My oldest cat in the house is now 7

My oldest cat in the house is now 7 years old. I have 4 indoors right now. Up until about 6 months ago, they ate purina cat chow. After doing my homework and realizing how bad there food was and dry on top of it I changed. I changed to innova dry food and they were having no parts of it and actually my one cat landed in the emergency hospital because of it. To rich I guess. I switced to wellness wet food. Than I switched to chicken soup lite cause I wanted less of a calorie intake for them. As soon as I heard about the second recall I witched to innova wet food. Cats did well, gained weight again :( and than decided to go off there food. Bored I guess so as frustrated as I am, I said F-it and bought there old wet food to just get them eating again which is Friskies. They begin eating but one. As soon as my one sensitive cat smells wet food he runs. I just took him to the vets and hes fine. I gave him a handful of very bad dry fod for the cats outside and he ate it.

Your cats want the crappy food back just like a 2 year old would eat nothing but junk food if you let them. So no, I dont think you shoudl give them back the cheap dry food. I recommend varying the diet with a constant rotation of accepted canned foods that your cats enjoy. If you do this, and allow your cat the same assortment they would have in nature when eating mice, bugs, birds and rabbits, your cats’ digestive system wont be so sensitive and you wont have to run around looking for a specific brand when your store is out. You will have a nice variety to choose from instead. Imo there is nevere a reason to feed dry foods. I would take a worse quality canned food over dry. I wouldnt care any more about their wanting their crappy food back then I woul my kid wanting to eat ice cfream every day for dinner. You have done your research obviously. It seems like your cats ha no problems untill you went to alleged lite food, I would go back to the wellness. Calories A very general guieline is that cats need about 20 calories per pound of cat to remain the same weight. That means a 10 pound cat needs 200 calories to stay the same weight an less to lose more to gain. If weight is becoming a problem then what you can o is measure the amound of calories your cat has been eating and then making adjustments from there If 2oo calories are causing unwanted weight gain then lower the calories to 175, This list will give you the breakdown in different foods You can get the calorie content herehttp://www. geocities. com/jmpeerson/CanFo…

I have to admit that I have had similar issues - expensive food causes illness, bad stomachs etc ( and about the last thing you ever need is 13 cats with diarrhoea and sickness running around your house!) Mine get a really cheap canned food that I buy in bulk ( its foreign and I can guess it contains horsemeat and junk from the renderers etc but they love it.) I also buy "breederpack" biscuits which come in a plastic sack ( and look and smell a lot like the Friskies biscuits) as well as this they get between 1 2lbs of uncooked minced offal ( straight from the butcher - same stuff as the dogs have) with this combination they are fine, glossy and not throwing up everywhere. The vet compliments me on them whenever he sees them (usually for shots) I leave the biscuits separate so they can just help themselves when they want to and they get canned meat for breakfast and the canned/fresh combination at night. We use 5 cans a day. Dont know if thats going to be any help at all to you but thats what mine get!

I had a similar problem. I have 3 cats. I didnt know much about cat nutrition so all my cats were eating dry Purina cat chow and 2 of them are eating whiskas wet food. When I came on this site, everyone was saying it was crap plus they have allergies which the vet wanted me to change their food. So, for the dry, I switched them to California Natural. At first, it didnt go too well, they really didnt want it and my youngest cat stopped eating for a day. Gradually, they started to like it but my oldest cat who is 15 years old started to have loose stools. Anyways, everytime he would poop, he would wipe himself on the carpet and made quite a mess. So, I was fed up with that and hes back to Purina cat chow. I know it is crap but if he does well on it, why change it. Hes been eating that all through his life and never been sick! My youngest cat only eats the CN dry, she doesnt like wet food. My other girl eats the CN dry also plus she eats whiskas wet salmon and my old guy eats Purina cat chow dry plus whiskas wet salmon also. Sometimes, we try to do better with our cats and it doesnt work out. I didnt want to change him back to his old food but if it was causing him problems, Id rather he not have problems! I also tried to change the wet food up to no avail! They only want the whiskas, so thats that! Good luck with your decision!

I have been in this dilemma since we adopted our adult cat a couple years ago. She is a dry-food addict. I tried switching her to a high quality canned but my b/f was getting upset that she wasnt eating and was wandering around the house meowing because shes hungry. I did end up switching her to a high quality dry food which she loves called Orijen. And once or twice a day I feed her crappy Fancy Feast canned food with added water. Shell eat a bit of it and likes it a lot more than the Merrick high-quality food. As long as she eats some of it Im happy, although a lot of it ends up in the garbage unfortunately.

Have you tried Taste of the Wild? It is a good quality dry food - maybe you can get a small bag to try out to see if it does the trick. Good luck! http://tasteofthewildpetfood. com/product…

I know you have to be frantic, and the poor babies arent helping....they will be fine okay. try fancy feast....my niece has 4 cats, all indoors, Himalayans, the really long haired ones......any way she feeds fancy feast all their lives, and they are healthy as heck and never turn away from it. you may want to try it out, if that does not work, then I guess its back to ole faithful, so they will eat, and try to slip them some better food with it, see if you can trick themgood luckNow, if you had ole Garfield at your house to show them how to eat, you would have it made, he eats everything, and they would try to keep up with him...
