I have a dachshund about 12 lbs, and i have a cat. but he has been eating the dry cat food and not his dry dog food. ive gone as far as not giving him any wet food or treats but still he goes for the cat food. any suggestions? his fur is dry and i know he needs his vitamins for his fur and his health not to mention what its done to his teeth.

We use to have the exact same problem with our mini doxie. She would eat the cat food and not her own. So we went to Petsmart and got breed specific food for her and then placed the cat food out of her site (i. e. on a kitchen counter) - eventually she got hungry enough to where she started to eat her own food. Another suggestion would be to mix in a few bits of the cat food with her own food just for smell purposes and hopefully she will learn to just eat her food. Good luck! P.S. Bill Jac food works WONDERS!

Put the cat food up high. cat food is bad for a dog it will make them sick. Mix wet food with your dogs dry food so that it is more appealing to him.
Hoyt
Feed them at different times of the day

Hi, i have heard that it is okay for a dog to eat cat food, but not for a cat to eat dog food as it is too strong for them, if hes happy eating the cat food then leave him, maybe you can get vitamins in a liquid form to add to his water or maybe some sort of capsule for him to eat. hope it works

Try and feed him his food individually, mainly force feed it so you make sure that he is eating the food. Also take away your cats food while he is eating so there will be no distractions.

When you put the food in the bowl have him watch you hide a couple of treats in the bowl(like 1 or 2) so he will atleast eat something. or you could try other flavors.....something closer to the cat food flavoror you could fill both bowls with dog food after the cat has eaten for a while so that there is the only 1 option! or put the cat food up higher so the dog cant get to it.. but if that makes him not eat at all it is better he at least eats something. if all else fails talk to your vet they will definitly have some ideas! hope these work! best of luck!

My dachshund loves to eat cat food too! I have to keep him away from it though because it makes him really sick. He throws up every time he eats it. I guess my suggestion would be to feed your cat in a different room away from the dog.

He goes for the cat food because it has more protein than dog food - you need to put the cat food where he cant get at it. Your cat can jump high, the dachshund cant, so this should not be a problem. I have 3 cats too, but put their food where the dachsies cant get to it. Also, make sure to give your dachsie really good dry kibble, sounds as if what he is getting is not very good. You can mix a little good canned, or white meat boneless chicken with it if you like, I went through this with 2 of my dachshund (I do rescue and have lots of dachsies), where skin was dry and flaky and coat listless. I switched to a food with meat, not by-product or corn meal, as the first ingredient - (Canidae chicken and rice is especially good for skin and coat) and it has made an enormous difference in the dogs well being and their skin isnt dry and coats shine. Its cheaper to feed good dog food, not from the supermarket, than go to the vet. Buy at a large pet store or a feed store, read the ingredients and the analysis - should be close to 30% protein and 18% fat.

Move the cat food out of his area of the house.

I have a dachshund, also. They will eat anything. My suggestion is to seclude the cats food so that the dachshund cannot get it. Put it in another room for example. Also, if you dog does not like his food, keep trying different brands. Doxies LOVE to steal food! I would maybe talk to your vet, also!

My dog did the same thing but he ate both of the foods. just put the cat food in a room where the dog cant get it or when you feed the cats put the dog outside. but we put the food in the bathroom and just left the door cracked.
