Why does my cat like to eat her food out of the bag?

Collen

Every time I buy a new bag of cat food, my cat eats through the bag and eats some of the food. Her dish still has food in it. If I dont get the cat food bag off the floor quick enough, shes got it full of holes.

My cat does the same thing, I think its just because they love the smell, it smells fresh straight from the bag, after being in the bowl for awhile it looses its smell and appeal, my cat also just loves to play w/ any kind of bag, smell or no smell. I dont think theres any stopping it. I wound up putting the food I buy for him in large plastic containers and cleaned pickle jars, make sure they dont smell anymore, thatd be yucky for the kitty.

Curiosity. Plus, cats love bags!

Melanie

Oh it just that old curious as a cat thing.

Cathleen

Maybe she likes the challenge! My dogs would open that bag if left on the floor too, even if they had just eaten. They are greedy little things!

Because just like we as humans do, cats like their food to be fresh. My cat does the same thing. One thing I have learned to do is as soon as I bring a new bag home, I pour it into a plastic container with a lid. Then I use a scoop to fill up her bowl when it is empty. It has really helped tone down the mess she would make by chewing the bag up. A good suggestion for a container is one of those plastic cat litter containers with the hinge lid. After the cat litter is emptied out, use it for cat food. It also keeps it fresher than the food bag itself. I hope this information is good for you.

Three of my four do that as well, but theres a simple solution...dont leave the bag out where they can get to it. Lock it up in the pantry and problem solved.

There was a funny song once that was made for a joke. You might be too young to have ever heard it. It was...does you chewing gum lose its flavor on the bedpost overnight. Stupid, funny song. But yes, another poster was right. The stuff in the bag has more smell to it. As you get to the bottom of the bag, or as the stuff sits out in a bowl, some of the smell goes away. You could try keeping your cat food in a tupperware container or something like that, to keep the air away from it. I have a bunch of cats and foster cats too, so I buy my food in the great big bags. I saved the plastic tubs from my cat litter and washed them out. I empty the paper bags of cat food into those tubs and snap the lid closed. Keeps if smelling fresh longer. They arent very decorative, but very functional, and I figure its kind of like recycling.

As soon as you bring it home put it in a tupperware i have one for my cats food that is a cereal container

The food from the bag is much more fresh then the stuff sitting in the feeder. They also like the krinkling sound that paper makes.

Its more comforting to them to be suround then to be out inthe open. nothins wrong
