Is it harmful for my dog to eat cat food?

Denita

Lately Ive noticed that my two year old chihuahua would rather eat the cats food than her own. I buy "Pedigree Little Bites" for my dog and Purina "Indoor Delights" for my cat. However, whenever I feed them, my dog heads straight for the cats bowl, and will eat her food only when the cat kicks her out of her food (which happens after a few minutes). Is it harmful if she eats some cat food?

Estella

You are talking about a domesticated wild animal. Its ancestors chased down rats and bugs and ate them while they were still squirming. It cleans itself with its tongue. I dont think food that is formulated for a cat is going to do much damage to a dog.(That is, unless Rush Limbaugh has been successful at deregulating the manufacturer of it. Check into that first...)

Cat food is smellier than dog food so dogs think its like a treat in a bowl, waiting for them. Put the cat food up on a counter where the dog cant reach. A dog cant live on cat food alone.

Clarence

No...

Bev

Dont think its harm full but just more fat in cat chow that dog food so guess that makes it taste better too

Fairy

No its not.

Eustolia

No put dont feed it to him. If he accidentally gets some dont worry. My dogs do that to we but the cat food up high where the cats can reach it and the dogs cant. My cats can get on the fridge. Urs probably can 2

Domonique

My dog gets the sh*ts when she eats my cats food

Oralee

Nopejust dont let her eat too much though

Dania

No my Border Collie eats cat food (same kind as yours!) and so does my Mini Pincher

Ashlie

No it doesnt harm the dog, my dog steals the cats food all the time and vice verser, the reason they do it is because annimals as well as humans like veriety in their diet, if it becomes a problem you should invest in some veriety pouches or dry food I. E i feed my dog pedigree favourites mixed with pedigree better by nature, the pouches contain 4 diffrent flavours so the dog never gets bored, but she still enjoys cat food for that unique flavour, you can always put the cat food high ip so the dog is unable to reach it, hope that helpedby the way my dogs a border colliecya

Herman

No, my dog does that. Instead of buying him dog food, we buy him cat food now. He refuses to eat dog food. Its not harmful for them to eat it, the cat food is just designed for cat health, not for making dogs stronger. Just dont give it to him expecting it to make him skinnier with the diet food, or healthier with the health food, or God forbid prevent fur balls with the fur ball prevention food (:Anyways, he should be alright eating cat food.

Melody

My dog has eaten our cats food for years, and she is completely healthy.

Darrick

No but too much will give them dirria, because its too much protein.

Maire

No. My dogs eat table scraps. Is the cat food dry or wet? If its dry, probably not a big issue. Depends what you normally feed your dog and what breed as some breeds have a vulnerable indegestive track.

Breanna

It is not the best for her because cats and dogs have different nutritional needs but it will not harm her to consume some as long as that is not her daily diet. I would deffinately put the cat food up somewhere high out of reach of the puppy.

Debora

Since it’s higher in protein, fat and calories, it’s more tasty. However, most dogs will still eat their own dog food if they arent offered another choice. Remember that the nutritional needs of cats and dogs are different, and their foods are formulated to meet those specific needs. Although it is not usually harmful if a small amount of the wrong food is eaten, nutritional imbalances affecting your dog’s health could occur if this continues long term. Dietary changes can also cause gastrointestinal discomfort and diarrhea.

Ela

It is not harmful

Cat food is higher in both fat and protein than dog food, so any dog is going to prefer cat food over dog food. Just like any little kid is likely to want to eat cookies, cake, twinkies, and pizza rather than healthy foods that are good for them. The increased fat and protein in cat food can be harmful to a dog if fed long-term as it can cause liver issues, pancreatitis, and even kidney problems. It is also likely to lead to obesity, which has its own set of health problems to go along with it. A little cat food now and then isnt going to hurt a dog, but she should not be allowed to go eat the cats food instead of her own. Put the cat food up on a shelf or the dryer or somewhere that the dog cant get to it.
