Is it ok for my puppy to eat the cat food?

George

My new puppy always wants to eat my cat food is this bad for her?

Rosy

When I was a kid I had a dog and a cat. Mom jokes that the dog would eat the cats food, I would eat the dog food, and the cat would eat my food. Now that I have dogs, cats, and a kid, I keep the cat food up so the dogs cant get it and no pets eat human food. Its not going to kill your puppy, but its best for puppies to eat puppy food. Try putting the cat food up on the dryer or on a counter top, or a dresser, somewhere the cat can get that the dog wont. The dog will eventually eat its own food.

Alvera

Not the same nutrients

Andres

It wont hurt her, but it shouldnt be part of a regular diet.

Clarisa

Yes, chopped meat is chopped meat.

Edith

Its better for her to eat a puppy food that is specifically formulated with the nutrient content puppies need. You can keep the cat food up on a table, counter or shelf so the dog cannot reach it, or feed your cat on a schedule picking the food up in between feedings.

Denyse

It wont hurt her, but be sure it is not the primary part of her diet. It does not have all the nutrients that dogs need. If she refuses to eat dog food, switch brands or mix a little cat food in with hers. However--be sure your cat is not eating the dogs food. That actually is dangerous.

Renay

If your puppy starts meowing you might want to put an end to it.

Alejandro

One or two bites here and there will not harm the dog. Now replacing his food with cat food? Not a good idea. Dogs and cats have very different nutrition needs. A dog cannot healthily live on cat food, and a cat cannot healthily live on dog food. The puppy should be eating a high quality puppy food. I recommend Chicken Soup brand, Merrick, or Innova. Or any of the other 5-6 star foods from this website are good to feed your dog: http://www. dogfoodanalysis. com/dog_food_… .When switching foods, do it slowly. I do this over about a two week timespan:25% food A, 75% food B50% food A, 50% food B75% food A, 25% food B100% food A

Mila

It is not bad for her but you do need to wing her away from eating alot of it

Elma

Cats are true carnivores. Dogs are not. As such, feline diets require different nutrients in different amounts than dogs. The fat to protein content is much different. (Compare the nutritional analysis panel between your cat food and dog food.) In small amounts, cat food wont hurt her. In large amounts, or even small amounts every day for a long time, it would probably lead to obesity. Which isnt good. The other problem is that cat food is generally more expensive than dog food per pound, so your dog snacking on cat food is costing you more money in the long run. Your best bet is to try and place the cat food in a spot where your dog cant get to it. On top of the refrigerator, on top of the washing maching/dryer, or in a basement with a cat-door cut in the basement door that is too small for the dog (if its a larger dog) are all ways I have seen for people to keep their dogs out of their cats food.

Lisbeth

Its not bad for her, but it is giving way to much protein and that will make or dog nice and chunky. preferably you give them the right kind of food.

Dakota

Every once in awhile wont hurt but theres a reason they make cat food and dog food.

Elnora

It is BAD for your dog to eat cat food. It has too much fat in it. Put the cat food up out of her reach (cats will jump up to eat).My vet said that its ok for cats to eat dog food if they choose to. Good luck! :)

Shoshana

NO....now a days they make Dog Cat foods just for dogs or cats, so it can make the dog or cat sick to eat each others food...so my suggestion is seperate the food so the dog cant get it like put the cats food high where to dog cant get it, like on a washer...cats can jump climb where dogs puppies usually cant...Take Care :)

Darcie

Its not good for them, it gives them diarrhea. Thats why its cat food not dog food.

Dominga

The cat food is too hight in protine for a dog. and it dhould not be eatin by a dog AT ALL

Alisia

You shouldnt let it. Cats and dogs need different nutrients in their diet. Stick to dog food for the dogs and cat food for the cats. good Luck

Barney

Its not the healthiest thing dogs could eat, but it wont make them sick. My dog eats my cats food all the time.
