. Its great for finicky cats.

Look for one that has meat listed as the first ingredient. How much do you want to spend?? Costcos Kirkland Cat Food is very good for the price. Chicken is its first ingredient and it costs $16 for a 25 pound bag. Avoid foods that have corn meal as their 1st ingredient.

Dulcie

I use Science diet. Iams is good too if you want cheaper and easier to find.

You rate a food by what it contains, and also by what it does *not* contain. Remember first that nature created cats to eat meat - they have no need for grains in their diet. Corn is the primary ingredient of these foods - yet corn has little to no nutritional value for cats, and is the source of many food allergies and tummy upsets. Its added to cat food because its cheap - not because its of any value to our cats. Avoid foods with corn - and that is corn in all of its forms: corn, corn meal, ground yellow corn, maize. Its hidden under many different names so that you the consumer arent aware of just how much corn is in the food. The next thing to avoid is by-products. This isnt meat - its all the scrap "parts" that have been deemed unfit for human consumption. Its such tasty bits as beaks, hides, heads, feet, intestines, spinal chords, tendons, and even spoiled and diseased meat. Its a very low-quality protein source for your cats. Choose a food with a real meat source as the first ingredient. Meat is what your cats need to thrive, not scrap fillers like corn and by-products. Read the ingredients of what you are currently feeding. None of the foods youre listing are really good for your cats. They are just cheap ingredients with clever advertising and appealing packaging. The pet store contains a wide choice of foods that are significantly healthier for your cats, and at a price for all budgets. You can go to Petsmart and get their Authority brand, or pick up Nutro at any pet store. Those are the budget prices foods - budget priced, but you are paying for the ingredients and not clever advertising. At the upper end are foods like Natural Balance, Blue Buffalo, and Wellness.
