Like, is it easier to get a young cat or kitten, or adult cat? Just, tell me some basics and what i need to get or to know. OH, and if i got a pair, should it be 2 boys, 2 girls, or 1 boy and 1 girl? THANKS :D(i thought it would be a common sense thing..)But no, i've never had to give away any cats.2 cats got lost and i think were taken in my our neighbors up the hill, because we see some that look alike around once in a while, and the other had gotten hit by a car. the previous cats were barn cats before we got them so they were outside a lot, but if i get another cat i will not let them outside, they will be house cats. What do i need for a cat?
I have a 7 year old Siamese names Skye. The past few years we have been struggling to find a good diet for her due to allergies. After feeding high quality dry kibble (vomiting) and then raw (refused to only eat that we ended up with feeding evo grain free canned 95% meat venison. After process of elimination we realized all along it was the chicken in the food. Years of itching and vomiting was because it was chicken she was allergic to and not what I had thought. She tolerates eating the evo but when we sit down to eat she act so pitiful like she is starving. I was wanting to find some meaty bones that I could give her occasionally as a treat. I have heard several different things about undercooked or raw pork and a chance of catching parasites. Some say NEVER feed it, some say sure no problem, and some say freeze it for a while first. Is it ok to feed raw pork neck bones with a bit of meat to my cat or is there a certain way to go about preparing it?? Or should I totally rule out giving it to her all together? I'd prefer the opinion of people who have fed raw before or still is not some person who gives their cat PURINA and stuff as a meal. icedtea74: I am feeding her a high quality canned food currently. The only ingredients are venison (meat, organs, & bone) and added vitamins such as taurine. I would just feed raw but she refuses to eat just that. A question about the B. A.R. F. diet for cats and raw pork?
I just switched his diet from Purina Cat Chow for indoor cats to a brand called The Goodlife Recipe which is made with natural ingredients. My mom wanted to buy it because she thought he'd like it better, I didn't read up on it like I should have, but it seemed to check out. His poop is a lighter whiteish color as opposed to the normal brown. Is it because of the food change? I know that can be an issue, but it seems a bit drastic and unhealthy. Why won't the cat eat? Should I switch foods?
I adopted a kitten from the humane society earlier in the week and have been giving him purina one as that's what they've been feeding him. After doing some research I learned that purina is not good so I'm planning on switching his food. He has bad gas and his stool smells horrible. He's already been dewormed so I'm guessing he needs a change in diet. What should I give him? I am raising 2 kitens that are 4 weeks old tomorrow (got them last Friday - long story on how, but were with their mother for the first 3 weeks). I have raised kittens before, but not for at least 10 years. One is far ahead of the other in development, even though they are brothers, and can urinate and defecate on it's own, for sure. The "slower" one, can urinate on his own, but 3 days ago, I had to stimulate him to defecate, and could tell he needed it. He has not defecated, to my knowledge, for 2.5 days. However, it is possible that he went somewhere that I can't find it. He is not bloated, eating voraciously, and playing hard. If it matters, he is eating about 100mL of kitty formula a day (mixed according to directions on label), and some a/d and purina canned food, though I am not sure how much actually ends up in his mouth - more of it is all over my floor :) Both of them were wormed for ascarids when I got them as well. So now the question: If he can urinate on his own, can he for surely defecate on his own? I am going to the vet tomorrow for a FeLV test before I let them run with my adult cat, but thought I would try to get some answers tonight. Right now I have them in my bathroom with a baby gate - 4x4ft room about with a large ferret litter box (low edges), for when I am gone. I usually let them run around the living room when I am home, but I guess I will need to keep them in that room more often until litter box trained. Or do you think I should put them in a smaller enclosure? Or just keep them in there an hour or so after feeding?

I bought a hedgehog about two months ago, and she was on a dry food specifically for hedgehogs from the company 'Sunseed'. I cut some up, and opened her mouth, and she ate it, but when I put her down, she started sniffing around elsewhere, instead of toward her bowl of meal worms. I don't think she likes them, but I know she can't survive on dry food alone... I heard cat food works, and I've tried dry Purina cat food, and another brand of wet cat food. I put the wet cat food on her nose so she'd lick it off, and maybe like it, but she didn't eat it. She hasn't eaten in a couple days, because she won't eat what I give her... When I tried the dry cat food, she ate it at first without hesitation, but I think it might have been too hard for her to chew, because she only ate 2 pieces, and with difficulty. I tried peaches as well, and blackberries, but nothing sparks her interest... She's drinking plenty of water, but I'm afraid she'll die if she doesn't eat! She seems very healthy still, though she has eaten barely at all in the past two days... In fact, she spends most of her time hiding in her small box (her claimed house) and sleeping for most of the day. Is all this normal?? What can I do for her?

