My cat has just had an operation to remove his penis and to create a new wee hole....due to severe crystals in his bladder and urethra. These crystals could not be removed by dissolving solution. I am now looking for the absolute best in cat food...to maintain his FLUTD, and prevent its return. We are very lucky to still have him. Its so confusing researching all the prescription diets...and some good advice would be most appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Science Diet Urinary. Hands down - vets recommend it. My friend had a similar situation with ongoing UTIs, he was actually going to euthanize his cat if he had to pay for another surgery....he tried Science Diet and hasnt had a problem since.

The cat foods at http://www. frrco. com/121668 Because of the quality ingredients, they are less likely to cause problems like this, as well as less likely to cause allergies and other health problems. Because of the better quality, you feed less so it only winds up being a few cents more per feeding, which you more than make up in less vet visits for health problems that can be food associated.

Hills Prescription Diet c/d formula is for feline lower urinary tract disease with struvite crystals. Hills is by FAR the most trusted prescription food for animals..they are the people that make Science Diet. You have to get it at the vet. Im sure your vet will agree its best...this company does the most reseach to develop the best food for animals with different health problems.

The solution to my cats problem (and he did not have to have surgery) was a raw meat diet. There are many ways to do that and you can join a Yahoo group called Holisticat for recipes and support in making the switch to a new food. The normal pH for a cats urine is slightly acidic. A dry food diet or one with methionine added (the vet prescription foods) does not always work. The raw meat worked for my kitty and it will keep the urine at the correct balance. My cat never had a problem again.

Well first glad to hear ur kitty is doing better - serious issue there. Your Vet should have told you of the foods that help...Science Diet... S/D for stones/crystalsScience Diet...C/D for urinary maint. These are the best in my opinion...and comes in moist cans to be mixed w/ dryCan get costly if u have multiple cats...I would stay on that for bout a good month then u can gradually switch down...I use Purina Urinary Managemt. for maint. Lg. Red bag...Walmart sells it. Good luck - well wishes for ur friend

Science Diet S/D is what you need to start him on then after about 2-4mths ween him onto Science Diet C/D-S, most cats to rather well on this diet. Some cats will always have problems and a diet may not help. Purina also has came out with prescription diets Purina UR is a good food it comes in hard and moist bites, sometimes after surgeries you need a more appetizing food and UR moist bites seem to go over pretty well. ALL OF THIS FOODS MUST BE PURCHASED AT YOUR VET BECAUSE THEY ARE PRESCRIPTION DIETS.

I was paying $20+ for a 4lb bag of "prescription" dry cat food for my cat who also had crystals and utis constantly...when i compared the ingredients of this food with the purina one for urinary tract formula it turned out that purina one had better ingredients including less magnesium which is the main thing that contributes to crystals...check it out much cheaper and better mine has been on it almost a year and i havent had any more episodes