How To Protect Your Furnishings From You Cat's Destructive Scratches

If you find that your window screens, chairs and rugs are looking like someone had a fight on them, your cat is probably the culprit. Cats can cause havoc to furnishings and can destroy your beautiful home with their sharp claws. So how can you solve this problem? To nip the problem in the bid, you must understand why she scratches in the first place.

Historically, felines were deadly predators who relied on their sharp claws to climb up trees and hunt their preys. However, today, cats have become domesticated creatures and don't need to hunt anymore. But since old instincts never dies, so they still sharpen their claws.

Also, you need to understand that cats need to scratch to release some innate energy. Scratching is also a cat's way of cutting her nails, since it removes the old outer part of her claws. Scratching releases special scents from the glands in the cats' paws to help them mark that spot as theirs.

If you are sick and tired of your cat's frequent scratchings, you have an option to de claw her. However, this is an expensive and unnecessary surgery and you may want to try some alternatives instead.

Here are some solutions to prevent cat scratching

1. Provide your feline friend with scratching pads or posts.

Scratching pads are made for cats to scratch so instead of scratching on your furniture, they scratch these pads or posts. You can buy them or if you prefer, you can also make your own simple scratching post. You can do this by using a 2 foot high section of a 4 by 4, a 2 foot by 2 foot piece of heavy plywood plus a carpet remnant.

Once you have a scratching post or pad for your feline, make sure that you place it right next to her favorite piece of furniture. Observe her for a while. Once she get used to scratching the post, you can move it a bit further from the furniture. But you must take care to do so only gradually.

2. Use a pet repellent spray on the furniture

If your kitty still scratches away your furnishings despite having her own scratching pad or post, then you can resort to pet repellent spray such as Bitter Apple. Of course, take care to test the spray on a hidden part of the upholstery first in order to be sure it doesn't discolor the fabric of your furniture.

A good way to avoid spoiling your furniture by spraying is by covering it with aluminum foil or tape that is placed sticky side up. Your kitty will be repelled and should willingly turn to her scratching post instead.

3. De clawing

This is the measure of last resort. If your kitty still insists on scratching, de clawing may be the only option left. As long as she does not leave the house, this should be a safe option. However, de clawing is a painful and risky surgery so think more than twice on this one.

Who makes or labels Costco's "Kirkland" Brand dry cat food?
I am looking for what to feed my cats since everything else that I had tried seemed to get recalled one way or another. I am looking for an aswer as to whether or not you are feeding your cats Fancy Feast wet food (gluten free flavors), Purina dry food, Meow Mix dry food, or Meow Mix Select wet food. Or has anyone had a problem with these foods. Please don't answer by referring to the recall list. I have seen the list dozens of times. I am being precautionary and checking with people who are using these products or know people who are. Please don't suggest the better quality premium brands because I have to order them online as there are no retailers in my area. I was feeding my cats healthy foods and all ended up recalled. I have also heard that purina uses products from the US and the corn gluten in Meow Mix dry is of US origin.

Cat Dry food recall?
The vet noticed that he was rubbing his head more harder than he should or more than he should...I thought he was just cleaning himself but now they are telling me that he has mild food allergies. Cat Condos: Exercise And Fun For Our Feline Friends

Having been rescuing and befriending abandoned cats for over 26 years, I have become very cognizant of the importance of providing and maintaining our furry friends' once active outdoor lifestyles to their new indoor environment. My current three "wonder cats" - Mikko, Panther and Buddy - used to be very active outdoors; some activities were of a "fending one's turf", resulting in the showing of "battle scars"; some were more of a playful nature, i.e. running, chasing and climbing. Deciding to transition my kids to be solely indoor inhabitants was due mostly to their well-being and overall health. Because of this I was concerned about how to maintain their active lifestyles, maintain a healthy body weight, and offer a quality of life which was both fun and relaxing.

After succeeding in coaxing my guys indoors (it took me 2 YEARS to finally get Panther to trust me enough to come indoors, and even then continued to be a "process"!), I wanted to offer them a quality of life where I felt I wasn't depriving them in any way by keeping them indoors, while maintaining their health.

Along with investigating the most optimal nutritional needs for my guys, I wanted them to get the most out of indoor exercising tools. I researched and discovered that cat condos, trees and beds (also known as furniture) offered a specific place for cats to call their own, in addition to providing them with fun, relaxation and most importantly exercise, due to the climbing, jumping, chasing and scratching (most coming with scratching posts) that seem to be common activities.

My two black and white cats - Mikko and Panther - seem to have been developing a very unique and special relationship, playing, "stalking" each other and hanging out together quiet frequently during the day and into the night. Although Buddy has a very loving and kind personality, he and Panther tend to continue to be "territorial" around each other, causing them to mostly avoid the other, with occasional "scruffs." And Mikko seems to be the "peace keeper" between the other two.

I totally love watching my three felines in their cat tree. I have found on many occasions I turn the tv (and other "distractions") off, and watch the "kids go at it", they seeming to be totally immersed in their "jungle gym" and with each other. Knowing they are all having fun, and getting their exercise at the same time, makes me one happy dad!

I have my own online business specializing in cat trees, condos and beds, both self-standing and wall mounted. I also have included on my website litter box cabinets with additional drawers, for those humans who prefer a more "hidden look" with cat's "bathrooms" from the standard litter box areas.

Proper diagnosis is essential for treatment of any cat health problem. In this case, your kitty's urine should be tested properly to rule out other problems and isolating UTI. Treatment for UTI includes a primary course of antibiotics, which may be followed by a change in diet.

Cats are living creatures and in many ways, they suffer from the same ailments that affect humans too. As we age, we will find that our bones and joints become less strong. It is the same with your cat. In fact, it is quite common for senior cats to suffer from joint pain just like us, humans. But how can you tell for sure if kitty is indeed suffering in silence? Older cats may suffer from Osteoarthritis, a degenerative joint disease. One possible cause of this disease is excess weight, the other is of course, age.

So how can you tell if your cat is indeed suffering from joint pain or Osteoarthritis? Here are 6 tell tale signs:-

1. Altered gait

-- You may suddenly notice that your cat does not walk the same she always does. Her gait may change or she may limp on one side indicating pain on one or 2 of her legs.

2. Difficulty getting into and out of the litter box

-- She may exhibit lethargy or stiffness when getting up and about. That includes getting into and out of her litter box. Such lethargy indicates pain in the legs or joints

3. Obvious pain when walking

-- You should be able to tell that kitty is obviously feeling pain when walking, like an old lady. That's another danger sign.

4. Not so willing to jump

-- If you notice kitty is not so "bouncy", that's a red alert. Healthy cats are normally playful so her reluctance to jump and play is not a good sign but an indication of pain somewhere in her body

5. Loss in appetite

-- Is your cat eating less these days? While this alone does not indicate joint pain but taken together with the other points above, you should, nonetheless, be concerned.

6. Personality changes

-- Another subtle indication is that your cat may suddenly become nervous, more aggressive or even depressed. These emotional changes are strong indications that things are not right.

What should you do if your cat is suffering from joint pain? Obviously, bringing her to the vet is one option but this may be unnecessary and costly. So here are some things you can do at home to treat kitty:

1. Control her diet and weight

-- is kitty putting on too much weight? If so, she needs to slim down because excessive body weight can put pressure on her joints and cause joint pain. Put less food on her feeder but do so gradually, not suddenly.

2. More exercises

-- your cat may actually need more exercises to reduce her weight. But there is also another side to exercises - they warm up the joints so that kitty becomes more flexible. Give her more space to move and stretch, even to run around the house.

3. Provide more warm

-- warmth can be soothing for painful joints as it aids in blood circulation. You may want to buy heated pads for cats or simply provide more cushions and blankets to keep your cat warm

4. Gentle massages

-- gentle massages can help improve blood circulation and also ease pain.

If the above home treatment does not help, then it is time to take her to the vet.

Besides the above, you may also want to seriously consider giving your cat some product for cat pain relief. These pain relief remedies can help if your cat is really in pain and need immediate attention. Also, consider getting some pet or cat vitamins because cats do need these in order to keep healthy.
